THE RULES-

1) You're required to pick a minimum of 5 games between the NCAA and NFL per week, starting with the week of Sep 1st. The first college games will be played on Thursday, August 30th. I'll post the spreads sometime during the prior week. Even though the NFL season doesn't begin until the following week, you're still required to make 5 picks for this 1st week of the NCAA season. You can also pick up to 20 games in a given week. I initially considered an unlimited amount, but soon realized that players who are deep in the hole will realize their only shot at victory is to play every game on the slate. Sorry, I'm not gonna sit here and sort through your 46 losses and 23 wins in one week. Twenty is plenty, and the fact that it rhymes is proof. In short, you can pick from 5-20 games each week. No more, no less.

2) You will be allowed one bye week which must be used on or before Dec 30th. This bye week is optional, and is the result of valid concerns about whether or not we'll all be able to be here so consistently for such a long period of time. Also, there will be a 1 win penalty if you end up using this bye week. This is being put into place to stress to people that it's preferred that you play every week and to prevent people from hiding in the corner. Once you've missed a week, there will be an asterisk posted next to your name in the standings as an indicator of such. That way we can keep track. It's not a Barry Bonds asterisk or anything, but if you miss another week you'll be eliminated from the competition. If you know you'll be missing a week, but you still want to make picks, you can pick blind in advance if you choose to do so. Just make the post AND pm me to let me know. Some of us can pretty accurately predict some of the spreads before they come out, so I could see somebody exercising this option if they needed to. This likely won't happen, but I wouldn't want anybody to be eliminated when it could have been avoided.

3) When it comes to Bowl Season, you'll be required to pick at least 12 of the total bowl games on the slate, and you must pick all 5 of the BCS bowls. You're also required to pick 6 of the 11 NFL playoff games, and picking the Super Bowl is a requirement. These high minimums are being put into place to prevent a leader from hiding in the corner, and to kinda tighten the screws and up the difficulty level when it comes to crunch time. There's really no reason for anybody to not be able to pick the biggest games of the year. This will also help prevent an anti-climactic ending to this competition, if that's possible.

4) You must use the spreads posted here each week. I will peel these from one of the more reputable wagering sites such as betcris or bodog and have them posted as early in the week as possible. Spreads change throughout the week. Especially in the NCAA. For this competition, uniformity is paramount. So whatever is posted here, is what goes. Everybody will use the exact same spreads for each game. This will eliminate any disputes and just make things clean and fair.

5) Don't cloud up your pick post with a bunch of comments. Just tell me who you got in list form. Please limit your total picks for the week to a single post if possible. This is not a requirement though. Just try not to get too crazy and make a post for every single game you play. Also, DO NOT EDIT YOUR PICK POST. Ever. If you do, it will be invalidated and you will be penalized 5 wins and your bye week will be used. If you make a mistake, leave the post up and make another below it indicating what happened. Once I see this I'll pm you, and you will be able to edit that first post. This is how edits will be done in this thread. This rule is being put into place to prevent people from deleting picks at a time when they still have at least 5 picks left to be played. I can't keep constant track of everybody's picks so this rule is needed to eliminate any temptation to cheat. The extreme 5 win + loss of bye penalty is necessary to prevent people from tanking an o'fer in favor of a minor penalty.

6) Your pick post needs to appear after the official weekly spread post. That's the point from which I'll scroll for each week's tally. The only exception to this rule is if you're picking blind because you won't be around that week. You'll need to PM me if you choose to do this, and this is perfectly acceptable. Also, remember that the time and date of your post is shown within your post. If you make a pick after the time of kickoff, it won't count.

7) Pushes do not count. If you push, just be glad it doesn't show up in the loss column. This is about wins and losses. The highest winning percentage wins.

8) The winner will be determined by who has the highest winning percentage through the Super Bowl on February 3rd in Arizona. Although it's highly likely the winner will be known before then. In the extremely unlikely event of a tie, the tie breaker will be determined by total points scored in the Super Bowl.

9) These rules may be amended. I just thought this up and probably haven't thought of everything yet.

