I have a feeling we see a lot of cuts, some not expected. Especially as Bobby Petrino tries to mold the team around him vision, and expels Jim Mora's 'guys.' My early predictions:

Matt Lehr
Eric Beverly
Jason Webster
Allen Rossum
Ed Hartwell
Ike Reese

I think they have an outside chance of getting a 3rd for Hartwell. If they don't I still think they cut him afterwards. I honestly don't see Kerney getting resigned, he'll want top dollar and he's an aging DE with season ending injury in his past.

I agree with everyone you have up there.

I think Lehr is good depth for a solid price, and doubt Webster is cut this year unless a good CB falls. He should be a very good nickle.

Matt Lehr is a poor fit for the blockers, Petrino/Jackson's offense wants.

Jason Webster is an even worse fit for Mike Zimmer's man to man cover corners.

Webster can cover man. He is physical for his size and although he lacks elite speed it is sufficient and gets beat deep less than any of our other DBs.

Lehr is over 300 and should be a better fit than for the ZBS. Always looked out of place to me. Fine depth at C and G.

What?? Webster was burned just as bad as everyone last year, if not more. He's got to go.

Webster is TRASH...

Yeah, in no way can Webster cover man. The only way he could was sitting back in a deep cover 3, allowing the receiver to catch slants and outs all day against him.

I just don't think it would be easy to have a guy better than him at nickel. As a starter he is bad but as a nickel I think he is fine for a year, while we groom a rookie.

Webster is bad. Anywhere you put him. I'd rather Chris Cash as my nickle.

Webster can cover? WOW i always called what he did ATTEMPTING TO COVER... ive been watchin him play for his entire falcons career and apart from being a solid tackler on larger guys with little quickness id go as far as to say he is an ATTEMPTED CB

As for a better nickel back hmm id put the following unrpoven vets in place of webster at nickel

LOL. That's awesome.

Jason Webster is just allows way too many catches. He's a very solid tackler, but we need someone to cut off some routes from these guys, and he's just not it.

Webster and Hartwell cost CAP space more to cut than to keep this year.

We will hold on to both simply because we don't have the CAP space to spare.

Do you have a source that backs up that information by any chance?

Gandy is going to save us a pure 4.0, and no player costs more if you cut him, it will be over time.

The Atlanta Falcons today announced the release of LB Edgerton Hartwell and LB Ike Reese.

Hartwell, 6-1, 250, is a six-year veteran from Western Illinois. He played in 13 games with 11 starts in two seasons with the Falcons after being acquired as an unrestricted free agent from the Baltimore Ravens in 2005. He recorded 56 tackles last year in six starts and 31 stops in 2005 through five starts. Hartwell suffered an Achilles' injury after five games in 2005, ending his first season in Atlanta, and had arthroscopic knee surgery on both knees before the 2006 season. He is now free to sign with any other NFL club. He does not come off the Falcons salary cap until June 2.

Reese, 6-2, 222, is a nine-year veteran from Michigan State. Reese played in 32 games in Atlanta after being signed as an unrestricted free agent from the Philadelphia Eagles in 2005 and recorded 22 special teams tackles.

First cuts announced. What a bust Ed Hartwell was.

I fell bad for Hartwell.. he wa sso good at Baltimore, and came to ATL and all of the fans were so happy.. Then he had a run of very bad luck with getting hurt. Then he gets cut after he didn't play last year.. I think it was a good idea but i fell bad for him.

This is AMAZING! Well...now we can say we have a pretty much lock for spending a pick on a LB now. Could we considering Willis? Wow...what a nasty addition that would be. But then again, maybe Beck is ready, or maybe Brooking will be MLB and Demorrio at Weak...

or maybe this just means what I thought it did. we are going to sign Demorrio Williams to a 4-5 year deal to be our Derrick Brooks. we will move Brooking to MLB for the rest of his career here and have Jordan Beck as our nickelbacker and eventual replacement to Kerney. we need some OLB's and I think it would nto be a stretch to see both of our 4ths spent on some GA linebackersi n KaMichael Hall and Tony Taylor.

Yea thats exactly what the falcons are gonna do... Draft Willis in the 1st round and not get a need.

I love how you are trying to talk down to me. If Zimmer sees Brooking as a WLB and Beck as not good enough to be a starter, then guess what...MLB is a need. Quit being a child.

I'm not tryin to talk you down, i'm just sayin that I highly doubt we get a LB in the 1st round.. now that i read it back it did come out very sarcastic, sorry bout that

The Falcons put a pretty nice tender on Demorrio Williams. So that lends credence to the thought that the team will put Keith Brooking at MLB, with Williams at WLB, Boley (stud muffin) at SLB.

Nice job calling Hartwell and Reese, Shiver.

I am a bit surprised the team didn't have more cuts. Maybe after O.T.As? Probably it's because the team never intended on making a big splash in free agency. The team might be content going into the draft with Mughelli and Horn.

I do not think Lehr will be cut unless we can secure someone like Dielman in FA. If that happens i expect us to sign someone for cheap to develop and activate Clabo and Ojinakka as depth for the majority of the games next year . Knowing McKay's draft tendancies, I think he is going to go after someone like Levi Brown, After securing the most glaring holes in FA. If we can secure him and possibly a solid NB (Johnathan Wade) and a solid Return man (Yamon Figurs) in the draft I think Webster, Rossum, and Gandy will all be gone as of June first.

It sounds like Reggie Kelly is going to be signed. If so, Eric Beverly is cut.

According to a friend of mine (a Bengals fan) Reggie Kelly is a beast. So it sounds like he would definately make a nice add.

Also it doesn't make a ton of sense to me why we didn't make more cuts either. I coulda have sworn Rossum or Webster would have been long gone. Hopefully it comes later.

O.K. I missed the Hartwell one...........

That's a lot of dead CAP money, but I guess he didn't have a position he could adequately play in Zimmers def.

Beverly will be gone as soon as Kelly signs.

I think ROssum will stay around until the latter parts of camp. Jennings will have every opportunity to beat him out.
