Will we see Randall Cobb for this game?
What does he have, hamstring issue? Has to be a "strain" of some kind.....

His knee's are banged up... they called it a "contusion" which is just a bruise. If you remember the Cardinals game he returned a kick late in the game where a guy basically speared him at the knees with his helmet to tackle him. I have seen players tackling like this more and more often and I think the league needs to do something about that BS. My coaches never asked me to go out there and spearhead a guys knees with my helmet...

The last thing we need in the league are more rules against how you can and can't hit a guy.

Want to pipe in on Brad Jones too. I'd be fine with him getting the boot. He just hasn't done much of anything. It's not like he has some insane potential we're waiting on either. Might as well give one of these guys, like Lattimore, a chance.

Exactly. Jones hasn't done anything this preseason and he gets hurt too often. I think he's as good as gone. I think So'oto is the one who makes the team, however. Lattimore will be signed to the PS. He's got potential, but he's still too little right now. Put him on the PS and have him bulk up

I disagree here, we're thin at LB and Jones was taking some reps at ILB earlier in camp. At this point, with Zombo out, Jones value has increased. I think he could be cut though if they place Zombo on the PUP and activate him.

Here's what I would do with the final 53.

Offense 26
QB: 3 Rodgers | Flynn | Harrell
RB: 3 Grant | Starks | Green
FB: 1 Kuhn
WR: 5 Jennings | Jones | Nelson | Driver | Cobb
TE: 5 Finley | Taylor | Williams | Crabtree | Quarless
OL: 9 Clifton | Lang | Wells | Sitton | Bulaga | Sherrod | Newhouse | Diet-Smith | Schlauderaff

I like Quinn Johnson, but he's not as good of a football player as any of the five tightends. Maybe Thompson should try to find a good enough deal to warrant trading Quarless or Crabtree.

Don't know who goes in the final two offensive line spots, as I don't believe anyone has really stood out among EDS, McDonald, Schlauderaff, Dominguez, Sampson.

Defense 24
DL: 6 Raji | Pickett | Neal | Green | CJ Wilson | Jarius Wynn
LB: 9 Matthews | Hawk | Bishop | Walden | So'oto | Smith | Brad Jones | Francois | Lattimore
CB: 5 Woodson | Williams | Shields | House | Lee
S: 4 Collins | Burnett | Peprah | Bush

So'oto has not only earned a roster spot, he's earned a good deal of playing time. The fifth corner spot is a bit of a toss up, but I'd stick with Lee.

Special Teams 3
Crosby | Masthay | Goode

Practice Squad 8
Tori Gurley
Sampson Genus
Ray Dominguez
Genus Sampson
Lawrence Guy
Ricky Elmore
MD Jennings
Josh Gordy

IR
Frank Zombo (If not, Lattimore to the PS)

Try to Trade
Chastin West
Crabtree/Quarless?

Crabtree has a better chance to make the team than Quarless; he's a superior blocker and plays special teams...Finley and Williams have a somewhat similar skill-set to Quarless and they're locks to make the team, do we need three guys like that? especially a third one who doesn't excel at anything over those two?

I understand what your saying... but seriously leading with your helmet into someones knees??? Not sure if you ever played football, but I was never taught to tackle that way.
Bingo.
Nobody teaches to use the helmet as a weapon, but because it's rock hard, like armor, these punks these days throw the side, back of their helmet into anything... sometimes the front of their helmet. It causes injuries, recklessly.

One day, they will go back to softer helmets. Maybe not the leather ones of yesteryear, but soften the exterior of the "shells". Maybe that will get these maniacs on defense to stop using it as a weapon.

DJ Williams took the place of Crabtree last night on kickoff coverage, and promptly we saw a 50+ yard return to his side, by Javier Arenas. These things don't get pointed out by the analysts, but the coaches know about them.

Special teams is huge.
Crabtree stays.

Borel, Brandian Ross, Schalauderaff gone so far. One of the jsonline writers had a 53 drawn up where we only keep eight linemen. While that seems a bit risky, I like the idea. I don't believe there's a 9th lineman that has earned his spot as much as guys at other positions.

Why would we ever keep 5 TEs?

They like what Taylor/D.J. Williams have done and Crabtree is still the best blocking TE on this team. Quarless has also looked good

they just released Chastin West, Tori Gurley and Kerry Taylor and are apparently going with 5 WR. Might be a good chance they go with 5 TE to

Whoa, reports are that the Pack will end up keeping Lattimore and Francois. With So'oto being a lock...that might mean Brad Jones gets cut. I didn't like what I saw from Jones, not to mention he's hurt a lot, but I didn't think they'd keep Lattimore over him at this stage. Guess the Pack didnt want to lose somebody like Lattimore, who shows a lot of promise but is veeeery light

Kind of pointless to carry 6 WRs don't you think? If this was 3-4 years ago I'd be excited. But we have 4 legit starting calibur WRs and 1 very promising rookie. I'm more excited about our TEs and the matchups that they'll create.

Actually really like the roster move if we can get Harrell on the PS. I had said that that's what we should do about a month back, before people started calling Harrell a lock. Keeping three QBs on the roster doesn't serve much of a purpose with the new gameday rules. Cobb should be a good emergency #3.

