A Change in the Lions' Management

March 4, 2008

By TIM E. COLLINS
NATIONAL FOOTBALL SOURCE WRITER

I guess the job wasn't secure after all.

A year after publicly stating that Detroit Lions President and CEO Matt Millen's job "isn't - and wasn't" in jeopardy, William Clay Ford, owner of the Detroit Lions, released the 4-time Super Bowl winner from the position.

"We would like the team to move in a different direction," Ford said. "Matt loves winning and has a strong passion for the game, and I wish him success in the future."

The move came as a breath of fresh air to many Detroit Lions fans, who have been demanding a change since the "Joey Harrington" - "Steve Mariucci" era.

"This needed to happen for the franchise to be successful." stated Ian Andrews, a Lions fan originating from Ontario, Canada. "Matt Millen made a few poor decisions, and the franchise has suffered from it. The sooner a change happened, the better... eh?"

It's rumored that three "internet bloggers" - Xiomera, Scotty D and TacticaLion - will replace Matt Millen as the Lions' President(s) and GM(s) for the 2008 season.

That being said...

Welcome to the Detroit Lions 2008 (mock) Offseason Thread!

As you may (or may not) know, Xiomera, Scotty D and myself (the "Three Headed Michigan Man") are representing the Detroit Lions for the NFLDC Forum Mock Offseason. This mock includes trades and the 2008 NFL Draft.

We'll update this thread with proposed/approved trades, draft selections and information from the mock. Please give input and make suggestions as desired.

First approved trade:

The Lions Give:
Fernando Bryant - CB
Boss Bailey - OLB

The Lions Get (from Jaguars):
Daryl Smith - OLB
Maurice Williams - OT
2008 4th Round Pick (used to acquire Brian Kelly)

This deal was a no-brainer for us: Fernando Bryant, although one of our best CBs, is getting older and has missed quite a few games with injuries. Boss Bailey, who also has an injury history, underperformed in his time in Detroit. He couldn't play the MLB position and doesn't seem to fit the SLB position of the Cover 2.

Daryl Smith was re-signed by the Jaguars to a 5 year deal in January of 07. He accumulated a total of 82 and 89 tackles in the 2005-2006 seasons, to go with 9 PD, 7 sacks, 2 FF and 2 INTs in the same period. He brings size and consistency to the LB group, and will assume the SLB position in the Cover 2.

Maurice Williams, a Michigan Native and UofM graduate, was a second round pick in the 2001 NFL draft. He slid to back-up RT when the Jags signed Tony Pashos, but is a solid player and gives us depth at the position. This also gives us position flexibility with George Foster (the coaches originally said that Foster could play either OG or OT).

nice trade. Now draft DeShaun Jackson.

Second approved trade:

The Lions Give:
Damien Woody - OG

The Lions Get (from Texans):
2008 4th Round Pick (used to acquire Shawn Springs)
2008 6th Round Pick

Woody almost didn't make the team last year. He has a lot of talent, but struggles with motivation, has an injury history and can't seem to control his weight. Adding Maurice Williams allows us to move George Foster to RG, allowing us to keep talent and depth (Peterman/Ramirez) at the position.

You guys have really telegraphed what you will choose with your picks from these trades, however. As you absolutely have to take a CB at #12 or #44 or hell maybe even both.

Are these trades after the season trades? Because if they are, unless the Lions tag Bailey they have no rights to him after the season. So in the draft which I assume is running on a post season basis, it makes that trade null and void.

The players are treated as if they're still with their current team. They didn't have a FA period, so it wouldn't be possible to make sense of expired contracts.

Third approved trade:

The Lions Give:
2nd Round Pick
6th Round Pick

The Lions Get (from Dolphins):
Jason Taylor - DE

Jason Taylor is an elite DE with at least 3 more years of productivity left. Bringing him to the roster does 3 things for the defense: gives them an elite pass-rushing force next to Redding, Rogers and White; allows Kalimba Edwards to slide into a situation role (a perfect role for him); and gives the Lions' young DEs an example to play behind and learn from.

