I know that Grant does not wish to be tagged but it looked like contract negotiations have stalled.

The value of the franchise marker for a defensive end, which basically represents a one-year qualifying offer, is $8.66 million.
It's a lot of money to pay him if we can't sign to a long-term deal. He is an important part of our defense though.

Yup, I was hoping they'd get something long term worked out there's still time but it's looking more and more like he's going to get tagged.

Now to see if Atlanta does likewise, regarding Patrick Kerney. If so, then Dewayne White is the top FA Defensive End.

i'll kill everyone involved with atlanta's front office. or i'll brainwash arthur blank into rehiring dan reeves. that's probably worse.

hopefully the ravens don't tag AD, so maybe he can come to the Saints althought I would rather have Clements if I were to choose between the two.

I don't want to see the Saints shell out the money it would take for them to bring a player like Adalius Thomas to The Big Easy.

If they have the cap room, then it's a worthy move.

It's a smart move for us. He's essential to our defense and makes up half of one of the better d-line's in the league. Now, I'm hoping we get a long-term deal worked out fairly soon. At worst, if we do lose him... we'll get compensated for it.

As I said on the Saints thread... *sigh*

Yet another Darren Howard situation...

Kearney will be the best UFA defensive end, and probably will wind up in either Denver or St.Louis

I think he has a really good chance to end up in Denver.

It still irritates me that no one knows how to spell either his name, or Brooking. Who is oft-referred to as "Brookings," and "Kearney" respectively. Yes, I do think Kerney ends up in Denver, to play under Bill Johnson. I won't cry about it, if we draft either Anderson or Carriker.

Saints | Tag Grant as franchise player
Wed, 21 Feb 2007 08:29:39 -0800

Mike Triplett, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports the New Orleans Saints have designated DE Charles Grant as their franchise player, limiting his mobility in the open market next month. Grant, who was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this year, expressed frustration with the franchise designation. "It's not so much being disappointed (with staying in New Orleans)," said Grant, a first-round draft pick in 2002. "I've been here five years. I love Louisiana. I love the people here. You can't get better people than here in New Orleans. But other teams are interested in me. If you don't think I can play the game of football, you should treat me like a man and let me go." The franchise tag equates to a one-year $8.6 million tender and gives the club the right to match any offer he receives or receive two first-round draft choices from the new club as compensation.
