I'm trying to trace my heritage back a ways, find out a little more about my ancestors, my family's origin and such...was wondering what other people knew on the subject, if there is anyone really knowledgable about that stuff on here, itd be cool if someone could tell me the origins behind my name and such. What about you guys? Names, places of origin, etc. etc.

btw, my last name is "elyea", if anyone knows anything about that origin of that name, please fill me in

After going to the library recently for my research paper I got a flyer for ancestry but I guess they just have the software there...Anyway. I want to check this stuff out too even though I know the basics of my family. By the way your last name looks like Hell Yeah but I'm sure you've heard that before.

My mother's half is primarily English and my father is adopted so I'm unsure what nationality his blood is. My grandparents from that side though have German (and some Dutch) roots.

You might want to try Welsh.

I have traced part of my mom's family all the way back to the mid 1600s. We have a fairly interesting history. I haven't researched my Dad's yet.

My family is French, German, Irish, Native American, Welsh, and Scot.

ive been told by others that it sounds welsh/irish, its pronounced "L-E-A", but ive never been able to actually find anyhting on it other then the recent history...welsh would be really cool though.

and, well, ive got auburn hair and a rather nasty temper at times, so people tell me if anything i should be irish, but i would really like to find out for sure.

Well the basics... I'm half Norwegian, both families of my grandparents on my mom's side I believe came over in the later 1800s from Norway and settled in Wisconsin. Strum, Wisconsin to be exact which is near Eau Claire where Twiddler resides. My grandpa's last name is Olsen and his mother's name was Stomprud, both definite Norwegian names. My grandma's mom's last name was Finstad and her dad's was Benson. My grandparents moved down to Lisle, Illinois when my grandpa started driving for Yellow trucking after working for several companies in the Strum area including Chippewa Motor Freight.

My mom met my dad around 1981 I think. His side I believe is mostly English. My grandma says our ancestors came over on the Mayflower, or maybe ship shortly after. I don't know exactly how my grandparents on my dad's side met but most of our older family is downstate in the Bloomington area and they lived there early in my dad's life.

My parents met at what was called The Golden Bear restaurant at the time where my mom worked and I was born in 1988 and my sister in 1991.

In 1995 my grandparents on my mom's side moved back to Strum, Wisconsin after my grandpa retired from Yellow trucking. They also began taking care of my great grandma who lived to be 97. One of the best things I can think of now that I'm thinking about these things is the fact that she knew exactly who I was everytime up until she was about 96 and she would only see me 3 or 4 times a year at the most. That's just awesome. They don't make em like they used to!!! lol

We still go to Wisconsin to visit 2 or 3 times a year at least and my grandparents come to visit us at age 73 and 74 along with my aunt's and uncle's family maybe 4 or 5 times a year.

I know a lot more people on my moms side, they're also generally more fun to be around. There's only 5 close family members on my dad's side that live near us also.

My Packer fandom clearly comes from my Wisconsin roots. I've got family members that I every now and then get to see that live in Minnesota that are Viking fans, my Wisconsin family is all Packer fans, and mostly everybody here in Illinois in my family likes the Bears. I don't know one Lions fan or Colts fan. Oh yeah and I like the Bulls cause I grew up in the 90's watching them, I became a basketball fan on my own without the passing on of it from family members.

Well I never really made a post quite like that.

It's actually not that hard. I've been doing it off and on since high school. I'm related to Robert E. Lee, Henry Lee, Thomas More, King Richard of Scottland, and George Washington by marriage and adoption. Obviously the more rich your families background (mine isn't anymore but used to be), the better record keeping they are going to have. Also, western europeans tended to keep better records than eastern europeans.

If you have any black, hispanic, or native american in you, good luck. The majority of the time that came through some sort of rape or illicit affair, unless it occured within the last century or so.

It's good that you have interest though, best of luck, and like other posters have said, the local library is a good place to start.

I'm already in college. But I wouldn't do that if it was only going to serve me as an advantage. I'm white, there's no way around it. If I have a little bit of Native American in me than thats cool but I'm not going to use it to be looked at differently. I'll reserve that for the people who are actually more than 1/16th Native American.

My name is Ison (pronounced Eye-Sun/Eisen)...it is British, and originates from Scandinavia/Norse. There is only a small amount of Ison's in the whole of the U.S...and they are mostly all in Kansas, of all places. I have definately got some mixed roots...my dads side of the family were gypsies and are quite distinctive looking (in a good way) :) And my grandma on my moms side claims she is native American, but i dont believe her :D