BloodBrother
09-03-2011, 06:51 PM
I liked him. Good lead blocker, lays out some punishing blows. Doesn't offer much else(receiving, running) He is a better fit on a power running team, so I think he'll fit in well in Tennessee with them having CJ2K. I think it's a good pickup for the Titans

Packers like more versatile players and are obviously a passing team, so they didn't have much use for him. Didn't fit their style and just wasn't a good fit here

Yep the O-Line is the major problem atm. I see it being more like the first half of the 09 season because they havent looked good at all :/

I'm not sure, but it is possible that Gordy isn't eligible for the PS...

Plus what is the deal with everyone's love affair with Gordy? He made that one INT in the 1st preseason game, which was pretty much thrown to him. After that he never really stood out or made any noticeable plays. I would have picked Bush/Lee over him for the simple fact they know the defense better in a year with a shortened offseason.

I never got that either. He'd be a developmental prospect at best. He didn't stand out like Shields did last year. However he was PS eligable and they choose not to keep him which says alot of what the coaches thought of him.

I wouldn't be suprised to see both West and Gurley claimed early on during the season which is probably why they kept Borel. Gordy just doesn't seem to have the instints to play in the NFL so I'm not really concerned about it.

One of the more intriguing cuts to me is Everette Brown. I realize he floundered as a DE in the 4-3, but I'd like to see what he could do standing up in a 3-4. Was he setup to fail in Carolina, or does he just not have it?

Character doesn't seem to be an issue from what I'm reading. Something must be up though, because he was only scheduled to make $480K this season and yet he cleared waivers.

From a post a couple days ago.... Did this happen? Ive seemed to have missed it... Any numbers?

Green Bay - Guard Josh Sitton's five-year contract extension with the Green Bay Packers averages $6.75 million, the Journal Sentinel learned Tuesday.

The new deal, signed Friday, makes Sitton the seventh high-paid guard in the NFL on the basis of average per year. Sitton is tied with linebacker A.J. Hawk for sixth place on the Packers' payroll.

Sitton was entering the final year of the four-year contract that he signed as a fourth-round draft choice in 2008. Now he is under contract to Green Bay through the 2016 season.

Sitton's deal is worth $33.75 million in new money, including $8.9 million in guarantees.

His cap salaries are $4.896 million this year, $4.85 million in 2012, $5.55 millon in 2013, $6.4 million in 2014, $6.75 million in 2015 and $6.6 million in 2016.

Sitton received a $6 million signing bonus and roster bonuses totaling $7.15 million. His roster bonuses are $2.9 million this year, $2.4 million in 2012, $650,000 in 2013 and $400,000 in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

His existing base salary of $1.2 million this year was lowered to $700,000, presumably for cap purposes. His base salaries will increase to $950,000 in 2012, $3.4 million in 2013, $4.5 million in 2014, $4.85 million in 2015 and $5.9 million in 2016.

Sitton also will receive a $300,000 workout bonus each year.

Unlike the contracts of some recent blockbuster resignings, none of Sitton's bases were guaranteed.

Tramon has a shoulder bruise, but McCarthy will have more info on Wed. Initial tests determined it was a bruise which McCarthy said was a "positive" report

Sounds encouraging, but McCarthy seems to always do stuff like this, only for us to find out days later it's worse than before. I mean, Mike Neal was "day-to-day" after his injury to his knee and he's missed over 3 weeks including the first game

The game on Thursday was the greatest day ever! So much fun. First off, the pregame, tailgaiting, and drinking from morning till kickoff was a blast....the atmosphere outside the place was insane. I was in cheesehead heaven. It was crazy packed, had non stop fun. Even met Mark Murphy outside the stadium and took some pics with him.
Also got to see the HOF again, try on a SB Ring, do the whole Lambeau experience that way.

Then the game....wow! What a blast, the atmosphere in that place was unbelievable. Makes seeing Packers/Lions in Detroit (only other games I've seen) feel like a peewee game. It also helped that I was in an awesome section with great Packers fans (110), and that the game was a classic. I even got to polka in the walking aisle to Roll out the Barrel with the lady sitting next to me. And the Pack won on the final play right in front of us. Best birthday I've ever had.

Long story short, Pack fans from out of state (or country like myself), go to Lambeau. I've only done it for TC before, but you've gotta see a game there. Unreal! Can't wait to go back.

Im more worried about Shields getting an extended roll. Brees was looking his way all game. He looks a step slower than last year.

Oh, and seeing it in person, Grant looks so much worse than Starks. He was hesitating to make cuts, and just doesn't seem as explosive. Starks was bigger, faster, and made his decisions quicker. He's clearly the best back on the team right now.

Also, AJ Hawk covering Sproles was a joke. He also appeared way too slow. Didn't have the greatest game, though that PI call was BS, it was actually a sick play.

J-Mike88
09-10-2011, 09:25 PM
Hawk did interfere with Sproles without question, so that was a good call.
But that was a great play by AJ regardless because it saved the touchdown.

Hawk cannot be in there though, against receivers like Sproles in open space. That's asking someone like Dirk Nowitzki to cover someone like Chris Paul.

