Most "guaranteed" money comes in the form of defferred roster bonus money that a player may or may not ever see. A franchise tag is straight up guaranteed cash.

BTW...

Guaranteed money is exactly that. Guaranteed.

If a player signed a 5 year 50 million dollar contract with 20 million guaranteed, then as long as he doesnt mess up off the field, he will get the 20 million no matter what. He might never see the other 30 million but guaranteed money is money that has to be paid.

Hence the term "dead money" when you cut players from the roster. There would be no such thing as dead money if they all had non-guaranteed contracts.

10 Million to sign is not too horrible. We are talking about Justin Smiley money at that point.

But 20 million guaranteed is a huge deal.

That's Joey Porter territory.

That's a pretty sizeable contract.
Porter was given 12 million to sign, with a base contract of roughly 4 million per year. If Carey could get a deal like Porter's he might be inclined to sign, but the difference is very minimal (10 million and a chance at FA in a year or 16 million and being stuck under a 5 year contract with a 4 mil base salary the next four years).

I haven't gone through the last 60 pages to see if this has been discussed or not, but I was hoping to get a little evaluation on Jake Long and Phillip Merling. How are they doing so far?

So they must be doing terrible if no one is willing to talk about them.

Long has been pretty lockdown most of the season, not perfect but done a very good job, gets a little sloppy from time to time. Merling has been a situational guy most of the season, has looked good in spurts but we won't really be able to tell much about him until next season.

I'm talking about guaranteed money.

Who cares how much he gets to sign. If he gets tagged, there is no signing bonus. He just gets 10 million guaranteed.

Porter got 20 million guaranteed (12 to sign and another 8 in other money) and that's how much Carey would be looking at.

I mean everything your saying is the exact opposite of how players feel.

Why do you think players get upset at getting tagged every year? Because if they get hurt the year they are tagged all they get is that 10 million tag number. But if they sign a long term deal and get 20 million guaranteed, then when they get hurt then walk away from the game with 20 million instead of 10.

Your confusing a signing bonus is guaranteed money.

They were going over Long's numbers on the radio the other day.

He has given up 3 sacks all season and has had 3 false starts. Not bad at all for a rookie starting at LT all season. He has been rock solid.

Merling has looked pretty good. 3-4 ends aren't big numbers producers but he has held up very well against the run backing up Vonnie Holliday and has gotten pressure on the QB in spurts. He hasn't had to really do a ton this season since he shares time with Holliday, Langford and Starks but he has looked very promising when he is in there.

Congrats, you deserved it. Give credit to Huizenga for spending the money and getting the management team. It all starts in the Front Office and works its way down.

BTW, what is Jason Taylor doing this off season? I hear he gets lots of respect in DC for his dancing skills! Him and the GM are BFF. LOL!

Does Ginn not return punts anymore?

draftguru151

He does some times but not most of the time. He let a majority of them bounce and when he did return them he didn't do anything.

Ginn is good for 1 solid play per game. Thats it.

He'll come up with 1 big catch, or one nice run or 1 solid return. Never a combination and rarely does he he string together a bunch of catches. What a wasted pick. He shows so much promise but he has seriously regressed since earlier in the year. I would not mind one bit if we traded him for a 2nd rounder in next years draft but I doubt anyone would pay that and taking any less isnt worth it. Better to hope he pans out.

I think that's a little harsh. I actually think he's shown progress as the season has gone on as a WR. He's not consisted, but he's not being a pansy like he was earlier.

IMO he does struggle when we put him in on kick returns as he tries to east-west way too much rather than just going up field.

Progress?

I think he's regressed. Big time. For a little stretch in the middle of the yea, he was getting alot of balls throw his way and was some plays. He had a couple real good games.

As the year has gone on, he has lost more and more PT to Brandon London and Devone Bess as well as losing his return duties.

He has gone backwards. Not progressed.

And yes, he's still a pansy like he was earlier. How many times is he gonna slide so a defender wont hit him? He's a damn WR and he doesn't even try to make people miss or get any YAC

Quick question. Has De'Cody Fagg already worked out for you? If so, how'd he do? I've been trying to find some info on this but can't seem to find any, and maybe you Dolphins fans have some sites where his results might have been posted.

FYI, De'Cody Fagg was the WR that suffered a nearly-career-ending knee injury in last year's combine and recovered less than two months ago. So far he supposedly had private workouts for a couple teams, and I know the Dolphins were one of them.

Here's a link on some info of him if you wanna read it:

Go check the Herald.com, Sun-sentinel.com and Palmbeachpost.com

articles about his workout on all 3 sites.