The Lions' needed an elite pass-rusher, and one with this talent would not have been available with their 2nd round pick. When Taylor decides to end his career, Ikaika Alama-Francis will be ready to take over.

09-29-2007, 05:47 PM
Fourth Approved Trade:

The Lions Give:
4th Round Pick (18)

The Lions Get (from Redskins):
Shawn Springs - CB

Springs may be near the end of his career, but still has the talent, awareness and experience to make an impact and immediately improve the CB position. Springs also makes up for the loss of Bryant (an upgrade), and having a healthy Bullocks and a 2nd-year Alexander greatly improves what was one of the worst 2007 secondaries in the NFL.

TacticaLion
09-29-2007, 05:53 PM
Fifth Approved Trade:

The Lions Give:
4th Round Pick (15)

The Lions Get (from Bucs):
Brian Kelly - CB

Kelly, like Springs, is an older NFL CB... but has many years of experience in the Cover 2 and is a great upgrade. Teaming up with Springs, Alexander and Bullocks, this group forms a great Cover 2 secondary.

First Draft Selection Made:

With the 12th pick in the 2008 NFLDC Mock Draft, the Detroit Lions select:

Rey Maualuga, ILB, USC

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f67/jenleigh120402/NFLDCReyMaualuga.jpg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaaArtCHAvk)
(click picture)

Rey Maualuga, a Junior ILB at USC, is a fierce, hard hitting terror that will bring intensity and a sense of identity to a defense that has lacked it in recent years. Paired next to Daryl Smith and Ernie Sims, Maualuga helps form an incredible LB group and has the talent and ability to become Detroit's own Urlacher.

***UPDATE***
After watching the first half of the USC-Washington game, I want Maualuga more than ever. This kid is a BEAST! Not only can he hit hard as hell, and not only is he great in run support... but I watched him drop back into coverage play after play. And, when Locker scrambled up the middle, Maualuga was able to change directions, shift forward and make the tackle. I couldn't find the stats, but I swear he finished the half with 8 tackles.

Oh... and he has incredible closing speed.

A beast. I wish this offseason was real.

Not sure how much I like that trade. I don't mind getting rid of Lehman in the least, but I am not and never have been a fan of Matt Jones. He has great athletic ability, but for his career, he has one of the highest percentage of passes dropped in the league over that time. He just really doesn't have good hands at all, and IMO, in a 5 wide set, he'd end up as like the 5th WR. No kidding, I actually like McDonald more. It's really not a case of liking Teddy Lehman in any way, it's just that I don't like Matt Jones at all. But of course, I really can't question you guys too much.

Well... it appears that the league is now dead.

Our 3rd round pick was going to be used on the best CB available... and our remaining picks were going to be used on OLinemen, a KR/PR specialist, a safety, (maybe) a TE and a pass-rushing DE was a consideration. We could've also targeted an OLinemen with our 3rd round pick (depending on the board), but wanted young talent at the CB position.

With the poor play of George Foster, the OLine (still) looks weak. He'd be tried at OG, but could potentially be replaced by Manny Ramirez. Maurice Williams and Backus could also be switched (Backus should be on the right side), and JScott should move into the rotation.

I think the mock was a success for the Lions. The defense actually looks great, and the offense is... well... the offense. After everything I've said about Millen, we didn't make OLine a priority... which is probably the biggest flaw of the mock.

Leave us a line and let us know what you think (by either a letter grade and/or explanation)... we'd appreciate it.

I wouldn't have traded up unless there was someone I was specifically targeting.. You could've just traded Shaun Rogers for a single pick.. But staying at #7.. Chris Long, James Laurinaitis, Malcolm Jenkins, Calais Campbell, Vernon Gholston, Phil Loadholt, Ryan Clady ... Probably in that order.

There is always the option of moving back down. I just couldn't pass up the value I was getting. Shaun Rogers isn't getting a late 1st value, so when I got it, I took it. I'm being hypothetical here, but let's say the team at #12 wants to move up. I move back down and acquire their 2nd Round pick. Then, I essentially traded Rogers to move up 5 spots in the 1st Round and got an extra 2nd Round pick. Even if I can't trade down, the guy I get at #7 will be unquestionably better than the guy I got at #17.