That gameday experience was just like a Super Bowl.
Except warmer than the s*** I dealt with in February here in Dallas!

Getting an extra 3 days off, and then Carolina, is perfect if Tramon has to miss some time.
We could use him to cover Brandon Lloyd in a few weeks, but won't need him to win that one.

We have to beat Chicago though. Well we don't have to, as we lost there last year (to the refs)..... still, gotta get a #1 or #2 seed to get the bye this year.

Who will have more receiving yards for us this year: Jones or Cobb?

I'm not too worried. Our entire secondary looked a step slow and the Saints have some burners at WR. I think it shows alot that Shields is becoming our #2 CB and he did make some nice plays and almost came away with an INT.

I think Shields will bounce back, but he needs to work on his jam at the LOS. That TD to Henderson was almost identical to the TD he gave up to Wallace in the SB. He has excellent speed. Against a lot of WRs he can make up that gap if he misses, but against WRs like Henderson and Wallace he can't afford to wiff on his jam like that.

I liked them getting Jones. Roddy White is going to be 30 years old and his average per catch has dropped the past 3 seasons. Jones gives them a big, physical, downfield threat and long term option for franchise QB Matt Ryan.

Personally, I don't think Julio is that Randy Moss, Calvin Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald type of WR prospect who is a guaranteed stud at th enext level at WR.

I've seen a lot of WRs with Julio's abilities who never pan out as stars in the NFL. A lot of it depends on attitude however, and if he has that, the desire, the strong work ethic, perhaps. But they really wanted AJ Green and this was their Plan B there. WRs bust rates are as high as QBs up there.

I think Jones is going to be like a Reggie Wayne. For their system I thought that he was a better fit than Green. Although I'm sure they would've loved to land the hometown kid.

On another note, I've been thinking about Bulaga vs. Dez Bryant seeing Bryant has the making of a stud receiver and seemingly fell to us last year. I have to say that I'm thoroughly pleased to have Bulaga and his play/improvement this season just backs up what I think the majority of us believed when we took him over Bryant. I don't think Bulaga is getting his due in helping anchor the right side of our line.

I agree, glad we didn't take Dez.
We have blue-collar guys at WR, not primadonas. And we have the best set of WRs 1-5 in the NFL.
Adding an ultra talented head case like that would have hurt.
Not helped.

I wanted Jerry Hughes over Bulaga and felt then, and now, that he would have been a beast of a standup 3-4 OLB opposite Matthews. A Lamar Woodley to our Matthews.
As it is, Hughes is struggling with his hand on the ground for Indy and I believe was inactive Sunday.

Aaron Maybin, Vernon Gholston, Everette Brown all have bombed miserably and were guys rated ahead of Matthews as OLB prospects in 3-4 defenses.
Did NE sign Brown?

It's amazing we have another very talented DL who seems to be made of marshmallow. Strong "looking", but brittle and always somehow finding a way to have something injured/broken. It's amazing that other guys like Kevin Williams was able to play like 8 straight years without getting any injuries like these 2 "men" got time and time again.

I agree it would be smart to sit Tramon if he's not even close to 100%.

The only thing that can stop the Packers is the Packers themselves. Rodgers is definitely up there with Peyton and Brady and the defense looks solid on paper.

Yeah exactally, he was key in helping keep together our offensive line late last year.

I see it like when there was talk about us trading for Randy Moss when he was still with the Raiders. Sure he would've been nice to have but it would've stiffled Greg Jennings growth.

I didnt think it was PI watching it live and thats not because I was being a homer either. It looked like a great play... Sproles is short to begin with and had has knees bent. It says right in the rule book:

Actions that constitute defensive pass interference include but are not limited to:

(a) Contact by a defender who is not playing the ball and such contact restricts the receiverís opportunity to make the catch.

(b) Playing through the back of a receiver in an attempt to make a play on the ball.

(c) Grabbing a receiverís arm(s) in such a manner that restricts his opportunity to catch a pass.

(d) Extending an arm across the body of a receiver thus restricting his ability to catch a pass, regardless of whether the defender is playing the ball.

(e) Cutting off the path of a receiver by making contact with him without playing the ball.

(f) Hooking a receiver in an attempt to get to the ball in such a manner that it causes the receiverís body to turn prior to the ball arriving.

And thats what Hawk did, he played the ball through the receiver.

Packers don't have a good track record when it comes to neck injuries, either(Gary Berry, Tim Lewis, Sterling Sharpe, Terrence Murphy). If his career is over...what a huge blow. He was going to be a staple of the defense for the next 5-6 years most likely.

Here's the only clear update we have on what the injury may be

Good news for Collins, though, is that he does not have stenosis, according to Herman. Stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal column, and players who have it and sustain neck injuries often have to retire.

Disc problem suspected for Collins (http://blogs.greenbaypressgazette.com/blogs/gpg/insider/2011/09/19/collins-didnt-break-neck-or-back-disc-problem-suspected/)

No stenosis is good, as that would have definitely been a clear cut career ender.

more from Collins agent

Nick Collins' agent, Alan Herman, said Collins will see spine specialist at Hospital For Special Surgery in New York City later this week.

