Moses' Mock Draft
Version: 1.0
Date: October 24, 2007
Rounds: 1
Draft order is based on Week 8 ESPN Power Rankings (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/powerranking).
Please provide reasoning with any feedback you leave.
---
1. St. Louis Rams
http://static.nfl.com/static/site/img/teams/STL/STL_logo-80x90.gif
Jake Long - Offensive Tackle - Senior - Michigan
The Rams offence is a far cry from the greatest show on turf days. The offensive line needs a new building block up front to replace the aging Orlando Pace. Long is a good fit for this team and should provide an excellent starting point for an offence that has lost its identity.
2. Miami Dolphins
http://static.nfl.com/static/site/img/teams/MIA/MIA_logo-80x90.gif
Glenn Dorsey - Defensive Tackle - Senior - LSU
The Dolphins defence has been awful this season and it looks like they're going to have to completely rehaul that side of the ball. Dorsey is a great start to that rebuilding process and should be a great anchor for the team. Versatility is one of Dorsey's strengths so whatever scheme Miami ends up running he should be an impact player from day one against both the run and pass.
3. New York Jets
http://static.nfl.com/static/site/img/teams/NYJ/NYJ_logo-80x90.gif
Darren McFadden - Runningback - Junior - Arkansas
McFadden could easily be the best player in this draft and teams will learn from their mistakes last year when they passed on Adrian Peterson. The Jets have some work to do on their offence as it's going through a transition period . By adding a player like McFadden, the Jets get a big-time playmaker and another piece to structure their offence around.
4. Atlanta Falcons
http://static.nfl.com/static/site/img/teams/ATL/ATL_logo-80x90.gif
Brian Brohm - Quarterback - Senior - Louisville
The biggest knocks on Brohm are his injury history and the fact that he may be a product of his college system. Bobby Petrino has intimate knowledge of both these areas so he should be comfortable picking his former college quarterback. Brohm gives the Falcons a new quarterback and leader to rally around in Atlanta, something this ailing team desperately needs.
5. New England Patriots (from San Fransisco)
http://static.nfl.com/static/site/img/teams/NE/NE_logo-80x90.gif
Kenny Phillips - Safety - Junior - Miami (FL)
The Patriots could become even more dominant with the addition of another high draft pick. Adding a playmaking safety like Phillips is a great move because the Patriots have some question marks in the secondary. Plus, if their offence keeps dominating like it has been, they'll need all the bodies in the secondary they can get because they'll always be playing with a lead.
6. Oakland Raiders
http://static.nfl.com/static/site/img/teams/OAK/OAK_logo-80x90.gif
Calais Campbell - Defensive End - Junior - Miami (FL)
The Raiders have a lot of talent of their defence with the exception of the defensive line. Campbell is a freakish player because of his length and overall athleticism. Al Davis loves big-time athletes and Campbell is just that. Campbell could be the last piece of the puzzle for a defence that is close to being elite.
7. Minnesota Vikings
http://static.nfl.com/static/site/img/teams/MIN/MIN_logo-80x90.gif
Andre Woodson - Quarterback - Senior - Kentucky
Tarvaris Jackson has been downright awful this season and needs to be replaced as soon as possible. With Adrian Peterson in the backfield, a rookie quarterback should have some opportunities to make plays despite the Vikings lack of receiving options. Woodson has all the physical tools of a great pocket passer and he avoids costly mistakes which makes him a great fit in Minnesota.
8. Buffalo Bills
http://static.nfl.com/static/site/img/teams/BUF/BUF_logo-80x90.gif
DeSean Jacskon - Wide Receiver - Junior - California
The Bills need to bolster their offence if they want to be contenders. The quarterback situation is sketchy right now but it needs time to play out. Wide receiver, on the other hand, needs immediate reinforcements. Jackson is a speedster who gives the Bills a big play threat who needs to be accounted for on every play. Between Evans, Parrish, and Jackson, the Bills would finally have a legitimate receiving core.
9. New Orleans Saints
http://static.nfl.com/static/site/img/teams/NO/NO_logo-80x90.gif
James Laurinaitis - Inside Linebacker - Junior - Ohio St.
The Saints defence has a lot of holes and linebacker is definitely one of them. Laurinaitis should start at one of the linebacker positions right away for the Saints and should instantly contribute as one of the team's top tacklers. A talented linebacker like Laurinaitis can turn an entire defence around and that is exactly what the Saints will be expecting out of him.
10. Cincinnati Bengals
http://static.nfl.com/static/site/img/teams/CIN/CIN_logo-80x90.gif
Chris Long - Defensive End - Senior - Virginia
Chris Long is a high-motor, productive defensive end with great character and pedigree. The Bengals need to instill a new attitude into their players and the best way to do so is by bringing in players like Long who will lead both by example and verbally. Long is more than just a great character player though as he has great technique and the ability to make a handful of impact plays every game.
