I don't know jack about VW diesels but with most diesels they're upgraded a lot on chips/programmers.
Before you do ANYTHING... I'd check out this forum:

Read around on there, post up. Before doing anything to your car performance wise it's always best to educate yourself on it and what products are the best bang for your buck. Plus you can find which combos are proven.
