I wish I knew something about rap to actually have an opinion on this, though I do like Saul Williams but wouldn't classify him as a rapper.

1) Nas
2) Pac
3) Jay-Z
4) LL
5) Rakim

Biggie didn't have a large enough body of work to merit a top 5 rating IMO.

And if we're talkin about pure lyrical skills, the list would be much different, but top MC's of all time includes a lot more factors than lyrical skills. (Such as longevity and consistency)

Tough question. Other than 2Pac, my tastes seem to change quit rapidly.

1. Rakim
2. Nas
3. KRS-ONE
4. Tupac
5. Common

TI is nothing but bad, he has some catchy songs maybe, but says nothing in his lyrics. His songs dont have meaning, sorry. And, I am not elitist, I am one of Nas' biggest fans, he is mainstream. I also love common, he has gone mainstream. I dont rate rappers based on exposure, altho the best do happen to be UG imo. Most of them rap about about real things like problems with society, or their way of life, or interesting and sometimes chilling stories about how they grew up (something I have never came close to experiencing in real life.) I like serious rap that deals with heavy subjects, most mainstream artists flat out dont do that. Listen to Dance With the Devil by Immortal Technique, it is brilliant, but a mainstream guy could never come out with that because it is too controversial. That is why the UG, in general, is better, they have the freedom to create amazing music without the constraints of record companies.

Rob S

I don't really like UG rap, but well said. T.I. is overrated and has no lyrics whatsoever. He needs to spend more time expanding his vocabulary and thought processes and less time telling himself how he's the King and he still "traps".

I really don't like Jay-Z very much. He's never really been a great lyricist and his flow bothers me most of the time, especially on his guest spots. He goes off-topic and rambles a lot in his verses. Reasonable Doubt was a hot album, no question, but what happened after that? I have his discography and outside of that album there's maybe 5-10 songs I don't dislike.

some UG rappers I like, there are many more:

Immortal Technique (dont like some of his radical politics, but some of his work sends chills down your spine, do yourself a favor and listen to Dance With the devil)

Pharoe Monch is sick

Masta Ace- A long hot summer is an amazing album, Disposable Arts, Sittin on Chrome and Take a look around are great too. I love Ace

Canibus- probably the best battle rapper alive, maybe the best vocabulary in hip hop.....2000 BC and Rip the Jacker are his best.

AZ- Doe or Die is sick, his old stuff is his best. His verse on Nas' Life's a b*itch is considered by many to be the best in hip hop history

Marco Polo's album Port Authority may be the best from the 1st half of 07

Hell Rahza- Renaissance Child is great

Sean Price is really good

i cant make a top 5, cause the times change too fast, and the equipment changes too fast. Beats die, and the list narrows. Its too hard to make good songs now. Id kill for remixs with old beats, or new beats, but honeslty, i just wish i could hear tupac with some beats nowadays.

It's too hard to FIND good songs now. Just about everything put out for TV and Radio is garbage; so if you want to hear good stuff, you have to put in some work.

haha you gotta be kidding me. I'm not a fan of that song, you could have at least put one of Immortal Techniques best songs. One song doesn't make UG better anyways.

I'm not trying to hate on underground because I love it also, i'm just trying to get certain people on this board to admit that maintstream music is just as good, if not better.

ive listened to dance with the devil... it is a disturbing song but i mean it was well put together in that sort of way... it is in no means brilliant.. "deep" or different maybe... but just because the guy is expressing his social / political views on all his songs doesnt make him a better rapper, it is just a diff style

Most people would agree that artists like Immortal Technique have more meaningful lyrical content than guys like T.I. Singing about how rich you are or whatever isn't that hard when compared to story-telling, using anecdotes or rapping poetically.

I am not calling all popular artists bad, i have only said that 10 times this thread......I have heard Lil Wayne's mixtapes and the lyrics still blow. My issue is that mainstream rap may sound good, but in general (there are exceptions), the UG sounds good AND contains brilliant lyrics that deal with relevant issues today other than clubs, cars, ice and women.

IT is telling a story through rap, and does it quite eloquently. If you read the lyrics you will see he has quite a vocabulary. Also, the subject of the song is something I, and most other people, are sheltered from as we grow up, that makes my interest level increase.

i cant see how you say all his lyrics blow when you hear some of the similies and metaphors he spits, he doesnt tell many stories in his stuff but thats not his style, hes more of a punch line rapper... jayz though is right up there with all the "UG" guys when it comes to telling a story in his rap or conveying a different message

They have talent, yes, but first of all most of them dont even write their own stuff, so if something good comes out it isnt even their words most of the time. And they probably dont have the talent to write it, most UG guys can and do.

