how are the functions? what do you play it on?

i play on 360, it is just very smooth now. there is actually gang tackling, where you run into a defender, its literally like running into a brick wall there is a hesitation and the defenders gang up on you n knock you backwards. other cool features

full 32 team franchise mode with new stadium, ticket/concession sales all of the stuff from the ps2 version in owner mode

new player icons including:
spectacular catch reciever
finese/power move dlinemen
lock down corners
smart defender, where they can determine the routes of recievers (smart dbacks) routes of everything but recievers (linebackers) and all routes of the whole field (safties)
also smart quarterback works the same way, except obviously vice versa.

in superstar, you can make ur own player like last year, or u can also pick a rookie in the league right now n control him.

i havent really had the oppurtunity to play around with it much, so i might not be able to answer all of ur questions till i really get into it, but ill be the best help i can be. i hope you got a next gen system addict, cuz my friends are telling me that basically its just a roster update for the ps2/xbox.

interesting note, i made a one handed catch with cj today where kitna threw the ball out of bounds and cj used his 96-97 jump and snagged it in with one hand n ran 60 yards uncontested for a touchdown. :)

haha thats awesome, probably so far my only disappointment would be the play calling is the same where you can ask madden, by play type, or by key player, but the set up is a lil different so it is taken me some time to get used to, of course i only have played 2 games. another disappointment is johnny baldwin is not in the game, i would love to have played with him in preseason, may get fixed with the roster update tho. and bullocks and alexander are both fs, so we got our favorite hard hitter kennedy as the starting ss

i was in ur same shoes, i considered robbing a bank to get my 360, i actually took out a loan n got one n a laptop, finally got that paid off *exhale* but hopefully ull get one soon enough n everything will be all good, cuz ive heard the ps2 is just basically a roster update, no player icons, nothing new for the most part unfortanetly

it's Millen's ass you want. Besides, you'd get lost if you get too close to Madden's ass, seriously have you seen the sheer size of the thing?

I was hoping for a thread about Madden 08... although the game looks good, I've got some bitching to do (of course).

First of all, whatthefuck is up with the ratings?!

Stanton is rated at 73 and, while I feel it's a bit low (76 seems more reasonable), I can live with it. But, 68 speed!? Are you KIDDING!? Way off. His mobility was one of his strengths at MSU. 74 sounds reasonable... but not 68.

Next, IAF. I'm really high on this kid... a hard worker and "Marinelli-guy" with a motor and a love for football. He was also drafted in the 2nd round... but was given a rating of 68. 68?! For a second round pick with loads of talent? Whatever. I was thinking that 74 would be more appropriate.

And, speaking of 74, that was the rating they gave Manuel Ramirez. I like this kid too, but rating him higher than Stanton AND IAF is a bit much.

Also, Tatum Bell was given a rating of 82... after being an 86 last year. What didn't he do right? Hit over 1,000 yards last year and that, somehow, makes him worse? Or, is it because he came to the Lions? 82 is low.

Redding was given 86, which is a big (and much needed) improvement from last years mid-70 rating. Pretty fair.

Now, my next complaint: the gameplay. The graphics look GREAT, but the gameplay needs some work. Too many times have I run into a pile, pushed spin and moved THROUGH players to break a run. Come on. I can't think of the rest, but there are a few more.

Note: when I play online with the Lions, as I do, I've discovered that moving the defense to a 3-4 works great. I move Redding to RE, Sims to MLB, Bullocks to SS and Alexander to FS... which leaves me with this setup:

LE - White
DT - Rogers
RE - Redding

LOLB - Bailey (87 speed?)
MLB - Sims (84 speed)
MLB - Lenon (79 speed)
ROLB - Lewis (85 speed)

CB - Bryant
FS - Alexander (90 speed)
SS - Bullocks (87 speed)
CB - Wilson

For some reason, other players have a hard time with it. Also, moving Furrey to TE creates some huge mismatches.

I've said enough... just a few thoughts.

there is bitching to be done every year. From what I gather the lower ratings do in fact help the game (not everyone is superman anymore) and well if the lions got screwed there's always the option to add a few points in the ratings departement.