More from Alan Herman on Collins' injury: "We understand there was some disc involvement but we don’t know what extent. "

Hopefully they get good news regarding "to what extent" the disc issue is

Exactly. This is bullschit. I think LeRoy Butler had to retire due to a neck thing as well.
I feel awful for Nick.
I like Peprah and he filled in great last year. But it was for Bigby or Burnett. WITH COLLINS.
Replacing Collins is impossible.
He's so important to us. So underrated.
He was the most underrated player on our team.
I talked to some people today, Viking fan even, who barely knew who Collins was.
Thought he was a ****ing linebacker. I said the guy returned a *****pass for a TD in the Super Bowl for God's sake!
He made Pro Bowls, but because he's a classy guy, no dreadlocks, not on the Steelers or Patriots or Ravens or another East Coast team, or Dallas Cowboys, he gets no pub like he's earned.

He is our Polamalu or Ed Reed, and we all have seen how badly their defenses dropped off without those guys. Same with the Colts defense when they had a healthy Bob Sanders. It was good. Since he always got hurt, their defense sucked.

Perhaps Woodson can play more of that role, and they can have Peprah do more blitzing. He's strong as bull.
Chastin West was signed off the practice squad by the Jaguars. It was expected that a team would end up getting him. Well deserved for him
Sucks to lose Chastin. Good for him.
But now he's going to a horseschit passing offense, and might be catching passes from Luke McNown or else Blaine Gabbert.
He's going to miss Rodgers so badly soon.

If things get bad, Woodson could perhaps make the shift to safety. This is probably the most extreme situation and lets hope it doesn't have to happen. Only way this would even work is if Davon House gets it going and can help down the stretch as a nickel/dime back, because as of right now, if Woodson DID make a shift to safety...it would mean BUsh would be on the field and we do not want that

the other more likely scenarios are that they bring Underwood or Levine back...or perhaps shift Bush back to Safety(this depends on House's development as well...unless the Pack are fine with Lee taking BUsh's spot at CB)

obviously, I want House to stay healthy and step up because I don't trust Bush or Lee

One thing is for sure, they can ill afford to lose anybody else in the secondary. Tramon's injury only being a bruise is huge right now. Imagine if that sh*t was more severe along with Nick going down. So fed up with the injuries

The fact that we retained Peprah this offseason is now huge. If we didn't have Peprah, Collins' injury would probably result in a major collapse of the secondary. Peprah is a capable starter who isn't going to make too many mistakes. I'm not worried about him. What we need to have happen is Burnett to step up his play his play to offset some of what we lose from Collins. Burnett can give us some of the playmaking ability Collins had, but the big question is whether he can eliminate mistakes. Last year when Barnett went down, Bishop came in and was an improvement. I can't imagine that happening with Collins/Burnett, but we need him to get to a much higher level of play by the postseason.

Underwood will probably be brought back considering how thin we are now.

Sharper worked out for Denver, but hasn't signed yet.
No Pro-Bowlers are out there on the street, and he got burnt plenty when he was young and faster.
But he makes plays too..... if our pass rush returns to form, I think he could be a ballhawk back there, IF NEEDED.
Hopefully Burnett & Pep stay healthy for the remaining 17 games. But odds are strong they won't.

Where's Levine, #34 for us in training camp?

These suckers have pulled out 2 games in which they trailed big. First week at Tampa Bay, and yesterday at Minny, down 20-0 starting the 2nd half.

They have a cupcake 3rd place schedule, to our champion schedule.

Remember, we lost at Detroit last year with Stafford out injured. They're a ton better now, and more confident. We are better as well of course. They will be a tough out all year long.

Here's their remaining schedule:

Week
4- @ Dallas (how fortunate for Lions that Austin is out, Dez Bryant, Romo, Felix all hurt)

5- vs Bears

6- vs 49ers

7- vs Falcons (yes in Detroit. Atlanta is great at home, bad on the road)

8- @ Denver

9- Bye

10- @ Chicago

11- vs Panthers

12- vs Packers (Thanksgiving)

13- @ New Orleans

14- vs Vikings

15- @Raiders

16- vs Chargers

17- @ Packers

They have a pretty easy schedule, with the Falcons playing them up there in Detroit, as well as San Diego. They get Dallas now with all their guys out, or playing at 60% hurt.

I see the Lions going about 12-4, and our week 12 Thanksgiving game will be the biggest Turkey day game in years, and will take the focus off food that Thursday.

Then to finish the season against them? On Frozen Lambeau on New Years Day?
Wow.

I remember when the Bears got lucky to get some early wins last year, early and midway thru, and it led to them winning the division.

I know it all worked out for us in the end, but we want to win the division and get the playoff bye. Playoff byes are essentially "wins". You advance to the NFC Final Four automatically.

Well are schedule is basically the same. Just switch Dallas with the Giants and the 49ers with the Rams. We have to go to Atlanta and San Diego while while they get both at home. They play the Saints on the road while we were at home....

We lost 7-3 without Rodgers playing the second half. If he would have no doubt in my mind we would have won. Detroit is much improved but im not entirely sold on them and don't see 12-4. I predict more along the lines of 10-6.

I don't really care who Detroit plays or what their schedule is. Bottom line is we cannot beat ourselves like we did in games last year ala against the Redskins and Dolphins.

