The ball gets to the corner infield so quick. I've played first and third and it's really all you can do to get your glove up and hope to block the ball sometimes. Can't imagine standing out there defenseless as a base coach. He left two young boys and a wife, hopefully the team/league/players association will be able to take care of them.

Not to mention another child on the way. Always sad when kids have to grow up without a parents.

I remember him from his stint in the majors. He seems like he will be remembered as a great ballplayer, coach, and father.

RIP Mike Coolbaugh.

This absolutely terrible. Strange thing is too that a pitcher on that team also got hit in the left temple by a ball and was in the hospital for a week earlier this year.

Guys, knock it off. Show a little respect for three kids that are going to be growing up without their father now, please. Take the name calling and saying something that happened in a fictional movie is worse somewhere else.

i hit a line drive that went past a first base "coach's" face in a pickup game at summer camp once. she didnt even see it coming. scared the bejeezus out of me. im surprised the base coaches dont wear helmets since the dont have a glove for protection.

Man that is terrible. Really wish the best for his family.

I would feel absolutely sick if I was the guy who hit the ball. Even though it was totally out of my control, I still would feel horrible.

I can't imagine being that hitter. Every time you step out on to the field it would be a constant reminder of what happened

I'd like to point out some irony i discovered today.

In the 2002 BA Baseball Almanac that I was reading on my toilet today, I noticed that Mike Coolbaugh hit a home run in the 2001 AAA All Star game. Further up on that exact page, was an article entitled "Too Much Tragedy" outlining the deaths of minor league players that year.

just ironic to me.

RIP Mike Coolbaugh. I also feel bad for his family, and the player who hit him. I know if I was him, I would feel horrible.
