View Full Version : Family Guy or South Park?

The thread on the Family Guy spin-off got me wondering what the public opinion is on which cartoon is better.
My personal opinion is that South Park is far and away the better of the two. South Park takes on current issues every week, they aren't afraid of attacking anyone (and everyone), and I think it simply has much more intelligent and clever satire.
I will admit that I watch Family Guy on occasion and I do find it funny, but it is definitely a step down. The storylines in general are not typically very funny, they simply rely on irrelevant, random, and interchangeable flashbacks and jokes to get laughs. If you haven't seen the two part episode of South Park, "Cartoon Wars," I definitely recommend you check it out. SP definitely reveals what Family Guy is all about.

In my opinion, both Family Guy and South Park used to be funnier than they are today, but South Park has lasted much longer and has stood the test of time better. The original three seasons of Family Guy were absolutely spectacular, but lately it's become a parody of itself (something South Park has done as well, but much less so).

I think the last two seasons of South Park have been the funniest yet. While the first couple of seasons were still funny, they relied a lot more on 'potty humor.' I think the show has matured and become more creative.

Family Guy is...okay, it makes me smile sometimes. But South Park is just awesome, makes me lol everytime
There's no doubt in my mind that South Park is far and away the better show.

I find the new humor way more inconsistent. The show has patches were it gets unbelievably preachy, and I'd argue that they go more for gross out humor now than they used to. For me, riffing off about some recent movie or event isn't more creative (and definitely not more mature), it's just different and not always the best idea. In fact, I would go so far as to say that the recent South Park episodes that didn't base themselves around social commentary were markedly better than the ones that did, simply in terms of story strength and humor.
Then again, I grew up with the earlier seasons, so that might explain my attachment to them.

I TiVo both, but South Park has adapted to the times. At first, it was just a funny show due to potty-mouth kids and such. Over time, it has evolved into political and social satire along with the fun. It's a pretty intricate show and I think it is great.

South Park although I do love both shows South Park the story lines are just that much better. Also dare I say that SP has out family guyed family guy. FG's best jokes come from social references to which they put in nicely out of context and do so for a good 10 seconds to and they are very funny. SP dedicates a whole episode to one or two social references and parodies them or makes them look foolish (For the more recent seasons) but still shoves around some toilet humor when appropriate.

Thank god this vote isn't even close, Family Guy has one joke, remember when........something stupid happens....but South Park has either somewhat relevant story lines happening, or just hilarious episodes.

South Park all the way. Family guy has become one annoying flashback after another. "Remember that time, when family guy was funny...no? me neither"

South Park.
It's not even close. Family Guy is extremely overrated and just is flat out not funny.
South Park is easily one of the more intelligent shows on television. To the casual TV viewer, they'd think that statement is crazy and South Park is nothing but fart jokes. It's not at all, though. Trey Parker and Matt Stone address current issues and tackle them from a common sense standpoint, using their humor to drive the point home.

I make it a point to watch new South Park episodes when they air. With family guy, if I'm bored and theres are re-run on then I'll watch it. I basically agree with everything already said in this thread.

pretty much agree with everything thats been said so far. Even though my username is a stupid family guy character, i think South Park is the better show. I was obsessed with the first couple seasons of Family Guy but since they came back after being cancelled for a couple years, the stuff hasnt been as good(still like Family Guy but not like i used to). It's getting kinda repetitive and i still like most of the stupid jokes they make but the storylines are usually complete crap. South Park continues to have great and original stuff year in and year out and South Park will still crank out a phenomenal episode every now and then (like World of Warlock last year) where I dont think Family Guy has had a truly great episode in quite some time.

i have to go with south park.
south park is the show that require some thought to get the nuances.
family guy is just all about the ADD. really. the spastic near deadpan comedy is break-neck speed, but doesn't provide the same sort of commentary with irreverence that south park does.

I like both but South Park is way better than Family Guy. If you look at the lifespan of SP it's really amazing how many genuinely hilarious episodes there are, and in how many different ways Parker and Stone are able to make the show funny. I don't know if it's been on lately, but one of my favorite all time SP episodes is the Underpants Gnomes. If you havn't seen it you can check it out on allsp.com, season two.

south park > family guy
i like both but family guy tries way too hard and the jokes do not relate to the plot. south park is way more clever also. seth mcfarlane just likes to feel smart by making these allusions and bizarre cultural and personal references that get on my nerves a lot. sometimes its fabulous and just genius but many of the new episodes from the newer seasons have been ridiculous. South park also has funny plot lines like imagination land and the warcraft episodes for example, but family guy has no real plot and relies solely on its "u think thats bad- remember when i...." which gets old
south park is always funny and always has been

Family Guy have only a few good eps in my book
South Park usally have atleast one good thing in each ep
family guy plagarizes like hell and episodes still come out looking like crap. It's just the same concept of random flshbacks every single episode.

Both are good, but it's definitely South Park. In 10 or 11 years there has only been one South Park episode that I refuse to rewatch (The Woodland Creatures episode). That's very impressive. Family Guy is good but it's like once you've seen an episode before, it loses it's humor. Family Guy is good for coming up with the unexpected, while South Park is good because it's smart.
