I really love Brett and what he did for us this year was amazing but am I the only one who kind of think it should have gone to Roger Federer?

yeah, when i heard Favre one, i thought to myself, "self, you really should go out and buy the issue with your #1 man crush on the cover." well, apparently, somebody got me a subscription to SI for christmas because the issue magically showed up at my house with my name on the subscription.

I R happy.

He will once Favre retires. Can't wait for the next decade and a half when Rodgers is tearing the Bears apart instead of Favre. :D

Dont be so sure of that I looked ahead 10 years, and Farve was still in the NFL. Infact here is a picture at pre-game:

Well Rodgers should be starting right now, but Favre will continue to morgage away the future. Before you know it, you're going to have to resign Rodgers before he's even started a game in the NFL.

Rodgers is signed through 2010 correct?

I think the Packers are content with Favre "mortgaging away the future" as he leads them into the playoffs as contenders. How is Rex Grossman working out for you guys? Brian Griese? Hell, Jon Kitna and Tarvaris Jackson are looking pretty good right now for you guys. Meanwhile, Rodgers will likely resign for a reasonable contract after next season, giving us the best young quarterback in the conference long-term. :D

I mean, I'd rather sign a guy long-term who has played with our team for years than sign some rookie to a huge deal who could be the next Sexy Rexy.

I dont think Rodgers re-signing with the Packers will be as easy as Packers fans would like it to be. Alot of teams could be interested in him.

There's a big difference between coming of the bench and playing great and being the full time starter and playing great consistently.

We've seen guys like Billy Volek and Charlie Batch come off the bench and look like all-pros numerous times. I'm not comparing Rodgers to those guys at all, but no way has he proved enough to put Favre on the bench. Favre has one bad quarter, (ok, absolutely horrible) and all of a sudden Rodgers is the better option because he came in and did what was expected of him against a team that wasn't prepared for his style of play?

Should Luke McCown be the starter in TB?

As Super Bowl contenders, the Packers would be foolish to bench Favre in favor of an unproven player in Rodgers.

this is what i was thinking... there are so many more players who've had a better year in their respective sport than Brett Favre, he just seems to be a charity pick. He might... might make a case for sportsman of the decade... but definitely not for this year.

They were going to choose Federer last year apparently. But they knew he couldn't make the award dinner or whatever they have so they gave it to Wade.

Yeah, I'm not really a tennis fan either but I think someone who dominates his sport as much as he does should deserve this award, even if tennis isn't a huge market in the United States and with SI. I don't know if this is entirely true or not but I thought I remembered hearing that Federer had never been on the cover of SI as the main piece. Quite sad if true.

I thought that at first, but when you look close at the situation it's pretty clear...

1. The Packers like him. They'll pay him.
2. When Rodgers resigns, he'll be the undisputed starter in Green Bay.
3. He knows the system and is coming into a great situation where he has a young core to grow with him.
4. He already lives here, has friends on the team, etc.

I can't see any way he leaves unless Favre decides to play like 3+ years.

Comparing players within the same sport is hard enough, even if they play the same position. When you start throwing in different positions, or worse, different SPORTS, you're fighting a losing battle.

Tiger Woods vs. Roger Federer. Who's the better athlete? There is no answer because they are incomparable.

Sure the majority of SI's market is in North America but it still has markets around the globe, and in the global market Roger Federer is easily more well known than Lord Favre.

True, but if those markets are so important in them choosing who or what they put on the cover then you would see more of soccer in general and people like Federer. We're just saying that they base their stories towards what Americans want essentially. Unless the SI in Europe and other foreign countries are different than the ones we see. I really don't know if they differ.

Can't speak for Europe but it's the same in Australia. I guess SI really isn't that multinational, it's not quite at ESPN level which has franchised into Australia (which is even more painful to watch then the American one)

SI and ESPN are pretty much non-existant here. I get my copy of ESPN about 2 weeks late imported at a Borders and I can't get my hands on SI at all. We don't get any American channels on our TV, we get the North American Sports Network which shows some college ball, but that's about all, watch NFL games on SkySports.

Don't underestimate the shape Federer is in, Any professional tennis player is ridiculously fit. I'm a pretty fit guy (train for rugby a hell of a lot) and after 1 set of decent standard tennis i'm stuffed, so to keep up a standard which is a million times higher then the one i used to play at for 5 sets is pretty damn impressive

No, he is, but SI isn't a huge worldwide magazine. The vast majority of its subscriptions are in the US.

The problem with SI now...they pick the person that everybody knows instead of picking the most deserving because he probably won't sell as many magazines. They use to tell us stuff we didn't know, not report the things we hear on ESPN everyday.

And Federer is definently more fit than Tiger, Tiger might be stronger and have bigger arms. But as far as endurance and cardiovascular fitness, Federer is one of the most fit athletes ever.

Brady won it in 2005. SI is very stingy about giving the award to the same person twice. In the 54-year history of the award, there has only been one person to win it twice (Tiger Woods: 1996, 2000).

Look I know there's some great guys in the NFL, but when is the last time you saw one of them get this emotional over an honor you probably never heard of? I haven't seen anybody on the internet or TV point this award yet. I was watching 1st and 10 today. And Marcellus Wiley is debating with Skip Bayless. They made up some B.S. story about Brett Favre wanting to play this week to continue the streak and is he getting a pass in the media for missing a day of practice? Wiley said who could have gotten out of practice to go to the SI banquet in NYC but him? What??? He missed one day of practice. I expect this from Bayless but what are these guys talking about? It isn't even a story. Nobody gives a damn about the Make A Wish foundation award he just got. The Sportsman of the Year is mostly about on the field, but some of it is off the field. Watch this and ask yourself what Favre cares about most. Not just out of these two awards but life in general.
