I also side with Annie. Especially after Debate 101.
And I can't even rate my top characters because they are all fantastic. A top 4 would be Troy, Abed, Senor Chang, Pierce.

Yeah, that was it for me too. One character that's quickly becoming one of my favorites is Shirley. I think she referred to Abed one time as the "Middle-Eastern magic 8-ball," which is one of my favorite lines so far.

Whenever the opening skit lands some good jokes, it usually sucks me in for the rest of the episode. Fred Armison as Obama and the whole White House party crashers spoof was awesome.
As big of Tiger fan as I am, I am really glad they hammered him the way they did. Keenan Thompson as Eldrick? Eh. Still, funny stuff.

Chuck is good for a stand alone non serialized show. Normally Im not a big fan of shows where each episode is independant & few plot items are carried out or explored through multiple episodes, but Chuck is fun. And the sheer amount of ridiculously hot females they find roles for has to be mentioned.
That said, Breaking Bad is way way way better.
FlyingElvis
12-07-2009, 01:36 PM
Breaking Bad's first season was only 8 episodes (6, maybe?) b/c of the strike. The second season was a full season but I can't recall how many episodes. It is a show that you MUST watch from episode one. They ran all of season one in the few weeks running up to the season 2 premier but I don't know if they will do that for season 3. It's #1 on my list by a large margin.
EDIT:
Season 1 = 7 episodes
Season 2 = 13, so a marathon prior to the season 3 premier would definitely be a marathon.

Arrested Development is beyond over-rated on this board and IASIP is pretty over-rated as well, the league's been better this season and during their run there have been plenty of comedies that have been as good or better, community and the big bang theory right now, How I met your mother in years past. I'd also add Spaced, I know it started airing in 99, but season 2 was in 2001 and that show is truly great, I mean...

Diab, other shows that should be in contention for that list are Californication, Flight of the Conchords, LOST (for all its flaws, its still better then some of the shows you have on there), Party Down (only 1 season, but it was a season of awesome), Veronica Mars should absolutely be on there...Damn, lots of good shows ahhaa.

Sunny is over-rated on here. It's one of the good comedies out right now, but that's it, it isn't by far the greatest comedy on tv right now like many people like to believe.
Party Down was awesome but I think Bored to Death's one season has been even mroe awesome.
And I liked this past season of weeds, after season 2 they started being more of a drama than a dramedy and it took them two years to figure that change out, this past season I thought they found a groove again were getting better and better.

Damn. I forgot all about Bored to Death.
Sunny is basically the anti-sitcom sitcom. It is unabashed, crude and quite deranged most of the time. For me, those are criteria for good comedy and very few shows deliver that. Sunny, The League, Bored to Death are on the short list for that. I haven't seen Party Down.

I'm not saying sunny isn't funny and I don't watch every episode, but it isn't a on a level of its own. There are a fair number of shows that I laugh just as much watching, and this isn't counting Fox News, CNBC or CNN. And unfortunately APS isn't the only one who treats it like it's an all-time great, like South Park, because he's got a lot of things working against him so we need to forgive the falseness of his words.

Some didn't make the cut (Rescue Me, Party Down, Dead Like Me, et al) because I hadn't seem them. Others didn't make it because either I haven't watched them or didn't like them past the one or two episodes I did catch (Eastbound and Down, Flight of the Conchords, Bored To Death).
I've mentioned on here several times that I tried getting into Always Sunny but just couldn't. I never laughed out loud as I have with other comedies (Scrubs, The League, Chappelle's Show, Undeclared) and didn't think it was on par with the aforementioned. I've read somewhere that Always Sunny was compared to Seinfeld but on crack. I can see that because crack is whack and so is Always Sunny. I don't think the show is over-rated, but I do think there are several people who post in this thread that hype it up to be more than it is: a mediocre show with only one funny guy (Charlie). I feel the same way about Arrested Development. When watching it, I could definitely see how people would like it, but it just wasn't for me.
I do admit, LOST was great for the first couple of seasons and then it got lost within itself. When comparing it to other shows of the decade, however, there were several that I couldn't stop watching (if I had them on DVD) or couldn't wait for them to come on (The Sopranos). LOST was good for what it was but it's steady decline really killed it for me, same was Weeds. Entourage is comparable in that the later seasons weren't as good as the first couple but those first two were brilliant.
Yeah, Band of Brothers is a mini-series but it was incredible as was another mini-series in Generation Kill. Both were stellar and deserve to be where they are in the rankings, regardless if they were a long running series or not.

