You guys in the Soccer Thread wanted it, you got it! I'm thinking we draft 11 starters and then 5 subs, possibly 7 as in Europe if people are willing to do the extra 2 rounds.

When signing up please put the name of the team you would like to represent in the draft and what formation you would like to play. You can change your formation if the draft isn't working out that well, just let me know.

i guess just say the good old 4-4-2 for now, i just saw that we could change.

UKfan
03-04-2008, 01:30 PM
Alright so we have 7 signups now, I know nvot will want in so that's 8, how many more do you guys want in, if any more?

Rob S
03-04-2008, 01:31 PM
i honestly dont care how many. Maybe keep it small so it wont die. I dont know how reliable the fantasy section has been lately tho since i havent been around.

Tobzilla
03-04-2008, 01:34 PM
I say the less people the better, I dont want this to take 2-3 weeks.

UKfan
03-04-2008, 01:35 PM
Perhaps just get nvot's signup in and go with 8 then, he suggested the draft in the first place so can't really get it going without him. I'm gonna be watching the Champions League for the next couple of hours anyway so it won't be starting for a little while.

Gay Ork Wang

Rob S

is this dynasty? either way i think i know my choice.

UKfan
03-04-2008, 04:42 PM
Ah, I forgot to mention that, it'll be a team that can win for the next three years, so a blend of youth and experience, and someone close to retiring will need to have a ready replacement on the bench.

Tobzilla
03-04-2008, 04:48 PM
lets go rob, 1st choice cant be that hard.

Rob S
03-04-2008, 04:54 PM
The best player in the world for my money, Lionel Messi.

UKfan
03-04-2008, 04:55 PM
Well, I'm going to take Cristiano Ronaldo, a perfect fit for my system and a guy who has scored 30 in 30 from the wing, he's been incredible.

I would take him 3rd.....I think he, messi, and ronaldo are clearly the top 3 in the world right now, especially in a draft that favors youth. With that said, I am going to sleep, so if it gets back to me remember I am on Ireland time now haha

I'll take the great Ronaldinho Gaucho

nvot9
03-04-2008, 08:28 PM
He fell to 4 cause he's sucked lately...not even starting regularly for Barcelona anymore, Iniesta's been outplaying him.

Still, when in form his talent is undeniable, so can't knock the pick, picked about where I expected.

I've got my guy though, praying he falls...

Doubt it unless its career threatening or something really serious. There's no way we can factor in Messi's injury if thats what your worried about, he'll be back in a month or so.

nope, I am moreso saying like for judging. Like, yeah Terry is probably the best defender in the world, but he is also one of the most injury prone in the world too.

nvot9
03-05-2008, 02:11 PM
Ok, well I'll take the player that should have been taken 4th overall, Zlatan Ibrahimovic

http://d.yimg.com/eur.yimg.com/ng/sp/empics/20071018/15/3135324743-soccer-uefa-european-championship-2008-qualifying-group-f-sweden-v.jpg

Perhaps it's a bit early to take a striker, but the talent here is undeniable, Zlatan undoubtedly is a top 5 player in the world. His footwork and ball skills match those of Cristiano Ronaldo, his pace matches that of Kaka, and his size and in the air skills match those of Emmanuel Adebayor. Overall the most dynamic pure striker in the game with tremendous production the last few years, Zlatan is an outstanding finisher and goal scorer and an equally terrific passer with great vision to find the open holes and send his fellow striker on a break away, whoever that may be. Perhaps the most dangerous player inside the box, Zlatan is always a huge threat and always must be accounted for by opposing teams.

UKfan
03-05-2008, 02:15 PM
I'm not a fan of Zlatan tbh, he was absolutely anonymous against us in the CL, but you can't argue against his Serie A production, (even if Serie A is struggling right now) so not a bad pick by any means.

Eh, I tend to weigh each players respective league play more than I do their tournament play, although perhaps it's best to do it the other way...in all honesty, I don't think it's fair to judge him in the one instance against Liverpool because he could have very easily had a bad stretch (as does everyone), although he was fairly nonexistent against them...

My opinion on him is more just about his overall abilities and how he's performed in all games, not specifying any one tournament or game or w/e, whether it be for Inter or for Sweden and I just think his overall blend of ability and size matched with his production, well it's pretty tremendous if you ask me. I think Kaka and C Ronaldo are definitely the top 2 in the world no doubt, with Messi right behind (although the most potential of the 3) and then Zlatan at that number 4 spot. I think he's actually better than Messi right now, people just tend to overhype Messi a bit due to his age and potential...

