A few local papers here in AZ, have brought up the fact that Edge might be traded this offseason to free up some cap space to resign Dansby and Pace and extend Fitzgerald, Wilson, & Boldin's contracts. What do you think we could get in return for him?
I was thinking a late 2nd or 3rd pick is all he would be worth now
The wild card in the Cardinals’ plans?
Edgerrin James.
Don’t be shocked if James is wearing a different uniform next season. His salary cap number will be $5 million, and Whisenhunt is mindful of the fact that his former employer, the Pittsburgh Steelers, have an undrafted free agent in Willie Parker who is the NFL’s third-leading rusher.
Now, the Cardinals aren’t going to be stupid and dump James if they don’t have a capable replacement. They saw how well that worked out with Pete Kendall.
But if Arizona can find a quality running back in the draft, moving James for salary cap relief would make sense. The Indianapolis Colts did it, and they won a Super Bowl with his replacement, Joseph Addai.

I really doubt a team would give up a second for him. He'll be 30 by the time next season starts and is nearing 3000 carries. Not to mention he's coming off the two worst years of his career.
Willie Parker isnt an UDFA...we resigned him ages ago
 Dude are you serious?

No more then a 3rd for him, maybe even a 4th or 5th.

He, if on the market, would be perfect in Atlanta. Be the consistent 3-7 yard gainer and block and let Jerious Norwood be the explosive player. I would love to have him here so we could hold off on drafting a runningback.

didn't warrick dunn say he was going to come back for another season?

That would take a paycut and a reduced role. I could see him in a Kevin Faulk from the Patriots type role but that is about it. He is ineffective as a feature ball carrier and gets payed a lot of money.
I am a big fan of the guy but he just is not getting it done.

I doubt you could even get a 3rd rounder for him now, especially with his price tag.

Didn't the Colts try to trade him for a 3rd a few years ago and not succeed?

I wouldn't mind him in a Bears uni for our 2nd third or our 4th. We could bring back a solid 2 back rotation with Benson and he does everything Benson doesn't.

You would have absolutely no speed in your running game with that 2 back set

With that price tag, and combined with the other factors, along with 3 potential solid backs in the first round (granted, all three have to declare), I find it unlikely that any team forks over anything for Edgerrin. If some team did, I'd imagine a 5th rounder would probably be the best case scenario.

Agreed, even if he restructures, he just not worth much anymore

He is only 29 and just had a 1,200 yard rushing season. He has never been a huge play threat but I don't think he has been too bad. He's a good all around back still right?
Oh, and he has a good shot at ending his career fourth on the all-time rushing list.

Can't see him being worth much at all. This figures to be a very strong RB draft, just can't see the team that gives up even a 3rd for a 30 year old back with the kind of mileage that Edge has.

You didn't see him before his knee injury because he used to be a bonafide homerun hitter. He really hasn't regained that same burst.
James is a good back for a zone blocking system as he has good vision and makes good lateral cuts. But 30 is the magic age for backs, especially those with his wear and tear.

I wonder if the Panthers are interested in bringing him in for one last hurrah a la Stephen Davis and ditching Fumbles Foster. He'd compliment DeAngelo Williams' boom/bust style real well. Only problem is I dont think he's worth much anymore, was overrated to begin with (by virtue of playing in Indy) and might not have one last hurrah in him

I wouldn't trade much at all for him. He's old, he's on the decline, he's expensive. Maybe a fifth-round pick, and that's if I was desperate, with lots of cap room.

Another good thing about Edge that most people over look is that he has only lost 19 fumbles over his 9 year career, thats just over 2 a season. We don't happen to pass to the backs very often in Arizona but he is still a solid receiver when asked to be.

I just looked at the stats of Edgerrin James and since after his rookie year his longest run is 43 yards. But I don't mind much considering he still produces and Atlanta Falcons runningback Jerious Norwood is a huge homerun threat.

Name some good zone systems.
Right now there are two zone schemes that run almost exclusive zone principles as their core running game. Houston, Denver and Indy both use almost exclusive zone blocking.
Obviously Denver's system has been the model for the zone system. But there are a few other teams who have used it with pretty good success.
From what I have seen, the Browns have used a lot of zone and have had pretty good success with Lewis this year. I saw KC using it whenever I saw them too, I am not familiar with their offense which leads me to believe that Kolby Smith has good vision for this scheme.
I know Carolina switched to a zone scheme this year. I haven't watched them but I know they haven't really had success in the running game this year which is kind of surprising because I though Deangelo would have been great for that type of scheme.

You can succeed without a first-round running back, but to assume you can do what the Steelers have done with Willie Parker shows no hubris. Edge is important for the Cardinals because he is used to winning and he hates losing, and that has rubbed off on his teammates. He's worth the five million.