Thats why i rank Jay so high. Wayne;s rapping does contain some nice wordplay for sure, but does it really talk about anything significant, not really. Many UG guys have the wordplay but use it to talk about stuff that matters. Does Wayne write his own songs? I am curious.

Dancin' with the devil-It is very hard to write or rap a story out. With this song he has done it graciously. I don't think any of those joksters like luda, lil wayne, charmander I mean chamillinaire or T.I. have the creativity or imagination to do that, but guys like B.I.G, Tupac, Jay Z, KRS-One, Awol-One and Busdriver could have done it.

Basically what it boils down to is that I am looking for the complete package in a rapper. I ideally want them to write their music, have a killer vocab and great wordplay, have that vocab and wordplay be used to comment on something of significance, and finally, sound good. Unfortunately, that is a rarity in the mainstream imo. Mainstream stuff can be catchy and sound good, I dance to those songs all the time, but where it is sorely lacking is 1. artists writing the music, 2. speaking on issues of significance.

if you like vocab and word play check out Blackalicious.. it's not as serious as Immortal Technique, but still good music

They could've I mean. Lyrics is one of the reasons I prefer the underground.

Thats why i rank Jay so high. Wayne;s rapping does contain some nice wordplay for sure, but does it really talk about anything significant, not really. Many UG guys have the wordplay but use it to talk about stuff that matters. Does Wayne write his own songs? I am curious.

ive heard that wayne uses a ghost writer for many of his songs, though thats never been confirmed

not all their songs are like that though, maybe the ones that get played on the airways because thats what people want to hear

those guys can spit some real **** too

Examples? I don't think I've heard a T.I. song with any meaningful lyrics. Same goes for Chamillionaire.

some UG rappers I like, there are many more:

Immortal Technique (dont like some of his radical politics, but some of his work sends chills down your spine, do yourself a favor and listen to Dance With the devil)

Pharoe Monch is sick

You ever listen to "You Never Know" by Immortal technique. great lyrics. And Pharoahe Monch is tight, I love "Desire".

listen to both their new mixtapes

you cant go off of what you hear on your local "hits" radio station... of course the songs that make those for rap dont usually have the greatest lyrics

if you want to hear the big time guys really just flow or whatnot listen to their mixtapes

Yeah I have listened to more or less all of IT's stuff except the stuff that i deem just awful (Bin Laden for example). Being from NY and knowing people involved in 911, some of IT's work just makes me want to kill him, much of it is brilliant tho. Desire is amazing, both the song and album. Monch and Masta Ace are both sick, the best NY has to offer right now imo.

You talking about Gillie's publicity stunt. If don't see how Gillie can say he wrote the C2 when wayne goes hard on mixtapes weekly. Wayne freewrites all of his music to my knowing.

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned Tech N9ne, but he is one of the most unique guys around. Check out Absolute Power, Tormented, Imma Tell, Einstien, Slither, Worst Enemy, Midwest Choppers, and Caribou Lou, as well as damn near everything else he has done.

i hope so, it would be sad if 2 people were responsible for the horrible unlistenable lyrics of lil wayne.

He is extremely unique, how many satan worshipping rappers with red hair do you know? But despite being unique he is awful.

I would have to disagree on the being awful thing, I personally think he is awesome. I also am not positive of his supposed devil worshipping, if he ever says anything along those lines I'm sure it is for the particular story he is telling. Even if he were a satan worshipper, does that really make him worse than any other rapper, if they really have done what they say they have (which they haven't). Here is a little bit of an interview with Tech N9ne that will show you he isn't satanic, and that he is a stand up guy and one of the few class acts in the rap industry. It is a bit of a read, but he comes across as a good guy who isn't concerned about creating a "persona" like almost every other rapper (mainstream at least), 95% of mainstream rappers are just characters playing out parts and giving their lines. I have posted the excerpt I'm talking about, here is a link to the full interview if anyone is interested. http://www.lawrence.com/news/2003/dec/11/interview_with/

"You've got new tattoos. ("Liberate" along the length of his right forearm, "Me" along his left.)