11. Philadelphia Eagles
http://static.nfl.com/static/site/img/teams/PHI/PHI_logo-80x90.gif
Sam Baker - Offensive Tackle - Senior - USC
Philadelphia loves to draft linemen early because they know football is won and lost in the trenches. Baker is a left tackle prospect who should be able to aid the Eagles' ailing tackle situation both immediately and in the long run. Donovan McNabb simply needs more time in the pocket if his team is going to be successful.
12. Houston Texans
http://static.nfl.com/static/site/img/teams/HOU/HOU_logo-80x90.gif
Malcolm Jenkins - Cornerback - Junior - Ohio St.
Houston's defensive line is really shaping up and DeMeco Ryans is making an impact for the linebackers. All they need now is a legitimate secondary, which all begins at cornerback. Jenkins brings great physical attributes and a playmaking attitude to a secondary that needs to step up if this team wants to take another step forward.
13. Arizona Cardinals
http://static.nfl.com/static/site/img/teams/ARI/ARI_logo-80x90.gif
Derrick Harvey - Defensive End/Outside Linebacker - Junior - Florida
Harvey is a big-time athlete with the numbers to back up his statistics. He's a likely candidate for the rushbacker position, something that the Cardinals will need if they want to continue their switch to the 3-4. Arizona's defence needs some work and in the NFL the pass rush is king, making Harvey a hot commodity.
14. Dallas Cowboys (from Cleveland)
http://static.nfl.com/static/site/img/teams/DAL/DAL_logo-80x90.gif
Justin King - Cornerback - Junior - Penn St.
The Cowboys need to bolster their depth at cornerback opposite Terrence Newman. King is an explosive athlete with all the makings of a top NFL cornerback. Also, this gives the Cowboys the versatility to move Anthony Henry to safety if the Ken Hamlin experiment doesn't work.
15. Chicago Bears
http://static.nfl.com/static/site/img/teams/CHI/CHI_logo-80x90.gif
Gosder Cherilus - Offensive Tackle - Senior - Boston College
The Bears have an aging and ineffective offensive line which is in dire need of a youth movement. Cherilus is a big road grader type who should help open up some holes in the running game which the Bears love to utilize. Although he'll likely never be a left tackle, Cherilus is as pro-ready as any offensive linemen and could step in at right tackle right away.
16. Denver Broncos
http://static.nfl.com/static/site/img/teams/DEN/DEN_logo-80x90.gif
Sedrick Ellis - Defensive Tackle - Senior - USC
Ellis is a disruptive force on the interior defensive line, something the Broncos need if they want to improve their porous run defence. Ellis' ability to get into the backfield and make plays for negative yardage will be critical for Denver. Plus, they love to rotate their defensive linemen so another capable body is always a big positive.
17. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
http://static.nfl.com/static/site/img/teams/TB/TB_logo-80x90.gif
Matt Ryan - Quarterback - Senior - Boston College
Jeff Garcia has done a nice job managing the game but he's not the long term answer at quarterback. The Buccaneers need somebody who can stretch the field and make some difficult throws. Ryan fits the bill nicely, plus he does all the little things which will have Gruden salivating over him.
18. Seattle Seahawks
http://static.nfl.com/static/site/img/teams/SEA/SEA_logo-80x90.gif
Jonathan Stewart - Runningback - Junior - Oregon
It's clear that Shaun Alexander is only a shell of his former self and at the least he'll need a legitimate runningback to split time with. Stewart is a very well-rounded back with an elite blend of size, speed, and power. Easing in Stewart by splitting the workload with Alexander could be very beneficial to both players, leading to the the resurgence of their stagnant rushing attack.
19. Baltimore Ravens
http://static.nfl.com/static/site/img/teams/BAL/BAL_logo-80x90.gif
Quentin Groves - Defensive End/Outside Linebacker - Senior - Auburn
The Ravens defence lost a top-notch player in Adalius Thomas to free agency last season and it shows. Groves is an elite pass rusher who should be able to fill the hole left by Thomas. Although their offence needs a lot of work still, a lot of that improvement will have to come from the development of their young players already on the roster.
20. Kansas City Chiefs
http://static.nfl.com/static/site/img/teams/KC/KC_logo-80x90.gif
Ryan Clady - Offensive Tackle - Junior - Boise St.
Kansas City needs to rebuild their offensive line to allow them to reap the full benefits of having Larry Johnson in the backfield. Clady is a left tackle prospect who should develop into a solid all-around player. With Clady, the Chiefs can continue to improve their offence which hasn't been the same since their loss to the Colts in the playoffs a few years ago.
21. Carolina Panthers
http://static.nfl.com/static/site/img/teams/CAR/CAR_logo-80x90.gif
Reggie Smith - Safety - Junior - Oklahoma
Reggie Smith played cornerback most of his college career but he's already being projected as a possible safety by some scouts. The Panthers have a gaping hole at safety which Smith could go a long way in filling. Smith has great cover skills which will be a nice change of pace compared to who they are starting right now at safety.
