View Full Version : How can people not like hockey?
Simple question...
I think the NHL is more exciting to watch in the NBA... especially if it's a close game.

um...what? Do you want NFL type scores for hoceky or what? At least in the new NHL, low scoring games are probably the most exciting, because some of the saves goalies make are amazing
as for hard to follow, thats your call, but IMO it shouldn't be something you base a sport on
3 reasons casual sports fans should like hockey...
1. The shootout - this might be the most exciting thing in sports. Hockey traditionalists may think the old OT system is better, but the shootouts are just so fun.
2. Alex Ovechkin, Ilya Kovalchuk, Marian Gaborik, Henrik Zetterberg, Malkin, Crosby - These guys are heads and shoulders some of the best dekers around and make defenders look just plain silly.
3. Intensity - Never a dull moment in hockey when the teams don't like each other. All it takes is a run at a goalie and things start to get very interesting

Last year in the playoffs, Anaheim had trouble selling out their playoff games.
The same thing happened in Carolina two years ago.
In Buffalo, last year in the playoffs, we had thousands of fans outside the arena (The games were sold out, so people stood outside)
Maybe it depends on the area you live in, and how you were brought up.

don't watch if you don't want too
I'd love to get into it more cause it really does look good. But we get one game a week here, and i'm usually not even home for it. In other words, very, very hard to get involved in.

I went to a high school hockey game last weekend (the first I had ever seen full length) and I thought it seemed pretty cool, but I really didn't know what was going on or the strategy behind all the lines and substitutions and such. I think because of how much I'm into football and basketball, it would take me a while to really start to like hockey because I would want to really understand what was going on, and I just don't know if I wanna put in that kind of effort.

I'm from Chicago, so midwest...I mean, I played hockey occasionally growing up, but we played baseball, basketball, football and soccer more just because it was easier...all you need is a ball for soccer and football, a bat and ball and maybe random crap to use as bases for baseball, and at least 1 hoop for basketball
it really does depend on where you're from, but my guess is the majority of kids in america play baseball, football, basketball and soccer more than hockey, so they don't really ever become interested in it

Hockey and Soccer are alike in the sense where you have to look for small sometimes subtle things to really appreciate it, and if you play the sport or are an avid fan you just notice these things. Of course there are the big saves/goals that everyone notices, but I'm talking about the small stuff which makes it so appealing to me.

exactly...I grew up playing soccer, so I love watching pretty much any game, just for the strategy and subtle things that most people outside of the fan base wouldn't understand...personally, I can watch a hockey game if I really wanted to, I have nothing against it, but not understanding any strategies or how to identify what exactly is a penalty vs. what isn't, stuff like that, just kinda turns me off to watching a game on TV

I love hockey, seriously. I'm a fan of the Devils, and it's really awesome to see Brodeur do what he does. He's just so phenomenal, that his great saves make up for a lack of goals. Also, there is simply no feeling in sports even close to as nerve-wracking as being on the penalty kill with a one-goal lead or in a tied game with under 5 minutes to go.

I agree with TimDris on this one. Where I live, there are hockey rinks everywhere. And for the most part, they are almost always unavailable due to over booking. Where I am staying right nowin Buffalo, there were 3 outdoor rinks that were made in the park right bhind my house. Things like that make it avalable anytime.

I think its all about exposure. Hockey can exist anywhere in the country (either on the ice, in the streets, or organized roller hockey). It all comes down to whether or not people are exposed to it. There are plenty of people in Florida, California, Arizona, etc. who play ice or roller hockey. People just are not exposed to it like they are with baseball, football, and basketball. That's why it is not popular.

Exactly. In Toronto, you are basically born to play hockey. I played for a couple years before I quit for football. Its just something that you are bound to do. Everyone is given hockey sticks, nets or goalie equipment for bdays or christmas, and everyone plays. Its just the way of life in some areas.
It does depend. You are right though, there are hockey fans everywhere, and it does come down to exposure. I guess the same could be said about football in Canada. Its really all about intrest and who gets it going around you.

Yeah I've never really thought about that, but its the same with my friends. I am one of the few hockey fans that can watch a basketball game (only college though). I guess the sports are so opposite and the popularity the NBA gets makes hockey fans jealous. What always gets me going is that there will be obscure college bball games on (Del St vs Hampton) on instead of an NHL game.
If there was a NHL team in Milwaukee I could probably get into it. I watched the NCAA championship a couple years ago when Wisconsin won and it was entertaining. They started airing Minnesota Wild games on FSN Wisconsin last year, but that doesn't do it for me. I was hoping that the Predators owner would move them to Milwaukee or start a new team in Milwaukee since he lives here, but he bought the Wild instead.