I would argue it is easier to be really good for a small amount of episodes. Like you said Lost was great for the first couple of seasons. That is a longer running time than Band of Brothers. It is different entity in my mind is all.
I'll go ahead and address a few things...

Lost didn't have a steady decline. It had a couple of short lasting slumps (beginning of season 2 and the first half of season 3), but since the second half of season 3 started, the show hasn't stopped to get better and better IMO. Last season was absolutely amazing.

I hated the last season of Lost. It was boring and drawn out until the finale, which was admittedly spectacular, but overall the season was really lackluster. I felt the same way about the 4th season. I loved the first 3 seasons, but I havent liked the direction they took the show. I agree with Diab that it has gone downhill the past couple seasons.

Season 5 I can UNDERSTAND some complains (although I completely disagree with them), but there is no way in hell you can say Season 4 was boring until the finale. The Constant is the best episode of any series this decade (either that or Family Meeting of The Shield).

Hmmm maybe it was season 3 I was dissatisfied with...Maybe Ill rewatch the series. Anyways, I remember when they revealed The Others and they lost alot of the mystique that they set up around the characters in the first 2 seasons I was really disappointed with the direction that they took that storyline. They were set up as borderline supernatural characters and alot of that was undone later on. I dunno, I liked the show better as that sort of thriller then the derivative time travel sci fi that it is now. Although I was happy when they interjected more of the mythology into the end of this season.

Figured I may as well attempt my top 20 shows for the decade as well. As someone who spent the first half as a student and thus got to watch a ridiculous amount of TV I feel I am in a good position.
Hardest part for me is probably ordering the shows and balancing for genres and what not... but anyway... here goes.
Top 20
1. Chuck - Pretty comfortable with it at #1. Sex Appeal, Humour, Action and just slick as hell. What more could you want, I also think the season 2 ending may be the best ending of the decade.
2. House - Has been consistently brilliant for most of the decade, which puts it above other shows that had great seasons.
3. Prison Break - The first season may be the best season of the decade, sort of lingered from there but I still enjoyed it thoroughly, it certainly was time to go though.
4. Arrested Development - Just loved the show, took a few episodes to get into it, but just plain awesome once it got going.
5. Heroes - First season was just that good, I actually haven't minded any of the season's since, though they certainly are not as strong.
6. Entourage - Just an awesome show, last few seasons have been very mediocre though.
7. Futurama - Loved the show, first season was not in the decade, but whatever, it's not like I can distinguish between the seasons, they were all awesome.
8. One Tree Hill - Meh... for all that I didn't and dont want to like it, once I start watching I get hooked.
9. How I Met Your Mother - Great Show, glad they ended the relationship Barney though, that was getting old.
10. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia - Only got into this one pretty recently, man was I missing out.
11. Stargate SG-1 - Great show that ran for a large part of the decade, Atlantis was never as good, haven't even tried the new one yet, but will eventually, hopefully.
12. Rome - This show was great, really wish they had gone on longer.
13. Californication - It's first season rivals Prison Break, it's second almost pushes it out of this list, it's third was great until about a week ago, Hank needs to be single for the show to work.
14. Weeds - First couple of seasons were great, then it became a drama and forgot to be funny, last season was much better, though still way to much drama.
15. The OC - Yeah, yeah... I was hooked and Bilson is still one of the hottest women on the planet.
16. Gossip Girl - See the OC and One Tree Hill, just a character flaw I guess.
17. Friday Night Lights - Something about the show is just off, permanently, but it is still great, still think it needs way more focus on the football side of things.
18. Chappelle's Show - I found many of the skits to be pretty ordinary, but there were some absolute gems as well.
19. Scrubs - Could quite easily be a lot higher, later seasons they seemed to latch onto the elements I didn't like at the expense of the elements I did like though, which knocked it down a bit.
20. Hustle - British show, highly recommend to anyone who hasn't seen it. So slick.
Honourable Mentions
Two and a Half Men - Was 21st, but couldn't find a spot.
Stargate Atlantis - Was still a good show, even if it wasn't SG1 good.
Modern Family - The potential is certainly there, though 1 season wont get you on the list.
Community - See Modern Family
The League - Again, see Modern Family.
Bored to Death - Needs some changes, but also has potential.
Playmakers - One season wont get you on the list. Was great though.
Reunion - Same as Playmakers, shame it didn't get to end, may still be the best concept for a show in the decade.
Reaper - Was fun while it lasted, again, longevity did it in.
Desperate Housewives - Was good, I sort of lost interest after the time jump.
Coupling - Another British show that is very much worth watching.
Skins - Also British, also good.
Noteable Exclusions
The Sopranos - I have it to watch, have been meaning to watch, but it is a big time investment, maybe over Christmas I might be able to find that time. The few episodes I've seen indicate that it will find a home somewhere in the top 20.
Band of Brothers - See the Sopranos. Like Sopranos, I don't want to be distracted watching it and I want to enjoy it in all it's HD glory, so 3 housemates make this one hard to do, one day...
Dexter - Same deal as Sopranos and Band of Brothers. Have seen 1 episode and I liked.
Burn Notice - Enjoyed what I have seen of it, never felt the urge to go out of my way to watch it though, will be something I will watch when other shows run out.
Battlestar Galactica - Exactly the same as Sopranos.
Smallville - Sopranos...
Supernatural - Sopranos...
24 - Have seen the first season, mean to see the rest someday, enjoyed it, if the rest are as good, could certainly see top 20 for it.
Shows I watched that missed.
Lost - Loved the first season, but it lost the plot early in the 2nd and lost me later that season, I have it to watch, but again, finding time, alone, to watch it is difficult.
Veronica Mars - Seen a few episodes, never got hooked, though it had elements to it that make it seem solid.
The Office - Never liked it, have seen a few episodes and can honestly say I never laughed at it. Ditto for the british version.
Thats about it, as with any list covering such a long time period, I'm sure there is some disgraceful omission that should be there, probably top 5.
Have done my best to explain, though I'm sure there will be no one who agrees completely, some even at all, with this list. Either way, have fun reading it.

