Some of the better tidbits...

* Still want to take an OL in the draft; don’t know if it’ll be early or late. Noted success of some some fifth-round or later picks.

* Rams delegation has visited with DE Chris Long, OT Jake Long, DE Vernon Gholston. Devaney says these visits have “reconfirmed everything we thought about these guys.” Said they really liked them as people. Feel good about all o’ them.

* Rams will visit LSU next week (DT Glenn Dorsey) and then go to SoCal to see DE Sedric Ellis. They’re excited to see Dorsey; love his personality — but of course teams have questions about Dorsey’s old stress-fracture injury. Devaney agreed it is “scary to use a high pick on a DT.” Why? Because so many have to change defensive systems when they enter the pros…. he cited Dwayne Robertson (Jets bust) as an example.

* Disagreed that Chris Long is just a try-hard, effort, high-motor guy only. Says he has real talent and will get sacks and you can win championships with him. Compared him to Patrick Kerney but touted Long’s athletic ability.

* Gholston: most explosive defensive talent from a pass rush standpoint… has the “one dimension that every team craves, an explosive pass rusher.” Adds, however, that Gholston, while respectable against the run, wouldn’t be as strong against the run as Chris Long.

* Sports Illustrated compared Chris Long to Lawrence Taylor… Devaney used the old Lloyd Bentsen line (on Dan Quayle). Says he knows LT, his Redskins teams competed against LT, and Chris Long is no LT.

(Sidebar: the Rams really do like Chris Long; our Jim Thomas, Rams beatwriter, thinks the Rams like C. Long the best at this stage).

* OT Jake Long … says he is not as athletic as Joe Thomas, who was a top five pick last season… but points out that Thomas was an A+ athlete… says J. Long is a B+ and that’s plenty good enough, especially since he’s so intense and competitive.

If they push O-Line down the list they could go

1. DE
2. WR
3. S

I am starting to think they won't take an O-lineman in the first two rounds unless somebody really slides. My thinking is that the only starting position that isn't settled on the offensive line is C (Setterstrom or Incognito will be RG), so they can get a quality interior lineman later in the draft than the 2nd pick of the 2nd round. I think they will come out of the draft with at least 1 DE, 1 WR, 1 DB, 1 LB, and 1 OL. I wouldn't be surprised if they draft 3 or more OL though, just in the later rounds. I know they still desire a top CB, but they aren't really going to find an immediate top CB in the draft. The only way that happens is if they can get Sheppard. The price tag on Hall was a high 2nd and a conditional, if Sheppard's price drops to a high 3rd and a conditional or late pick the Rams should definitely do it, especially since it's risky to count on Brown.

Notes from Jim Thomas' chat on 1380:

Would be surprised if Caldwell isn't signed by the end of the week. Macklin is a good 4th CB that the Rams need.

No real interest in Hartwig, questions about his personality.

Says Chris Long worked out strictly as a linebacker at his pro day so Miami could take a look at him as a linebacker in a 3-4.

pretty much everyone in the Rams organization is going to Dorsey's workout and if he checks out healthy he will be the #1 player on the Rams board.

Rams like Gholston but they don't know if he's worth taking at #2

Haslett mad about Chillar leaving, but the Rams think Culberson can be the starting SLB next season. Rams will probably back linebacker depth in the 4th-5th round.

Wroten has been working out at Rams camp everyday this offseason and maybe a light bulb has come on.

Rams trying to trade Byrd for a low draft pick (6th-7th round) if they can't get one, he won't see mid-may.

Rams don't view Safety as a huge need, they love Chavous. Which I don't understand, yes they love him for his work ethic, his study of the game and blah blah blah but isn't that just what Isaac Bruce is? and look what they did to him.

And Bruce was also still a good number 2 WR, while Chavous is just a terrible starting SS.

The more we've learned about the Bruce situation, the more it seems like it was simply a matter of them not wanting to devote more than $3 million in money and cap room to a guy who would have been the #3 wide receiver in '08.

We will take Chris Long or Vernon Gholston, and thats a fact.

If Rams stay at #2 and Dolphins take Chris. The Rams will take Jake Long or Glenn Dorsey over Gholston and that's a fact.

Rams won't take Gholston unless they trade down and that's a fact.

But that wouldn't make Yodachu very happy.

Who cares. It's a smart move by the Rams.
