Honestly, as someone who has watched every episode of Californication so far, if you want to start watching it, just start at season 4. Everything you need to know is in the "previously on Californication" right at the start of the first episode of season 4.

Seasons 1-3 of Californication is great tv. I would definitely not recommend skipping them just because there is a minute and a half recap prior to season four.

Yes it is great TV, Hank Moody has become a subculture unto himself as an iconic cable character. He is to the New Millenium what Lord Byron was the Romantic Movement, same lifestyle too......

Justified returned for Season 2 this month like gangbusters (literally), Raylan Givens doesn't get his release from the hometown blues of Harlan Co., KY back to Miami, & we have some of the greatest redneck supporting cast in TV history returning in Walton Goggins as Boyd Crowder & Margo Martindale as Mags Bennett. Good times. I noted with interest that the Jim Beam commercial (since when do they advertise hard liquor on TV? after primetime & 10PM I guess) with Willem Dafoe in multiple roles premiered with Season 2. I don't think I've seen a series where the characters are always seen drinking beer of bourbon (well, it IS KY) as much as Justified, it's 2011 now & product placement is of paramount significance.

Community is the best comedy on tv right now and it isn't close imo. I like Parks and Rec and Archer a lot, but neither touch Community for me.

It would be an interesting debate. I'd probably place Archer and Modern Family above Community right now. Community might also be tied with Psych for me. It's still a damn fine show and one of my favorite, though.

IMO Modern Family steps to the plate every week with a quality episode. Community on the other hand has alot of up and down episodes. Community has better peaks than Modern Family (with the exception of one Modern family episode, Fisbo the Clown). It seems however that Community will throw out about 2 super awesome explode in your pants and make babies with the neighbors wife episodes. Like, Paintball episode or Dungeons and Dragons episode.

While I've only seen a couple episodes of Modern Family (really enjoyed it), I can agree with this. Community definitely has its ups and downs.

Is the second half of the first season of Justified worth watching? I watched the first half, and while I appreciated it, it gave me too much of the procedural feeling where Raylan would just go around shooting some random criminal every week. Just wasn't enough to keep me interested I guess.

Huh? Community is infinitely more clever than Modern Family. Hell, Modern Family isn't even as good as Cougar Town (which is great in its own right) at this point, and it's getting a bit overrated. I really like it, but it's not in the league of Community/Parks and Rec/Curb Your Enthusiasm/Louie.

Anyone watch Human Target's season finale last night? Pretty good, love me some Guerrero.

This season was decent, as good as cancelled though, season finale's with no cliff hangers usually aren't a good sign, the episode just reeked of series closure. Given the obvious costs of the show and the moderate ratings considering it isn't huge with the 18-30 market, I can't see it coming back even though I'd like to see it back just for the heck of it. I just think the show veered off way too much from the original premise. The original premise was great as Chance was the rogue agent who was atoning for a former life as an assassin. Guerrero and Winston were great characters. I also enjoyed the new love interest every week, making every week like a new mini movie. The hiring of Ilsa Pucci this year IMO ruined the show. While they stepped up the production value Chance definitely lost his edge and mystery and it started to feel too much like a teenage drama. Regardless of if it is back the show somewhat filled the void of 24, although I guess I was looking for anything and was able to ignore several cheesy parts. A fairly entertaining show though.

I'm a fan of Human Target but I am not a fan of the new direction the series took either. The show was almost canceled last year and got a new head showrunner (Matt Miller, former Chuck writer) and he had to try and change it up a bit.

I was never a fan of Ilsa but I love Aimes (<3 <3) and the rest of the cast was good. Guerrero was a giant badass in every episode, especially this finale.

I enjoy it and I'll watch it if it comes back, but it has never and probably will never be a must see for me.

Californication was effing great! The previous ep had some great moments too, I thought Duchovny was going to punch out McElhone's new boyfriend in the nightclub after his daughter's gig, maybe that's where that's going eventually. Hank Moody has swung on an LA cop + numerous boyfriends of his former sex buddies, he's one pugnacious mammajamma.