This is a team that went in Philly twice and won, went into Atlanta and won, and went into Chicago and won on its way to a Superbowl victory. We know what it takes, we've been there before, its just time to cleanup the errors.

We're only 3 games in. I'll go on record and say yes right now.
I hope I'm wrong because they are our only competition for the division this season.

I think they're about even money in Vegas right now. I'm buying. I can't imagine if they hadn't lost Leshoure. He was a beast and perfect for this offense. They get Nick Fairley back soon too. I hope his foot keeps him from being the beast he was at Auburn.

I wouldn't breathe easy yet. McCarthy always pulls this crap and then come Wednesday after "Further tests" we get worse news

remember, Mike Neal had a "knee sprain" and was "day-to-day" and he suddenly missed a month before getting surgery that will wipe him out at least half the season

not out of the woods yet. Hopefully on wednesday after those further tests it doesn't reveal anything worse.

bright side is Newhouse played well and Sherrod is developing. They can make due at RT a few games without Bulaga IMO

Last year Morgan Burnett had a knee sprain as of Monday morning.
Finley a knee sprain. Grant a foot sprain.
One area we've been fortunate is WR. Look at the Giants injured batch of WRs. Dallas missing Miles Austin. Dez missed a game and isn't himself since.
Kenny Britt's season is over. TO is out with the knee 'sprain'.

I'm not resting easy on this one either until I see Bulaga back out there.

We've had problems against the pass. But leading all the time, teams are gonna pass more to catch up.

Plus we lost Tramon in game 1, Collins in game 2, so that presented some challenges there.

But this is good:

Packers lead the NFL in rush defense, having allowed just 55 yards per game through the first three weeks.

Bears RB Matt Forte was held to 2 yards on 9 carries.
The Panthers’ RB's Deangelo Williams and Johnathan Stewart combined for 18 yards on 11 rushes.
Mark Ingram led the Saints with 40 yards on 13 carries in the opener.

If not for scrambles by Cammy Newton, the numbers would be even more impressive.

AJ Hawk & Desmond Bishop are doing a great job stuffing, and of course Ryan Pickett and BJ Raji, plus Wynn and Wilson and big Howard, do a good job lately in there plugging things up.

For what its worth Bulaga was walking on his own and even returned to the bench in sweats during the game. If it was serious he would've been carted off and not returned. I think we dodged a huge bullet in terms of a serious injury but I would've be suprised to see him miss a week or 2.

12-4 for the Lions is kind of reactionary, no? They were down big twice and came back. Sure that builds confidence but teams will start to close as the season goes on. Frazier completely ****** the Vikings out of that win by not giving AP the ball more. I'd say the Vikings lost rather than the Lions won.

Just to play devil's advocate. Do you think that has anything to do with the fact that they are giving up a lot of passing yards?

I'm just thinking back to the defenses under Donatell (or maybe it was Sanders?) that had good statistics vs the pass, however, the big picture was that they couldn't stop the run so opponents had no reason to throw the ball.

This defense is obviously miles apart from those. Just pointing out that sometimes statistics can be deceiving when looked at through a narrow lens.

I don't know that I'd call 10-6 being down big, which is the only other time the lions have trailed this year. I can't see 12-4 because they simply cannot run the football, and I'm still not sure I believe in their secondary against teams with actual receiving corps. However, in the North this year, I can see them winning 10.

Having seen the defense play, I think it's fair to say they can stop the run. The defensive line has been dominating the line of scrimmage on run plays and it seems to be the only time the team can tackle.

This week we'll see Elvis Dumervil on one side, and Von Miller on the other side.

TCU Newhouse will be matched up with TA&M Miller..... I hope we get the best of that one.

Luckily, it's a bad team so it's a perfect time to get Marshall some more work. The thing is, we lost to some bad teams last year (Miami, Washington, Detroit), and we lost to Tampa Bay the year before when they were like 0-7.

We are much better and more confident now however.

NEXT week we go to Hotlanta for a rematch of the awesome NFC Divisional playoff game last year in which Tramon took a shootout back & forth game, and made it a blowout. Atlanta wasted 5 draft picks on Julio Jones to try and outscore us.

Our pass rush has been horses*** this season.
All you guys have to do is give help on Matthews, and Cutler will have plenty of time.

We don't have Cullen Jenkins, who was 75% of our interior pass rush.
And we don't have the fragile Mike Neal, again, who was anointed as worthy of Jenkins replacement so they let Cullen go, to Philly, who could afford him despite all their other additions.

Grant and Bulaga officially ruled out. McCarthy said the RB rotation would be Starks and Kuhn. Said Alex Green will be active and on ST's. Did NOT commit to him playing any snaps at RB, however

Also, Nick Collins had surgery last night. Single fusion in his neck vertabrae. Surgery was a success and he's optimistic he will play next year - as reported by Charlie Casserly of CBS

Adam Schefter said prognosis is good but it could take 6 months to determine if he'll play again

TomSilverstein tom silverstein
Collins to be re-evaluated after six months. No guarantee that he'll be cleared to play, but had to have surgery to have a chance

Collins' injury was a herniated disk. The rupture occurred with the hit. He had 2 disks fused and will be in a hard collar for several weeks

According to agent Alan Herman, Collins is aware there are no guarantees he'll play again, but the surgery went well.

