I have 2 right now, but I got them both about 5 to 6 years ago. I plan on getting 3 more that all have meaning to me. However, my general rule for tattoo's is, I only get them in places that can be covered. There's no way I'd get any on my forearms, neck, etc.

I really would love to get a tattoo, but I don't want something just for the hell of it. Don't want anything generic either, I'd really like to figure out something meaningful that I could get and be cool with having on me but for the life of me I cannot. I'd be curious to see what everyone has to say about APS's questions as well.

yeah if i do decide to get one, it needs to mean something to me, which is hte problem i just cant find something that means enough to me now when im 19 that i want to be on my body for the rest of my life. and as to the above post, i would never get something i couldnt cover up with a plan tshirt.

Exactly, thats why the shoulder blade was great for me. Its not like I don't want people to see it, however I like for it to not always be showing.

I mean, you've got to think about the fact this thing is going to be on you for life. I don't want to be going into a job interview or something with a dragon on my neck and a pair of boobs on my hand, with "blow me" on my forearm.
terribletowel39
01-31-2008, 03:24 PM
well i've got the forearm tats. i just think of it as, i'm going to go into a interview with a long sleeve shirt on anyway. they won't see them. hell i work at a corporate countrywide office now and just wear a light hoodie with my short sleeves and have my sleeves up 90% of the time.
answering APS, no i don't regret them. and have no intention of ever regretting them. the ribs one hurts like a biznatch. i had a big bruise on my right bicep from me biting it so hard to take some pain away from my rib area as i was getting that one. don't let anybody tell you it doesn't hurt. like, "oh, its just an annoying feeling." no it hurts. the forearms wasn't bad at all, but the ribs felt like what i would imagine getting branded feels like, but just constantly.
also don't let what people tell you about the pain effect where you do want to get it. even though it hurts if you want it on your ribs or anywhere get it there. do what you want. don't let the artist or friends and family effect what you get put on you. its your decision and your body and like others have said, it will be there for the rest of your life.

yea if you are trying to stick with something that means something to you i would always stay away from tribal unless you are part indian or are indian. just my opinion. whenever i see tribal i always think that that tat can't mean anything to that person, they just thought it looked cool.
the shark is a good idea if youn love sharks. means something to you type stuff. depends on really the things you have experienced in your life. like i got hakuna matata on my wrist and i know most people jump straight to Lion King but its a Swahili term that means "there are no worries here" and from expeirences in my life thats how i try and live each day, worry free. not let the little things stress me out. stuff like that.

i would agree about the font. the actual drawing uses exagerrated lines and big strokes and what not and the font is not like that at all. which could be cool to have the differences but i would change it to go more with how the actual head and stuff is done.

they are raised above the skin for only a short time, the skins just irritated and most tattoos looked raised when they are fresh but once they scab over and heal they go back to normal. On a few of my tattoos there are parts that are partially raised still, but there's no technique to make them stay this way.

There is a way to permanently etch scars into the body which remain elevated. It's called scarification. Regular tattoos should not leave raises in the skin after they have healed.

Debating on whether or not to get it across my shoulders and down the middle of my back...or just to put it up on my shoulder blade.
Also there won't be a scripture on it...that is just on the image I found..I like the idea just can't think of which one I would want.

I'll be honest, I've never been too sure about getting tattoos in foreign languages. Its not that I would worry about getting the wording wrong on my tattoo (you do see that from time to time) its just that I guess if I'm getting tattooed I want the message to convey more to the people around me. Although some languages like Latin and forms of Arabic really look nice in general.

also, i plan on getting the nelson mandela your deepest fear quote tattooed on me somewhere. i just need to find a spot where it can fit comfotably...i odnt want it to take over, but i want it to be visible. it isnt quite as big as everyone thinks, and i edited out a few lines. Its one of teh few things i could stand to have on my body for the rest of my life...its inspiring.
also, i plan on getting the words "citius, altius, fortius" somewhere. Faster, higher, stronger. Also inspiring.

Same here, definately looking for something unique...Sometimes if you find an artist good enought hey will have some unique type fonts in their book, or they can free hand the font on paper, and have them trace the style on ur body in pen ink first, to see how it should look before they actually start to draw it on...I haven't found anything decent online either, which has been my holdup because I want some really sick font.

I've probably posted in here before but whatever, I have 6, really really starting to feel the itch to get another one (few actually), and it's only been about 6 months.
I'm fighting the urge to get some nautical stars done (okay I have one already but it doesnt count because....er...i dunno it just doesnt, it's just one). I know they're unoriginal and overdone. I cant really come up with any justification whatsoever apart from the fact I seem to be completely ******* obsessed with them. I am edging closer to getting a few muti coloured one's. I don't think i'll be able to get over it until they're done...
...anyone else have an irrational need for something they know is a bad idea or is it just me?