There is going to be a penalty if the person doesnt make the minium of 5 picks per week. Duck is going to have to work out all of the rules and that definitely has to be one of them.

jballa838

If you fail to do so for even a single week, you'll be eliminated from the competition and thrown out of the party cave (located 2 blocks west of the bat cave) until next season.
i think that is the penalty.

I should hit 50%. I'm guessing somewhere between 50% and 60%. Although with the juice on actual wagering, that might not put in me in positive cash if I was really betting on the games.

I believe I was well over 50% with college basketball this season, in the old thread.

Yeah, I was thinking about this and we might have to have some leniency. The only problem I have is if somebody has a big lead, and they miss a week to protect that. But, I do realize that we all (okay, some of us, maybe) have lives, and we can't always be worrying about an NFLDC fantasy handicappers championship. To alleviate concerns, I think we could have an optional bye week. This bye would need to be used on or before Dec. 30th. of the NFL season. Everybody will still be required to pick 5 bowl games. Once you've used your bye, there will be an asterisk next to your name in the standings to aid in keeping track of everything. And maybe the corresponding NFL week will accompany that. Like this- *w9

However, I do think we need to draw the line somewhere to maintain the integrity of the competition. So if somebody just passes out next to the condom dispenser for weeks on end, they'll have to be booted from the party cave. Also, I checked with my lawyers and they've assured me that I can't be held responsible if anybody contracts any std's while enjoying their stay at the party cave as long the dispenser remains fully operational. So use it, and use it wisely. There will be a large and continuous rotation of ladies who I cannot always vouch for.

So let me know what you guys think of the bye week idea.

Nice, I know you've probably got some good ideas. Anybody with suggestions should feel free to post them. These rules aren't yet set in stone, but they will be soon. Just because I'm running this doesn't mean I'm doing it correctly. I just thought this up while reading Moses' gambling thread. So I'm sure there are still some wrinkles to be ironed out that I haven't thought of.

Looks like we've got a pretty nice group so far. Still plenty more room though for anybody who's interested.

The college spreads have been out for a minute now, but I think I'll post them about a week prior to the first game just to be sure they're as accurate as possible. Once they've been posted on here, they're set in stone as far as this competition is concerned. I'll probably post them between the 22nd-24th. I think I've already found at least 5 games I like for that opening week.

Does anybody have any suggestions as far as the rules are concerned?

i have a question maybe it was already asked or explained but is it 5-20 total games or 5-20 for NFL and 5-20 for NCAA?

5-20 total. You've gotta pick at least 5 and no more than 20. You don't even need to pick a single college game for the entire season, or you could do the same with the NFL. But I think a minimum and max pick # is necessary.

edit- I just edited the rule so it's explained a bit better. Good question. The only exception will be this 1st week of the college season.

And you've raised another question in my mind- Because the NFL season extends longer than the NCAA, should we drop the minimum to three for those last few weeks of the NFL season when there's no college games going on? I think forcing people to pick a third of the games is asking too much and will kinda water down the competition.

Tell me what you guys think.

Yeah, and we all know why you chose not to sign up this year.....
It's obvious you won't have enough time to pick games when you've got to perpetually service each and every one of the 5 beasts living right next door to your new place. I don't think anybody can fault you for going where the big money's at though.

As for d-unit's (who I wish would sign up, as I think he'd bring tremendous life to the party cave) comment, you'd think that at least half of us would finish right at 50% or above. Considering that a 3 year-old could point to 5 games each week and by the end of the season, would likely be right at around 50%. Just like if you flip a coin a few hundred times. You'll go on streaks of heads and tails, but in the long run it should even out to where you've flipped both Abe's face and the Capitol roughly the same amount of times. There's no vig here. Only vag. And plenty of it, if ya know what I mean boys. If you don't finish with at least a .500 record, then you really shouldn't be picking games at all until you rethink your strategolutionary wagering tactics.

K. We'll have to draw the line somewhere though when it comes to missing weeks. The rules have yet to be solidified, but I'll suggest to everyone that knows in advance that they'll miss a week to just pick 5 games before the spreads come out. Post it and PM me to let me know. Predicting spreads is pretty easy once the season gets rolling.

-If anybody has any opinions or suggestions regarding the rules, please speak now. They are still pliable. I just want to have the best competition we can without making it too much of a hassle for anyone.

