Where's the Phil Keaggy love?
Most underrated guitarist of all time, John Squire of the Stone Roses. The man was godlike on the guitar. Listen to "Breaking into Heaven", "This is the One", "Waterfall", "Elephant Stone" and the ending to "I Am the Resurrection". Incredible.

Cobain is one of the better vocalists who play guitar.
But that's like saying that, because the Patriots' QB/RB combination is overall very good, the RB must be one of the best.

Maybe, but it's tough for me to give Clapton a ton of credit when he spent most his career playing blues, and I don't think he ever hit a point where I'd consider him a better blues guitarist than Johnson, and Johnson was doing in 40 years earlier.

Agreed. Johnson built blues guitar from the ground up. And he probably has done it better than anyone else ever.
That being said.
1) Robert Johnson
2) SRV
3) Clapton
4) Hendrix.
NOW. i won't put petrucci, vai, malmsteen on a list of best guitarists. nor would i ever put anyone from avenged sevenfold on a list of anything that has to do with good.
But.
Jack White is probably top 20 guitarists to record music. John Fruscante is also WAY up there. Jaco is up there too. But **** you people who think bass isn't important nor a guitar. Jaco killed guitarists.
If you've never heard Jaco. Listen to "Weather Report" (a band).
I'll get better guitarist selections soon. I promise.
I.E. Alex Pareja from the number twelve looks like you. Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth... How about J Mascias from Dinosaur Jr.?
