Not christmas....but exam time!
I hate exams..i have 3 of them this week. Which is actually a good number. Im not too worried about 2 of my exams (english, and politics) but i have an accounting exam on monday which really worries me. My study method is usually go over each formula/definition twice, and then rest. I do that about 3-4 times a day and that works for me. I can't cram for hours on end because it doesn't stick.
Anyone else have exams this time of year??

I have 3 and one of them is optional and if you take it it will only help your grade. One of the other finals will take the place of your lowest exam if your final is higher. The other exam he is allowing us to use two 8 by 11 sheets of paper to write as much notes as we can on it. :)

Why is that? Is it because of the really stupid answers or do you love sliding the scantron into the scantron grading machine?

Haha...I WISH we had a scantron machine. That said, I'll have to go with the latter. History exams are epically priceless when it comes to stupid BS answers because unlike math, students think that if they put some jibberish down it MIGHT be close enough to the answer that they'll get some credit.
I once had a student tell me that "thank God we won the Revolutionary War because if not who knows what language we would be speaking today".
This is the future of America folks.

It's funny, because I personally think I'm a total jerk but I get rave reviews on my evaluations. It's usually something to the effect of "Mike is so down to Earth, he's the type of teacher you'd want to have a beer with" when in reality I think most of them aren't worth the 20 minutes a day I think about how I'm going to endure their agonizing stupidity and vapid personalities.
It's like the more I mock them and degrade them the more they love me. Kids.... I think they assume because I'm closer to their age that I'm nicer on them, as if that makes any sense at all.
And trust me VYS, the kid was just a dolt. He also said in the same essay that the Santa Maria attacked the port of Boston. I think he was under the impression that the colonies fought Spain in the Revolutionary War, which would explain why most of our Eastern cities are named after places or people in Britain.
This is also a class in which they are allowed to make cheat sheets and bring them into class. And they know the questions ahead of time. Apparently he didn't think it important enough to check who the colonists were fighting against.

I'd much rather have an essay exam over scantron. I just don't do well with multiple choice. I'd much rather get a study guide for whats going to be on the test and know exactly what to study instead of someone saying Chapters 4-9 are on the test.
I think most of the kids performances these days are based on the level of instruction they are receiving and not so much on the kids themselves. While I'm not trying to stand up for the idiot kids the level of instruction they are receiving from kindergarten to high school is extremely poor.

While I don't disagree that primary and secondary education is largely a mess throughout most of the country, the fact that the student didn't even bother to prepare himself in the slightest for a test in which he knew the question and had the opportunity to write down the answers is utterly inexcusable. The only responsibility that I think faculty at the college level share for this type of negligance is that they don't come down hard enough on it. I consder myself doing a service to both the student and the community when I fail them. It saves the student time and money, it saves the state tax-payers money, and it (in rarer cases) actually motivates the student to put effort into his/her work on the next occasion. No amount or lack of amount of preporatory work will hinder a student's ability to walk to the library, check out a book, and read. To paraphrase the great Matt Damon from Good Will Hunting, people in the Ivy Leagues (and "lesser" public universities as the case may be) are spending extreme amounts of money for the same information that one can acquire for 3 dollars in late fees at the local public library.

I agree with you. I've always found the entire nature of exams somewhat contrived. It often plays out as a guessing game where the professor hides behind his/her infinite knowledge and the student must then guess at what the correct answer is.
Essays and assignments are a much better opportunity for students to find their own voice and opinions without the pressure of feeling like they must express the same ideas as their professor.
As for hating studying, however, I might suggest finding other ways to do it. Rather than studying right before exams (assuming you do) treat each day as a unspecified assignment in which you re-read over your notes, readings, etc., in preperation for the eventual exam. If you study in this manner you won't feel the pressure that you likely do now because you'll be much more prepared and will have spent your time more judiciously.

alright, the teacher doesnt teach lectures well. she just talks for about 2 hours without ever repeating herself, so if you really dont knwo what an important point is or not. also she is around the 15% on actually answering students questions. everytime she as a question that has to do outside of her notes that she brought she has no idea.

