So last night I went to the Breaking Benjamin/Three Days Grace/Seether/Skillet Concert here in Bloomington with my buddy and he wanted to get a little liquored up before we went out; I really didn't but he peer pressured me into it and I'm a softy and didn't say no. So we got some alcohol and did a power hour with Rumple Mintze (or however you spell it). Well, I did 8 shots in an hour and 10 minutes (note to others, this is not a good idea at all).
I was feeling fine when we got there and I was alright while Seether was playing but as soon as BB started it hit me like a brick wall. I couldn't stand up and I actually thought I was going to die because there were people all around me jumping up and down. So I decided to get the hell out and got somewhere were I could stand and lean on something. I found the hockey boards and chilled there for 30 minutes (this while my drunk buddy is gone to the bathroom).
Finally, security comes and takes me out. They sit me down near the exit, put a cold wash cloth on my neck and I puke a crap load into a garbage bag. Then they say they're taking me to the hospital to get checked out, I didn't want to go but they pretty much forced me to. As I'm getting up the police officer comes walking over and flat out asks me this;
"So do you want to go to jail or to the emergency room?"
Of course I said the hospital and he was like "good choice" haha. So I took a ride in an ambulance and when I got there they took me to a room and made me lay down on the bed. They gave me an IV, took my BAC, and did some other crap. I got home alright, two girls came and picked me up and brought me home where I just passed out.
So yea...I learned a hard lesson today, if you're going to go and see 2 of your favorite bands play at a concert, do not get smashed. Hell don't do it period at a concert. And don't power hour with 100 proof alcohol either....

What was your BAC? Also did you eat anything before doing those shots?
I've had a bad experience with Rumple Mintz as well. Mine involved punching a hole through my friends wall and dry heaving all night while nothing came up.
It's only surprising you couldn't handle it. The four Bears games so far this season have inspired me to drink heavy.
Seriously, good thing they sent you to the hospital. Be well.

Probably drank more then the shots and if you add an empty stomach to the equation is just asking for trouble.

Unless you weigh about 100 pounds and have a VERY low-tolerance for alcohol, I just can't see that amount of alcohol sending you to the emergency room.

Being in a concert environment likely rose his body temperature along with him sweating and losing fluids allowed the alcohol to have a more potent effect. Unfortunately young people, myself included, don't always properly think out a good strategy when drinking. Over indulgence and lack of food and water will always screw you in the long run.

No not stomach pumped, I never made it to the hospital I always toughed it out with a "baby sitter"(AKA my dad) to watch me while I slept. No health insurance is a ***** and I didn't have the cash flow to shell out on hospital bill.

How do you know you had alcohol poisoning then? I was always under the assumption that if you had alcohol poisoning, you had to have your stomach pumped or you would die/be hurt permanently. I went to the hospital once, got an IV, and was observed, but it wasn't alcohol poisoning.

Good to hear you are ok man, I don't drink anymore but I can relate I guess. When I was 17 I drank, well I can't remember exactly, but I hurled outside the pub, made the taxi pull over 5 times in 2 miles to let me throw up (it's £50 fine if you puke in a taxi) and then passed out on the pavement outside my house. An ambulance was called for me but I woke up so they cancelled it. I laid on the ground for 45 mins saying I couldn't get up as I was dead as well. Yeah, we've all been there.

You should try some quality craft beers at some point. Drinking alcoholic beverages isn't always about getting drunk. I'd hate to see somebody miss out on the greatness that is beer just because they only knew of it as an alcohol delivery system.

Yep, we're constantly evolving as human beings. If you're not evolving, then you're stagnating. And if you're stagnating, then you're dead. I think it's important to always keep an open mind and never shut yourself off to anything- within reason. A closed mind will yield very little in the way of enjoyment, among many other things. I can't imagine life without great beer. Not only is it very pleasing on the palate, but it's also quite healthful when consumed in moderation.

