As was the case with their North counterparts, the South was forced to conduct their practice indoors in an enormous concrete hall at the Mobile Convention Center due to inclimate weather. However, the Washington Redskins coaching staff ran a much better session. Whereas there was little or nothing of import to take away from the North’s practice this morning, the Redskins at least gave us some legitimate opportunities to evaluate the players. Even so, this practice wasn't nearly as fruitful as it would've been over at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. As they say, omething is a whole lot better than nothing though!
The South ran plays at a much faster pace than the North and while the players certainly weren’t going full speed there was definitely a hint of competitiveness in the air. The star of this practice was undoubtedly Alabama TE Brad Smelley, who was seemingly catches passes left and right. At one point Smelley even beat Janoris Jenkins on a deep ball! It was almost comical how often Smelley was targeted today and a bunch of draftniks began to speculate about what the headline should be for their practice reports. Among the suggestions were It’s Smelley in Mobile and Do You Smelley What the South is Cooking?. Granted nobody was even wearing pads, but Smelley has actually performed well all week. When it was first announced that Smelley got an invite to the 2012 Senior Bowl most assumed it was only because he played for the Crimson Tide and would be a local favorite. However, even if that was the case initially Smelley definitely proved that he belonged. Smelley is still more of a late round possibility and and could go undrafted but there is no question he opened some eyes this week, at the very least locking up a camp invitation. Another standout was Arizona WR Juron Criner, who caught a number of passes and even went to the ground in an attempt to make a catch. Normally that wouldn’t be a very big deal, but you have to keep in mind that the floor was cement! Arkansas WR Joe Adams also flashed at times and there are rumblings that the speedster might run a 4.2 forty.
Unfortunately Houston WR Patrick Edwards had to drop out of the game due to an injury. Edwards will not be replaced on the roster since it’s so late in the week.