How are the other rooks rated?

alexander is a 72 i believe? aj davis is something like a 65 or something like that i dont have the ratings memorized but i believe thats it for the rookies on the team. ive started a franchise with the lions n im now in week 9, kenoy kennedy is leadin the league in tackles, lenon is like third, sims is up there and so is bullocks. i play on all madden, and i am surprised at how many times the cp runs, i like it alot, allows for more tackles. i'd be lucky to get 5 a game with sims but now he is averaging close to 9 or 10 which is more reasonable. i also made a couple of trades to help out my team. i traded for ted ginn and steve breaston to help the return game, i gave up mike furrey who has 2 return touchdowns wtf!!!? i also traded tatum bell cuz he fumbles too much for my liking i traded him for a 1st round pick sf 0-8 so far lets go number one pick! i plan on drafting a tightend or a defensive end, i also got anthony spencer as an end but im pissed because you still cannot edit positions!

lol that's next-gen for ya. They'll probably update that though.

it still amazes me how much the 49ers are underrated in Madden.

one glitch i did find earlier today was a timeout glitch. the clock was running down in the first half, and kevin jones got injured twice, using two of my timeouts. duckett later got injured and used my third. (both returned later). im driving the ball up the field and i hit cj on a slant. i was curious so i called a timeout and low and behold, i had three left, after the announcer said "the offense calls a timeout on the field due to an injured player three times!!"

that's a tiny little mistake.

Question! In franchise mode, did they fix the combine results? They were a bit funny in '07

I just had an epic game on my Lions franchise.

I was getting bored with this Kitna guy as my QB. It was week five and I decided to make a change. I was also fed up with Kalimba starting. So I start looking through the teams for a DE and a team to trade Kitna to.

I come across the Tampa Bay Bucs. I always thought that SImeon Rice should be on this years roster so I decided to work a deal involving him and Kitna. Hes rated a 91 in game and teh injuries arent really a problem in the virtual world. I trade Kitna and a draft pick for Rice.

I didn't even notice that the next team I play is the Tampa Bay. Garcia is injured and Kitna is their starter. So Rice and Kitna playing against teams that just traded them.

Stanton has three interceptions. I'm down 24-7 in the third. With a few turnovers I come back and win 30.-24.

I thought it was an interesting little part of my franchise.

A "short story" about my Lions franchise (360, '08).

Season 1:
Whenever I grab the Lions and start a franchise, I do two things: sim the first year (they went 8-8, made the playoffs and beat the 11-5 Seahawks in round 1... holy ****) and, in the offseason, trade Shaun Rogers for Jonathan Vilma. Vilma and Sims? Just not fair.

Then, I wheel-and-deal before/during the draft (much like Millen, but with greater success... joke). Kennedy is gone, Woody has a new team, Bryant (who had a good year) was moved and KJones is holding the ball elsewhere. I also consider trading Kitna... if the price is right. Overall, I get the #3 pick, another pick in the 15-20 range and Brodrick Bunkley (DT, Eagles, 83). Kitna stays.

So, with the #3 pick, I grab the top QB on the board... Molden. Molden? 4.55 40 yard dash and great power/accuracy. Nice.

Then, I trade (again) up to pick 11 (with my 15-20 pick) and grab the top pass-rusher on the board... Bronson. A tower (6-7, 310) with great speed and quickness. (Involved in the trade: White, who made it to the pro bowl.) I, like Marinelli, am still hoping that Edwards, with that speed, will do SOMETHING for us next year.

With my actual pick, at 20, I trade down to 28 and grab Chris Chester (OG, Ravens, 82) in the process. At 28, I take the best CB on the board, Frazier, who happened to fall from mid 1st round to 28. Nice. Great speed and tackling.

In the 2nd round, I moved back up and grabed a fast-as-hell SS, Irving. Not a great tackler, but he patrols the field with his hammer and his 92 speed. I'll take it. (Note: Bullocks hits 85 after a solid season.)

The rest of the draft is grabbing OLinemen, a RB/KR specialist, a solid OLB in the 5th round and a fast WR. With Vilma and Sims already in place, you'd think ANYONE could fill that last spot.

Draft results: Molden - 86, Bronson - 78, Frazier - 80, Irving - 76... and a 99 KRer with 93 speed. Notabadday. The LBer, Stallings, will compete with Lewis and Baldwin for that last spot. In the end, he gets the job.

Season 2:
The defense is pretty friggin young and has some question marks. Bullocks and Irving? Lets hope the kid learns quickly. Stallings? Just hit anyone who comes remotely close to you... the Silms corporation will do the rest. And, that DLine... Bronson, Redding, Bunkley and Edwards... talent and speed but lacks sheer power. Then there's the offense...