I know one thing that will make you want to drink .... poontang. They go hand in hand most nights.
I went to the hospital recently, too. Long story short, I got my tonsils out earlier this month, and a week later, I was eating some pizza when I had to go to the bathroom. After I washed my hands, I spit in the sink.
But spit didn't come out. Blood did.
I quickly went to the hospital, spitting blood in a cup the entire way. When I finally got there, they examined me, put me to sleep and stitched up the back of my throat, and got my stomach pumped of all the blood that I had inadvertently swallowed. It turns out I had broken a blood vessel in the back of my throat.
The lesson here is, don't eat pizza. Yeah, right.
Oh, and while bleeding from the back of your throat isn't as painful as you might think, it is terribly inconvenient on a Friday night.

Or perhaps he won't drink? What a concept. I really have no interest in beer/alcohol, or at least not normal stuff just for the sake of drinking. I know there is some great beer out there (like duckseason is talking about) and I plan on drinking some when I visit my brother, but I'd much rather have some soda or gatorade than most beer. zOMG I drink something that I like, go figure.

Tastes change as you get older. Do you think it is a coincidence that most 12 year olds drink pop where as most people 25+ would rather enjoy a beer or another alcoholic drink?
Saying you never want to drink when you're 17 is stupid. That's like saying I never want to get married. You have no idea how your life, tastes, values, etc. are going to change. Hell, you're just beginning the biggest transformation of your life and you think that you can actually rule out something like drinking a beer?

Beer/alcohol is an acquired taste. Does everybody like it? No. But a ton of people do, and making the determination of whether you do or not when you're 17 isn't likely going to be the determination. Hell, you have 4 years before you're even legal.

I've had alcohol poisoning without going to hospital before. Moving resulted in vomit. I didn't drink for months.
I don't really get why the OP or his friend felt it was necessary to drink that much before a concert. A few shots before a show can be a ton to fun, but 8 shots of strong alcohol, especially when you're not an experienced drinker, seems like a stupendously bad idea.
I don't get this at all, when the body induces that much alcohol that fast isn't the natural reaction to throw it back up at a pretty good rate of knots after which you feel much better? I've never been hospitalised or anything from drinking (although i am a regular 2-4 times a week reasonably heavy drinker, most of which is done in environments similar to the one described, clubs, concerts, music festivals etc.) but from my experience a quick chunder sess and you're good to go. I personally blame the popularity of light beer in your country for the alcohol poisoning phenom.

some thoughts.
-if i am going to a concert that i paid good money for, i am not gonna F it up by getting hammered. being crammed into a space with sweaty bodies is not where i want to be when i'm drunk.
-i think i have a different definition of power hour. power hour= a shot of beer every minute for an hour. it equals about 7 cans of beer and will mess you ass up.
-8 shots in an hour doesn't seem like too much.
-when i was 18 (beginning of my freshman year of college) i swore i would never drink. said it 'wasn't me' lasted about 3 months. beer rules.

hah, yeah, my friends from high school never drank, so i just figured i'd stay away from the booze in college too. but, curiosity got the best of me after a semester, and after some peer pressure from chick i really wanted to nail, i tried it. didn't even really like it that much, so i didn't drink for my second time until St. Patrick's Day of my Freshman year....and THAT was a fun time. after that college got crazy.
but, while i probably coulda been defined as a lush in college, that is far from the truth now. I LOVE good beer (part of my Wisconsin Pride), but I am rarely ever drunk. I have 3 or 4 beers on many occasions, but it's been good long time since my last all out bender. having an 8 month pregnant wife doesn't really hurt with that either.

A) We took 8 shots in an hour (actually they were 1 1/2 shot glasses)
B) I had nothing to eat all day long

E) I was pretty much forced to go the hospital. It was either that or jail, so I chose the emergency room.

I'm not trying to lay blame on anyone, just pointing out that when you are going to indulge in some alcohol that a bit of plaining needs to be involved. Mainly eat before you drink. Don't feel bad about it tough, I was at a cookout on Labor Day weekend with plenty of food and didn't eat and got trashed and made a fool out of myself. In fact it destroyed my chance of engaging in sexual congress with an attractive young lady I met at said cookout. Life is all about learning, and now we both know about a valuable lesson.
