I don't bench anymore, I only do dead lifts and squats, but when I was 14 (5'4" 140) I did 180 once. The most I have squated is 420 and the most I have dead lifted is 235. My biggest accomplishment is definitely an 8 minute plank though this summer.

With the increase in technology, strength has become increasingly overrated. There are better ways of imposing your will, or doing work, or whatever it is you are going to be doing those muscles.

Me too. Oddly enough. I used to compete in high school cause I weighed about 170 but could bench well over 300 lbs. Unforunately my skills were pretty much limited to lifting. I played one year of D3 football, didn't like it, and haven't done much since. I could maybe bench 225 now. Maybe.

I play soccer, so i am kind of disporportioned.
I only rep 185 on bench (i weigh 180 give or take), but my legs are real strong.
I don't lift that much though, normally just do a bunch of soccer specific exercises/lifting and push ups.

I use creatine. It helps so much. I gained 10 pounds in less than 2 weeks with creatine and protein. I was working out crazy for the 5 months before I get 325 up. It was second semester last year when everything went down with my ex, so weights and basketball were my escape. I think that is better than having it be alcohol or weed. Unfortunately I sprained my ankle really bad and couldnt walk for weeks, and I didn't have a car so I got out of my habit and now I think my max is 275.
How many times can you rep 225? My highest was 16, now I am down to around 8-9.

From what I hear all creatine is is water weight, and people suggested Whey Protein instead.if u drink to much water while talking creatine, this can happen, if you want to get big, take NO-xplode. it has creatine and Nitros Oxide, which helps your muscle recover faster by increasing the blood flow throughout your body.

Protein and Creatine are two very different things...its not like they are two different supplements for the same thing.
Kind of ironic...I actually picked myself up some no-explode today at gnc...35% off.
I've been lifting on and off for the past 3 years or so. My max bench was about a 185 back in the day...i was around 135 at the time I believe...that was about a year and a half ago.
Picked up lifted again...been strong at it for the past couple of weeks...took about a 2 month break because i was super lazy. Right now my max bench is probably right up close to 200 which will be my big milestone.
I weigh 145 as of right now.

Ya it wasn't clean at all, the reason for that was I had weak triceps and I had difficulty pressing those last 5-7 inches. After a couple months of lockouts and triceps and I can rep that weight now with a pause at the bottom. Also changed the way I breathe and that seemed to help alot.

you can't say all protien shakes taste like ass. Thats like saying all Pizza taste like ass. The brand is key, and as far as whey vs. soy vs. any other type of protien, i dunno results are pretty inconclusive as far as which one is most effective.
I take whey protien right now just because i found a pretty cheap brand that doesnt taste too bad and has 24 g per scoop. As far as my bench, i ve been lifting for 3 years, i am a senior in highschool getting ready to play D3 ball, and i weigh 175 pounds and max bench out at 275. Hey DG, how long have you been benching, and how much did you start at?
I started at 95 pounds in the summer of 9th grade. I didn't really start until spring of 9th grade so it's been about 3 years.
I can't wait until I get 315, hopefully the huge increase I've been on recently continues. Damn no weight training today. :(

Yesterday I benched for the first time in about a year or so and had a nice 210 pounds. Sad thing is I am 40 pounds heavier, 2 inches taller and stronger than I was a year ago when I did 235  I even did 180 three years ago  Oh well, it is said you can only be good at two of the following three: Bench press, Dead lifts & Squats, I am great at dead lifts & squats :D My buddy that I work out with can bench 380 and this guy that went to my school two years ago is about 6'6 280 all muscle and benches 520!!!!!! I also saw this one dude repping out 120 pound hammer curls, then he looked over at me and said watch your feet without a hint of stress in his voice and dropped the damn weights. Some people are crazy mesomorphs.

i'm pretty much tailor made for bench press as im only 5-8 155and have "short arms", i like to say "proportional arms" though. i can do 8 reps of 225, although i think i'm going to start lifting more for tone than bulk.

Not only do I tend to think some of you are bullshitting on your max weight numbers, but I don't think its that good of a workout doing a bunch of maxes and calling it quits. I rather do a lot of reps with a lesser weight, and really get the blood pumping and the muscles working, rather then doing one rep of something heavy.

My work out for the past 2 months has pretty much been all cardiovascular and movement exercising to get in shape for the rugby season which started a couple weeks ago. I changed my diet and haven't eaten any chips, pizza or fast food since and I haven't drank pop or beer at all. I lost 3% body fat already and am down to 13% and 190. I plan to give up on my diet this week because well, going to my cousins place for march break with fake ID and no adults to even question anything. I have to say that eating healthily helps so much when you are getting in shape. I read about the 300 pound chick who changed her diet and walked every day and she lost 180 pounds. If you want to get in better shape, definitely go with the dieting and cardiovascular workout before you look to add bulk onto your frame, your spine will thank, I guarantee it, my back feels so much better now with this drop in weight.

I do, I really enjoyed my summer chilling out at the club house and drinking with my team mates and coaches and fellow ruggers, they don't even ID you at most rugby clubs I've been to since I got to U-18. That streak of about... 66 days will be long gone by the end of the week. you know how lame you sound, but anyways you just dont max out just anytime u want, the way we do it at my highschool during football off-season we start from reps of 10 in squat bench incline cling, and keep dropping until we get to sets of 3, then after we do that for a couple of weeks we max. Then after max you do it all over again.