I was just thinking about that. They've been out for quite awhile on betcris, but still aren't out on bodog. I want to use the same book for the entire year. I was waiting to see if anybody had any input on the rules too. I think I'll review them here in a minute and see if I spot anything that needs changing or added. But yeah, I'm thinking I'll post them here in the next day or two. I just wanted to allow enough time to make sure they were pretty accurate. I don't think they'll change too much over the next week though, so we're probably good to go. Do you have any preferences as to which book we use? I'm thinking cris. They've always seemed to be on top of things and I think other books refer to them as well. I can tell you one thing- I've got my Ducks covering the 14.5 in the opener! haha.

Yeah, once they're posted, they're what we're using. I guess I jumped the gun a bit. But I knew I wouldn't be around for the past few days, so I decided to post 'em. I guess I could edit them up until anybody posts their picks, but meh. I don't think they'll change significantly in the next week. From here on out, they'll be posted as soon as I get the chance. Preferably by wednesday at the latest. But never this early, obviously. Just to let everybody know, I'll be running at about a 67% clip this year. So uh, good luck keeping up. haha. And unless any of the powers that be have any issues with it, there will be a $20 prize for the winner. I find that all competitions only benefit from at least a small incentive. And to be quite frank, I don't expect to be purchasing any $20 money orders come february. So bring it, suckas. Prove me wrong. Sign up if you haven't, and stay scared if you won't.

Ok everybody, here we go. There are 47 college football games listed here. You are required to make no less than 5 picks and no more than 20. The lines were taken from betcris.com. This will be the book that is used throughout our entire competition. All times listed are PST. I intended to use Eastern, but I copied and pasted all this one by one and didn't realize it was Pacific until just now. This was a pain in the ass and I'm not changing it. For those who would like to participate, but have yet to sign up, you can still do so up until the last minute. That minute would be at 8pm EST September 1st.

If you have any questions, please refer to the rules located in the original post of this thread before asking it here or pm'ing me. Please limit your picks to one post, and DO NOT EDIT YOUR PICK POST. If you do, it will be invalidated and you will be penalized 2 wins and your bye week will be used. If you make a mistake, leave the post up and make another below it indicating what happened. Once I see this I'll pm you and you will be able to edit that first post. This is how edits will be done in this thread. This rule is being put into place to prevent people from deleting picks at a time when they still have at least 5 picks left to be played. I can't keep constant track of everybody's picks so this rule is needed to eliminate any temptation to cheat. Not that I think anybody would do that, but solid rules always make things easier for everybody. If you get caught cheating, you'll be eliminated.

Is that the valid way of picking?
Yes, it appears as though that is the chosen way. KCJ58 is quite the trend setter. I'd prefer that everybody use the same method, but I wouldn't penalize anybody who makes their picks in any clear way they chose. I've usually just wrote the team I'm picking with the -5 or +5 next to them, but this works just fine. I actually think I prefer it this way for what we're doing. Makes it easier for everybody to criticize each others picks if they choose to do so. Just to make things clear for everybody, it's the bolded teams that are the picks. If anybody uses italics, then those would be the picks. I know this is obvious, but I don't want anybody acting all dumb when they go 0-5. "but, but, I meant to pick the teams with the plain font! I bolded the other ones to highlight how crappy they were!"

Yeah, I was thinking about that. I initially though it wouldn't work to make multiple pick posts, but as long as everybody is clear on the NO EDITING rule, then I have no problem with that. I've got 8 picks so far, and none of them are tonight. There's 2 that I'm waffling on right now as to whether I should pick. I don't think I'd put money on them, but it would be more fun to watch the games if I had some vested interest in them. Which will likely be my downfall in this competition.

Yeah, it was pretty routine for LSU to score 40+ while holding opponents to 0-20 last year against teams like MSU. And in my opinion, they've made an upgrade at QB.

I have my three team teaser in play tonight. Buffalo +42, LSU -8.5, and Oregon St. +3.5.

As much as I hope Rutgers is great this year, I can't see them beating any team by more than 6 TDs. No matter how bad Buffalo is.

