I dont know how many people have seen it, but it was on fox in my area so i had the chance to watch the whole game. I came away with these impressions

JT o' sullivan is a mobile guy. he reminded me of a more accurate mike mcmahon.

Dan O played pretty well, including throwing 2 touchdowns in the fourth quarter for the come from behind win.

CJ made a couple of nice catches while we were in the two minute drill on Leon Hall. He also commanded alot of attention, hence his only 2 balls thrown to him were caught. he was the reason that shaun macdonald opened up wide open. look for that to happen alot this year.

We really should keep 2 out of these 4 recievers, Cliff Russell, Ronald Bellemy, Troy Walters, and Kevin Kasper. I would say Walters, because he can return kicks, and Bellemy as well, hes a local guy and he made a couple of nice catches including an unbelievable one in the back of the end zone to start the comeback.

Our O-line had its moments, but it also gave up alot. I'll be watching for them to improve throughout preseason.

The Defensive ends need to get pressure on the quarterback as all the pressure was coming from the inside, but that is nothing new. Corey Smith made a nice play rushing the quarterback and stripping the ball.

The cover 2 defense was getting picked apart most of the day, but we had alot of new faces who need to adjust to playing in space and in their zones, that should change.

Keith Smith gave up a couple of plays but also made a nice interception.

Johnny Baldwin was all over the field making plays for the D.

We need to keep the onside kick specialist. he deserves a roster spot because we will be playing from behind in some games this year obviously, he could also serve as the permanent kick off specialist to give Hanson's leg a rest.

thoughts?

A win is better than a loss but the 1st exhibition really means little. Our 3rd/4th string brought us back but we need to see more from our 1st and 2nd string.
The 4th exhibition game when the regulars usually play 90% of the game will be the true test, until then it is really hard to judge.

i didn't point out the win, i was just making first game observations. and actually the 3rd game is when the starters play 3 quarters, they leave the 4th game to the guys trying to make the team. and i do agree, it is just nice to see some guys making plays

Positives:
CJ looked very good. He was commanding a lot of attention and the TD pass to mcdonald was a result of that.

I think this was a step in the right direction. Their attitude seems different. In the past, they just folded. 17 unanswered points doesn't happen in 2006.
A lot of people don't think that wins and losses count in the pre-season, but when you're a team that just doesn't win - that's a big hurdle to cross. There's a lot to be said for confidence in the locker room.

Negatives:
They were soundly beat in the 1st Qtr when it was 1st string vs. 1st string. Cincy moved the ball at will.

No pass rush whatsoever.

O-line not opening holes for our RBs.

They did too open a couple of holes, when we were in that 3-wide set. It was when they went to the 2-TE set that they got stuffed, probably because it was totally obvious they were running at that point.

I hope Baldwin has as much promise as it looked like last night, because Paris Lenon isn't going to cut it.

I cant wait until CJ gets into game shape, because he will be awesome, and also, Baldwin should be starting by midseason.. He was everywhere...Also i have a lot of hope for Keith Smith.

from what I saw (highlight) we looked good.

Few questions: CJ -> just how much did he do? those two catches looked rely good.

Baldwin -> if he keeps this up, will he be our starting MLB? (or OLB)

Secondar -> how bad was it?

O-Line -> half-decent?

and just your thoughts on Orlovsky and how the team will do next year, beating the bengals to me says the Lions may be better than expected... but it is still only the offseason.

langston moore-DT i believe was tearing them up after the starters left, and JT and Dan did pretty well with the exception of a couple throws.

He was out there a lot in the second and third quarters. On at least one running play he got kind of half a block on a safety but you could see his effort on the play which was good.
They didn't throw to him all that much, I think a lot of his time out there was simply designed to get him running, get him in rhythm and check his routes later on film.
As far as I could tell, there were three plays in the game where he was the primary receiver. The first one, he ran a deep out and was wide open, but the safety foolishly went to him and left McDonald wide ass open for that 80+ yard bomb. You could kind of see O'Sullivan starting to throw to CJ but saw the wide open WR and adjusted. The other two times CJ was the primary, were his two catches.

Baldwin -> if he keeps this up, will he be our starting MLB? (or OLB)
Let's not get carried away, he looked pretty good but I'm sure he's got a long way to go. At this point, he's just the latest preseason man-crush like Dee McCann or Bill Swancutt. He does have speed and seems to get around the ball, and he looks like he deserves to make the team, but beyond that is still a reach. I'm rooting for him though.

Secondary -> how bad was it?
Who knows? When you line up 10 yards off the line, and backpedal at the snap like your jock is on fire, it's gonna be pretty goddamn hard to stop anything other than a streak route. Are the CB's that bad, or do the coaches call it that way? Or do they call it that way because they're that bad? Hard to say, but if that doesn't change then opposing teams will complete any pass under 10 yards at will, just like they have for 5 years.