Regardless of if you like Messi or if you like Zlatan though, I think those two are absolutely the two best strikers in the world and there's no arguing against that...this coming from a fan of Adebayor.

UKfan
03-05-2008, 02:23 PM
It's cool, I wasn't trying to have a go or anything, I personally just have a poor opinion of him, but I can easily see an argument to take him high.

Ooo, me neither, I was just voicing my opinion....didn't mean it to come off that way.

Also, I basically just say how I feel about all the picks, but don't think that I think I'm a soccer guru or anything, I just like to voice my opinion about...well everything, prolly cause I like to hear myself talk, so for the future, don't think I'm insulting anyone's intelligence or anything like that... :)

Tobzilla

Yea...

I honestly have no idea who the best defender in the world is right now to be honest, kinda sad since I play defense too, I feel more and more soccer (at the pro level at least) is becoming an offensive game...

Gay Ork Wang
03-05-2008, 02:56 PM
thats why i build a defense first, there will be plenty of offensive talents left :)
its actually hard to say who is the best defender, i guess u can only name like a top5 and terry would be in there

Tobzilla
03-05-2008, 03:01 PM
I've heard that the argument can be made that Terry isn't even the best defender on Chelsea this year, Alex has had a great year.

UKfan
03-05-2008, 03:05 PM
Alex has improved vastly over the last few weeks when Terry has been out injured, but IMO Terry is the better defender still, it's telling that whenever a big team plays Chelsea, they always put Terry on the oppositions best attacker.

Yatta!
03-05-2008, 03:06 PM
Alex has definitely played well but if everyone was fit, he wouldn't be starting for Chelsea.

Guys, Renji is likely to be out for the night now as it's midnight nearly in Germany, and with it being late there I can't really skip him. So for tomorrow can you guys get big boards ready, maybe like 9 or 10 players and send them to me, just to try and get it going a bit quicker. Ok, you guys know my thing is to always explain all my picks, so here it is...

http://i.a.cnn.net/si/2006/writers/grant_wahl/06/20/inside.onalfo/t1_essien.jpg

Michael Essien is an animal. He's big, he's strong, he's powerful, he's got a rocket shot, he's a tremendous defender, and he's a work horse....he's Gennaro Gattuso with talent. Known as a "deep lying playmaker," Essien is typically a holding midfielder but his playmaking ability and vision allows him to be a huge offensive threat as well and play "box to box" for 90 minutes. For the third consecutive year he was nominated for Fifa Player of the Year and also for the third consecutive year, nominated for the Golden Ball award. All this prestige comes with veteran players, however he's still only 25. Essien will be a force in the back for me for many more years.

UKfan
03-05-2008, 05:51 PM
I don't want to seem like I am nitpicking, bu do you have a link for Essien being nominated for those awards? I just don't remember hearing about it. Good pick anyway

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Essien/

It's at the bottom under "Chelsea" you can also google..."2005 Fifa player of the year" etc. and you should be able to fine roughly the top 15 placements for each year.

:)

EDIT:

Wow I'm really abusing these smiley's right now.

And why the **** am I Man City lol? I like Benjani I guess?

You can change if you want, teams are just for identifying as much as anything. Thanks for the link as well, I don;t pay much attention to awards, I disagree with a lot of UEFA's, they have a heavy Spain / Italy bias IMO.

OK, I'm sure this pick will be criticized I'm going to take Phillip Lahm, left back for Bayern Munich. I feel there are VERY few good left back's in te world today, and so I am glad to snap up the guy who I consider to be the best.

Rob S
03-06-2008, 06:36 AM
i was going to take lahm as 1 of mine, nicely done.

Okay, well 1st I will take Robinho, who despite being hated on, has played like a top 5 player in the world this year, that is pretty much fact. He has carried Real and Brazil on his back a few times, he has been simply amazing and is finally realizing his potential to become on of the world's elite.

UKfan

Sergio Ramos- god i hate real, but he has been simply amazing and has cemented his status as the premier RB in the world imo

03-06-2008, 06:43 AM
OK, well with my second pick of the day I am going to take a guy who in my opinion is VERY underrated. Javier Mascherano. He'll be the defensive midfielder in my 4-5-1, and will be a key component in my team, breaking up opposition attacks and man marking the oppositions best midfielders if necessary.