I know NFL players are tough, but with the kind of hits that safeties dish out/take....you kind of have to wonder if it's a good idea for Nick to even come back after having a surgery like this.

I feel very very very sad for Nick Collins.
Sad for the team, but not as very very very sad as for Nick.

And I'm still irritated by that play because it was about the 4th time that game we left RB's totally uncovered outta the backfield. When we send a RB out, he usually gets whalloped as soon as he touches it, but we kept leaving RBs uncovered, and Stewart got a lot of yards before Collins had to come up and try and make the tackle on that 3rd down play. I still remember the damn play Terrance Murphy hurt his neck. Someone fumbled a kickoff.

Terrell Davis' play where his knee was ripped up? It was a horrible pass/Int by Elway.

Jermichael last year? BASt*rd Donald Lee fumbled and J-Mike had to play defense.
Finley's injury the year before? It was a cheap shot, blind, to the side of the knee by the Lions (I think Delmas). Similar to what someone did to Jordan Shipley this year which ripped his ACL. Blind shots where they could just make clean hard tackles in the chest/gut area, but they go low like pussies.

According to Rotoworld:

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel confirms that Packers FS Nick Collins' neck injury is career threatening.
Collins underwent surgery Thursday night that involved cervical fusion, having two vertebrae fused after an MRI revealed a herniated disc. Collins will wear a head collar for "several weeks," and is expected to resume life without restrictions after that. Collins will not be allowed to do football-related activities for six months. Doctors will do a recheck after that to see if he can resume playing. Ominously for Colts fans is that this is a similar injury and surgery to what Peyton Manning is recovering from.

Sad to hear that.

speaking of Finley...you gotta wonder, maybe GB wants him back but perhaps he won't want to come back? He's not getting the stats he could be getting on a team with lesser weapons. Here is what he said after the game today to

Finley plays decoy role (http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/130949088.html)

Finley admitted it was tough to go from three touchdowns to three barely noticeable catches. He said it's going to be hard to stomach that if it continues.

Asked if it was a compliment that he drew two guys all day, he said, "Not really. I want the ball."

Finley said he hopes the coaches come up with some answers for the double teams so he can remain a big part of the offense. Against the Broncos, he stayed split out where he's more vulnerable to double teams.

"I'm not being selfish, but we'll have to come back and dial something up," he said. "You have to get your playmaker the ball in games when it's close. I can be the bull when everything's going wrong."

he is right. He IS a huge part of this offense. His presence today helped the Pack WR's get 1 on 1 coverage and they were consistently beating their guys. I do hope they get more creative and get Finley the ball more, though

J-Mike Finley's talent will get him more $, and demand, expect, ask for more money.
But he had that talent coming out of Texas and he was still a 3rd round pick.

His stats are nothing like a Gates, Gonzalez, etc though.

Maybe these bargainish deals Jordyzzz and Jones signed will be a message to J-Mike. Both Jones and Jordyzzz have actually caught more balls in their time as a Packer than he has, if I'm not mistaken. And as J-Mike and everyone knows, we won the Super Bowl with those guys playing and him just tweeting from the sideline.

I'd love to see Teddy sign him to a deal just like Jordy. A short 3 year deal so he can get a huge payday soonish if he blows up (like he thinks he can).

Keep Arod's toys.

Finley had a guy over the top of him on every passing play.... he opened things up for Jennings, Jordyzzz, even James Jones.

We also need to keep Wells and maybe he too can sign a team-friendly deal like Jordyzzz & Jones signed.

Here some photos I took, of how Clay is typically blocked about many times a game with no flags.

These are holding if it was Tauscher on Peppers or Clifton against Jared Allen.

Why is Clay not getting the call? When they let them block him like this, it's hard to get sacks of course.

When the zebra allows the guy to get away with this, he will keep lasso-ing Clay over and over like this. It needs to be called right away. You cannot allow them to grab a guy's shoulder, neck, jersey like that.

Sidenote. Notice Hawk not winning his one-on-one with a little running back, and all kinds of space for AJ to run around the guy. Or blast him back. But he was stalemated. Maybe his job was just to prevent the FB from getting out as a receiver.

A lot of people are wondering why Matthews sack #'s are so way down.

I'd imagine that TT is going to let this season play out before talks get serious with Jermichael. I would guess that he's been in touch with his agent but that nothing has been serious yet.

I get that Jermichael wants the ball but after the 1st game vs. NO everyone was like "Where was James Jones?". Aaron realizes he has a ton of weapons and goes with the hot hand, Finley had 3 TD's last week, it's a game by game thing. Jermichael is going to get his TD's and yards.

He just needs to play the game and toe the company line, do that and TT will reward you for your play on the field and your attitude off of it.

If Finley doesnt want to stay that's his right and he can follow the money to where ever that leads him. He does need to realize that there are only so many elite QB's out there and he's getting his chance to play with one right now.

Who are the young & possible emerging great QBs and who are the great QBs?

NE has 2 good young TEs.
NO has Jimmy Graham.
Indy has Dallas Clark.
We have Finley.