Right about Gugino, not a fan of the haircut though. Do ya'll get the feeling he's being prosecuted for statutory rape b/c he's a celeb so he can claim he's being persecuted as an example in a CA election yr? That **** worked for Michael Jackson & Robert Blake when they did their felonies.

Was Lowe doing Brad Pitt, or doing Robert Downey Jr. in Tropical Thunder who was a "Dude doing an impression of a dude doing another dude?" Hard to tell. Lowe is stone deaf in one ear but still does incredible accents in his performances.

I too am disappointed in House, the writing & storylines have regressed badly, they're relying on House firing a team member every other ep & Amber Tamblyn's boohoo facial expression about to burst into tears every ep. And he saves every freaking patient now, that smacks of caving to survey group results scriptwriting to me, (facepalm) these patients have the most exotic & always fatal diseases found in the medical casehistory books. They need to kill 1 or 2 off now & again for realism.

That happens when the star begins getting >$1M per episode. Look at Charlie Sheen & declining quality of 2 & A Half Men, his in & out of rehab, coke & hookers sybarite lifestyle making headlines fueled popularity for it for awhile, now it's just trite & unfunny.

Agree entirely, first season was epic when it was one of the funniest shows on TV, 2nd started getting a bit more serious, 3rd even more so, 4th was more drama than comedy. Latest season was solid though, got back to more comedy with a fair bit less drama which is a great thing for that show!

Yeah, Ashby for right now. Nero looks like he's going to be a great character but there is still a lot of the season to go.

I'm watching it, the American version on SyFy, one of their few hits. I really like it too, Sam Huntington as the wholesome, dorky werewolf makes it for me.

Semi-Spoiler Alert if you watch BBC America: My wife watched the BBC version 1st season & said the American series on SyFy mirrors it exactly.

I missed yesterday's episode. This show has potential.

Glad to see it's getting some traction with viewers. You can catch the Monday night ep with On Demand later.

Shameless is the funniest show on TV, bar none. Maybe it's just because it's so contrasting to how I grew up as a kid, but I can't watch more than 5 minutes of it and not laugh (or drool, because Emma Rossum is hot).

I stopped watching House at the beginning of the current season. Missed an episode and realized that I didn't care about the fact that I missed it. It's bad now.

I stopped watching it when they neutered House and made it a chick show in the middle of season 4 I think. Though, I definitely think 13 was the best thing about that show until she left.

Totally agree with Bengals here -- The TP homage ep was awesome, best this yr. Twin Peaks had a small but very fanatical, vocal following that kept it on the air. David Lynch isn't for everybody & doesn't try to be.

Agree about Royal Pains, could be better in a few aspects <sarcasm> like the acting, the scripts, the characters, pretty much everything. I thought it was just a summer fluff replacement but apparently gathered an audience. Brod is correct, the 2nd season is pretty bland blah, they needed to beef up Scott Campbell/Boris' & Divya's parts instead of Henry Winkler (but I guess the former Fonz came more expensively) as they're the best things the show has going for it, thanx to bengals for the pic. Rarely if ever do I bother with RP anymore.

BtD: The loser detective/fiction writer wannabee self-loathing Jewish guy, that's Jason Swartzman who was the protag in Rushmore, it was a sorta-kinda black comedy with Bill Murray, & he's Talia Shire's son. Ted Danson as George is his head-in-the clouds older stoner friend & Zach Giafialnikis is his comic book author & also loser friend. Great supporting cast includes John Hodgman who hates & undermines him & Oliver Platt as a drunk atty. The whole thing is an absurdist comedy in NYC with no laughtrack -- it has lyao moments.

Fringe tanked for me pretty much when Noble missed his Emmy & twas revealed (here in fact) that Anna Torv was Rupert Murdoch's niece by a former marriage. I gave up.

I felt like tonights Californication was one of the weaker episodes in the entire series. As fantastic a character as Hank Moody is, they've really gone out of their way to make him less likeable this season. He doesn't quite carry the charm that he had in the earlier seasons, he's just coming across like an asshole these days. I think some of it has to do with the fact that they've moved further away from the family aspect of the show which was such a huge redeeming factor for Moody as a character. His relationship with his daughter and with Karen were his lifelines and we're seeing that without them, he really is an asshole. At least before he was an asshole with the best of intentions, but this entire season has seemed a bit off. Don't get me wrong, it's been strong at points, Id just love to see them get back to what made the show so endearing in the first place. Needs more charm and literary stuff and less sex and showbiz if you ask me.

once more I agree with Mr. 10,000 posts APS here.