Seriously, team logos should be a no-no no matter how big of a fan you are IMO. I don't think too many ladies would appreciate that either. A lot of ladies I've talked to about that say they don't like those.

I have a bunch of tattoos.
-Last name running down my ribcage
-Authentic dogtags with accurate infor around my neck
- two half inch black bands around my right arm near the elbow(very simple and probably my favorite tattoo)
-my initials encased in crests on the back of each ankle(not finished yet as I want to shade them)
-a Hawaiian style sun on the center of my back
- My son's name and footprints on my back
-a blue tribal piece on my right arm(the only tattoo i have that I wish I didn't have)
I plan on getting a scene from the book Where The Wild Things Are done as a half sleeve soon. I am also going to get the Maryland and California state flags on my stomach, flanking my bellybutton. I also want to tattoo my feet but I don't know what to do.

I don't have a tattoo but a couple of my friends do. They rubbed it with some special lotion and kept it out of the sun or water. I think you got it at a good time so that it can heal rightt before the summer. Someone who has a tattoo would be more helpful but I more or less tried to bumped this thread.

I'm kicking around getting a baseball on my upper arm, not a clean one but kind of an old looking torn up ball. I used to play back in high school (pitcher) and I ended up screwing up my elbow and I've still yet to figure out what's wrong with it, but I still love messing around a little when I can and it's definitely not something I'd end up regretting. Maybe a little weird, but I'd rather that than getting a team logo. Nothing against those of you that have them, just not my style.

Question for everyone with a tattoo--what did you guys do to take care of your tattoos for the first two or three weeks?
For mine I use Vitamins A&D Skin Ointment and it works great, whatever you use just make sure you don't grease them down too much, you want a light shade of whatever it is over top and that's it, if you cake it up and have grease splotched everywhere your tat won't show up as well.
Don't scratch it, just wash over it like normal, and apply some ointment out the shower because that's when it gets dry and will start to crack...Once the top layer will start to peel don't scratch at it, once that washes off completely you won't need the ointment anymore, but I am consistent in the first few days and all my show up pretty clear.

About an hour after you're out of the chair take a shower but try not to let the water hit the tatt directly, use a non perfumed or coloured soap and wash it carefully.
Pat it dry and apply either tattoogoo or bepanthen (available everywhere) for about a week, after that it'll start to flake a little bit (should definitely not scab over) once that starts, use a plain old moisturising lotion on it for another week or so and it's fine.
Don't go swimming, don't put it in the sun, NEVER scratch it, if it itches real bad, slap it a bit.

If you can somehow find a dude that can freehand it will make it alot easier, it took me a long time to find one, but if you tell him you want a sleeve on your right arm he'll just ask what type of things you want on it. So you tell him a Cross, some angels, sun and sun rays shining down, maybe some hell references at the bottom, and he'll freehand it on your arm in pen ink to see how it turns out, what else you want, what you want different, things like that.
It's alot more complicated if you can't get it done that way, because some dudes aren't creative at all, and I'm not the greatest at coming up with tattoo concepts myself but it'll usually come out original when you can tell a guy what you want like that.

Got my first tattoo on Friday, "Exitus Acta Probat" on the center of my back below the collar line.

you'll want to invest in a back scratcher

sooo I'm pretty sure I'm going to get my tattoo in a week or so, depending if the doctor says I can drive or not.
that being said, yes, I'm more than likely getting the classic block, scarlet "R".
NOW, I'm not sure where to get it though? thinking around on my back right shoulder. idk yet.
oh, and how painful are they? because I can deal with pain, but i'm pretty damn terrified of needles, like shots at teh doctor's office...:(

I fell asleep once while getting one of my sleeves tattooed...
Another time the tattoo artist and i had to take a break because we were laughing too hard while a girl down the hall was screaming her lungs out....
That probably doesn't help... does it?

hahaha, not really.
then again, i have a high pain tolerance, I mean I played a whole lacrosse season on partially torn tendons in my ankle and like a popped achillies all messed up stuff like that. I just hate needles like flu shots. I told the doctor I'd rather get the flu than the flu shot...

It depends on where you get it.
I got a big one on my ribs and it hurt REALLY bad. I have a few on my arms and it wasn't anything. Not to scare you further. But I have heard shoulder blades are one of the more painful areas. Just because it will be a needle on straight bone basically.
But depending on where you get it. It will hurt. For my ribs one, it hurt so bad I was biting my bicep to take some pain away and i had a baseball size bruise on my bicep for like a week after that.

oh yea, that's true. damn. I'm just not sure where to get it? I can't decide where it'd look best. Maybe a little lower so it's not on pure bone, but i don't want it to look stupid.
How long do they normally take? I mean I'm going to just a plain block, red R. It won't be massive either

If you go with like a 4 in x 4 in R i would guess about an hour.