I think it'd be hard to make a top 20 but I'll give it a shot.
1. Chuck - Easily tops my list. It's funny, has great action and a great cast. Adam Baldwin is at his best as Agent John Casey, and that is saying a lot considering his other roles.
2. Veronica Mars - I didn't watch this when it was originally on, but it battles for the number one spot. Doesn't hurt that Kristen Bell is a goddess.
3. Psych - One of the best shows on TV. Amazing cast who work so well together.
4. Dexter - I loved the books but Michael C. Hall has really taken Dexter to a whole new plane. He's fantastic in this role.
5. Firefly - Fox canceled this show too early but the cast was great and it's easy to see why it became a cult favorite overnight. Joss Whedon is a great storyteller.
6. Burn Notice - How can you not love Michael Westin?
7. The Office - Guaranteed laughs every week. Need I say more?
8. Curb Your Enthusiasm - I might be in the minority but I like this more than I did Seinfeld.
9. Family Guy - Pretty self explanatory. Hard not to like this show.
10. Scrubs - The first five or six seasons were very good. I can't watch that show without my favorite character, Dr. Jan Itor.
11. 30 Rock - Witty and well written, it's one of the best comedies on TV.
12. House - The only medical show on TV worth watching. By far.
13. Sports Night - I'm a huge Aaron Sorkin fan and it's really a shame he didn't continue to write this show after The West Wing hit it big.
14. Glee - Already one of my favorite shows. Great writing, great cast and the kids can really sing. I know a lot of people don't like it but I look forward to it every week.
15. Community - One of the best new comedies that has come around in a while. It has me cracking up every week without fail.
16. Friday Night Lights - I'm a football fan (obviously) so it's entertaining, but definitely not top 10 imo.
17. Arrested Development - Funny show and really well written. I don't think it's as good as others here do, but it's definitely one of the better shows to be developed over the last ten years.
18. Dollhouse - Huge fan of Firefly and Whedon (#5) and another show canceled a bit too early. It had its moments and I think could have been a lot better had Whedon had his way from the start. Good old Fox does it again.
19. Studio 60 - Also written by Aaron Sorkin (Sports Night, West Wing). Only had a single season on NBC but I liked it more than West Wing almost instantly, which failed to make my list.
20. The League - A show about dick and fart jokes revolving around fantasy football. This show speaks to me.
That was tougher than I thought it would be. I didn't want Psych to be #3 but it was hard to put it over Chuck and VM.
edit: I did forget about Six Feet Under. It would be up there but I'm way too lazy to revise the entire list.
edit2: Dead Like Me might make the list too. Hrm.