I liked Hank Moody a lot more when he had a half empty bottle of Jack Black in one hand, a cig in the other, every 3rd word out of his mouth was **** & that look of prolonged disapproval in closeup from daughter & her mother. And again he's being way to nicey-nice with Karen's new black BF wannabee, the old Hank would've clocked this new rival for her affections 1st & maybe bought him a drink later, not liking the new Hollywood Hank Lite version.

Still not ruling out their coming to fisticuffs over Karen at some point though. And their Queens of Dogtown daughters in a girlfight too, they could actually be the main event :--D

I beg to differ, Angel was an ersatz typical spinoff lacking in quality & petered out as mentioned, but Buffy was a major success & a cash cow for a reason.

Whedon made a ******** of $ selling Buffy from the Paramount cable network to WB. He probably kept most of it, maybe used the $ to make Firefly & later the film Serenity, they weren't paying those then-unknown actors anything when it started in 96 or '97, & they weren't spending a lot of budget on CG monsters. Whedon wanted to do Firefly 1st as a space western but the Buffy feature film was a surprise hit, maybe having Paul Rubens' killer cameo performance helped, so the series happened instead.

The 1st 2-3 seasons were terrific, before Angel left on his spinoff & took Charisma Carpenter with him. Little Buffyverse trivia here: CC was btw originally cast to play Buffy, but they cast Sarah Michelle Geller, a former soap opera teen actress, b/c she had taken some tae kwan do lessons, still needed a blonde stunt dbl. though, & she came cheap. Can't see Charisma (love that name) as Cordelia as anything but a HS cheerleader type. Whedon exercised personal quality control on all the scripts, hired all the actors/actresses/guest stars personally, it introduced such later famous actors as Nathan Fillon

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f7/Nathan_Fillion_at_Serenity_premiere_1.jpg

who later became Capt. Mal Reynolds on Firefly/Serenity.

And that long list of babeolicious eye candy actresses:

the artist formerly known as Prince's backup singer/dancer Robia LaMorte,

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/7b/Jenny%28buffy%29.jpg

Michelle Trachtenberg as Dawn her sister,
http://image.com.com/tv/images/processed/default/fd/06/324495.jpg

Elizabeth Anne Allen as Amy the witch who turned into a rat then back again, minor character but I was thought she was megahot

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6f/Elizabeth_Anne_Allen_w_purse_2004.jpg

Eliza Dushku as Faith the arch-badgirl slayer,

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/7d/Eliza_Dushku_2009.jpg

+ Seth Green (who does Robot Chicken, effing love that show!), Julie Benz of Dexter fame, Juliet Landau who's the daughter of Barbara Bain & Martin Landau from the original Mission Impossible in the 60s, James Marsters, of course David Boreanaz, Alyson Hannigan & others.

Josh Whedon spent 24/7 on the set for 7 yrs, got so wrapped up in it his wife divorced him -- maybe that rumor about him porking Charisma was true :--J -- in a later interview he said his TV work was his family, kind of expect that from a 3rd generation screenwriter like him.

Last couple of seasons (nos. 6 & 7) it dissipated & the storyline became plot-challenged, that's true, when Buffy "died" & they resurrected her, the anticlimactic Armageddon battle at the Hellmouth at Sunnydale HS, etc. All things considered it had a good run & is now a cable classic.

Fox thought the start of the series was too slow and wouldn't retain viewers, but the way they aired the episodes made absolutely no sense to the overall story. It was confusing and jumbled when aired that way. If you watch it from start to finish on DVD, it flows so well.

Basically, Fox sucks.

TMZ & E! are eating this up with a spoon now..................total derangement.

I posted here earlier that Sheen's lifestyle & publicity was fueling his $2M/ep salary (add some zeroes, kill) but he seems to have forgotten there are limits to rehab, you only get so many shots at it. He may well have killed the golden goose.