That's it for the elite QBs.

Rivers has Gates, who's almost done.
Romo.... the Romocoaster, loves Witten.

Young possibly next level ones:
Stafford, they have Pettigrew and my man Scheffler.
Matt Ryan, has Gonzalez who is on his last legs. He'd go there happily.
Joe Flacco sucks, but they could use Finley there.
Big Ben, they could use him as Heath Miller is old.

Sam Bradford? They could really use J-mike.
I don't know why J-mike would wanna go there, except the big $.

He'd be excited to join Cam Newton, but they just added Shockey and Greg Olsen already.... still, J-mike is way better, and much younger.

Philly? He'd be up for joining them, or the Giants. Philly snatches everyone up, don't be shocked for them to throw a big #$ at Finley. Somehow their cap situation is fine.

I don't see us investing big money in Jermichael and I don't see him taking any form of a discount given what he said after the game Sunday.

How much can we really invest in paying pass catchers or in one position? Jones is locked up for a bit, Nelson just got his money, Cobb was a 2nd rounder and has stud written all over him, and Jennings is going to need an extension soon as he is one of the league's best. DJ Williams, Andrew Quarless, Ryan Taylor, and Tom Crabtree all have their niches with this team and after our success last year I think we will be fine if we use our tight ends situationally instead of having the one high priced pro-bowl caliber player. I'm not the biggest fan of Finley's character either. He seems to be a me first type of guy and that really conflicts with the makeup of this team.

This is gonna be one of those situations like Cullen Jenkins, where the fan in us wanted us to keep the guy. Where the fan in us felt it was obvious that the player was so good, we should keep the guy.

But for business reasons, it just didn't happen.

J-Mike is the same guy he was coming out of Austin: Talented as hell, but there were reasons he wasn't a 1st round pick like a Shockey, Greg Olsen, Pettigrew. Isn't that funny? Think about those 3 guys. They all have their warts too, yet were 1st rounders.

I think the difference with Cullen and Finley is that Finley is a monster and can be that difference maker. Cullen is a very solid player but is more replaceable then a Finley. DJ Williams is still a question mark simply since he hasn't been on the field hardly at all but is not the player physically Finley is right now.

Well that, and about 5 years more of youth for J-Mike. Isn't he only 25?

Age doesn't have anything to do with it. TT could save money by not signing a Jenkins and replace him with a 2nd round pick who was poised to take over the position. Yes Jenkins is 30 but still has some good solid years left hence the contract with the Eagles. Being 25 has no effect whether JM gets a contract or not.

As far as Farve, good god can he really not help himself. The great thing about Aaron is he only needs a couple comments for him to use that as ammo for getting better.

Aaron likes the underdog role and the fact that the media is worried about the Eagles and the Cowboys is only fuel to him. The Packers again are in the shadows despite being 4-0 and defending SB champs.

I respect Aaron because he's never forgotten the people that have doubted him and being motivated to use that as fuel to become the best ever is awesome. Maybe he doesn't really care about Brett but I'd bet that he wants to go down as better then Brett and will work his ass off for that.

Aaron is well on his way to go down better than Brett. And he knows it.

But, that doesn't lead him to say anything that makes an ESPN headline, or come off as a 'douchebag'. I like the smirks he usually has before answering a Favre question. The quiet confidence yet classy.

It was obvious that management's intentions were to let James walk...he had zero suitors, was available for cheap, and had the support of the locker room. We all know that Finley's market will be huge.

If I had to guess a destination for Finley, I would say Miami. The Phins look like they have as good a chance as any to land the 1st pick and Mr. Luck and pairing Finley with Marshall would be wise for them.

That's a reason why we need to keep him: because he WILL improve one of our competitors as well as take away our weapon or weapon-decoy.

Rodgers passer rating is 125 thru 4 games. That's unheard of. He has figured out how to use Finley as a weapon no matter what the defense does.

With him, Jennings, Jordy, and now Cobb, those are 4 dangerous playmakers. Jones and Driver are decent, and we've seen them each make big plays too. But the other 4 are simply tough matchups. But it's revolving around J-Mike.

I wanna keep him for sure. So does Aaron.

Same here. Alot of panic over nothing IMO. We know his value and have the money to sign him to a short term deal, which is what we've done with Jennings and Nelson. Personally I think the Packers are just waiting because they want to make sure they aren't investing in an injury prone player. Worst case there's the franchise tag.

It bothers me when he says things that indicate that he believes this offense revolves around him instead of just being one of the weapons. Calling himself the "playmaker" of this offense. Are Jennings, Jordy, Cobb, Jones, not also playmakers in this offense?

That being said I saw an article this morning that said Finley and McCarthy had a talk and he feels better now. (Sorry can't find the link now but it was on Jsonline or packersnews)

Finley seems to speak before thinking sometimes and lets the emotions of the moment dictate his comments. I'm sure he was frustrated after being double teamed all day. Hopefully that is all this was.

Finley was a RS Sophmore with very little film & experience, and he ran a slow 40 time. Those were the only reasons he wasn't a 1st rder. Those guys you listed got to be the man for their schools, most time a few years before coming out. Nobody had really seen much of Finley to throw a 1st out there. That, and people just assumed he was going to run a 4.4 or a low 4.5 so he let some people down in that aspect.

