I was just curious on how well they will do next year. D-Unit seems to know a lot about them. So what I want to know is are they poised to make another run at the BCS or are they losing too much in this year's draft?

I don't know enough, but they are losing a lot of offensive pieces, I'm not sure if they can go undefeated again, which is what they would have to do.

Lost their QB, lost all their WRs, lost their coach. They'll remain competative in the WAC. However, they're going to get exposed very quickly. Away games at Florida and Oregon State will likely wind up with Hawaii getting blown away.

Speaking of QB, who's gonna assume that role?

Right now, it's looking like Greg Alexander, a JC recruit who's the most talented player Hawaii's ever had at QB. I kind of feel sorry for him. He got the complete bait and switch.

I was totally unaware that Hawaii had Inoke Funaki on their team. I remember watching his highlight tape in HS and I thought this kid was gonna be big. He disappeared for a while but I guess he's back. What are the chances of him starting? He's pretty athletic and can throw from what I can remember.

Slim to none, Graunke and Alexander are going to be battling for the starting job. Unless the new coach moves to a spread option, but even then, Brent Rausch has a better chance than Funaki if that happens.

Graunke has waited for this moment, but you know what. Nothing is promised to him. June may have made him the incumbent starter no matter what, but June is gone. Graunke may have been the QB for Hawaii when they beat Nevada on the road while Colt was sat out due to injury, but Graunke is not a good QB. Inoke Funaki is a better QB than him. Easily. I would put a bet on that Graunke isn't the starting QB next year when the season starts. He's already suspended from the team and told to stay away until training camp starts. He's lost respect of many of his teammates. He made way too many mistakes last year when he got in that I know for a fact that he's not a good QB. Funaki is better. Funaki went on a 2 year Mormon mission. That's why he was gone. He has 2 years left to play. I'm not sure he'll ever be the outright starter, but I'd be comfortable with him coming in to play as a back up.

We were on a heavy hunt for QBs this year. Greg McMackin made it a priority to beef up the position. When June was here, we had secured a commitment from Bo Levi from Katy HS in Texas, but he left for SMU to follow June. We were also on the heels of Jacob Bower (ended up going to Tulsa) and Kevin Craft (went to UCLA), 2 top JC QBs, but they didn't come after June left as well. We did end up with Brent Rausch (3 stars) and Greg Alexander (4 stars), 2 other top JC QBs. Alexander was a late signing, but he only has 2 years to play 2, so many to colleges didn't recruit him despite being a 6'5, 240 pound strong armed QB. He has been timed running 40 yards in 4.65 seconds. Last season, he threw for 3,876 yards second most among California community college quarterbacks and 43 touchdowns. I have a feeling Alexander will beat out Graunke for the starting QB position. Rausch has 3 years to play 3 and is more raw than Alexander. We really are fortunate to land Alexander. He's the highest rated QB recruit we ever had. I know that's not saying much, but it is what it is.

The decision to make McMackin the HC was a brilliant move. He is well versed in Mouse Davis' Run 'N Shoot offense and we've retained our offensive assistant coaches outside of our RBs coach. Hawaii is keeping the high powered Run 'N Shoot offense but McMackin has said he will tweak it from what June did. Mac wants to incorporate a power run game to compliment it. We picked up a big JC RB Jake Heun, a 6'2, 245 pound power back. I'm stoked with what we'll see next season. Our recruiting class was awesome. We got a lot of local talent that usually would've gone to the mainland, but Mac made a point to make home visits with the local HS talent. June Jones in his entire time here, never made 1 home visit. Crazy, but it wasn't his philosophy.

We stacked up on Defense and I'm excited about the future. We also stacked up on WR. Next season's WR corps is gonna be sick.

All that said, we have a competitive schedule next season.... our out of conference schedule includes Florida, Oregon State, Washington State and Cincinnati. I think our main goal is to repeat as WAC champs, but a BCS Bowl is out of the question.

I like Hawaii giving the JC athletes love. Some schools wouldn't even take second look at you if you tell them you're from a Junior College.

I'm originally from where Funaki, Olevao, Tachibana, Torres, and Falemalu are from. You guys got some great players and great people in all of them.

I thought Derek Uperesa was a Senior at St. Francis?

I've seen him play and frankly.. There's your LT if he has a year or 2 left. The kid is a manimal on the local circuit (St. Francis Pa is about 20 Minutes from my House and My Ex-Gf used to go there. I'd go up over the weekends and watching him was ridiculous.. 6'6 330lbs)

Yeah, he's coming to Hawaii. His brother Dane played LT for us a couple years ago. The Uperesa family is rooted in Hawaii, so it's easy to see why he came back. He originally signed with Oregon St out of HS and Hawaii fans were extremely disappointed in that. Good to see him back. JC players usually step in right away, so this is promising. Plus our OTs sucked last year.

I think with 1-2 years of Hawaii exposure and good records he could legitly rise to a 2nd-3rd round pick in the Franchise LT sense.

Even at 330-350lbs he's very very athletic, and has great feet. Now at St. Francis he's playing very low LOC.. but He's owned everyone. Not given up 1 sack and they're averaging something like 6-8 yards per carry his side.

How many years of eligibility does he have left?
