Nationally-televised preseason games

***********************************************

We NEED football.

Shefter reports that Duece McAllister, like Willie Parker, won't be playing today. And in the interview with Steelers HC Mike Tomlin (get used to saying that), rookie Lawrence Timmons apparently won't be playing either.

Two guys I'm looking forward to seeing are Antonio Pittman (NO) and LaMarr Woodley (PIT).

I'd crap my pants if we signed Charlie Frye. I think he should have been given more time in Cleveland.

And the Saints need to look and see which CB's are going to be released because we need more competition at that position. None of our CB's have impressed me at all.

Frye is the worst starting QB in the league, and also winner of the dumbest play/throw of 2006 (versus the Raiders). The sooner the Browns drop him to third on the depth chart, the better.

Great fade route by Santonio Holmes, and pretty much a perfect throw.

Jason Craft got beat. So far it seems like all of our CBs have gotten beat, Jason David got beat on the previous deep route, and Mike McKenzie struggled early in the game. :( Surprisingly Fred Thomas has been the least burnt CB thus far.

Willie Reid.. I think he needs to work into the game.. He's essentially a rookie.. He had 1 return last year (against the chargers) Which he made a 0 gain into a 15 yard gain..

Willie Reid has the potential.. Anyone who watched him at FSU will back me up on this. He just needs to get his confidence back.

Personally I think it's what we've lacked. Pre-2007 our past 3 draft picks were on offense and we haven't fully utilized them.

We have too much talent at WR and TE to just try to run the ball 40 times a game from a power I.

Again it's just pre-season but I think this is the best offense we could run right now.. I'm ecstatic about how our defense is playing.

I thought the Steelers Offense looked really good from what we saw this early they ran their plays smoothly, and crisply. Arian's Offense is very creative and versatile sort of reminds of a Sean Payton Lite Offense. They used a lot of multiple WR sets, and ran a lot of well timed Screen passes.

Geo
08-05-2007, 10:25 PM
I'm not sure how many are aware that Bruce Arians was Peyton Manning's first quarterbacks coach in the pros, serving that role with the Indianapolis Colts from 1998 to 2000. He then went on to become the offensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns from 2001 to 2003 (hence why Kelly Holcomb flourished there, having been with the Colts from 1996 to 2000). From 2004 to 2006 he's been the wide receivers coach of the Steelers, until being promoted to offensive coordinator this past offseason.

The Saints are one (major) offensive injury away from being a 6-10 ball club. That defense is simply not up to snuff.

Geo
08-05-2007, 10:48 PM
I want to say the Saints regress this year, but:

(1) they only had a 10-6 record last year; and
(2) they play the NFC West and AFC South this year, and can win their fair share of those games (they played the AFC North and NFC East last year, incidentally).

So it's likely they can still finish 9-7 or 10-6, even if the team remains flawed. I'm still not sold Tampa Bay's defense will bounce back enough for them to make a run, although Carolina will do better this year with their offensive line healthy and MeShawn gone.

PS. We should team up for a write up, Shiv. :p

You can tell that from 1 Pre-Season game? the very first one at that.

I don't think anyone is expecting this Saints Defense to be All-World, but I would hold off on basing judgments off of the very first Pre-Season game. The Steelers were a fired up ball club. They wanted to break in their new Head Coach with a victory and wanted to show that last season was an aberration. The Saints treated this like a scrimmage, with a very Vanilla Game plan.

Quite possible the Defense will still be a glaring weakness for the Saints this season, but I wouldn't base it off of 1 Pre-Season game.

Anybody that uses a preseason game to judge a team needs their heads examined. It means absolutely nothing as do all the preseason games. Get real folks!
Too bad, the 1st preseason game isn't like the old days when NFL draftees played against the reigning NFL champion. That was a game worth watching. The preseason games today are just a bunch of crap where HC's try to use their starters as little as possible fearing an injury that will reck their season. They only use 1 preseason game to really prepare their veterans for the coming season, the rest of the games, you lucky if the vets play a quarter of the game. The only teams that vary from this formula slightly are teams that stunk it up last year or have new HC's. They tend to use their vets a bit more trying to find success or breaking in a new system. Pittsburgh should have won this game, their HC falls into that catagory while the game meant nothing to New Orleans.

Last year the Saints were down right terrible in Pre-Season. They went 1-3 leading some people to believe we would be picking top 5 in the Draft again. That didnít turn out too bad. The Pre-Season is not a good indicator at all of how teams will do once the Games count. We always see teams dominate in pre-season only to fall flat on their faces in the regular season, and visa versa. Heck the Colts have gone 1-8 in the last two Pre-Seasons combined.