You know what I really like about the NHL as opposed to the NBA, it isn't fixed. There is no way someone can convince me the NBA isn't fixed to some extent. It is without a doubt the easiest sport to fix. Also, hockey does tend to rule.
roughrider30
02-10-2008, 11:33 PM
I dont know if this has been said yet or not, but I really think the main reasons for its lack of nationwide popularity has to do with fact that it is the hardest sport to just go out and play anytime with friends. Especially if you live in a place where there aren't many rinks. I love hockey, but I also live in a town with 6 indoor rinks and around 8 outdoor rinks.
For example: for football all you would need is an open space and a ball. For hockey, you need a rink and all the equipment, so its much harder to get a game going.
Kids, especially in southern states, grow up playing sports like baseball, football, and basketball as it is much easier to just go out and play

Ive been playing minor hockey since I was 5 or something and its somewhat just a natrual part of life where I live. Hockey Night in Canada is something everyone watches Saturday nights, aside from league play sometimes rent the ice with my buddies and have a great game. Play with my Dads team when they have a family game (all the players have their kids play, players and kids are split into 2 equal teams) then kick back in the dressing room with some beers. I cant stress how much of a history, tradition, etc is around me. My family has strong hockey ties and hockey is really just second nature where I am.

Ya I come from a big hockey town too, where everyone's kids play and if you not a hockey family your aren't a big deal in our town. Life pretty much revolves around our college hockey team at The University of North Dakota. It is really the big attraction around here for Friday and Saturday nights, we just get drunk, yell at the other team from the student section, and have a great time ;)
High school hockey up here and in Minnesota is similar to how high school football is down in states like Texas, as the whole town goes to the games and everything is all about hockey around here.

I didn't read every post in the thread, but I think the main reason Hockey is not large in the states is because it really doesn't transfer well onto television. A live hockey game can be the most exciting live sporting event, but when on television it loses a lot to the casual sport fan.

Simple question...

Not enough fighting
I love hockey, but I can think of some of the reasons why others don't:
1) Not widely played. It's a lot easier to understand the rules of the game when you've dabbled in it as a participant. But you even if you're just playing stick hockey, you need at least a ball and a stick for each person.
2) Tough to watch for newcomers on TV. On standard-definition, you basically have to follow the puck by the flow of the players, which is not an easy thing for new watchers. This is unlike football (big brown ball), basketball (big orange ball), or baseball (not a lot going on to keep track of). HD makes the biggest improvement for hockey games than any other sport.
3) Few national games. Unless you have an NHL team locally or access to Versus, the only games you can watch are on NBC, which doesn't air nearly as many games as ESPN did when they had the rights.
4) Lack of ESPN exposure. Like it or not, ESPN and its family of networks is the destination for the majority of Americans to get their sports fill. And since they don't have any coverage of hockey outside of NHL highlights and the occasional bits and pieces from Barry Melrose, mainstream sports fans are not getting a lot of exposure to the sport.
5) "Who are these guys? This one goes hand in hand with #4. 19 players on each team get a decent amount of playing time in each game, and are involved in the action around the puck. That's a lot of players for Joe Mainstream to decipher, especially when many of them are European. And because ESPN doesn't give any attention to hockey, the mainstream doesn't even learn about the stars. I doubt 5% of Americans can tell you who Sidney Crosby is.
6) Low scoring. I love low scoring games for the goaltending and the intensity. But for the same reason that they never picked up soccer, Americans want action and they want it reflected in the score.
-----
#4 is probably first and foremost, and it's certainly a Catch-22. ESPN stops covering the NHL, so hockey's demand in the mainstream deteriorates. And because it deteriorates, the mainstream decides it wants less and less hockey coverage, so ESPN doesn't give them what they don't want.
I hate it, but it rings pretty true. When TV contracts come up, remember Gary Bettman. You have a lot more to lose in not having ESPN on your side than they do in not having the NHL.

couldnt disagree more. to me, there is a time and place for fighting, but its a part of the game. there is nothing like a team down 2 goals in the 3rd, and a fight breaks out and the losing team rallies back and gains momentum fter a fight.

I know the whole momentum thing but, it really is pointless when you think about it. A big hit can do the same for a team as winning a fight can...Do you need to breakout in a fist fight to swing momentum in other sports? I always found it stupid...but, i guess that's just me.

