just everybody grouped together, which team comes out with the fastest mean of speed

San Diego in my opinion. They have a bunch of freaks.

If you added up the 40 times of all 53 players my guess is that it'd be the Colts.

Maybe the Raiders?

Dont know about team but Raiders no doubt have the fastest secondary.

I really think it is San Diego. They are loaded with great athletes at almost every position.

RB-LT
WR-Chambers/Davis
TE-Gates (more athletic than fast)
OL-McNeil
DL-Olshansky/Castillo are very athletic 300 pounders
LB-Merriman
DB-Cromartie

A look at the Raiders:

CB: Deangelo Hall (4.32?)
CB: Fabian Washington (4.29)
CB: Stanford Routt (4.32)
S: Michael Huff (ran sub-4.4 I believe)
LB: Thomas Howard (4.46 40)
LB: Kirk Morrison

Even Nnamdi Asomugha ran a 4.4 40.

On the offense:
RB: Justin Fargas (4.38 I believe)
RB: Michael Bush (expected to run a 4.4something without leg injury)
WR: Drew Carter (4.38?)
WR: Johnnie Lee Higgins (didn't run a fast 40, but explodes on the football field)
WR. Javon Walker (4.38)--too bad this guy isn't actually healthy...

I think the Chargers/Colts are the fastest. Chargers have the fastest overall offense with the Colts having the fastest defense. The Vikings have a fast offense too when you consider Jackson/Peterson/Berrian. The raiders defense with the secondary and Howard are near the top. I think the Bills also deserve to be mentioned.

collectively, as an entire team, its gotta be the Colts. the raiders have the fastest secondary, but the Colts are fast from top to bottom on both sides of the ball.

honorable mention to SD i guess. although theyre just fast for a 3-4 defense, but collectively not as fast as everyone is making them out to be.

I bet the Raiders have the best timed speed but probably not the best football speed, thanks to Al Davis.

Geo
03-19-2008, 04:37 PM
The Colts are probably the lightest team in the league, including offense and defense, so that's attributable to them being potentially the fastest.

Jones was more quick than fast. He had absolutely no top gear. Losing Berrian is somewhat balanced out by getting rid of Moose. I'd bet Tommie Harris could beat Moose in a sprint.

The Raiders take it just because of their defense. Burgess, Howard, Morrison are one of the faster players at their positions. Their secondary doesnt need to be explained. [I am for sure going to start a franchise with them in Madden 09]

The Falcons used to be good with Abraham, Coleman, Boley, D. Williams, DeAngelo Hall, Mike Vick, Warrick Dunn, Jerious Norwood.

But I digress.

there is no correction, it was just a confusing statement. 'They are first down the river or at least right behind stream' is a little odd and so i put that referring the noise that Tim Allen makes at the end of the intro of Home Improvement, the television show.

i prefer strength over speed but thats just me.

and when i say that, i don't mean i like slow guys, just that id rather have a 245lb LB who runs a 4.7 opposed to a 225 lb LB who runs a 4.5.

i like bullrushers over speedrushers, power olines over finesse ones, strong RBs opposed to skatbacks, etc

I doubt that many wouldn't prefer that in a hypothetical situation. I would figure though, on average, 20 extra pounds is going to slow a player more than .2 seconds, assuming they are the same height of course.

Huff ran about a 4.34 and Schweigert ran a 4.47. Jarrod Cooper ran a 4.45, Gibril Wilson ran a 4.47. They do have a fast D and secondary..
Incidentally, the oldest guy on the Raiders' roster is Tim Dwight (one of probably the 3 fastest players in the NFL when he came out).

Every Charger got named except Quentin Jammer! This guy is a legit athlete too; big and fast, hence the 5th overall draft pick. The way he's played at CB the last couple years, it's tough to find people saying Jammer isn't living up to his draft status anymore.

Anthony Waters is on the Chargers too, and it won't be too long until he overtakes Matt Wilhelm.

I'm gonna take a different tack. My guess, if we're talking about the team as a whole, would be Denver. If we line up every player on the roster in a relay style race, what matters is isn't who's got the fastest player, it's who's got the greatest margin. And positionally, the margin in the skill positions and secondary is 4.3 to 4.6. The margin on the offensive line is 4.8-5.8. Denver has a traditionally more athletic O line than other teams, so I think they'd benefit most from the margin.

yeah, i guess my statement is inaccurate, its difficult to quantify what im trying to say in #s.

and i guess its also somewhat inaccurate because while generally speaking i feel that way, it really depends on the scheme at hand. i prefer strong 3-4 defenses and strong power running offenses, so thats where my ideologies come from, but i don't want big slower guys running a Tampa 2 for example so its not black and white.

my 2 favorite defensive schemes have always been the 3-4 and its variations and the 46 and its variations.

OMGZ he should have 110 speed in Maddenz!

This clip reminds me of how ignorant EA and football fans are. I've been watching Hester return kicks practically my whole life and he's far from the fastest player in football. He's a great returner because of his agility, acceleration and vision, not because he outruns people.

Giordano is just a beast.....he must've stretched and warmed up so well to have that speed on the first play of the game. I wonder why he doesn't start jared ;)

Don't be ignorant. Only Jordy Nelson gets 110s in Madden.

But like you said, Hester's straight line speed is average to above average at best. However, his initial burst, acceleration, vision and agility are rivaled by very few.
