View Full Version : Band Draft: Which Band is best? You decide!
TPFKA#1SaintsFan
06-01-2007, 10:46 AM
(I'm hoping to keep this in Off Topic in order to reach more people, but if a mod sees fit to move it to Fantasy, that's fine.)
Very simple: Vote for the member with the best band, and please try to explain why you think that band is best. This is based on the results of the recently conducted Band Draft in the fantasy forum: http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9448.
The members of the bands listed below are not in the order of which they were drafted; I put them in what I consider to be "band lineup order." See the Band Draft thread if you're interested in round-by-round results.

you should put a poll in, to get things organised.
My vote goes to OSUGiants17.
Mainly because his band would be making a kind of hardrock-punk kind of music, which would sound insane... I loved the Ness and Freeman selections when he made them and still do. The only guy I'm not sure on is Travis Barker, but that's mainly because of 'The Barkers'... otherwise a great drummer for the genre. The only general question I have is how he's going to fit two solo-guitarists into a band that is mainly occupied by punk band members (that being Rancid, Social Distortion and Blink-182).
Honerable mentions go to Thule and TPFKA#1SaintsFan

Since I'm not going to be cheap and vote for myself, my vote goes to diabsoule. I'm not huge on Burdon's vocals, but otherwise his band looks awesome. Excellent example of a true "supergroup." Helps out that Jack Bruce is one of my top 5 all-time favorite musicians.
A few very good bands to pick from (along with a couple of lousy ones that were easy to eliminate), but eventually gave a slight edge to stillaraiderfan. a) Looking at this lineup, I don't see anybody who isn't one of the greats on their instrument. Henley aint the best drummer, but singing too gives him a pass. b) Clapton isn't even singing backup vox for this band while he'd be the best singer for some of the other bands. c) It's the best mix of guys whose styles would likely mix well.
Lots of excellent musicians left as free agents after this draft though.

I'm amazed that the few jazzy bands didn't take Buddy Rich as their drummer. Biggest snub of the entire draft IMO.

very true. i could make 3/4 of my dream band with the people that went undrafted.
next time one of these is done, i want in.
Yeah, just off the top of my head:
Chris Cornell-vocals
Cliff Burton-bass
Dave Grohl-drums
Joe Perry-guitar

I think a few of the bigger name guys who went undrafted would have been drafted if we had one or two (definitely one) guys who knew what the F they were doing.
I also think that I filled my band with some of the most underrated great musicians of all time and the poll will reflect that. Beck, Entwistle, and Baker are all the cream of the crop at their respective instruments. None gets the credit they deserve.
Jeff Beck gets his credit, but yeah, the other guys don't get theirs.
another huge miss...where the **** is Tommy Lee!?!?!?! Granted, a lot of you guys have legendary drummers, so I'm not pointing at all of you...but c'mon here. The man kills on the skins.

fenikz, TPFKA#1SaintsFan, and diabsoule were the 3 best for sure. I voted for Saints fan.
fischbowl, your band makes no sense. Keith Moon is a terrible fit at drums for a band with country guys like Cash and Daniels.
raiderfan, that is genius to have Marley and Clapton together, but you could've dug up somebody better than Don Henley on drums, say Neil Peart the 3rd best drummer ever, or Charlie Watts at least he's solid as they come. What about Ringo, he kicks butt?!? You finish 4th on my personal list.

i had actually thought about don henley on drums. everyone could have parts and such. it would have been a blues version of the eagles. BUT, i love the way carter plays drums and he can play many many different styles. a bluesy style like SRV, a more modern style like Mayer, a syncopated blues style like Monk, as well as keeping a nice jazzy pocket with Marcus Miller. Personal preference i suppose, but I'm hurt that Lito has more votes than me.

The fact that 2 people have voted for LitoSheppard shows that they either:
1. Have no perception whatsoever of what is good music. Not saying any of those guys are bad, but the severe clash of styles would lead to, undoubtedly, some of the absolute WORST music ever made.

i voted for thule. it was pretty difficult because 1 or 2 more bands had some great guys in it. he would have run away with it had ben folds been your piano player and not Dropping Daylights guy. Ben is better at the piano and vocals and he could do the song writing for you guys, and he can play any type of music on the piano. i love Dropping Daylight and the piano guy for them but it would have been way easier had Folds been your man.

As much as it pains me to vote for anything that clown Manzarek is in...by far this group would be the most talented. Marley on Vocals would be the only thing I'd change. 3 legendary songwritters and "God" on guitar would've been enough for me.

Sigh... gotta say, I thought I'd do much better in the voting. Guess that's what I get for picking a few underrated guys who often get looked over today for bigger names, or whatever.
Here are some snippets from Wikipedia, not to try to boost my votes as I've already ceded that sarf has the best band, but to attempt to kind of "educate":
John Entwistle
He is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential rock bassists of all time,[1] creating an aggressive lead sound that helped influence contemporary and later bassists such as Les Claypool, Steve Harris, Lemmy Kilmister, Geddy Lee, Phil Lesh, Noel Redding, Billy Sheehan, Chris Squire and Mike Watt.
Entwistle helped uncover the potential of the bass guitar as a lead instrument, using aggressive pentatonic lead lines, and a trebly sound virtually unheard of in the early 1960s.
Ginger Baker
Baker's drumming attracted attention for its flamboyance, showmanship, and his pioneering use of two bass drums instead of the conventional single 'kick' drum.
While at times performing in a grandiloquent manner similar to that of Keith Moon of The Who, Baker was also capable of the more restrained playing he had heard with British jazz groups during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Baker also performed lengthy improvisational drum solos, his most famous of all being the thirteen-minute drum solo from "Toad", heard on Cream's double album Wheels of Fire.
Jeff Beck
Though he played in several influential bands in the 1960s and 1970s (notably in The Yardbirds) Beck has maintained a sporadic solo career over the last 25 years. Despite never attaining the commercial viability of his contemporaries, Beck has gained widespread critical acclaim, especially in the guitar playing community.[1] He has won many grammy awards in the category for best rock instrumental. Never one to be tied to one particular genre, he has experimented with blues rock, heavy metal, and jazz fusion.

Guitar/Vocals: Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society / Ozzy)
Guitar: Kirk Hammett (Metallica)
Bass: Les Claypool (Primus)
