Couldn't find this posted...and the only site i found it on was profootballtalk.com. But, it would appear that 2 major changes are coming to the NFL Draft in 2008.

1-first round time limit reduced to 10 minutes.

2-first round moved to Friday night.

my thoughts...
I guess i'm ok with both. 15 minutes seemed a little long....and i always liked my routine of waking up on saturday to watch the draft...but, i think i can adapt to wasting a friday night glued to the TV.

Love the first change, but not a big fan of the 2nd... It's probably going to make it alot harder for so many people to make it up there to watch the draft, though I'm sure anyone who was going anyways probably can afford to take a Friday off all together

I believe some of the time limits of the mid rounds will be changed as well.

Friday night... Thats pretty weird. Well atleast who ever gets drafted will be scrolling down the bottom of the screen because bars are usually loud on Friday nights.

I'd love it, but I'm being selfish as I only want it because it would mean it starts at mid day Saturday for us Aussies, instead of like 3am Sunday.

I like it how it is. I enjoy spending all weekend on the couch watching the draft. I don't really want any part of it to be moved to Friday.

I like the shortening of the first round.

I like the idea of shortenning the time limit for 1st round picks, but I don't understand the point of moving Day 1 to Friday night.

I don't know if I like Shortening the picks. Less time to plan trades or get them going if your player gets taken right before you.

apparently the point of it is; the draft has become a good ratings event, and advertising costs more on friday night that saturday during the day...so, it's all about money.

I like shortening the time down to 10 minutes. Iíve never really understood why you need 15 minutes to make a pick to begin with. Teams have been studying these prospects for years leading into the draft. They know everything from any injuries they had in pee-wee football to what their favorite breakfast cereal is. I know you need SOME time to wheel and deal for trades. But I donít think you need 15 minutes to make a trade. 10 minutes is plenty IMO.

Not sure I like the idea of moving the draft to primetime on Friday. Friday evening is Miller Time. Hard to concentrate on the draft when Iím knocking back a bunch of cold ones after a long week of work.

Just my opinion.

I dunno about you, buts that exactly what I do when the draft is on Saturday afternoon anyway.

Yes! both needed to be done for 2 reasons: 1-no one likes sitting for 2 1/2 hours just to watch the top 10 picks and 2-it's better to watch at night than it is to watch all day long

Bad thing about it: you have to wait until Saturday to see who you get after the first.

Excellent move shortening the first round time limit to 10 minutes, the 15-minute limit was too long 98% of the time.

Although the idea of moving all of the first round to primetime Friday, I'm not sure about. The first round is a four or five hours long, even with the shortened limit. Maybe the first 16 picks, or at least an early start?

I hope with the 10 minute intervals that the draft goes commercial free, just have like ads in the corner sometimes during the broadcast like in soccer games.

Not a fan of moving it to Friday night, I liked the tradition of Saturday moving, but I didn't like how long the draft lasted last year on day one.

Are these officially announced changes? I know the idea of moving the 1st round to primetime friday night television was being kicked around, but I never heard that it had been confirmed.

I would love both options seeing as though the draft is always on Sunday Morning/Monday Morning.

Is the Friday thing for sure, because I'm not a fan of that at all.... that completely screws up my whole routine.

And if so, is it just first round on Friday night? When will the rest be? All 6 on saturday, or split up like before?

Exactly what I was thinking. The Friday night thing was not confirmed last I heard.

EDIT: Link showing the 10 min. rule will happen. No confirmation on Friday night.

I like the idea of the friday because i've missed the last 2 drafts because i'm usually not available saturdays. Also 15 minutes was way too long.

I havent heard anything about a switch to Friday night...I dont think that's the case but, if that were to happen...I'd be against it. I love it how it is.

I don't like this at all. I agree, with what someone said earlier, and that I like just waking up early and spending the whole Saturday relaxing and watching the draft.

On ESPN they just reported that the first round will be 10 minutes, second will be 7, all others will be 5, and it will not start on Friday. The first 3 rounds will all be on Saturday, but it will likely have a later start time.

I like both changes. The NFL is obviously trying to make the NFL Draft into a big event and I think they are succeeding.

I'll tell you this....

NFL GMs won't be happy about losing 5 minutes on their pick. That is valuable time.

"PHILADELPHIA -- The NFL on Tuesday cut from 15 minutes to 10 the time between picks in the first round of its draft after a 2007 record round of 6 hours and 8 minutes.

It also moved the starting time of the draft from noon ET to 3 p.m. and limited the first day to two rounds instead of three."

Saturday will now start at 3:00 also. I just don't like it because it splits up things, keeps it away from Sunday, which is the typical day for football. I'd rather the times stay the same, but the length of picks shortened, but whatever.

So It looks like no 1st round on friday

1st and 2nd rounds on Saturday, starting at 3:00 PM, 10 minutes per pick for the first, 7 minutes for the second.

3rd-7th are 5 minutes per pick starting 10 AM on Sunday.

Why move the third round to the second day? Is it to improve ratings on the second day? You'd think there would be more time on Saturday for the third round with the reduced pick times.

Scotty D

Stay up from 3 EST Saturday until the end of the draft. Whose with me?!?

Shane P. Hallam
10-23-2007, 01:06 PM
With 5 minutes less a pick, you are reducing a lot of time, over 3 hours, so it will only go just as late I think...

10-23-2007, 01:27 PM
I'm not sure about the changes but I don't really care at this point because I'm just excited to be able to watch it now for the first time.

M.O.T.H.
10-23-2007, 03:17 PM
I'm not happy at all. What's the point of dropping the 3rd round from the first day? That's just pointless. I could care less about the time to make the pick actually but, messing w/ the starting time and rounds per day, just annoys the hell out of me.

Shane P. Hallam
10-23-2007, 03:40 PM
I'm going to take a guess that they aren't making these rules for us, as us draftniks will watch no matter what. But, most people drop out by the end of the first round. Now, they are opening to hook people for the whole first day, since it is shorter. And basically they move the 2nd day back some so only the hardcore will watch anyways.

I don't like the change.. I boo the NFL for this decision!

I don't like the new setup. This is geared towards the West Coast.

Back in 1994 they started the draft at 3pm. If I recall, they did the first two rounds on Saturday & then finished up on Sunday.

It did not feel like the NFL Draft.

Let's just put the draft back on Weds Mornings & starting at 9am.

I wouldn't mind something like this...

Friday: 1st round only, starting at 6 pm eastern and being 10 minutes long per pick.
Saturday: Rounds 2-4 starting at 3 pm eastern. Round 2-picks 7 minutes long, round 3-picks 5 minutes long.
Sunday: Rounds 5-7 starting at 12 pm eastern. All picks 5 minutes long.