I agree. Most players wouldn't get 1st round value, so the deal was worth it.

I'd look at how the draft unwinds and get a feel from the teams around 12-15. If there's a top-tier player available, I'd offer the pick to 'em. As you said, it would be like moving up a few spots for a 2nd in return.

I'd like to get a stud LB or a great CB with our 1st round pick. Corey Smith and Jared DeVries are having great years (or were), White is solid and IAF/5-0 is just going to get better. A wall on the opposite side of Sims would do wonders for our LB group.

I'd also consider shopping Roy Williams. CJ will eventually come into his own, Shaun McDonald is a great player and Furrey is outstanding in the slot. That's a great WR group. Roy also might become a contract situation at the end of next year... something to think about. If you can shop Roy, I'd look to get a solid player (CB, LB, DL) and picks in return. (Imagine trading Roy for a LBer and a 2nd and drafting a LBer... Thornton-Connor-Sims is sick.)

Those are my thoughts...

I traded Roy Williams to Tampa Bay for the #23 overall pick and CB Brian Kelly. I would've traded him straight up for #23, but he offered Kelly so I took it. I thought it was another excellent value. Even though Brian Kelly has declined over the past few years, he's better than guys like Keith Smith, Stanley Wilson, Travis Fisher, and Devonte Edwards. He's also a veteran who has played in the Tampa 2 his entire career. I currently have 4 draft picks in the first three rounds and I plan on targeting the following positions: OL, MLB, DL, and CB.

1st Round (#7 overall)
1st Round (#23 overall)
2nd Round (#49 overall)
3rd Round (#81 overall)

This trade isn't excellent value. We paid a top 10 pick for Roy and he is a proven player whereas the #23 pick is a long shot to ever be much more than a starter if he doesn't flop. Kelly is at the end of the line and nowhere near the player he was but as a throw in I guess it is all right. Maybe we get 1 year out of him.

Ehh.. You can't sign a guy that doesn't want to be there. It's been said that Roy wants to play closer to home. If that's true, he'll find a way to make that happen.

I like this trade. I wish Kelly was younger but, either way, he's an upgrade over what we have and is a veteran. Sure, we spent a top 10 pick on Roy... but that doesn't mean we'll get a top 10 pick in return. Also, a lot of great MLBers fall to mid-late round 1... a great spot to grab one.

So, essentially, we traded Roy (we don't really NEED him with CJ, McD and Furrey) and received a stud MLB and solid system CB. I'll take it.

At first, I thought we should've used a high pick on a CB (and I still do), but having Kelly makes me think we can draft a great DE or OT with our #7 pick. Options... and options are nice.

This mock is interesting... but the songs on page 2 are classic. Addict and ironman... well done.

Addict:
Beëlzebub's replaced by Rey...
He's the king of hell, okay?
He'll eat your baby's head
And leave your mom for dead
Forget Mephisto, Fear Maualugaaaaaaaaah

ironman:
Lucifer has gone away
He's replaced by Rey today
He'll crush your soul
He'll eat your heart
His dominance is a work of art
Forget Mephisto, Fear Maualugaaaaaaaaah

I think it's fitting to post this here (considering how outstanding Addict and ironman made this thread).

It's time for me to go - for good. Although I only try to voice my opinions about the Lions (8-8 this year, for example), I draw entirely too much negative attention to the Lions' forum. Next best thing: to leave.

That being said, I appreciate the good times from some/most of you. Addict - it was fun... laughed regularly from your posts. Could be the greatest poster on here. Scotty D - had a good time with the mocks and different events. MNYM2 - had some pretty intense discussions... you're a very reasonable and knowledgeable fan. Appreciate it. IAC - never seemed to agree but it made some of this interesting. The rest of you - good luck in the future and enjoy.

I'm out. Take it easy everyone.

Speaking of mock offseasons.. before this season started, we had a little known NFL Mock. I traded down from #5 to #7 and picked up Vontae Davis with that pick. The trade was #7 and a Round 2 for #5, Round 4, and Shaun Cody. In Round 2, I got us CJ Spiller and Max Unger.
