He was great last year, but I didn't think this great:
On Monday, the Lions backed up that belief by making him the highest-paid defensive tackle in football. Redding, the team's franchise player in 2007, agreed to a seven-year, $49 million contract that included $16 million in guarantees, including $13 million in signing bonus and roster guarantees.

I don't panic about the "richest DT" thing because all that says is, he's the latest one to be signed. Contracts go up and up, that's no newsflash to anyone.

Besides, let's see what his actual cap number is for the next 3 years before we pass judgment on how overpaid he really is.

The Lions had to do what it took to keep him, especially after they jettisoned 2 of their other key players on D and identified him as the one they wanted to keep. Redding had the leverage and was going to make sure he got the most he could get out of them.

I say it's a good signing but he damn well better prove he was worth it.

Corey Redding was a beast last year. In the few games I watched him, he was a constant force. The Lions need him because the Tampa 2 is predicated on having a pass rush force at the 3-tech position.

Im not sure Redding deserved this kind of cash-in but he had a good year and having a disruptive UT is very important to Marinellis cover 2.

So are they going to let Shaun Rogers go? If not, how much are they going to have to pay him?

Big Baby is still on a 6-year, $46m contract he signed in Jan 2005. Which doesn't make sense when you think about it, that's an average of $7.66m so how can Redding be the highest paid? Just goes to show, NFL numbers are always a little shady. Anyway Rogers has no place to complain considering his last year, full of injuries, bad attitude, and the strip club incident.

Redding is the richest in terms of total $ on the contract. That is one expensive DT duo.

Thats the truth there. Kevin Williams and Tommie Harris and even maybe Pat Williams but thats an iffy one there. But Tommie and Kevin are better than him.

I'm a little concerned about the Lions' defensive end situation. If they can coax enough production from Francis, White, Edwards and DeVries, they should have an excellent defensive unit if the young guys develop as expected.

Once Tommie Harris and Kevin Williams get an extension they will assuredly get more. This is the climate of today's NFL.

Kevin Williams already signed one last December. 5 years for $33.24 million with $16 million guaranteed.

The defensive ends are going to have a fairly easy time of it, considering the massive amount of pressure that interior line brings. I still think they need to add a legitimate edge rusher, but their current stock should be solid for this year.

Alright, but Tommie Harris for sure. Anyway, Kevin Williams is making just nearly as much as Redding (6.6$ mil per versus 7$). If Redding continues to play like he did last year at the Tampa 2 3-tech, he deserves this paycheck.

I wonder if this is like the Nate Clements deal, where the final year is a complete sham. Just a ploy to garner attention; i.e "______ made highest paid ______"

Who's his face is right though, Tommie Harris is going to get a contract either this offseason or next that will totally blow that one away.

I'm glad Hampton has some years left. I don't even want to think about what a guy like Hampton will command. He means so much to the Steelers defense and he knows it.

I would put the Lions in the top-3 DT tandems, with the Vikings, below the Jaguars.

Aaron Kampman tallied 15.5 sacks and 89 tackles last season.

Yeah what about Shaun Cody I thought he was good young DT and a good fit for the UT in the cover 2. But it seems like that job is Reddings for good. Will Cody just be a rotational player or could he be slid over to DE?

You are correct.

Now lets compare him to Corey Williams:

Redding in 16 starts had 47 tackles, 8 sacks, 2 FFs, 1 FR

Corey Williams in 11 starts had 34 tackles, 7 sacks, 2 PDs, 1 FR

He was a beast on the interior. He had eight sacks from the UT position, which is typically outstanding. Best of all he is only twenty seven, so he should be entering his prime. I think it was a smart decision because they need him. While he's the highest paid now, he won't be in two years, so they didn't 'grossly' overpay for him.
