Jim Thorpe was a great athlete too. He won Olympic gold medals in the pentathlon and decathlon, played American football collegiately and professionally, and also played professional baseball and basketball.

Give him the respect he deserves by calling him by his name, Muhammad Ali.

Well there have been very few athletes to completely dominate a sport, that to me is way more important that being a "freak".
I am going Gretzky.

Never seen Bo Jackson, and am not going to go off of what everyone else says. I think athletes keep getting better, so right now are probably the best athletes ever. Guys in mind are:
Julius Peppers
Lebron
*pretty much anyone in the NBA*

Anyone who could weight as much as Bo Jackson, hit as hard as he could and run as fast as he could gets my vote.

Deion Sanders. He was the best corner ever, a great return man. Most impressively he played baseball at the sametime and was a very good player.

It's could be Bo purely based on athletic ability, but to throw another name out there that hasn't been said, what about Jim Brown? He was an amazing football player, and if I'm correct one of the best lacrosse players of his time as well.

Jim Brown is the only player inducted into 2 sports hall of fames (football and lacrosse). He is definitely in the conversation like derza said. Muhammad Ali and Bo Jackson were great, Carl Lewis and Jesse Owens were awesome too. Pele was amazing as well.

he's not even the best athlete in the NBA right now. No one is quite the athlete as LeBron. He can play 4 positions effectively on the floor and has an insane leaping and speed combo. Not to mention he's a freaking sculpture at 6-8/250.

How this thread went with only TWO Jim Brown mentions is beyond me, there is a right and wrong to this question, and while Bo Jackson comes close, he's the wrong answer. The correct answer would be the aforementioned Jim Brown.
tiger woods
soon to be the best golfer of all time.
and the best gene pool
strength of a black man
brain of an asian
a german scientist couldn't have made a better specimen.

Wilt Chamberlain.
Could do a dunk where he put the ball in his armpit, put the armpit up against the rim and slammed the ball in with his other hand.
Beat Jim Brown in a foot race.
Once picked a guy up in the key and threw him.
Once dunked the ball so hard that it broke a guy's toe on the way down.
It's a shame he played in the '60s since so little record of him exists, I actually think he might be the best player of all-time.