Stacked. Sure, it's just Dell and Buckett in the backfield, but I'm big on Dell and Buckett is a great COP. Chester, somehow, moves up to 85 in the offseason and the line looks... well... OK. The rest: beautiful. Of course, we've still got CJesus (miss saying that) and Ol' Roy... and the "Jon Kitna Mentoring Program" is open for business. Things are looking up.

I sim season #2. Although they finish 7-9, they still win the division (Bears - 6-10) and face the Seahawks. And again, the 7-9 Lions upset the 12-4 Seahawks, 40 something to 30 something. I guess we've just got their number. We get smoked in the second game, but still made it to (and advanced in) the playoffs. Now, my favorite part of Madden: the offseason.

First things first: Kitna needs a new home. He's still rated 83, so trading him isn't difficult. I pair him up with Edwards and my 1st round pick (somewhere around 20) and move up to pick #4.

I also decide to grab an OT in FA (which I rarely do)... which makes Foster expendable. That'll come into play later.

The focus of this draft? Solidify the RB position. Get a stud. With pick #4, I grab the top RB in the draft, Sam Kennison. Elusive, powerful and fast... perfect fit. Him, CJ, Roy and Molden? I'll take it.

Trading Edwards leaves the RE position open... which, of course, leads to a trade. George Foster, Orlovsky and Duckett are sent for a late first, and that pick is spent on another pass-rushing tower, Richart (6-7, 290). (Note: Bronson made the pro bowl as a rookie with 12 sacks... and moved up to an 84.) Lets see what this duo can do.

The next focus: TE. I traded Boss Bailey, Lenon (80) and a 4th for a mid 2nd round pick and snagged an offensive stud. Good 40 time with average size and great hands... that'll fit nicely with Ol' Roy and CJ.

I took a solid OT with my next second round pick, a CB with my third and a OLBer with a 4.43 40 yard dash in the fourth (traded back up)... then spent the rest of the picks on the OL (a few extra 5ths).

The result: a RB, 82 overall, with 93 speed, high elusiveness, great stiff arm and crazy trucking. Position battle? Not really. He'll start over Bell (also 82). Also filled the hole at RE, grabbed a stud TE (88 speed, 80 catching) and got an interesting talent at OLB (also 88 speed... intriguing). Although Stallings had a solid year, this one might be the starter.

So, just a few notes about my franchise. I'll probably play a few games, then sim to next season (love drafting)... we'll see. If Molden progresses (currently at 90) and injuries stay away, we might have a shot.

Gotta love dreaming about the playoffs...

thanks, I'll pass you the rep too then ;).

ummm well yeah, I've been a total Madden nut for two years now and the past ten months I've played '07 almost non-stop (gf went abroad) so I guess I do kinda know a few things.

I don't have a copy of '08 yet since I'm not from the States I have to wait for the European release date, which is the 31st (it's pre-ordered, five weeks ago :P). Probably shut down for a week and just play. I already feel for my family and friends :D.

I could tell you what I did last year, which was kinda fun.

First off let me explain that this was my third straight Lions franchise, the previous two I had to shut down because I couldn't go under the cap unless I fired about half my team. The challenge of my Third Reich (as I lovingly refer to my franchise) was to get the best possible team with maximum cap space and maximum result. Tough, but very doable if you accept that Madden is, in fact, a game and that it has flaws that can be exploited in major (and funny) ways. The idea was to go 19-0 with a minimum of 100 mln. dollar cap space by year 5.

I - first thing I always do with any team is sign a few free agents, preferebly Ty Law, Jamie Sharper and another OLB who'se name I forgot. Next step is go to preseason, don't annoy yourself with the training camp. Then edit Sharper's position from OLB (91 ovr) to DE (98 ovr) and trade him to either the Browns or the 49ers, you should be able to get at least a first and second round pick (they practically hand out picks the first 6 weeks of the season) and trade Ty Law to the 49ers or Browns as well. Why? well here's a few nice reasons
- Law and Sharper are old and expensive, won't improve you team much and play positions that you can fill pretty well.
- picks > aging veterans
- 49ers and Browns SUCK in madden, you'll end up with (at least) two top 10 picks

I don't bother playing any games, I just sim all the way to week six. If the lions do well (they usually do) I check what team is sucking (usually the Bucs or Titans), go to the trade screen, trade the following.
Lions 1st + 7th + 6th round pick -> crappy teams' 1st and 3rd round picks
Lions 2nd + 5th round pick -> other crappy teams 2nd and 4th.

after taht I sim the rest of the season, praying nobody ends up with career ending injuies. Then sign a new DC and STC, and get a new health team, since the current bites. I Go to FA with:
3 high 1st round picks,
3 high 2nd round picks,
2 high 3rd round picks,
2 high 4th round picks,

If I feel this is good, I go to the draft, if I don't (meaning: if the lions REALLY sucked): I sign some high-rated free agents (don't forget OLBs make awesome DE's) and I trade in some picks (note: don't forget to give them the 2nd day picks otherwise you'll frustrate yourself by having Madden tell you 10=max picks).