Your one rep max is pretty much worthless. 225 as many times as you can is what you need to really get better at. This workout will help that tremendously. Power lifting being the best for football is basically a myth. Like I said at the end of my post, you have to cycle. Do that workout for 6 weeks, then heavy lifting for 4 weeks. If you continuously do either workout, you will overtrain and start to lose strength.

For max strength, yes what you recommend is better. I'm not arguing that. If you are going for power lifting, your way is much better. Football isn't power lifting. Football is explosion and endurance. With lighter weights, you are able to train your muscles to become more explosive.

strength and explosion correlates together. (increased relative body strength leads to increased explosiveness)
And endurance isnt as important as you think. Most plays last 10 seconds and then stops for 30.

I've played football just about my entire life, I know how much rest you get. It isn't cardio endurance that I am talking about. Your muscles fatigue quickly, even with all the rest.
But like I've been saying, you can't just do one or the other. You have to cycle how you do it, if you don't you will overtrain.

The max bench I have ever done was 315, but I am not much of an arms guy. I am somewhat short, so my short arms help me there, but I am really good at is lower body stuff. I used to squat 545, and I was one of the better guys on my team in the squat. There was one guy on my team that could wipe the floor with all of us though when it cam to squatting, he was up to 685 in his squat, and I had no chance of competing with that. I have no idea what I could do now, I haven't done much lifting in a while. I was just going to say that they are terrible for your body :D
In grade 9 this guy in my gym class was about 5'7" 140 and did 550, so you are doing alright though. Stop doing them though, seriously.
The leg press is also the worlds lamest exercise.

I hate football work outs they are totally the opposite of what you should be doing to get in shape for rugby pretty much.
well it all depends, I play nose gaurd in football and forward in rugby, squating is the best thing you can do for both positions.

true, squat is the most important, and with sqaut, most poeple get this way wrong, but technique is way more important than amount of weight, squat thenique is more imprtant than any other lift technique

I'd say dead lift technique is more important because half the people I see doing it do it wrong and another half don't feel it at all in some spots. On the topic of dead lifts and squats. One of the best full body training methods is a simple dead lift-squat-bench press routine. It covers almost everything to a degree and if you throw in some core training, stretching & cardio you are pretty much set.

Are Power Cleans easier or harder than Hang Cleans?

My two main lifts are Squat and Bench and just little stuff added in, if I get time I dead lift and yes you do those and your working just about everywhere. I see so many kids have bicep curls for the big lift they do, I make fun of every single one of those. Anyone that does bice curls are just doing it for looks. Just interested but what do you play in rugby? This is my first year and I'm really enjoying it, still learning but having tons of fun

My natural position is outside centre. I have started every back position though and played blind and open flank. Rugby is possibly the greatest game ever invented. If you know all the rules it is also way way way way easier than it looks and sounds.
The reason I am in love with squats is simple. It works out 240+ muscles and released hGH in some muscles as well. It works your hamstrings better than almost any other exercise if you are using enough weight and is the best by far if you don't want to work out every single individual muscle group. The same can be said about your hip flexors which are in my opinion at least, the most over looked muscle group.

Cable fly is one of the best for your pecs overall, but I don't like it that much, if you don't know what I am talking about -> http://www.muscletech.com/FEATURES/MUSCLEBUILDING_SECRETS/IMAGES/ATH_JayCutl_cable_fly.jpg
Sorry if you can't really tell what it is, but at least the real Jay Cutler is in the picture.

I've never liked any sort of machine. I just don't feel fatigued afterwards like I do with free weights. I've always considered them wastes of space and money

I'm getting weak again. I lost 8 pounds over the past week because ive been so sick I've hardly gotten out of bed. Losing that much weight and not being able to eat much means I can probably only get around 250 now.

im not inflating. id rather be 5'10ish and 180 and lift less than i can than being 5'6 and a half and 145 pounds and be able to bench 235 and squat 335.

For anyone that has trouble getting a burn in their workout I just discovered a new technique...it's been around for awhile...Both Coleman and Cutler have perfected it...the guys at Iron Man magazine supposedly invented it. But research x-reps. Instead of doing dropsets or supersets...x-reps are better to keep your muscle tissue's flex...and it also helps against the mental breakdown you face when hitting your last rep. After you hit your last rep..barely struggle...you change to a half rep...you go to your power point of your lift...and you do half sets...normally you do this at the end of your set...to finish with a nice burn...trust me...it's extreme.

For not being able to lift for a month, i still had my max at bench of 375, after doing 3X5 at 300. Probably not smart but i wanted a max for the coaches after i missed everything. Ive got this weird pain in my nerve on my right hamstring and it hurts whenever i Get up from sitting down, or when i put my head downwards the pain in my hamstring shoots out like a *****. When i was gett PT for my back, it randomly apeard and when she rubbed it, it felt like knifes were stabbing me, and she was only using her fingers. Im probably gonna go to a nuerologist in a week or two if it keeps getting worse, It might be cause im 294lbs and my spine isnt holding it well, and i may have to quit football if it continues, cause i can live with knowing i quit, but cant live knowing i have a perminate gimp thanks to football.
