I really want to know just how this happened, because I never thought the bridge was in bad condition. Terrorism? Faulty Engineering? My thoughts and prayers are with those who were injured or lost their lives.

Ever since I was a kid I get a little scared when going over a bridge. I always picture what it would be like if an earthquake happened or it just collapsed. I don't trust those buster ass engineers/construction workers.

princefielder28

They were doing work on the bridge recently and they suspect faulty engineering.

Atleast one person is dead.....reporter saw an individual who had fallen to the pavement. Very sad story to say the least.

I hate bridges, the reason I dont go to Ocean City MD more often is cause the Bay Bridge is a monsterous bridge that goes way up and semmingly lasts forever.

Prayers and thoughts to the people involved.

People that go to the U of M are going to be in a tricky situation. That bridge is right next to the campus, and the Metrodome.

I heard something about that they extended the bridge to a couple more lanes a couple years ago, and that they didn't add any extra support as the bridge's support were made to hold a certain weight. Or something like that. And, it was not an act of terrorism as I head that the road basically slid at an angle. If it was c4 or something at the support systems, the bridge whould have gone straight down and stay parallel. Instead, if you look at the pictures, it is not parallel, but slanted.

Very scary stuff. Thoughts and prayers go out to everyone effected by this tragedy.

Good thinking. I am having second thoughts as to whether or not I really need to bring mine to college. But I probably will, sense none of my friends are bringing theirs.

when i would go to my grandparent's house in Iowa, we'd have to cross the Mississippi in Dubuque Iowa, and every time we went over that bridge i was scared of something like this happening.

Worst tragedy in my life in the great state of Minnesota. Latest # I have heard are seven dead. Thoughts and prayers go out to all. Scary thing is my brother was on this very bridge this afternoon before it collapsed.

Are you kidding me? Do you realize how stupid most people are when it comes to Geography? I met a girl last weekend that thought there was 55 states, and this was a girl who was in college. I know another who I was able to convince that Delaware was a European country. Not to mention that something close to 50% of Americans cannot find Iraq on a map.
I'd be willing to bet that more people believe the Mississippi river starts in Mississippi than those who know it starts in Minnesnowta.

Near me there is a bridge you might be familiar with. The London Bridge. Though falling down has never been a problem.

why are people making jokes about this?

Because this is the internet, where remorse is always second to humor. (As unfortunate as that is.)

why are people making jokes about this?

Because bringing levity to a situation of tragic circumstances is a vital element of the human condition.

As sad as it is, people die. If you spent your whole life acknowledging this, you wouldn't have a life.

Its not so much a lack of empathy as it is a sense of detachment. Yes this incident is tragic and yes its a shame that people died, but as stated before death is a mere fact of life. I mean you're up in arms about this incident with so far only 7 people have died, but where is call for compassion or outrage over the lack of empathy on the number of soldiers that die in Iraq on a daily basis? The point is that when tragic things like this happen, most see it and are saddened for a moment but in the grand scheme of things this incident doesn't really hit home because its not effecting most on an individual basis.

Man, real sad situation. Last count has it at 9 dead, 60 injured and 20 still missing...

As you may or may not know I am based out of Minnesota and while I don't live in Minneapolis (far from it actually) I drive right over that bridge every time I go to the Dome to see the Twins or Vikings.

Its all about The U

Minnesota officials were warned as early as 1990 that the bridge that collapsed into the Mississippi River was "structurally deficient," yet they relied on patchwork repairs and stepped-up inspections that unraveled amid a thunderous plunge of concrete and automobiles.

Yeah, but there were prolly a lot more. Granted it has been 17 years, that is how Minnesota has always been. We've never had the best roads, and they were working on this.

26 kids were in the bus...but it didn't go over...they were all able to get out the emergency back door...the deaths and injuries came from the part of the bridge that feel all the way down to the river.
