Trotter has been cut by the Eagles for the second time. Post here to discuss the transaction and what Trotter meant to the Eagles and could have meant in 2007 and beyond.

I would like to thank trotter for opening game 2 years ago getting kicked out of the Falcons game before it started. Because I bet the Falcons, and they won the game outright when they were a 3 point dog. Trotters absence secured victory for the Falcons.

Well, we all know that Ryan dislikes McNabb and Andy Reid for a variety of issues. I do agree that if Trotter were in that game, they Eagles probably would have won, but the Falcons may have covered the spread.

I want to thank Trott for swallowing his pride, putting the past behind him, and returning to the team after his knee problems forced him out of Washington. He also turned down a richer offer from the Chiefs to return to the Eagles in the 2005 offseason. Trott in his prime was the absolute perfect MLB for the Jim Johnson defense. I will always remember Trott for his leadership and relentless drive for excellence.

I'm sad to see Trott go. He was the best run stuffing LB in the NFL for several seasons and like Bsaza said he remained in Philly despite better offers, so I will always respect Trotter.

I like Gaither a lot though, he's a lot quicker than Trotter, and is better in coverage. Our defensive scheme will have to change since Gaither is not the anchor that Trotter was, but he is more of a sideline-to-sideline defender than Trotter.

I will always remember him carrying out the Eagles flag every game. i will never forget when i met him and how nice he was to take a picture with me

Its tough to see him go, but lets see what Gaither can do. He was always one of the more fun Eagles guys, and he will be missed not only off of the feild but off as well.

I said after last season that 2007 was going to be Trotter's last year in Eagles green. We all knew about his knee issues. It is possible that he just couldn't bring it anymore and decided to retire. It is also a possibility that Trotter was going to get less PT, so he asked for his release. Either way, much respect for him.

I wonder who will pick him up, maybe a team lacking experience at the mlb spot.

Big Blue D is suggesting that he could go to a team running the 3-4. The extra LB's in those kinds of systems can help him be a run stuffer (his strength) while shielding him from coverage responsibilities.

The Browns

There are lots of 3-4 D's out there. Many of them have a need for run-stuffers. Pittsburgh, Miami, New England, the Jets, Arizona, San Diego, and Dallas all run that kind of system.

why did we release him him and Spikes were pretty good friends from my point of view and i was excited to see a revitalized Spikes and Trotter. Just imagine how much fun it would have been to see those two on the field together we should have kept him. Why Why Why?

If you can't do the job, you can't do the job. This is a business, and he wasn't performing. The team wasn't going to use him, so they're letting him go.

08-21-2007, 03:21 PM
i think that he may call it quits, if he does hopefully we'll bring him back as "badassador" 2 or something to do with the eagles.

08-21-2007, 03:23 PM
they probably thought that Gaither was doing good enough to take Trotters spot eventually during mid season, and they didnt want to have that problem, or the 2 arguing. And Gaither has better legs then trotter

08-21-2007, 03:28 PM
Based on what Reid said, it appeared that they gave Trotter all the chances possible to keep a roster spot, but he just wasn't there. The Eagles seem to think that he's cooked.

what will be interesting to see is how our defense changes because of Gaither starting in the middle. On the plus side he gives us a lot more range to the outside, an area that (while it improved last season), has been a tough spot for us as of late. However, he will not be able to stuff the run with the same ferocity and aptitude of Trotter. Our defense will likely be speedier defense, but we will rely on our safeties to come up and support the run more. So the way I see it panning out is slightly more responsibility for our safeties and slightly less for Gocong and Spikes.

I think there's a lot more meat up front on the DLine, and that will keep the LB's cleaner. By brining back Gocong as the SAM, and adding Spikes, there's plenty of bulk at LB. Gaither's not a small guy, he's just not a behemouth like Trotter. He can tackle and move, and I'm sure they think he can shed blocks well enough to make it happen.

I read in an article that Spikes will take over the MLB spot. Is this true or is he staying outside?

08-23-2007, 07:39 PM
Spikes can play almost every position, and Gaithers did play WLB, last year, so he has the most experince there. Though they would have done that switch in training camp. Instead of giving Spikes all those reps at WLB.

Spikes can play every position, but he plays best as a WILL. This allows him to do the things that he does best, make game-changing plays. Gaither played MIKE in college at Tennessee, and is capable of playing either WILL or MIKE for the Eagles. I think for now, Gaither is the MIKE, with Spikes as the WILL, and Gocong as the SAM. But I have a question no one but me has mentioned... Where does Gaither play after Spikes is no longer on the Eagles? I think he may move back to WILL, and Stewart Bradley will take over at MIKE. Bradley was just named the primary backup at both the SAM and MIKE positions. Bradley definitely has the size to play MIKE, but it remains to be seen whether he can do everything that is needed at the position, which I think he can do.

I thought Gaither had a good chance to beat out Trott, but I still thought the team would keep him around since he's such a lockerroom leader.

My favorite memory of Trott his him tearing up during the national anthem against the Vikings in the playoffs. I'm starting to tear up just thinking about it! I love that man, and he will always be an Eagle.

09-07-2007, 06:05 AM
The team figured they would gice him a chance to start somewhere else. but they normally do that sort of thing.

after watching tonights game I can truely understand why the eagles decided to go with Gaither at MLB, that guy was all over the field tonight in pass coverage.