Have seen one episode of Psych and I enjoyed it, it gets a crap run over here, like midnight or something. Basically I find shows that either appeal to me online or that I see on TV and like. Psych is one I will probably get around to one day.
None of you have Six Feet Under on your lists? Really?
I honestly can't say I have ever seen an episode of it. It was one that I would have had to watch on TV and from memory it was on at 10:30 or 11:30 at night after a bunch of shows I had no interest in. If it's as good as you say it may be one to watch. If I haven't seen it, I can't rate it.
West Wing is another highly regarded show that fits in the same criteria and before anyone mentions them, if it is a cop show it is very unlikely I have shown it any interest, I've never watched one that really interested me to be honest. Ditto Medical shows(House and Scrubs aside).

Entourage- It is okay as much as I have seen, most of the series, it never is that great.
How I Met Your Mother- A really well done sitcom. It didn't do anything new.
Deadwood- Never got into it
Rome- Ditto
Can't believe I forgot about curb so i cheated.

Shows I need to watch:
Mad Men
Breaking Bad
Veronica Mars
BSG
I plan to take care of Breaking Bad this weekend, I keep hearing good things about Mad Men, I think I will have to give it a go. Deadwood is another that I hear good things, I don't even know if it has ever been on TV over here, never seen it at least.

Probably because Diab did a top 20 for this decade and I thought that was what everyone was doing. At least that would explain why this awesomeness isn't mentioned:

I don't know if I can make a top 20 list of the decade, because for most of the past ten years I didn't watch very much tv. With that said, Six Feet Under and Dexter are my top two. Californication is up there in the top ten. I like House a lot but I haven't loved any episodes of the last three seasons aside from "Wilson's Heart" and "Broken." Nip/Tuck probably deserves a mention, although it is probably only up there because there are a handful of shows I haven't seen. Criminal Minds is a guilty pleasure of mine.
I really don't watch much TV. The Office, Scrubs, Flight of Conchords and the Sporanos are the only shows I've regularly watched the past 10 years. Not a big fan of dramas for whatever reason.

- Psych
- The Office

- The Colbert Report
- The Daily Show
- Chappelle's Show
- Scrubs
- Futurama
- That 70s Show
- Reno 911!
- Malcolm in the Middle

Those are the only shows I can think of that I've watched fairly consistently from the 2000s.

Let's do this. My personal top 10, although I must admit I haven't seen some of the more revered shows like Sons of Anarchy, the Wire, etc. One day.
1. Veronica Mars: Best characters/story/humor/acting on television during it's run. Seasons 2 and 3 were not the magic of the first, but honestly what could be? The perfect season long murder mystery. Kristin Bell is not just a pretty face either. Or hot body. Moving on...
2. Angel: More mature, better storylines, and each season IMO was stronger than the next.
3. Buffy: Yah it's buffy. Even the nosedive the later seasons took can't derail it for me.
4. IASIP: Holy hell I've never laughed like this at a TV show.
5. Lost: Mmmmhmm enough has been said but ridiculously amazing show.
6. The West Wing: The gold standard for compelling television.
7. Arrested Development: Okay maybe I have laughed like this at a TV show before.
8. South Park: Reigning cartoon champion.
9. Six Feet Under: Oh Fishers. You lovely ****** up Fishers.
10. Jeopardy: Yeaaah you know it suckas. Trebek 4 lyfe.

Probably my favorite show of all time and I know I will get ripped for saying that and I don't care I still watch reruns almost daily.
It is one of the most well cast shows of all time IMO every one fits their part to a tee.
I know everyone hates Roseanne Barr and to tell you the truth I'm not really a fan of her's away from the show but on this show she was great and so was the rest of the cast.
I forgot how funny the "Finer Things Club" episode of the office is, very good.

Did people really play flipcup? I've played it about three times in my life, once was a pledging event were we played with cups that had a chunk cut out of them and almost one and the other two times where when I was trying to hook up with my friend's older sister. All I ever see now-a-days is BP.

Yeah Flip-Cup has taken over a lot of "house parties" here in Wisconsin. Beer pong is still first choice, but more people can get in on a game of Flip Cup sooo yeah.
Unfortunately, themed parties have shifted from sweater parties, jersey night, etc.,to basically Swine Flu passing. Sharing cups and spit is a great idea these days.