The LSU thing did worry me a bit. I picked them in this but I probably wouldn't wager it for real. But I feel confident knocking the spread down by 10 points.

Just as I suspected, the line has moved. It's 18 now. I suspect it'll be up around 18.5 or maybe even 19 by kickoff. But we're sticking with the 17.5 posted. I'm having a tough time finding a reason not to pick this game. MSU appears to be quite the feeb.

I dont think I am betting the game. I love Notre Dame and dont have a problem betting my favorite team. But im not agreeing with Herbstreit or Holts when they are saying they are going to have 9 or 10 wins. I think they might have 3 wins the whole season.

I'm confident. I think they can be 9-3 with a little luck. Definitely 8-4. The schedule isn't really all that hard, and I think UCLA is majorly overrated, although that game is away. The team will definitely be a lot faster and more athletic this year and its about time.

The game was sitting at -3 for a while, and I wasn't going to touch it. Once it dropped to -2.5 I jumped on it. It is amazing what one little half point can do to me.

Maybe I'm higher on GT than I should be, but I had them down as one of my favorite picks this week. Love that defense and I think they actually made a big upgrade in the passing game despite the loss of CJ. The loss of Ball and resulting addition of a QB counterweights that tenfold imo. Looks like me and Jugs are going head to head week 1!

damn I wanted to pick the OSU-Utah game bad but I kept waffling. I think OSU covers but at the same time I expect big things from Brian Johnson. If Stroughter were playing I probably would have went with the Beavers. Not sure they'll rack up the points while rotating young QB's and missing their top WR. Bernard should be big behind that line but I see it being a close game with Utah's air game providing a high probability of garbage points if the Beavers do manage to build a solid lead.

I think that's risky as hell. I'd choose one or the other. You'd be giving yourself a pretty small window there. I'd take the money you'd put on the over and just double what you're putting on SC. It'd be terrible if they win 63-3. But it sounds like you're just going with SC so I guess there's no need to say it. I'm just sayin

Haha. You're so superstitious. Like Vegas told Pete Carrol to win exactly 55-0 or else. You're probably right though, if SC covers and shuts out Idaho like I think they will, then the under is likely. I think your 55-0 prediction sounds pretty accurate. I just wouldn't try to squeeze myself through that window with both bets. It's rare that I pick both the points and the game at the same time though. I hate when they cancel each other out like that and Vegas drinks my juice.

No, the winner will be whoever has the best overall win% in the end. Ties have no effect on that. Pushes don't count with the books, so they don't count here. I know, it sucks when you push. But that's just how it is. I pushed a game too. Trying to remember....oh yeah, it was punk ass UNLV. Let's just be glad we didn't get losses.

Nice. Yeah, if you think it won't be too ******** looking. I was just reading up on a print screen tutorial and I still can't figure it out. Something about a hidden clipboard and blah blah blah. I can't find the damn clipboard. Is it possible to put them all in one post? If not, just try to post them back to back so nobody's posts clutter the in-between. Thanks a lot for doing it. I've always seemed to do best with College Basketball for those same reasons. I don't even mess with the NBA.

College football definitely for me. Week 1 is always the hardest in college football. The favorites went 30-15. I dont like betting favorites that much thats why I did so poor in week 1. It seems to me that favorites always win in week 1 so they reel in all the suckers. Ill be making a comeback. Im not worried.

You're such a conspiracy theorist (and for good reason.) I always thought week 1 was easier in some respects because sometimes I feel as though my preseason opinion of some teams is a bit more accurate than that of Vegas or the masses. But that's a two way street. The thing that sucks I think is all those top-tier programs who open the season against the Idaho's and App St's. I can rarely mess with those. But I hear what you're saying. There's definitely parts about week 1 that make it more difficult. I'm just saying there's often some hidden gems that won't be found later in the year. And I agree about riding the 'dogs. The first thing I do when I scan the spreads is to look for any 'dogs that are blatantly getting too many points.

I look for who the betting public will all bet and I take the opposite. For example Washington +3 AT HOME vs Boise is a must for me. Home dogs are my $hit.

Hell yeah. That's actually a smart way to do things in life in general imo. Look at what all the sheep are doing and turn around and do the exact opposite and you'll be much better off.