O-Line -> half-decent?
Half decent, yes. One sack in the entire game and only a few significant QB pressures. Of course, the sack and a drive-killing pressure were given up by the first unit, which isn't good. Also, in my opinion the running game wasn't too bad out of the 3-wide formations. When they went to bigger formations, though, it was horrible.

and just your thoughts on Orlovsky and how the team will do next year, beating the bengals to me says the Lions may be better than expected... but it is still only the offseason.
Both the backup QB's looked great, really, as well as all the WR's, and I think it shows that the Lions really have the execution down as an entire team when it comes to the passing offense. This isn't a surprise, though I think we are still all holding our breath to see if it really was going to be as good as it "should" be at this point under Martz. I think we can say it will be, even if there are injuries, and that at least is a good thing.

saturday, i believe its against the browns, so we'll see alot of quinn im sure. i think o sullivan is going to win the backup job, its just one game, but he is mobile and has a pretty good arm. i think he could be the next great martz find.

Ok... some things have to be said:

First of all, the fact that our 1st string offense did nothing is completely irrelevant... stop making it sound like we're doomed for 2007. Notice how we came out and ran the ball? The coaches wanted to see where the running game was at, and they got their answer. Why drop back to throw (and risk the sack - and injury to Kitna) in the first preseason game?! Imagine losing either Roy or Kitna in the first preseason game... would be a complete waste.

I think Sims is going to have an incredible year. It seemed that every single play he was on the field for, he ended it either hitting someone or trying to hit someone... was ALL over the field. Crazy.

Bullocks missed that tackle on the first play and it concerned me. It's OK, though... if he can follow it with a hit like he put on 85, I could care less.

If Duckett ever fumbles on the 1 again, he needs to be cut. Yes, it's a bit harsh, but fumbling there is completely unacceptable. Wrap your arms around the ball and pound it in... you're on the 2!

McDonald was a great signing... and I'm glad we took him instead of Curtis. He's a great, young player without the attitude (or ego).

Everyone seems to be concerned with our lack of a pass rush in the first game... which is pathetic. Shaun Rogers and D White were out for the game, which left Redding to get doubled on every play. With a healthy DLine, we'll get pressure.

Baldwin seems to flow out there... reckless, sure, but he makes things happen. I'd love to see a LB group of Bailey-Baldwin-Sims... incredible speed and reckless abandon.

Last, but not least: DanO and JTOS. They really played a good game... came out throwing the ball well and faced constant pressure. Sure, JTOS seemed to have more mobility, but DanO often stood strong in the pocket and made some nice throws (and got hit for it). He also moved up a few times to avoid the rush. The comeback aside, I'm a fan of DanO.

Just my thoughts.

There were a few plays where our QBs could just sit back, but those plays were rare. There was pressure for most of the game (which is why DanO threw the INT). Our protection needs to improve...

The secondary seemed to be too far away to make a play on the ball in the air, but close enough to make the tackle. Ramzee Ramirez had a few nice tackles, including one where he threw the receiver on his back (and caused the incompletion). Keith Smith seemed to be around the play as well, and had that red zone INT. AJ Davis seemed to have a hard time staying with his receiver, but made the tackle when the ball was caught. If the point of the Cover 2 is to "bend and not break", they did just that... holding the Bengals starters to FGs and not TDs. If not for the JTOS INT, they may have not scored an offensive TD.

Starting Secondary was bad, still. Carson Palmer picked em apart. O-Line wasn't that good. We didn't run for much at all, and Edwin Mulitalo gave up the only sack of the game on our side.

But it's the Preseason.. The Offensive and Defensive plays are going to be basic, we're not going to show our cards at all.

Carson Palmer picks most defenses apart. The fact that they didn't allow YAC and made the occasional play says a lot... considering none of our CBs are said to be "good".

If our secondary can do that, and our DLine is healthy, our defense might be "good enough".

How exactly is that a disadvantage for the lions, when the bengals were without their starting tackles as well?????

I don't care who you've got on the OLine, a healthy Rogers and Redding will create problems. With teams focusing on them, it'll be easier for our ends (White, Edwards) to do things 1-1 on the outside.

Good enough like Rex Grossman is a 'good enough' qb for the bears... just not bad enough to mess everything up.

i like our secondary, i think we'll do fine. i really like kenoy kennedy on special teams, hes the enforcer like schlesinger used to be. i also think corey smith has alot of potential, im interested to see how he will do the rest of the preseason he seems like he has alot of speed and hes hungry.

Agree to disagree. Rogers/White being out vs. Levi Brown/Willie Anderson is pretty even in my book.

ehm...?

LT -> RE
LG \
C -> defensive tackles and possibly linebackers
RG /
RT -> LE

so.. Brown and Anderson would be handling Edwards and White rather than Rogers and Redding.