Whatever. I draft whatever looks good, but keep in mind!

strong OLB's are fantastic DB's (just train on acc and they're fast and strong)
SS make pretty strong, lightening fast OLB's (97 spd/71 str linebacker, BOO-YAH!)
any WR with speed lower than 4.35 aren't worth looking at.
OLBs are faster than MLBs, so if possible draft OLB to play OLB.
(note: yes, I draft huge loads of OLB's, first draft about 5 or 6, if the class is good)

Now I like my guys fast so I don't look at RB's with less than 4.35 are not interesting. The only position where speed is irrelevant to me is QB, since I want them to throw, not run.

after that I sign them to irrrelevant contracts, they're all gonna get cut in the preseason anyway.

After the season, before I do camp, I cut all my rookies (and, if I have any) newly acquired free agents. Change their positions to where they suck and re-sign them to 7-year, crappy contracts (they won't complain about their paycheck until there's two years left anyway). If I didn't do it yet I do the same with every person I consider overpayed on the team.

Oh I don't need to cut everyone, to keep morale up: I sign a dumbass who plays the positon of your veteran out of FA, then (depth!) then it's a simple matter of changing the guy I want re-signed's position and hit re-sign. He won't ask for much now!
(note: works only with players who aren't paid big money, like Roy Williams, Jeff Backus (in '07) and Kevin Jones, high-payed players will still ask lots of $).

Gotta go, pick up the GF! Will post season two next.

(note: cap at this point... 55-65 mln.)

I forgot to mention that I don't ever draft DT's either, strong DE's (32 bench presses or more) make better DT's, since their speed is better and they'll be nasty pass rushers. This process works my proof is my current DT tandem.
DT1: 86 spd/99 str/91 acc/99 tckl ..... avg sacks a year: 15
DT2: 77 spd/98 str/96 scc/89 tckl ..... avg sacks a year: 11
this is after 12 seasons, practice makes perfect ;)

needless to say both make the pro bowl any year and no team runs or passes against me.

allright. Time for season two. This really is a repetition of season one, just a few things to be done differently.

Just in case you were wondering: my girlfriend is here and I had awesome spaghetti with my mom's homemade sauce.. mmmm goodness.

So, after I re-sign all rooks & vets time for training camp. Now I forgot to mention I usually get Rackers (K) and Sauerbrun (P) in the offseason. Since they're both fine players no need to do the special team excersizes. What I usually do is focus on my rooks and young players, since my veterans are either very good or quickly becoming absolete. Now my draft strategy gives me players with very good physical skills but no positional skill worth mentioning.

now my golden rules for training camp are:

Young QB (future starter or starter) does the precision passing drill to raise his throw power (throw accuracy and awareness improve as he gets more playig time anyways)

Newly drafted OLB (former SS) will do the tackling drill, since safety's don't tackle very well and OLB's should be able to take a guy down, the great thing is I don't need to worry about his cover skills, ever.

Rookie O-lineman or DE (former OLB) will do the trench fight excersize, DE gets more strength or if needed acceleration, and o-line always a boots in RUN block, don't do pass, that will improve on itself.

WR and RB drills are easy, but if the guys are fine (that is 99 ovr) I just have them do each other's excersize to improve the YAC ability of recievers and the versatility of my back + backs with high acceleration get 200 yards extra every season.

Swat ball... well I just get a quick CB or Safety or whatever to do it, can't hurt.

So season time. Now the great thing is this season doens't really matter so I usually play one game against the Packers or the Bears (pushing up the prestige factor a bit) and then sim.

Again, I screw other teams over by trading in their first day picks for mine, with a profit.

No the SB since I get eliminated in the divisional (wasn't feeling like playing). Crappy though, the TEXANS (what the ....?) play the sb. Not important, but still, the texans? well offseason time.

