Probably none of you all have heard about TU24....
for those who dont know..... It is an astroid that will come close to making contact with the Earth.

It will be the closest atroid to pass by the earth in over 100 years.
The astroid itself measures over 500Ft tall
The astroid is supposedly supposed to make its way by at around 3:30am...
January 29th 2008

Please do not turn this into a gov thread, or a religious/doomsday thread.

BUT wat is all of yur opinions of this???

I have a link

Supposedly even if it doesn't hit it could cause Giant Storms and Earthquakes because it'll screw up electromagnetic frequencies.

how close is it supposed to be to earth? just because it's the closest ever doesn't necessarily mean it will be that close...but still kinda scary/weird to think about it

The chances of a hit are basically superlow, but like I said, it could still screw us up.

oh right, that's why it'll be weird when it happens...I just wanted to know if there's any estimates as to how close it will be, like miles or in relative comparison to say the moon or something...and also how visible will it be, just interested in that kinda info

chances are low....according to NASA, 0 chance

BUT if thats tru, why are all of their tracking part of their sites down?

its a small chance....1 in 250,000 possibilty.....

but this is outer space we are talking about

just read an artile that said it would be closest at 334,000 miles, in comparison i think it said the moon is like 256,000 miles or something like that. it will be so far away that it will be about 50 times fainter than the naked eye can see on a clear night.

thats tru....but there is a higher chance of it being a negatively charged astroid, that could actually screw up the Earth's charge, and the magnetic field

but don't you think that would be cool to see what happens?? like i know this is far fetched but you can't be scared something will happen when the negative charge could react somehow with whatever earth has going on and say it cure all cancer or some ****. that would be pretty sweet yes?? give me a little credit i did say it was far fetched.

yea well if people were warned about everything that had <1% chance of effecting our lives, we would hear a lot more and it would become quite annoying hearing every other day how asteroid X has .000000001% chance of hitting us, but still there's a chance...the fact probably is there is absolutely no reason to tell people about this who aren't interested

http://www.sundaymirror.co.uk/news/dailynews/2008/01/28/us-spy-satellite-is-crashing-to-earth-89520-20300741/

An out-of-control US spy satellite the size of a bus is expected to crash to Earth within weeks.

Us technicians say the satellite has lost all power and should plunge out of its orbit and re-enter our atmosphere at the end of February or the beginning of March.

It is not known where on the planet it will hit - or if it will burn up as it enters the atmosphere.

The satellite is feared to contain a significant amount of highly toxic rocket fuel. Experts say it could also contain extremely sensitive security information which America would not want falling into the wrong hands.

After doing some minor looking around, I doubt it will be negatively charged, so I think we're going to be safe. However, the prospect of something happening is exciting to think about; not that I wish harm on our planet but it's still fascinating.

Well, looks like the next 7 days might be interesting. It seems that the magnetosphere is being effected, hopefully we will get fun weather. My friend at Northwestern is telling me that it's in the 50s and about to drop to like 0 degrees in like an hour or so.
