What a monster. I think he is going to establish himself as a top5 MLB by the end of this season.

He was a beast. All over the place, blowing up plays and a forced fumble.

Edge was a beast in his own right though, wow. He seemed light years ahead of last year.

PS what part of the valley you in? I'm in chandler...

He did well, but he wasn't going against a great offensive mind or running back really.

Lets not anoint him as the next Ray Lewis just yet/

Maybe he missed a tackle or two, but he was having to fend off offensive linemen ALL game bc our d line got pretty abused. Many of the tackles he made today were so impressive bc he had to shed a guard to get them.

He'll be restricted without solid DL play in front of him (imagine him in SD), and it showed as on quite a few occasions I saw runs up the middle and Willis standing somewhere to the side after being driven away by a G, but he's clearly going to be a force at LB.

I love Patrick Willis.. I wanted him on the Lions.. we wound up getting some nobody named Calvin Johnson though..

But Patrick Willis is going to be a beast comparable to the likes of Ray Lewis!

If he's doing this good in a 3-4 already, just imagine if he got drafted into a 4-3 defense like Minnesota....

Nolan is doing better than I thought over there. He's making SF into an East Coast team.

And is it just me, or does Frank Gore look faster than last year?

Alright, I think you guys are blowing his performance out of proportion a bit. He was all over the field, but he did struggle at times getting off of blocks and missed a few tackles. Matt Leinart juked him on that long run, which allowed him to pick up about four extra yards. While it was an impressive debut, I didn't catch myself saying "This kid is going to be a top five LB" or "Wow, he could be the next Ray Lewis." It was a good start for a rookie, but he has a ways to go.

We already have a thread for this, it's called the week 1 overreaction thread.

I liked what I saw as well, he's a frontrunner for the DROY but it was one game against the freaking Cardinals.

Willis definitely had a strong game, but look how bad the Cards offense looked

Yes he definitely reminded me of a young Ray Lewis. Same number, same size, very similar intense playing styles, going non stop. It's the best comparison.

Guys, you should know by now that prospects are always (unless they suck) compared to established good or great players because of what they've shown so far in college and the pros combined with their potential. Nobody's gonna compare him to Victor Hobson or Paris Lenon so quit throwing a fit.

I agree with everything you said here. He would be an absolute beast in a 4-3 with those DTs in front of him.

Nolan is doing a terrific job with the Niners. They were talentless, and now all of a sudden they have playmakers like Gore, Davis, Clements, Harris and other solid players like Smith, Jackson, Jennings.

the 49ers are a VERY young team. Their offensive stars are all under 25 I think...

Gore definetly looked faster, but we have yet to see if he can finish off runs. If he had top end speed last year, he would have had so many TDs.

Nobody is comparing him to the GoAT, they are comparing him to one of the more over-rated by the media linebackers named Ray lewis. Whom I do dearly love since he played at Da U

I really wanted the Bills to draft him and I was so pissed when the 49ers took him at 11. But I wouldn't trade our first 2 picks for Willis. Marshawn and Posluszny are going to be beasts at RB and LB, respectively.

BTW, I thought that Willis had a pretty good game.

09-11-2007, 07:04 PM
Yes, I saw him make some very good plays last night. He really is looking to become a very good player at this point in time. However, let's not declare him a god until we have more evidence, and some improvement.

I am really glad to see that they were utilizing him on the blitz a couple times last night. He got real good penetration on one of his blitz's and was in the backfield before I knew what was going on.

It's really a shame he is in the 3-4 though. With his speed he could be flat out dominant in the 4-3. Right now he is still going through a position change or sorts, so I expect him to play even faster when the game slows down for him.

I am glad to see our defense really shut down the middle of the field though, coverage was the main question mark on him coming out of college and it didn't show last night, although he did bite on the one play action to Boldin in the end zone.

Not to mention the vicious hit that Matt Leinart will remember all season long.

Its kind of hard to over-rate the third best linebacker of all time behind of course Lambert and LT.