Sean Payton, and Garry Gibbs hide their Playbook as much as possible during the Pre-Season. They run very basic, and vanilla schemes so they donít overexpose their hand. They don't run their various pre-snap motions, and formation shifts, they run very simple coverage schemes, and don't bring out any blitz packages. (Like many teams do) Their goals are not to win meaningless games, but rather use them to evaluate the bottom half of the roster, and try and keep the starters as healthy as they can.

I don't think the Saints need to take any worry about this. They have a very good offense with alot of playmakers and a great QB. They will put up points.

On defense they arn't great. Last year they were able to overcome not having many big name players on the defense and played pretty good. Will Smith and Charles Grant are a greta pair of DEs but thats about all you can go into with the defense.

I think their offense is good enough to overcome to their defense much like the Colts did all last year in the regular season. I'm expecting 8-10 wins for the Saints.

What additions have they made on the defense? Not one player whom I would consider an impact player. The point I am making is they are completely reliant upon their offense carrying them. If they can stay at full strength on offense all year they can be alright. I like Charles Grant and Will Smith as bookends, but other than that...

You have no stars? Who are Reggie Bush, Drew Brees, Duece McAllister then? Hell you could even throw Allen, Grant, and Colsten in there. The Saints are primarily composed of a few high impact guys on offense, a solid offensive line, two tremendous defensive ends, and a bunch of jobbers on defense. I mean, you signed a guy to be your starting safety that couldn't cut it for the Bengals. The ******* Bengals.

And the fact that you don't know what the back 7 is pretty much sums up everything else.

I'm pretty sure the Saints will make the playoffs again, and I'm pretty sure that you'll face a team that can run the ball and stop the run and get sent straight home. But we shall see. All I'm saying is that I called it heading into the playoffs last year and I'll call it again.

What additions have they made on the defense? Not one player whom I would consider an impact player. The point I am making is they are completely reliant upon their offense carrying them. If they can stay at full strength on offense all year they can be alright. I like Charles Grant and Will Smith as bookends, but other than that...

Well like I mentioned previously what you saw last night wasn't a good performance, but also it was the very first Pre-Season game and probably not the best indicator of what we'll see in the regular season. These guys just got off the plane to report to Camp a week ago, and usually they would have another week to prepare for a game like this. The Steelers went out and played aggressive and physical, I believe they blitzed something like 5 out of their first 7 Defensive plays. (not something you see very often in Pre-Season) While the Saints looked like a team going through the motions just trying to get back on the plane to Jackson, MS in one piece.

Also this was the first live fire game for for some of the new Defensive acquisitions like Jason David, and Kevin Kaesviharn. They still are trying to get adjusted into our scheme, and are learning the terminology. Do you think every team has to go out and blow the bank on high priced Free agents in order to improve? That's not Payton or Gibb's style they prefer to pick up reasonably priced players they believe fit the scheme, and stress teaching technique and fundamentals.

Geo
08-06-2007, 11:44 AM
CB Jason David and DT Kendrick Clancy were good signings, I thought. LB Brian Simmons also.

Also, Mike McKenzie looked almost as slow in last year's preseason when (in Week 2) he was thoroughly abused by Marvin Harrison. Granted he's not getting any faster, but he needs to knock off some of the rust.

I think they made a mistake by taking Robert Meachem, an offensive player, over the several prized defensive prospects that were available. Chris Houston could have come in right away and play because he has experience against top talent, whereas Usama Young probably won't be able to. Paul Posluszny, likewise, could have been an immediate starter at Linebacker. I understand B.P.A to a degree, but not when your team was already unbalanced in favor of one side of the team.

You have no stars? Who are Reggie Bush, Drew Brees, Duece McAllister then?

so in your theory , all teams are full of stars , when they have a handfull of players who are legit to start on a few other teams... and reggie bush is a second year man , not yet a star.

Hell you could even throw Allen, Grant, and Colsten in there.

who is allen ?
colston is a second year man , too. is michael clayton a star because of a good rookie year ?

The Saints are primarily composed of a few high impact guys on offense, a solid offensive line, two tremendous defensive ends, and a bunch of jobbers on defense.

and again , that doesnt make a team "full of stars"
most of them nowbody knew , until last season

I mean, you signed a guy to be your starting safety that couldn't cut it for the Bengals. The ******* Bengals.

so that is the indication for having a bad back 7 ?
he is fighting for a starter job with (2nd) round disappointement josh bullocks , when everything went right , kaesviharn he is our backup.