Crosby is the face of the league and for good reason. Totally disagree.
Fighting always has, and always will be a part of the game. You want to know what the crowds think? They get just as loud for a fight as they do for a goal.
Take this scenario. You're playing hockey, your teammate gets his face smashed into the boards and is down on the ice. Do you stand there or go try to beat the **** out of the guy who knocked him into the boards?

I agree and then push to the degree of a milion percent. Fighting in hockey is part of the game, tradition, etc. Those players respect each other so much when fighting, its great for the team as well. Did you not just see captain Jerome Iginla win a fight to rally his team from behind, score the tieing goal in the dying seconds and than score the shootout winner? Fighting in hockey dates back to the beggining, remember that in the 70s and before guys fought with their sticks, swinging them at each other. In minors when a fight happened the shut off the arena lights and a put a spotlight on the two guys fighting, swinging their sticks, etc.

You have to admit Olvechkin is a better scorer. Sid has more puck skills and passing, but the nod for me (hardly watches hockey) goes to olvechkin. You are a Penguins fan, so that construes you view, but they give Olvechkin 0 push in the media. Sid is amazing, but people love scoring, hence why D-Wade is more popular than a Chris Paul or a Steve Nash even. America loves scoring, so pushing Olvechkin would only help. Sid is more marketable, but 2 sports stars in most cases is better than one. (Jordan is the true exception)

Which I disagreed with. To me the reason hockey hasnt caught on in the states is due to a few reasons, none of which being lack of goals which I feel is an easy scapegoat.
1. Lack of culture
In Canada hockey is the culture. In th US its not, football is, basketball is a way of life for many urban raised people. Hockey is not catching on in the states because of titles like "Americas Game". Its fun to discuss sports, the problem is that no one in the States wants to watch something that has little to no importance to their friends and people around them. Thats why there is such differencial between places. For instance Minisota and Buffalo love hockey, generations are raised into and because so many people watch it its a popular discussion and is easily socialble. In place like Texas its the opposite, if you were a kid growing up in Texas after watching a hockey game you might be like wow that was pretty good, however when you went to discuss it with friends or such you would be met with a wall. That stunts the popularity.
Lack of Importance/Exposure
I have yet to come across a Sports Illustarted, ESPN broadcast, etc that consistantly feeds hockey info. In fact a month ago PTI had a 2 minute thing on hockey, I was excited. This ties into number 1. People want to follow a sociable, important sport. The media oulets in the States dont treat it as such and therefore leaves very little breeding ground for hockey enthusiasts.

There are plenty of reasons it hasnt caught on...but, scoring is very important to it's success. Like Sarf said, this is a big reason why soccer fails in the States as well. Yes, culture has an important role but, it's going to be hard to garner attention w/ low scoring games. The shootout was implicated to add some excitement to the game...more shots on goal/scoring opportunities. People just find it boring...most Americans like and are used to, high scoring games....that's just the way it is.

Not really. It ties into my previous post in this thread. Baseball is a sociable sport that people can talk about in mostly every state. Baseballs best ball players (arguably) are coming from the dominican, puerto rico, etc. Its American made but its not american dominated like basketball and football. If baseball were to have originated somewhere else and put into the spot hockey is now trying to push into the american market I guarentee it wouldnt do well. The fact is that because its a sociable established sport in US it will always be popular, hockey not having those values in the States I say once again is its downfall.

Hockey used to be popular in the states. It had a firm fan base...but, the game itself didnt have a long lasting appeal....among the next generations. In comparison to other sports in America...it was low scoring and oft-considered, a defensive game and thus, boring....the interest started to die down. If you polled 100 americans, I'm sure the main reason given for not watching/liking hockey would be the lack of scoring....same goes for soccer. Factor in that hockey is dominated by foreign players and you really have a sport that doesnt look too attractive to the American fan.

Pretty cool thread.
For me personally, hockey is one of the sports that I love to play, but I don't watch it a ton on TV. As some other posters have alluded to, it loses it's appeal being watched on television.
Another thing is, I feel like hockey plays too many games. Kind of like baseball and basketball. I mean, it's fun to watch a game during the regular season for any of those sports, but is it really meaningful outside of rivalry or division games?
To me, that's why football will always be one of the best sports. Every game matters. You can't go on a ten game losing streak and turn it around to get into the playoffs. Although football couldn't play a lot more games, even if they wanted too, as there are just too many injuries.
Another thing is I think people don't feel connected to it like they do baseball, basketball, or football. It's easy for people to pick up a basketball, football, baseball along with maybe a few other pieces of equipment and just go out and play with some friends. Hockey (true ice hockey that is) generally requires a rink, skates, sticks, pucks, etc. And that's all assuming you can find an ice rink that lets you play hockey on it.
Of course, I'm talking mainstream. Obviously there will always be places were hockey is built into the culture, and thus is played a lot more at an amateur level - but in your average American city I don't really think that's the case.