Finally I'll get to do something in the owner mode, that is raise the prizes, mock teams that didn't do as well as me and keep the ford field state of the art (hey, I like my stuff modern!) and get rid of Marinelli (I don't like his playbook) I sign Johnson (the eagles D guy) since he's a motivated guy and he brings the Eagles playbook with him, which is by far the coolest.

The offseason is a lot of simming, signing popular free agents, trading them for picks and deciding which players are to be traded. Usually, by now I can trade away Bly, Kitna and Lehman (who is worth a lot more as a DE). After getting that I usually have 3 or 4 first round picks. Nice.

OH this is also when I make Kenoy Kennedy suck by making him a CB and cutting him. Hilarious, I kid you not.

Soooo the draft the draft.

Now I forgot to mention what I drafted (I had to search, since this is a running franchise) Last year I drafted

QB (unspectacular speed, big arm, beat Kitna after the preseason) he was an 86 when I drafted him...
WR (sick physical skills, speed demon, crap awareness, but growning) he was a 84 when drafted.
OLB (88 spd, 84 str, 94 acc, 99 ovr) he's a DE now, don't remember what I drafted him at.
CB (fast, but can't jump yet) think he was an 81
SS (fast and strong (77) and tackles well, not rated high cause he didn't cover well (bad catch and jump stat) he's a perfect OLB, xcept for his tackling stat, but it's already at 88 now
OLB (79spd/77str) he was a better DE than Hall or Redding (who still played DE) but... I'll trade him next year if possible.

had some other picks but they didn't really do well, so not worth mentioning.

So I have 4 first round picks (3rd, 8th, 14th, 21st) feel I could've gotten more but really didn't wanna spend more time trading so this will have to do.

round/pick position(explanation)
1/3 LT nobody at RT now, so Backus will move and this kid (85 rookie) will start at LT.
1/8 DE (84 speed and 91 strenght as a rook, he'll be my starting DT)
1/14 RB (98 speed, bye bye K. Jones he's an 82 rookie but he'll dominate)

this is where I'm excited, my RB of the future is there, I trade Kevin Jones for the 18th overall pick (well Kevin Jones and a 3rd) on with my draft

1/18 OG I need a guard since Rex Tucker's picture annoys me, this kid's amazing, 87 overall, high run block and good athleticism...

1/21 SS I forgot I kicked Kennedy off the team so I need a guy to start. I was afraid of this pick since there wasn't any top-end talent left (he's noted as a late first, and there's still first rounders on the board, but I need someone at the position. Turns out to be a solid pick, he's got everything and his awareness is the reason he's rated the way he is.

so far round one. 5 more picks to make. I'll browse you through
2nd round (4 picks)
OLB, K, CB, C
3rd round (1 pick)

wait, lemme explain this. I had more picks in round two, but I ended up trading up like my life depended on it and ended up losing one third round pick (the K. Jones trade for the 18th pick). SO!

I drafted a punter, who sucked, pity.

after that, same routine as the first season, cut the rooks and new free agents, change position, sign crap contract, usually I try to get some aging vets lower contracts, but they'll be gone soon enough, so I don't always bother to do so.

Then it's training camp time.

Don't worry, Kenoy Kennedy is already a very crappy Running Back nobody will ever sign.

And the 49ers traded Patrick Willis to me for a second round pick and... some dude I got in free agency.

Does anyone else think Kitna plays WAY worse than his rating of 83 should allow?

I have thrown 28 interceptions in 13 games with him so far, compared to just 12 touchdowns?

I do fine with other QB's I play as, even ones of comparable ratings. It's just Kitna, lol.

All of them, to go along with 44 fumbles, 97 sacks, and 113 Penalties for intentional grounding . . . hmm, we may have stumbled upon something . . .

What it is... is a stat that isn't listed, but exists: decision making. His is LOOOOW, while most other QBs (including ones that suck) are average to high.

They wanted to make the game as realistic as possible.

(Note to Addict: I just signed Kenoy Kennedy [the RB] to a 6 year deal... MAN he's amazing! He actually tackles other people when he's running the ball...)

BS. the only thing RB Kennedy takes down is himself.

I'd love to counter that post with an explanation of how awesome CJ81 is, but... I've had some bad experiences.

He seems to drop WAAAAY TOOO MANY passes for me online. Wiiiide open, down the field, catch-it-for-6 type plays, and CJ just lets it fall through his hands. Just not realistic.

So, I switch him and Ol' Roy on the depth chart. I like throwing it to a posession-type receiver on the left and deep on the right. Works perfectly that way.

CJ81 is the man, though.