That said, why would not being a 1st rd pick matter? Look at Jimmy Graham. Unfinished product like Finley was coming out, but if both of those guys stayed and put up big seasons like all those others did they would have been 1st rounders also.

You guys have so many weapons though you have the luxury of going about it as you choose, but it seems unlikely you let him walk for nothing. A bunch of teams would trade something for him under the franchise tag. I don't think he's totally got the team concept thing down yet and is more concerned with being a star.

He may have to move on if he feels that way, but he's young and still stupid, and when he doesn't have Rodgers throwing him the ball right where it needs to be he'll know he messed up.

You guys are crazy for even thinking that its like beneficial to get rid of Finely or something. Id also say your crazy if you think hes not on this team next year. MM loves the guy and so does Rodgers. He is a guy that TT drafted and unless he demands a trade , holds out and says he isnt playing another down for us hes going nowhere. He is a focal point of this team and a huge mismatch. You dont just willing let guys like him go that are special and dont come around often. So he said hes a playmaker and you have to find ways to get playmakers the ball... big deal, hes basically right about what he said. Jones basically said the same thing week 1. These guys are all competitive and they just want to be involved. Plus hes still young and will mature more with age.

SuperPacker the emergence of Williams? What has he even done to prove absolutely anything in this league besides the stuff you heard he did in practice? I dont even think he has been on the field yet this year besides special teams. Plenty of guys of rode the hype train to turn around and do nothing in the NFL. He looks like a young Finely? Yeah not sure if we could have overcome a long term injury to Clifton last season. I know we overcame a lot but that is the one position we really didn't have any depth. This year however it appears we'll be able to manage.

Yeah with Bulaga back things should be a little more manageable. I would guess that Clifton retires if this is an major injury.

Injuries midweek are a lot better than in-game, because the Doctor Dom can prepare his scheme and cook up some things during the week prior to the game.

He's fine with the in-game adjustments too, but it's harder with injuries and bodies lost, obviously.

A great slate of NFL games on Fox tomorrow!

Go Niners.

Looking ahead to next week (I hate the Vikings)..... this I don't like, with Clifton being out. I hate Jared Allen too.

Week after week, RE Jared Allen (63 snaps) and LE Brian Robison (62) find ways to top themselves. Allen beat LT Levi Brown for sacks in 3.0 and 2.5 seconds, torched Brown outside for another hit and finished with seven total pressures on QB Kevin Kolb. He also batted a pass, made his presence felt in the run game and recovered the fumble forced by Robison, who stripped Kolb in 2.6 seconds, got a cleanup sack in 3.8 and totaled seven pressures against fill-in RT Jeremy Bridges. Not even 24 chips and extra-man protection calls in 55 dropbacks (43.6%) or injuries could hold down Allen (poked in eye) and Robison (abdominal strain). The illegal use of hands penalty on Bridges that wiped out WR Early Doucet's 11-yard touchdown catch was a product of Robison's speed rush, too.

Looking ahead to next week

Never a good thing to do. The Rams may be winless but they have nothing to lose. Could be a simular game to that against Carolina.

Right. Hopefully the players aren't looking ahead at all as I am.
Michael Irvin just said he doesn't see a way we can lose to these Rams.

With injuries, anything can happen though.

Just like last year when we weren't supposed to lose to the Redskins and Dolphins...

And the Buccs a year before that!! God that was embarassing. Anyway we won so lets move onto the vikings game. I reckon we will be 7-0 quite comfortably heading into the bye

Exactly. We lost to McNabb and Henne for God's sake. And later to Shaun Hill.

But we didn't lose any of those games because I, or cvv84, were looking ahead.

That being said, the Packers will be facing Christian Ponder in his first NFL start.
If we get some pressure on him, Woodson might get a pick-6.

However, I wanted to face McNabb not Ponder, for 2 reasons.
#1- More Viking fans would have sold their tickets to Packer fans if it was going to be more of the same, McNabb. Now they will want to see the debut of their 1st round pick, who they got excited about in preseason.

#2- If it was McNabb, every single incomplete pass he threw in there would have resulted in a growing chorus of boos. Like what Kyle Orton faced in Denver and Rex Grossman in Washington last week. That pressure sucks, at home, for any QB.

I remember well losing to Josh Freeman and the 0-7 Bucs, in their house. The team, and their fans, really rallied around him.
We need to get up early, and throttle these grape apes right out the chute. I want to hammer them.

Found this little nugget:

The Rams showed a clear intent to run left on the Packers, 18 of their runs went to the left side of the center.

Just show's how weak we've been on that side since Jenkins left and Neal/Zombo got hurt. Hopefully that will start to change with Zombo back and Neal supposedly going to return. Walden has been a disapointment after winning the job during preseason.

What is it with this team and getting guys hurt in practice? Pickett suffered a concussion yesterday, although McCarthy is confident he'll be cleared to play Sunday

Oh and, to the surprise of no one, Neal probably won't be ready to come back immediately after the Bye....and there is still no guarantee if he'll even play this year. At this point, the name Mike Neal is nothing but a myth in Green Bay