Some picks are really surprising me, having never done one of these before. I thought people would take attacking players first. Having said that all the picks are understandable ie Lahm, my philosophy was gonna be to take wing backs late as the second tier players are all similar in quality.

UKfan
03-06-2008, 07:46 AM
I decided to go full back as I think there is more depth in midfield and up front, and I have a couple of steals in mind haha, I play left back as well, so I guess my valuation of Lahm might be higher than others lol.

Ok, I had to think about this pick a lot, it was between about 3 or 4 people for me, and in the end I went with youth. The other people I was thinking of have been considered amongst the best but are over the hump right now and are "washed up." That said, my pick is CM Andrea Pirlo

I can not believe he fell, and I also cannot believe he's 28, I thought he was in his 30's. Pirlo is very easily one of the most threatening players in the world right now. His dribbling is not as elusive as Cristiano's, but as far as practicality goes, he's right up there with him. His passing and vision qualifies him as a premier playmaker, he is able to thread the needle and send players on runs that often result in goals. He is far and away the MOST intelligent player in the world, no doubt in my mind, and his influence on his team is extremely vast. I think the opposite can be said as well, that his ability might be determined by his teammates, but in a star-filled draft like this, the team will undoubtedly be good and his ability will be utilized to the utmost. As far as set pieces go, Pirlo is second only to Juninho. Overall, his intelligence, vision, and passing/playmaking ability fit the CM position exactly.

Ill pick the French heir of Zinedine Zidane Franck Ribéry.
http://p3.focus.de/img/gen/t/w/HBtw8eqA_Pxgen_r_311xA.jpg
he might be better as a attacking midfielder but he is also a great winger and thats what i needed atm. He is one of the main reasons Bayern Munich only lost 1 this year and he is well known for his dribbling skills but also he is nice passes. He and Riquelme will work togehter just fine. I was thinking about iniesta but decided he wouldnt fit my 4-1-2-1-2 system with Riquelme being the attacking midfielder

i really hoped i could get a steal with Mertesacker in the next 2 rounds, never thought he and Lahm are so acknowledged world wide.
Mertesacker is a beast though. In the WC he won like 80% of his one on ones and he commits a foul every 120 mins which is pretty darn good for a centre back

Yatta!
03-07-2008, 09:18 AM

I'm bored so I guess I'll explain my last three picks.

http://i.a.cnn.net/si/2006/writers/gabriele_marcotti/02/17/etoo.chelsea/p1_eto'o_0217.jpg

Samuel Eto'o is a prolific scorer and definitely one of the worlds best strikers. I feel that with the 14th pick overall he was one of the best playmakers on the board. He's missed some time in the past because of injuries and because of this I believe that he's never quite emerged from under Ronaldinho's shadow at Barca, and perhaps not given all the credit he's deserved.

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/44434000/jpg/_44434416_benzema416.jpg

My third pick was Karim Benzema. Some may think that he was selected a little premature, and that's probably true, but here is a young striker with all the potential in the world. At age 20 he's already dominating the French league and will undoubtedly get even better. I also like Benzema for his versatility, he can play either wing in my offense as well as the central role.

http://netlife.vietnamnet.vn/Library/Images/58/2007/09/18/11/11/Daniel%20Alves.jpg

With my fourth pick I figured it was time to select my first defender, Daniel Alves was my choice. Like Benzema, I love the versatility that Alves brings to my squad. I will have him playing Right back where he possesses the ability come up on the attack and dominate in the back. It's been said that full backs are hard to come by in the game today, I feel that he was one of the best still on the board.

Rob S
03-07-2008, 02:27 PM
Alright, well I will take Diego Ribas. I really think he is one of the most underrated players in the world right now. Tearing up Germany and will only get better.

Also, give me Gigi Buffon. I used to prefer Casillas to Buffon, but I think that Gigi has proven that he is the best keeper in the world, the guy just never seems to make a mistake, which Casillas does occasionaly.

Well, I think it's pretty much unanimous that Cech is one of the worlds top three keepers along with Buffon and Casillas. I didn't really want to select a keeper here, but with the selection of Buffon I have a feeling the best of the best will be gone before my next pick.

Well, speaking personally Totti just doesn't fit my system really, I see him as a guy who plays either up front in a 4-4-2, or in the hole in a 4-4-1-1, there is really no place to put him in a 4-5-1 that I am running IMO, he's a nice talent though.

