View Full Version : Best kicker in the NFL

NFL kickers are underrated. People aren't talking about them as much as they deserve. ( just my opinion) Bironas had great season last year, and he could very much establish himself as the best kicker in the NFL next season.

This must of course be a rhetorical question. As we all know the answer.

Lawrence Tynes, but of course! The Scottish cannot be contested with their ability to miss extra points during the regular season, only to hit a solid brick of ice 49 yards to get you in the Super Bowl. Hah!

That my friend, is an awesome picture. You can even see Strahan's gap, which makes it that much better.

His hammies have been iffy for a couple years now. Still, if you have to knock one through with the game on the line, Elam is dependable.

Bironas is a scoring machine for a team that doesn't score often. I'd say he's at least the most valuable kicker for his team. The 60 yard kick he made two years ago to beat my beloved Colts was a hell of a kick. I'd vote for the guy.

I'll take Matt Bryant's 62 yarder against McNabb and the Iggles any day. The look on McNabb's face was priceless.

Bironas is probably the best right now. As a studier of kickers (being a former one), I've come to rank them:

1) Bironas
2) Brown
3) Nugent (skills not performance necessarily)
4) Vinatieri
5) Gould

Geo

Regular season, probably Bironas. Or Robbie Gould of the Bears.

But I know who I want come playoffs time. He should change his number from 4 to 6 though, because that's how many rings he's going to retire with imo.

He missed a 29 yard field goal that cost the Colts the game vs the Chargers (and missed 4 out of 6 field goals in a 2 game span that included that game), and didn't hit a field goal longer than 39 yards last season.

I like Gould a lot, but he isn't very good from beyond 50 yards.

Then again, nobody is good from beyond 50 yards in Chicago. Gould is up for an extension soon, I'm thinking he'll probably get a little more than what Elam just got from the Falcons.

And then the playoffs arrived, and he booted a 46-yarder right down the middle with five to ten yards to spare. ;)

Lindell is a beast from 50+, and he's not doing it in great conditions. No embarassing missed PAT on his resume, either. One of the best FG% in the league since his first year in Buffalo, I'd imagine. Not quite the top kicker, but he gets a lot of praise from me. Sometimes overlooked in our group of perennially great STers.

My answer is Josh Brown, I've always been a fan. Even after pulling a DX after tackling Hester.

I dont think Bironis is the best kicker in the NFL.

Remember when Neil Rackers had that historical year acouple years back? Does anyone say hes the best still?

Kickers come and go like flies on poop. They are very inconsistent year in and year out. That is why Adam Vinitieri is the best IMO, and is one of maybe 2 kickers in the last 20 years that will make the hall of fame.

I know my homerism is kicking in with my pick, but I would say that Phil Dawson is one of the best in the league right now. He's not often talked about because of his lack of FGs. But this year has to have been one of the best ever for a kicker. He hit the crossbar twice this year and both went in! Not the mention those amazing kicks in the snow game vs. Buffalo. Wind speeds were up to 40 MPH that day! He is also 6th on the all-time accuracy list with an 82.7%

The week before the Ravens game he missed a 52 yard kick to win the game. His previous long was only 45 yards and he cant even do our kickoffs anymore because his leg strength leaves the ball around the 10 yard line every time. Unless the game was online how often did we even attempt a 50 yard FG?

Pretty sure that doesnt qualify you as one of the best. But he did have a solid and entertaining year.

Yes he was short on a 52 yarder at Heinz field. A field where NO NFL kicker has made a kick over 50 yards in its history. And the reason his kicksoff are short is because he kicks them high which has caused only 2 kicks to be returned for tds against him in his career. And how often does ANY team attempt a 50+ yrd FG unless the game is on the line or at the end of a half?

I cant win! You seem convinced Phil Dawson is the best kicker or one of them in the NFL.

I guess the only arguement I have left is FG%, which he finished 12th in the league at. The BEST kickers in a given year should at least be in the top 5, should they not?

But im sure youll find a way to twist it, by not counting a FG because it was kicked on actual grass like Hines Field, or you might not even count the one in Baltimore because it was windy?

Did you forget the one against the Raiders that he failed to get projection on?

I think your argueing for Phil Dawson not because he might be one of the best but more so because your a Browns fan?

Out of 76 kickoffs Phil only had 5 touchbacks all year. 3 of then were at mile high which I think we can agree get thrown out the door.

The BEST kickers can get the ball high and still put them in or around the endzone. With the money Phil made last year I think the Browns deserve that.

Ok kickoffs are not his strong point, but in the 9 yrs hes been kicking for us only 2 have been returned for tds. I have to believe that he has a part in that; along with the good sp teams we have had. Plus, him being a kicker, I don't really care about kickoff dist. only if he makes kicks when they count for points.

And you want to go by fg percentage? Ok. But instead of season to season, how about career. In which he ranks 6th ALL TIME.(as of 2006)

All in all I can say that whenever Phil goes into the game I have no doubt that the balls going to go through the uprights. So in my mind that makes him the best.

PS: When you say "projection". Do you mean protection? If so then how can a blocked fg be the kickers fault if the blocker get blasted 5 yrds into the backfield?
PPS: Take away blocks and he goes 26 of 28 92% tied NFL lead.
PPPS: How does he have touch backs at mile high? We didnt play the Broncos in the regular season.

Jeff Reed is underrated. He has to kick 8 games+ a Year in Heinz field (Worst field to kick in).

He almost.. I repeat ALMOST had a 65-66 Yarder IN DENVER.

He was 23/25 last year, 92%, 48 Long, Missed one between 40-49, and one over 50 (The 65 yarder in Denver that was just a smidgen to the left). He was also 44/44 on Xp.

"We didnt play the Broncos in the regular season."

The stats included our 4 preseason games.

"I don't really care about kickoff dist. only if he makes kicks when they count for points. "

I dont think we can discount a very important job the kicker performs. Field position is a key eliment to special teams. If you want to talk about the best player at their position all of the jobs duties have to be in the discussion.

Lets get back to the main topic of this thread.......BEST KICKER IN THE NFL.
Do you honestly think it is Phil Dawson or did you just throw his name out there because he is the kicker of your favorite team?

In reality and statistically Phil does not even rank in the top 10.

I think it is only us Browns fans that love him, in which case that is not a good enough arguement for his name to be mentioned in this thread.

No offense, but so what? Almost only counts in horseshoes and handgrenades. Plus the fact that it was at Denver really doesn't mean anything considering it's probably easier to kick there with the thin air.