And the fact that you don't know what the back 7 is pretty much sums up everything else.

ok , so someone who hasnt english at his first language isnt allowed to ask for a understanding of a sentence ?

yeah that sums it up , you are the only one here with sense of football and iam a bum with no idea.... very objective

I'm pretty sure the Saints will make the playoffs again, and I'm pretty sure that you'll face a team that can run the ball and stop the run and get sent straight home. But we shall see. All I'm saying is that I called it heading into the playoffs last year and I'll call it again.

ok , but when they are reaching the P/Os again , i would be glad....

p.s. : now , that someone of the helpful people told me what a back 7 is ....
i can say youre right to a certain extent.

but you havent told me about the bad players , yet . or do you have to look on the nfl.com stats section to , name the starter and their bad perfomance ?

but the saints hasnt picked a LB in round 1 for a long time now. they have other priorities .... and not picking houston ( in combination with not picking posz ) made me glad on game day , iam not solved on him , and it has nothing to do with the carroll thing. he isnt a good player for our system ... and shutting down good college WR by (mostly) pure athleticism doesnt mean you are a shut down corner in the NFL ... and most of the teams picking right after the saints , seems to confirm with that.

īthe signing of jason david is much more of an immediate impact , than picking houston , plus david is just 24

Oh believe me I don't expect much from him even if he does stay healthy. Some people got excited about the signing but I don't think it'll pay off at all. He's second on the depth chart at WLB.

Still, I want to see him play since really no one has had the chance in the last few years to see him actually play lol

Shiver
08-08-2007, 11:58 AM
I don't see how he can play WLB. He is a 250-lbs linebacker who doesn't play well in space. He was successful as the run thumper in Baltimore's 3-4 next to Ray Lewis, other than that... Even when he was healthy in Atlanta he didn't make any impact. Does the WLB have an atypical role in Cincinnati that I wouldn't know about?

PalmerToCJ
08-08-2007, 01:21 PM
No, I'm the same as you. Not sure why they moved him to WLB. Ahmad would be better suited for it than he is. I figured he was signed initially to either backup Ahmad or so that Ahmad could be moved outside but that's clearly not the case.

If anything at least he provides experience at LB that our team completely lacks but even if he's healthy I expect his impact to be minimal.

How has Brooks been doing in camp? I know he's matured a lot, I'd love to see him return to his sophomore form.

He's relaying in all the calls and setting up the defense at the line. He's back in football shape as well so they say he's gained some more speed. Thus far things are looking great, he's making some mistakes still but everyone on the defense is hinting that he'll be the difference maker and that seems the case.

His attitude has taken a complete 180, last year he didn't put much effort into ST and this year while he knew he was the starting MLB he was doing a great job on kickoff coverage.

Last year he could blitz and run down players but in coverage he just got lost. This year I think he'll be the leader of the D (as he has said he wants) and feel more comfortable in coverage. I think easily his biggest area to work on is getting off blocks, last year he struggled like every young LB in getting off blocks.

I say with a ton of confidence that if Ahmad plays 14+ games he'll lead the team in tackles. What I saw in the Tampa/Carolina games last year was just amazing. He was already good then in run support and blitzing, now he can set up the defense and cover the pass as well. Plus in camp he sets up the defense against Carson and usually Carson checks off and it's good for Ahmad to setup the defense off of that. I can't wait to see him play this year. He'll be #55 this year.

And Shiver, I forgot to mention in my other post that Hartwell is down to 230 something... The coaching staff asked that he drop 12 pounds before camp which he did, not that this will help much but he is lighter. He has had some INT's and FF's in camp, but of course it's just camp.

Also to any of you that'll be watching the Lions/Bengals game tomorrow night Eric Henderson (former DE Georgia Tech) will be making his debut at SLB. Shaun Smith (former DT, signed with Browns this offseason) said he was the next Adalius Thomas when he was talking about his old teammates and many other defensive players have raved about him in camp. Obviously he's very raw at this point and hopefully won't see much PT but he's been ok in coverage in camp and will be able to blitz from SLB or DE in passing situations. Should be a nice weapon if he pans out but he's got a long way to go.

As bad a starting QB as he currently is, he'll still get cool points for naming his kid Maximus. Yes, his son's name is Maximus Johnson.

Ridiculously jawesome.

Rookie Anthony Gonzalez made his first catch.

Also, keep an eye on the RB in there, Clifton Dawson. UDFA Harvard, could very well win the 3rd RB job.

WAI 2 GO, SORGI.

He did look good at TC. Bloom is a joke and I've called him a joke since day 1. One guy I really like is Jason Avant who looked good. Not very fast, but catches everything.

Anything is possible with Jim Sorgi at the helm.

I want to see Josh Betts get some snaps or Mike McGann. Betts only had a brief cameo in the Cincy game last year and since there's no Shaun King or John Navarre; he should see some. McGann most likely gets the cameo.

Bad news for Free

Rookie LT Doug Free, who did a nice job of protecting Tony Romo, has a sprained right knee. He won't be back tonight and we'll find out more after the game.

At least Free will have something in common with Flozell Adams and Marc Colombo now.