When hockey came back and they lost in an OT game in the playoffs, I remembered why hockey can be either absolutely awesome or give you the worst feeling. Even more so then football. Fighting back before the recent years was true fighting. It wasn't done only for momentum. It was all about protection and grudges. I mean the old Detroit-Colorado rivalries had fights, but they were about revenge and pure hatred for each other. I hate the Cam Jansens that can't skate but go out there to fight for the fans. yeah, it's stupid to me. i think the problem was, when the NHL started expanding like mad in the early and late 90's, Milwaukee was in a funny place for arenas. we had the Bradley Center, which isn't bad, but it isn't great....and all the cities that were willing to build awesome arenas got the nod. plus, to my knowledge the city didn't really make a play for a team.
but yeah, when i'm chosen as NHL commissioner, Milwaukee, Seattle and Portland would get teams relocated from southern cities, and whoever decided that the North Stars should be moved to Dallas would be publically tarred and feathered.
oh, and winnipeg and quebec would get teams back.

A little off topic but have you guys ever seen the Simpsons episode where they show a pro soccer game where the players are passing around in a triangle. The US announcer is bored to death and the Europe announcer is going crazy with excitement. Very funny stuff.
Soccer is boring. But I need to love it. if not, I almost get arrested.

I understand it is popular, but that type of fighting is a disgrace.
Fighting for momentum is useful.

I was hoping that the Predators owner would move them to Milwaukee or start a new team in Milwaukee since he lives here, but he bought the Wild instead. There's the connection. I still don't understand why he wouldn't put a real team here though.

I don't dislike hockey. and i can promise you that if the NHL put a team in Milwaukee, I would be a die hard fan of the team and big fan of the league in general. but, the NHL, in its infinite wisdom, decided cities like San Jose, Miami and Phoenix were more worthy of a team than the wintery city in Wisconsin that happens to have the US Olympic Speed Skating facility in its limits.
San Jose is always in the top 10 for average attendence every year.

Yea, and consistntly they are ranked top 10 for "experience". San Jose is a great hockey town you chose a pretty brutal example there.

I would support a team in Wisconsin as well....being at the University of Minnesota has helped me appreciate the game more and become me interested

What are some of the worst hockeytowns?
I'm sure Florida is pretty high up there.
Maybe Carolina, and Atlanta?

Nashville, Miami (FLA Panthers), Atlanta should all lose their teams.
Cities like Milwaukee, Hartford (I know it won't happen), Hamilton, Winnipeg, deserve teams.

I enjoy hockey more than any other sport including football, I always played hockey because its the most fun sport to play also. Nothing like playing a sport where one second you're all finesse deking people out, then the next somebody cheaps you or your teammate and you're all physical kicking some ass.

I think that Hockey is probably the most exciting sport to watch in person because of the electric atmosphere at games. When you're there in person it's hard not to be enthralled.
PS. I posted in this thread pretty much just because Wingy and ERU did. I need to get back into their good favor after they walked in to breakfast the other day and I was standing there with an arm around their mothers.

I have friends from the south that when they watched a hockey game they simply had a hard time following the puck. I guess its just not a natural thing to be able to do, who knows, but I think that has something to do with it. Its hard to pick up, and a lot of times it doesn't look like strategy but more dump the puck in the zone and skate around after it. I love hockey, Minnesota boy, but I can understand some people's frustration/lack of interest.

^They dump the puck in and then chase after it, if the defense stands them up at the blue line, or if they want to make a change.

Hah, yeah. It was slightly before my time, but the Whalers were pretty big around here if I recall. Still felt like they should have stayed. That was our only professional sports team. It's part of the reason UConn Basketball is so huge here, because it's our only really competitive high level means of local sports entertainment. By local I mean in-state.
Damn it, we deserve a team! New York has three teams (New York/New Jersey, technically) - we should at least get one.
Oh well. At least I get a lot of Ranger games via MSG, as I believe someone else mentioned earlier.