I have 4 and i would say that wouldn't take longer than 30 min. Just an outline with a solid red fill wouldn't take long at all.

Yea, you are probably right. I was just trying to think about how long it took to do mine and guess. Depending on the artist. 30-45 sounds better. A good artist will go over the red more than once. Just so he doesn't miss any skin.
A Perfect Score

Yeah, a regular R wont take any time at all. Seriously, the pain thing is overrated. Anyone with the slightest bit of mental determination can block out that dull pain that comes with it.
I keep trying to get more tattoos, but I never have any ******* money.

When I was getting my back tat, the parts that hurt the most were the shoulder blade and the spine. There were two different types of pain with the shoulder blade--one was the burning, chalkboard-scratching pain as it went over the bone and the other was the deep, dull pain going over the muscle. The problem with the muscle over the shoulder blade is that it seems to spasm on its own, causing the needle to go deep into the skin. This pain wasn't nearly as bad as the pain going over the bone though.
That said, neither types of pain were intolerable to any degree. They were just different.

Agreed. I also have one on my back and it covers part of the shoulder blade. For being my first tattoo the pain was a little bothersome but not bad. In some parts its it was rougher than others.
Now having a total of 4 its nothing at all. I find it interesting that your mind plays tricks on you though. When i was getting the one on my chest done it felt like he was tattooing my throat.

I am terrified of needles as well, but with my tattoo, I brought my IPod and just listened to that the whole time. It was on my arm and didn't really hurt, but it goes numb after a while. Mine took about 90 minutes, maybe 2 hours.

bump because I want a tattoo so bad. Never been a big tattoo guy but this one has been dominating my thoughts so much lately for at least a year now. I come from a fairly conservative christian family that I love very much, and would probably hate to see me with a tattoo, which is my biggest discouragement, but I can't get it out of mind.
I want Memento Mori tattooed on my upper arm as my daily reminder. The inspiration comes from reading lots of Tolstoy plus the bible scripture from John 12:24: Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. I know I want it badly, but it would upset my family...so is it worth it?
Any serious thoughts here on this matter?

Thiago Silva's sleeves look bad ass. I don't really want a tattoo, but if I ever did get one it would be a full sleeve for sure.

ok, so I'm really thinking on making strides to get my first tat. aiming for a shoulder blade. Looking for help on a font. Any suggestions? going for some sort of script writing. the quote? from bouncing souls: "Find what's good, and make it last".
any advice or comments? just seeing what it's like and what I need to do for it.

I'm thinking about getting this tattooed on my chest, centered right under the nape of my neck:
http://org.elon.edu/tridelta/Delta_Delta_Delta_-_Elon_University/Welcome_files/StJude_logo_1_1102.jpg
I have 3 scars of my chest: one right above my right pec, one above my left pec, and one right in the center of my chest. So if you add the tattoo's location and drew lines connecting the tat and center scar along with a line connecting the left and right pectoral scars, you'll make a cross.
Yay or nay?

I think really personal tats like that are the best. Way better than some random Japanese fish or a deck of cards or whatever.

I was thinking on getting a pair of these on my shoulder and chest area. One that says my mother's name and the other with my sister's name.

The summer after my senior year in high school my catcher was 2 years younger than me but he was my best friend. Call him and introduce him to everyone as my little brother. I set the state record for consecutive innings without giving up a run, and I had never thrown better than when I pitched to him, just one of those things where you just click with a certain teammate. His parents were like parents away from home and treated me just like their own son.
After his senior year in high school he got drafted by the Cubs but did not sign I tried and tried to get him to come to my school but he decided to go to a Junior College in Twin Falls Idaho with the intent to go for one year and get drafted higher so that he could sign. 2 weeks down at school, he was at a party and a kid tried to pick a fight....when my brother and his friend left the party they were followed. They were scared to death and reached speeds as high as 100mph....the kid following them bumped their back end and sent them over a rail....
Never wanted a tattoo....never really had the desire to get one. But when he passed I knew how much he meant to me and how much his involvement in my life helped me get to where I am today and to become the person I am today. We always called ourselves the dream team because for that whole summer we were unbeatable.

It didnt turn out as good as I wanted it too but Im not complaining because I know how much it means to me. It was something that I didnt get for people to see so thats why I got it on the inside of my bicep....