22. Detroit Lions
http://static.nfl.com/static/site/img/teams/DET/DET_logo-80x90.gif
Antoine Cason - Cornerback - Senior - Arizona
The Lions need to upgrade their defence if they want to continue making forward progress. With their high-scoring offence already in place, adding a cornerback to their weak secondary makes a lot of sense. Cason is a guy who could step in as a starter from day one and make opposing quarterbacks think twice about throwing to his side of the field.
23. Washington Redskins
http://static.nfl.com/static/site/img/teams/WAS/WAS_logo-80x90.gif
Malcolm Kelly - Wide Receiver - Junior - Oklahoma
Kelly is a fast-rising junior who could really see his stock climb with a good off-season. The Redskins need more depth at wide receiver and Kelly is just what the doctor ordered. Kelly's size will make him a great redzone target and he should be able to create mismatches in the slot which is exactly what they need out of him.
24. San Diego Chargers
http://static.nfl.com/static/site/img/teams/SD/SD_logo-80x90.gif
Rey Maualuga - Inside Linebacker - Junior - USC
The Chargers are a very solid team from top to bottom but could use an elite player at the inside linebacker position. Mauluga is a physical marvel who should see his stock increase after workouts and he is the perfect fit for the 3-4. The versatility and intensity Mauluga brings to the inside linebacker position will be appreciated by the Chargers.
25. Tennessee Titans
http://static.nfl.com/static/site/img/teams/TEN/TEN_logo-80x90.gif
Limas Sweed - Wide Receiver - Senior - Texas
Sweed and Vince Young are already familiar with each other after spending time together at Texas. The Titans need some playmakers on their offence to give Young some more options when passing the ball. Sweed is a big target who should find the endzone a lot with Young passing him the ball.
26. Jacksonville Jaguars
http://static.nfl.com/static/site/img/teams/JAX/JAX_logo-80x90.gif
Dan Connor - Linebacker - Senior - Penn St.
Jacksonville could use a standout linebacker. Connor could project to any of the three linebacker positions on the Jaguars and should see playing time from day one. Connor's well-balanced game and hard nosed approach to football make him a perfect fit for the Jaguars.
27. Pittsburgh Steelers
http://static.nfl.com/static/site/img/teams/PIT/PIT_logo-80x90.gif
Michael Oher - Offensive Tackle - Junior - Ole Miss
The Steelers' offensive line has been a staple for years but it needs an injection of youth and talent to remain at that level. Oher is an offensive tackle with a ton of potential who could spend a year inside at guard before he takes on the responsibility of a tackle. Wherever he ends up permanently alnog the offensive line, he'll be a big help to a football team that prides themselves in physically outmatching their opponents.
28. Green Bay Packers
http://static.nfl.com/static/site/img/teams/GB/GB_logo-80x90.gif
Steve Slaton - Runningback - Junior - West Virginia
The Packers have one of the worst rushing offences in the league which is clearly something that needs to be addressed in the off-season. Slaton likely won't be a full-time starter, but he could play lightning to DeShawn Wynn's thunder. The Packers will likely still use a runningback-by-committee approach next season but an explosive playmaker like Slaton will add an entirely new dimension to their offence.
29. New York Giants
http://static.nfl.com/static/site/img/teams/NYG/NYG_logo-80x90.gif
Keith Rivers - Outside Linebacker - Senior - USC
Rivers is a speedy linebacker with great range and the ability to get to the edge and rush the passer. The Giants have lacked consistent play from their outside linebackers and could really use a standout like Rivers. New York's pass rushing ability is already elite and with the addition of a top-end linebacker like Rivers, their defence could finally take the next step.
30. Dallas Cowboys
http://static.nfl.com/static/site/img/teams/DAL/DAL_logo-80x90.gif
Adarius Bowman - Wide Receiver - Senior - Oklahoma St.
The Cowboys are already an elite offence but they still need more depth and talent at wide receiver. Bowman is a big, physical player who has excellent production throughout his collegiate career. Bowman should step in as the slot receiver immediately and should be one of Tony Romo's favourite targets in the redzone.
31. San Francisco (from Indianapolis)
http://static.nfl.com/static/site/img/teams/SF/SF_logo-80x90.gif
Early Doucet - Wide Receiver - Senior - LSU
Doucet is a well-rounded receiver who has all the tools modern NFL teams are looking for in a wide out. Although he may not turn out to be a game breaker like Dwayne Bowe, Doucet should provide Alex Smith with a reliable target, soemthing Smith hasn't had enough of since he entered the league. The 49ers desperately need better production out of their wide receivers and the addition of Doucet should get them that sooner rather than later.
32. New England Patriots