i love exams, i have never had any problems with them. I have found that as long as the teacher covers the material in class (and i attended class that day) i have little to no need to actually study the material. The biggest issue that most of the people that i know have is that they skip days of class, and then wonder why they don't understand the material. Truth be told, i go to a very small school, and have class sizes which are at maximum about 35...
The biggest reason that i don't mind exams is because i don't have to spend time outside of class completing it, and it also serves to make the class time go by faster.

hi, my 430 on friday says hello
oh, and you wanna talk about stupid...so my one class has a take home final, and naturally the class assumed we would get it the week before finals and have it due the friday before finals or the day/time of our final...but our professor doesn't understand that he doesn't have to follow the final schedule if he doesn't want to, so he says we have to come pick up our final prompt at the time of the final, which is tuesday at 730 am...now, it's a take home final, so I'm not really complaining, but come on, just give it to us earlier or at least email us the prompt

i like the way my school (MSOE) (it's in Milwaukee too) does the finals schedule... With regular scheduled classes, 8a to 5p, you either have finals from 8-10a or from 2-4p depending on when your class starts. It's a good way of doing things i think.

so what if you have class from 10-2? I have 3 classes in that time and 1 or 2 from 2-5, depending on the day...how would they break that up
we have finals 6 times a day...730, 945, 12, 215, 430 and on rare occasions 7...it sucks because there are so many times in one day that you could get screwed, like last semester I had 4 on the monday of finals, but if you have more than 3 you can get one changed...so I had 3 monday and 1 tuesday

so what if you have class from 10-2? I have 3 classes in that time and 1 or 2 from 2-5, depending on the day...how would they break that up
we have finals 6 times a day...730, 945, 12, 215, 430 and on rare occasions 7...it sucks because there are so many times in one day that you could get screwed, like last semester I had 4 on the monday of finals, but if you have more than 3 you can get one changed...so I had 3 monday and 1 tuesday
i guess i shoulda been clearer... i figured someone would have a question
Here's how it is laid out.
.........Monday....Tuesday..Wednesday..Thursday..F riday
8-10a....8am.........9am.........10am.........11am.. ...12pm
2-4p.....1pm.........2pm..........3pm..........4pm.. .....5pm
The Times under the days is the starting time of the class.
some classes have special exam times... a couple of my mechanical engineering classes are common finals, so they're at 11-1. Other times are later like 5:30... but for the most part that's it. Besides the one common final that i've had, all my other exams have been in one of these time slots.

I once stayed awake two nights in a row during the school week, I started hallucinating as well and would have the most realistic daydreams ever. Needless to say, it is probably the most high I have ever been without being high.

I have all this week then finals next week...because Iowa decided "hey, how can we **** students the most? Oh, we can make the semester a week longer" (we started at the usual date/when all other schools around here did)...so now everyone I know will be done this week, and then leave a week before I do and it makes our spring break one week later than everyone else's also, awesome.

We often hear people speak of "the Church" in the Middle Ages as if the Church was a monolithic entity, directing all actions in Christendom. Yet over the course of the semester we’ve talked about how Christianity was more complex than this, that it included a variety of individuals such as monks and nuns, bishops and the Pope, as well as the laity, and that it changed over time. Discuss the ideal of “the Church” and the ideal of a pope who leads Christendom (i.e. papal monarchy) put forth by numerous individuals. Also discuss when this ideal was closest to being realized (specific time period and events) and how it fell out of favor with the crises in the church, and society, in the Late Middle Ages.plus im running on basically nothing, pulled an all nighter for my test at 8am, ill just sleep in tomorrow, oh waitttttttttttt i have another one on the other side of campus at 8am. wooooooooooo

obviously the ideal of the church would have to do with it being a single entity that governs the actions of all of society, there would be only one supreme leader, and everyone would follow the same set of guidelines. It also may have to do with the ideal that everyone should believe the same things (i.e. only one "true" religion that everyone on earth follows)
I obviously can't tell you when the ideal was closest to being realized since i didn't take the class... but if you went to class (which you probably didn't very often since you don't know the answer to this) then you would be able to fill in the rest.

well when i was in high school, we had finals in the middle of January, after winter break which was only two weeks. But in America, most colleges (probably all public ones) give about a month for winter break. I however only get two weeks opposed to the four that all of my friends get.

