FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) -- The NFL's development league in Europe folded Friday after 16 years.

The decision came less than a week after the Hamburg Sea Devils beat the Frankfurt Galaxy 37-28 in the World Bowl XV in Frankfurt, spokesman Maik Matischak said.

The league began in 1991. Five of its six teams were based in Germany, with the Amsterdam Admirals completing the field.

I believe the whole NFL game in London is supposed to help promote the World League/new NFL Europa league.

"A statement on the German-language edition of the NFL's Web site said the NFL decided to concentrate its "strategies and resources" on regular-season games outside the United States in an effort to reach as many people as possible."

"From now on we will focus on regular-season games and use new technologies to make NFL more popular worldwide," he said.

This is gonna screw a lot of players over. To some, NFLE is all they have to make it.

Canada and Arena are nothing like the NFL game, in canada the field is really wide, in Arena, it is short and less players. I hope the come up with a new league or it will be hard for a lot of upcoming NFL prospects to stay on a team and prove themselves.

I hope this means the end of the 17th international game for each team.

Actually this means that the 17th game is an inevitability. If you're going to make the world interested in the NFL, you give them the real deal, not a watered down version of it. Expanding worldwide is necessary.

I'm sure a new league will be coming. I wasn't surprised to hear the news of NFLE folding, due to amount of disinterest that the league generated.

I guess the world wasn't ready for Casey Bramlet.

It was pretty much NFL Germany and it needed to be more expanded for it to succeed

Why can't the NFL have a minor league based in the states?

QFE, out here when atlanta played indianapolis in tokyo people who watched the game in Aus got sick of all the sloppy play, dropped passes, turnovers etc and switched off, we hate the advertising too, so its probably going to be no chance out here or in NZ.

If the NFL wasn't so commerical orientated it would be much more popular world wide imo.

EVERYTHING here is commercial oriented.. I don't like the idea of the 17th international game for teams, it's just unnecessary to me..

Why can't the NFL have a minor league based in the states? That would be the best thing for them to do.

Expanding the NFL to Europe and other parts of the world by staging games there isn't necessary. The old saying is, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. The NFL is a billion dollar industry and is the most watched sport in America, so why change it?

As for a minor league, they should keep the same names of the original NFL teams (The Jr./Minor 49ers, etc) and hold games in the same stadium in the off season. I think if the NFL were to support and promote a minor league of undrafted/released players, it can become very popular and profitable in the future.

I don't think a "minor league" is really needed for the NFL. College is essentially the minor league of the NFL.
