View Full Version : What Country Would You Like to Live In?

So this is not a country bashing thread, but what country might it be???

For me it would be a toss-up between Canada or Japan. Tokyo seems like a cool city, except it is hella expensive and crowded. Canada seems nice, but I'd have to stay away from French Canada.

Hmm.

Australia and Italy would be great.

However, I like the idea of Tokyo, Japan. Probably because I love their culture, and basically would fit right into that. I don't mind the bustling streets and cramped living spaces, so I'd be fine living in the city.

Oh, but Italy might have the determining factor. Being Italian, I would fit right in. I love the damn food!

Well... I spent better part of last year Living in Italy. It was great. From all the countries I have visited in my life it would have to be a toss up between Germany, Italy, or Sweden. Roma kicks ass because you can basically do whatever you please and it is full of history. However, it's dirty as heck. Stockholm is probably my favorite city outside of the United States, just awesome. However, Bavaria is my favorite region I have ever visited and Oktoberfest just puts it over the edge. Not to mention I'm almost 100% Germany, so I'll go with Germany. The only real downside to German I found were some of the people weren't too friendly, then again I'm from the Midwest and not many people are as nice as Midwesterners.

With that said, the United States is still the best country, and I have visited most of Europe and much of the latin countries. Asia is next.

Yeah. When I went there, it was with a group from my school, and we didn't stay at a resort or anything, we actually lived with a family for a week in the little town of Consuelo, Sammy Sosa's birthplace, which is I guess 45 minutes from Santo Domingo and a half hour from the provincial capital, San Pedro de Macoris. It was so amazing, because my roommate and I are two big white dudes who did not speak any spanish beyond Hola! and Como esta? and they spoke absolutely no English, yet they welcomed us into their home, gave us both our own rooms to sleep in, even though it meant they needed to put 3 adults and a baby into one room. They also fed us very well, let us share their drinking water, and for dinner a few times they even got us Pepsi to drink. The other people in the town were very approachable and kind, too. Canadians are known for their kindnss, but really, the Dominicans we met are far kinder than the average Canadian.

because in fact they have the worst economy , worst import/export .... bad job-situation and if you take out Lissabon and maybe Porto the country all and all is like third world. they were lucky the EU incorporate them , so they are looking forward to stabilize their circumstances. they are also the country with the lowest deposit in the EU exchequer

Italy is overrated. Food and weather are great but italians are very very unfriendly.

I have been there. I haven't been to southern Italy...and while Venice is beautiful and home of things like the Guggenheim museum (<3)...I would never live there. It is kind of dirty, people aren't the nicest and it smells..I took the train in from Podova everyday to Venice, and you could smell it from about 5 miles out. I don't know. I wouldn't mind living there, but it definitely is different from what I expected.

My favorite thing about Venice is watching speed boats hall ass through the narrow canals. Its pretty insane.

Great place to visit but would be pretty bad to live there. Very expensive, almost all Italians there hate americans unless you are buying something from them, but still is a fascinating to visit.

As another poster said Florence is probably the best city in Italy IMO.

My Venice experience was fairly short lived, but I found it pretty unpleasant compared to the rest of my experience in Italy. The novelty of the canals is cool, but less so when sections of the city smell like a sewer.

However, when I travel, I usually try and stay as far away from tourist spots as possible.

TitleTown088

However, when I travel, I usually try and stay as far away from tourist spots as possible. That's very difficult to do in Venice, but it can be done. I found a couple places that weren't too touristy and they were my favorite spots. As a general( and obvious) guide, just stay away from the Grand Canal.

Also, on another posters comment. People around the world don't hate Americans like the media and such would lead you to believe. Most of them are nice people just like here in the US, and just like in the US they're are some dickheads. The only person I met that was blatantly cruel to me for being an American was some girl at Oktoberfest. She called me a stupid American in more derogatory terms, and needless i was a little drunk and had some world war comments for her, not a good idea on my part. However, i let it slip due to the booze and her pissing me off.

Wouldn't want to live anywhere else in the world.

I've always wanted to visit/spend some time in Japan.

Gotta learn more of the language first, though.

It helps, especially if you're not going to be spending most of your time in a main island major city, but almost everyone in Japan knows American culture (including speaking English) much better than you'd expect.

I'm seriously considering moving to Ireland. Might want to go visit or something before I actually decide to do so. I'd just love to live in most places in Europe as well. France would be good since I speak the language pretty well.