I hope to continue throughout the season as #1. Ryan do you remember who won our college basketball betting thing that involved like 5 of us?

Haha no it was a serious question. I didn't remember what the final standings were but I think we were all close. It was fun so I'm glad Duckseason put this together for the real betting season.

I'm sure we will. I think we started like halfway through college anyway. This year we can make it more official.

I can still find the thread, I almost brought it back before duckseason made this up.
I know that I finished 20-13, which is just over 60%. I made some really bad small conference tourney plays, but I was the only one to pick Florida in the championship game.

Florida covering that game cost me a $hit load of money.

I'd like to ask everybody to please use the name of the NFL teams you're picking as opposed to just the city. If the Bengals and Bearcats have the same spread one week there could be controversy.

Cant believe your going against my squad on opening night. That place is going to be nuts with the raising of the Super Bowl banner. Remember its week 1 in NFL so they are going to reel you in just like they reeled in the college people last week.

Thank you for your concern. But "they" have never reeled me in. I just call 'em how I seem 'em. Call me a sucker the week I go 4-7. There's no doubt in my mind that N.O. will score on you guys in a variety of ways. And the losses of Booger and Tarik were pretty big factors that I just couldn't ignore. Those were two of the most important players not named Peyton for you guys last year. And your corners still have something to prove to me, although I do like Jackson. I actually think the Saints have a real good shot at winning this game. And anytime I'm thinking that and getting 6, sign me up. Even if the Colts are up by 13 in the 4th, I have a hard time believing they'll prevent Brees from chalking up some garbage. I feel pretty confident about this one. Not as confident as GT last week, but confident nonetheless. By no means do I consider it a lock, but those are quite rare in the NFL from where I sit. I don't consider making solid picks to be biting on anyones line. I'm definitely nobody's puppet, and I definitely am fully aware of what I'm doing when I make a pick. But again, thank you for your concern buddy! I'm assuming you're taking your Colts? I know I'm going head to head with jughead again this week. Should be an exciting game win or lose. Don't think the thought of Peyton putting up 40+ hasn't crossed my mind.

I think the Saints are in for a worse season than last. The defense played way over their head last year and I don't think it will be better, in fact it will probably be worse. They won't be able to stop the run like they did last season and their secdonary leaves room for improvement. I think the Colts will easily run and obviously pass all over this team. As for the Saints offense, I think we see a heavy amount of Duece tonight. Out of all teams, Reggie Bush just doesn't match up well with the speedy but undersized Colts. If anything I think the smart thing would be ball control with Duece to keep the ball out of Peyton's hands. We'll see if that happens though. It's an interesting matchup either way and I'm just glad the seasons is starting.

Crap, I just noticed this, sucks for me. I was 2-1-1 last week. WVA and Nebraska were my winners, Texas lost, and Colorado pushed. Have WVA, Cal, UCLA, and Boise in college, and the Steelers and Seahawks in the NFL.

Yeah, I think there are definite questions regarding the Saints D as well. I just don't think their weaknesses are nearly as pronounced as those of the Colts. Really, there's no more reason to believe the Saints D will be worse than there is to think they'll be better. Can't say that about the Colts right now, imo. But yeah, none of us truly know how the game will go. I agree it would be wise to ride Deuce and try to get Reggie the ball through the air. There's a lot of skill players to talk about in this match up, but I think the real story will be written in the trenches. Freeney v Brown and Smith v Ugoh will be especially interesting. I dunno, the more I've thought about this game the more I lean Saints. But I can see why others would pick the Colts. And I agree, I'm just glad the season's starting. I won't come in here and talk trash if the Saints win. It's just a pick.

Well if you still want to play, you're more than welcome to. Hate to have to give you that 1 win penalty but it's in the rules. If those are your 5 picks for this week, then just post them in bold with the spread next to them. You can make more picks later if you want. Just refer to the rules. There's really no reason to penalize you for arriving late, as that's not why the rule is there, but I guess a rule is a rule. If the others are ok with it, then I'll waive it. But that might be a big if. What do you guys think? RL, Jughead?

I don't care. Just make him 0-0 for the first week and penalize the 1 win thing from here on out if you miss a week.