At first I wasn't gonna get one. I'd only had one tattoo before then, ‘cause it's gotta mean a lot for me to put it on my body for the rest of my life. So at the time of this "Beef" soundtrack I knew that my past friends would really be truly tryin' to kill me because of the **** that I say in the song (Beef), and I just felt like it's time for me to be freed from all the ********, man, just liberate me, take me away from here. When I say here I mean away from evil. And me tryin' to get away from evil is ironic because they call me a devil worshiper. I'm really tryin' to be free from a lot of the darkness. ‘Cause it follows me. Also I'm with a lot of angels that dig me.

Tell me about demons.

Demons down here. Let me tell you what demons mean to me. To me, someone that deliberately tries to bring you down, somebody that practices deception, somebody tries to make you think somethin' else when it's not the real. And I got a lot of people tryin' to do that to me. Got a lot of people that turn on me after all the love I showed ‘em, and after I take my love away they show me their true colors, which is the demonic side of ‘em. Tryin' to take money from me, puttin' out bootleg CDs after I'm not with you anymore, makin' money off me and not givin' me any. Demons. People that try to hurt you deliberately, for no reason, try to bring you down, try to hurt everybody around you, because they're jealous. Only demons are jealous, and don't want to see a mother****** get ahead. And that's ****** up about the Black community, ‘cause that's one thing we have that plagues us, is jealousy in our community, because a lot of us don't want to see us get ahead and do well for our families. And a lot of us... when I say us I mean African Americans... if I'm not gonna be gettin' it, he's not gonna be gettin' it either. Look at rap. Jah Rule, 50 cent, Tupac, Biggie, Jay-Z, Naz. Y'know, these people fight. You heard 50 cent gettin' shot 9 times, and Tupac gettin' shot to death, and Biggie bein' shot to death over rap beefs. You don't hear about Enrique Iglesias and Marc Anthony talkin' **** about each other over tracks, and you don't hear about Metallica ******' with Ozzy. It's something that plagues our community. Jealousy. And I have a lot of demons pretending to be angels around me so they can get a little bit of what I got. But what is in the dark always shall come to light, and it always comes to light, and people are the biggest upset, and people'll let you down all the time ‘cause I don't expect a lot, I just expect a lot of good times, kickin' it. Let's have a good time before we die, but these demons are a mother******. I got cats wantin' to kill me over this music, now, since I been back from this tour, and now I can't go places I used to go, my bodyguards gotta go with me. I just got back from this tour November 2nd. They had a screening of Tupac's movie (Tupac Resurrection) a week after my birthday. 103 had a screening. I got there kinda late. So me and my bodyguards and a couple of my group members went. It was so crowded that we had to sit toward the front, 3 rows from the front row. So the entrance is behind us. 20 minutes into the movie, it's gettin' good, and BOOM, I feel somethin' hit my head, harder than ever. I get up, and it's my past business partner, Diamond, y'know Boss Hoss, jealous, and mad at me for what I said in the song, the truth. By the time I got up, my bodyguards already had him, and pushed him out of the theatre. You got old people runnin' out, kids screamin, made me look so horrible. All we did is hold him down until the police came. We did it right. There was like 7 people, we coulda stomped him out, damn near killed him, but that ain't us. He's a demon. He's sick that 'm not there anymore; he's sick that I'm not over there gettin' him money anymore; he's sick that I'm doin' it and they're not, and they miss me over there. So I told him in the song everything he did, and he tried to steal on me from the back in a movie theatre. While he's on the ground, squirmin', tryin' to get up, I'm like, "I didn't think you'd do this to me, homie." He's like, "I'm gonna kill you, don't even worry." I've never been involved in nothin' like that in my life. And it's all over this music. Jealousy. People take you away from your normal way of kickin' it. I've never changed, not once. People always say, "You think you big now." No I don't, I'm still the same, I'm still tryin' to get there. It's people that change because they start feelin' inferior around you."

wow you obviously have not listened to tech at all, considering he pretty much goes over this topic on a couple albums, and clearly states that he's not a satan worshipper. why even open your mouth if you don't ,know what you're talking about>? tech is amazing lyrically on most albums and has a unique delivery and strays from mainstream music. the problem is a guy who's black with red hair isn't "hood" enough for most rappers to swallow and he's still to rap for rock radio. compared to 90% of the industry right now, tech is on a higher level.