4 - 2 - 1 - 2 - 1

Cech going 2nd for GK was shocking to me. I think it is pretty clear that buffon and casillas are the top 2 now. Cech has fallen off as of late.

If this draft continues the way I see it going, I think I'll be pretty pleased with my team, but I worry how others are going to perceive it, as I tend to argue with my friends a lot about soccer, I have pretty strong opinions :D

Hmm, not really, I'd say the only thing is what rob said, that Casillas should have been above Cech, but i'd still prolly have Cech as my 3rd one.

Well, speaking personally Totti just doesn't fit my system really, I see him as a guy who plays either up front in a 4-4-2, or in the hole in a 4-4-1-1, there is really no place to put him in a 4-5-1 that I am running IMO, he's a nice talent though.

Anyway thefalconer is up, then Mr. Stiller.

I disagree, I don't think he'd be that good in a 4-4-2 but I think he'd be ideal for a 4-5-1 or any formation that would involve him as the lone "striker." There's no one better than him up front, I think if he was a paired forward/winger, he wouldn't be that successful, but up front by himself he'd flourish.

Keep in mind that Cech plays in the EPL. He plays the fastest, most talented competition (no disrespect to Spain or Italy) in the most offensive league of them all. Also, it's just a personal preference; I think Cech is amazing.

To me Cech is probably #2 or #3. Casillas is clearly my number one.

I think I worded what I meant to say before poorly, I meant for the type of team that I am going to be running, I don't think he could fit in very well, as with having Cristiano Ronaldo on the wing and another wide man to be named later I will be dealing more in getting crosses into the box and having my striker play as more of a target man as opposed to coming deep for the ball and getting other midfielders involved as Totti does. I still prefer him to play as he did in the days of Batistuta and Montella at Roma, and that was in a 4-4-2, 3-5-2 or 4-4-1-1, and play sort of in the hole, but he can play in a 4-5-1 fine, just not my 4-5-1, I need Adebayor's aeriel prowess.

Ah I see I got Vidic with my pick, UKFan nipped in with Carragher just before. Really like Vidic as a Man Utd fan, he is one of my favourite players and a definite hit with the crowd. He is an old fashion defender and not afraid to put his body on the line.

Kinda disappointed I missed the Goalkeeper rush, I don't think anyone else comes close to the ones who have already been selected.

The way you worded it this time makes more sense. I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "the hole" but if I personally think he's more damaging as a lone striker, I'm going to be using a very, very odd formation but he fits it perfectly.

And I agree, Adebayor is the ****. :)

As for missing out on the goalie rush, I'm not too mad at all. Yea I'd rather have one of the 3, but I definitely can think of 4 or 5 goalies I'd still love to have and would still have a very successful team with...

Vidic is AWESOME. I love him so much, he was on my list after Zambrotta, but I had to take Zambrotta over him.

I'll take defensive midfielder Danielle De Rossi.

At the age of 24, De Rossi has quickly emerged as on of the world's best defensive midfielders, perhaps only Essien is better at the position right now, than him. A case could be made for Gattuso, but I think De Rossi's much more technically sound. Cambiasso could also be considered, but I feel De Rossi can provide more than just defense, more so than Cambiasso. An extremely aggressive player and brilliant tackler, De Rossi is a nuisance to every team's offense and will go very well next to Essien. I know this is my second defensive midfielder, but I've got a plan, trust me.

Gay Ork Wang
03-08-2008, 08:28 AM
It is time to get a forward and I'll pick

Carlos Tévez
With Adebayor gone i think ill go with a fast pass offense. I think Tevez will really help and benefit from the Playmaker Riquelme and Ribery. He wont win the jump balls but he will be agile and speedy and again he will benefit from the incredible passes out of the midfield

Since my pick this round was stolen :P (Nasri), I'm going to take a different french protégé, that being Hatem Ben Arfa, left winger from Lyon. No idea what public opinion is of him, but I personally am a BIG fan of his, here is a vid of him for proof of his skills: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jV2jXW1H9E

Well I can tell you guys he's 21, he's already played for the French national team, he scored 15 in 22 games for the French U-17 team and in many places he is rated as highly as Karim Benzema. Watch the vid I posted before and you will see, his quick, two footed, good crosser, good finisher, everything you could want IMO, I really am a fan of his.

UKfan
03-08-2008, 01:46 PM
Oh, and Man U have enquired about him and Benzema, and when you consider the players Man U already have, that says a lot IMO.