His agent says the workout went great and spewed a bunch of agent mumbo jumbo about how good the kid is. Miami coaches and staff didn't feel the same way because he didn't offer him a contract and we are desperate for WRs.

Hope the kid does well and best of luck to him. But if he couldnt even get a camp contract with us, hes not likely to stick anywhere else either.

03-15-2009, 07:29 PM
Who is Drew Mormino?

He was drafted by us 2 years ago (the infamous Ginn draft) in the 6th or 7th round. He basically got drafted because he played with Joe Staley. If not, nobody would know him. He was gonna start for us as a rookie (back when we had zero OL and basically were forced into starting him) but he got hurt and missed the entire season. Sparano got here and one of his 1st moves was cutting Mormino.

Havent heard a thing from him since.

What do you guys think of our receiving corp. right now? I like Camarillo and I think he's a solid #2, or a very good slotman, I am really high on Bess and I feel he can be an outstanding slotman in the league, and I really do not like Ted Ginn, I was one of the guys about ready to buy a Brady Quinn jersey when I saw him on the board, and got extremely pissed when we picked Ginn, however that was awhile ago, Ginn I can only see being a decent burner in the league, much like Bernard Berrian, and I really do not think he fits our offense.

I think if need be our WR corp. can do for another season, I think they are a bit underrated. With that being said, we still need a possession WR to compliment Ginn.

I think we'll take one of the following in the 2nd or 3rd: Hakeem Nicks, Heyward-Bey, Brian Robiskie

And then I think we take one of the following WR in the 6th or 7th: Dudley Guice, Brian Hartline, Johnny Knox, Brooks Foster

My guess is Nicks at 44 and Guice at 181

While most Miami fans did the same as you on draft day 2006, I am not quite as down as you on Ginn. I agree that he is not a #1. But he can be a terrific deep threat if there was a legitimate guy opposite him. Camarillo and Bess are terrific complementary WR's, but a legit guy opposite Ginn would make the whole corps very effective. That being said, I would be surprised if they went that way early in the draft..

If Nicks is there at #44, he would be great value and a solid pick. I am just not sure they are going WR that early. I guess it depends on how the draft falls out. I really think they should go best player available for those first few picks and see how it turns out. Part of me does not think he is going to use one of the first 3 picks on a WR. Just a hunch..

What do you guys think about the possibilities of us re-signing Ronnie after the season?

And if we didn't, what would you guys think about drafting someone like C.J. Spiller in the 1st to take his place?

He's been a core Special teamer the last couple of years, and even started the first few games this year. The only problem is that he just isn't that good. Doesn't seem like he wants it either.

I totally agree with this sentiment. He actually played pretty well early this season but he got beat deep on many occasions. He just wasn't starting material and he doesn't have the ability to play in the nickel either. If anyone does pick him up, they are getting a core special teams player and thats it. I thought he could play FS well but he isn't smart enough to play there.

Brown, Ricky, and Cobbs are all UFA and its unclear whether any of them will end up returning.

That being said, I'll say no way to Ingram --> Miami being a done deal. Firstly, I think there's a real slim chance we end up staying at pick 15. Ireland has expressed a strong desire to get a second round pick in any way possible and without having any players to shop (or the ability to even shop them), I'd be pretty surprised if we ended up staying put. If Ingram was still available after trading down I think its a possibility still but I get this feeling that we won't address RB until day 2.

I think unless you're getting a RB like Adrian Peterson, taking a RB in the 1st round is getting bad value. With all of the depth this year, taking Ingram in the 1st when we could potentially get a DeMarco Murray or Daniel Thomas in the 3rd is a bad idea. I still say that we sign DeAngelo Williams as a FA making the need for a RB non-existent (at least in terms of investing a high draft pick in the position).

However, if the lockout ends up dragging on long enough so that no player movement happens prior to the draft, we might be forced to take Ingram if he's there based on the uncertainty of filling that hole via free agency. That's the only situation where I can see us going RB in Round 1 even though I don't want it to happen.

I think our biggest need is to shore up the interior line, it's a shame that there's no prospects ranked in our vicinity that make sense at 15 so I'm hoping for a draft down to recoup some extra day 2 picks.

After that, I'd love to see us look towards adding pieces to the secondary or getting another OLB to platoon with Wake and also take some pressure off of him. Right now, he's the only reliable pass rusher we've got. If I was confident he could play OLB in a 3-4 I'd love to see Justin Houston at 15.
