Hey,
I am a pretty big DVD fan (I've hot hundreds) but I don't want to take the plunge and can get an HD or BluRay player, at least not yet.
I see a lot of DVD players out there upconvert standard DVD's and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with that and if it's enough of a difference to be worth dropping a couple hundred bucks on.

They're very expensive for good ones. You would be better off using a PC to upconvert. Does a better quality job, has way more functions, and is a better value.
Do some googling of HTPCs and a program called ffdshow.
HD-DVD is where it's at. It upconverts every standard DVD if you have the HDMI cable. But then again I honestly don't see the reason of paying an extra $250-300 for Blu-Ray player, so I guess you could say I'm an HD-DVD fanboy. Also I just like the movie selections for HD-DVD better; Hot Fuzz, Children of Men, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and the Matrix trilogy, Knocked Up, 40 Year Old Virgin, Shaun of the Dead, The Big Lebowski, The Bourne Movies, Heroes (if you're into that show) and coming later this year Anchorman and Old School (all of these movies are exclusive to HD-DVD, except the Matrix trilogy for the time being because of the picture in picture feature HD-DVD players contain and Blu-Rays lack).

well i work at circuit city and ive gatherd that the entire store is split down teh middle between wahts better, blue ray or hd-dvd. honestly i can't tell the difference between the two (hd and blue ray) but both have significant difference over regular. if you want ill go in tomorrow and see if we have any upconverting dvd players on display to see how much better it makes the picture
have either of the new formats made significant gains in the race for supremacy... which one is predicted as going to win out?
Right now, it seems that Blu-Ray is crushing the competition (PS3 sales on top of the regular player sales).

I was under the impression that upconverting didn't improve quality that much but I don't know for certain. Either way, in a few years, the format will be flash drive movies. Discs will most likely be dead.

well i talked to some of the guys i work with and they say that upconverting dvd players are worth it. they all said that as long as you get a 1080p upconverting dvd player it does a wonderful job.
as far as who is winning the hd vs blue ray battle. noone is and alot of people i work with don't think anyone will and companies will have to release movies in both hd and blue ray
ps. i know i probably have millions of typos in this its past midnight here and i am extremely tired

Considering that HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are still a few years away from being mainstream, I'd say we have at least a decade before another major format change.