I was writing my exam today...and i couldn't think clearly at all. Why? Because some guy sitting behind me had to clear his throat EVERY 2 MINUTES. And there was this other guy who kept using whiteout to correct his mistakes. Thats fine and all, but he had some weird sort of whiteout that was very creaky and made a loud noise, sort of like when you pull out the measuring tape from the tube. And he did this every 2 minutes too. Not to mention, his phone rang later on in the exam. Very very annoying.

I don't have exams anymore persay but everyday is a test when you have a pregnant wife. Contrary to what you may think marriage is like math. There is always a right and VERY wrong answer to every question.
Example
Question: What do you want for Christmas?
Right answer: I don't care as long as I spend it with you.
Wrong answer: Butt sex.

That sucks. Luckily I haven't had any professors whose done that. There is a difference between a tough professor who wants his students to really study and apply themselves, and those, as you put it, who are D'bags.

wow, i am so ******* pissed. my backpack got stolen on wednesday of last week and of course i am in 4 AP classes so i have no notes or anything to study of for any of my finals. then, in my one regular class, english, i lose all of my *** journals that i had to do for huck finn and we had to turn them in on friday. so, on thursday, i tell my english teacher that i lost all of my stuff, and he refuses to give me another paper with the journal prompts on there, so i am stuck in there the next day trying to do 10 journals, all a page long, in one 60 minute class period. i get 6 done, and so i fail the assignment. then today, i took the final, got a 123 out of 130, and i get an 88.9% in the class whereas if i had all my journals i would have had an A. this, combined with another bad final, brings me down from a 4.3 to a 4.0, now i am gonna have to retake *** ass english 11A over summer so that i can get an A in it, i ******* hate this doucebag english teacher

w000 so I got a 45/50, but my teacher, being the beast that he is, and being the joke that High School is, gave me a little "loan". He loaned me 1% to bring my grade to a 90, but next quarter he'll subtract 2% from my grade, so 92% for an A, etc.
Being a senior, this is awesome, because it is well known that 2nd semester doesn't matter. Hell yes.

I got my final marks
Politics & Culture- B (70-75%)
Communicative Writing- C+ (65-70%)
Marketing- A (80-89%)
Accounting- D (55-60%)
Definitely an off semester for me. I didnt put too much work into my studies this semester and my GPA dropped from a 3.4 to a 3.2 out of 4. Still though its a above-average GPA and i look forward to raising it..same thing happened last year. 1st semester i had a 3.2, i raised it to a 3.4 next semester despite a tougher schedule and more classes, which is the same situation i find myself in 2008. Just glad to be done and relieved my GPA didnt fall too far down. Now i really have to work hard in 08..

Failure is 0-54%. The marking standard of my school is a bit odd
55-60 % (D) 1.0 GPA
60-65 % (C) 2.0 GPA
65-70 % (C+) 2.5 GPA
70-75% (B) 3.0 GPA
75-80% (B+) 3.5 GPA
80-89% (A) 4.0 GPA
90-100% (A+) 4.0 GPA

Honors Pre-Calc B (counts as A because of honors class)
AP US history B ("")
English 11A B (see rant above)
Auto A (brings my gpa down cuz it is not an honors A)
AP Computer Science B (bombed the final and it dropped me like 7%)
AP Physics A
overall i only got a 4.0 GPA whereas i should have had a 4.3. at least when i pass the AP tests in may all of my AP grades for both semesters will be raised to A's which will raise my GPA this semester to 4.3 and i plan on retaking english over summer so that i can get an A in the class

True enough. I would take Toronto over York. York does absolutely nothing for me, I went there on a recruiting visit, and the only thing I liked was their campus. It was pretty neat, but other than that, the school as a whole does nothing for me. At least UofT is right downtown and you have a lot around, and any time Ive been down there, it was always a good time.
