"NBC has greenlighted the long-rumored spinoff from the Emmy-winning comedy. NBC is expected to make the announcement at its upfront news conference Wednesday.
The project has been ordered to series and will launch after NBC's broadcast of the Super Bowl on Feb. 1. It will air after the original "Office" in a 9-10:00 p.m. Thursday block.
According to news reports in the fall, NBC had been developing an episode of the hit comedy to serve as a backdoor pilot for a spinoff."

How do we feel about this?

If it's the Karen spinoff, I'm not terribly excited. Will have to see the other characters and who might cross over.

I want a Creed spinoff. Creed + Stanley = Comic Gold. Maybe we can see more of Dwight's awesome cousin. The possibilities are endless. If it is a Karen spinoff however I have no intrest in it whatsoever.

NBC said "The Office" spin-off will take audiences on "another comic journey, complete with new faces and new locations, but with the same unique sense of humor and brand of quality from Daniels and his creative team. It's the next chapter of what viewers have come to know and love about 'The Office.'
How is Unhitched doing? It could possibly be a Karen spinoff.

This is gonna ruin the show. I read in USA today that the spinoff is gonna pull characters from the main show. The loss of any secondary characters is gonna hurt the original.
Also, I doubt very much its a spinoff for Karen. All the talk had been that they were looking to bring in a "big star" to play the Michael Scott-type boss character.
I just don't see this spinoff being able to come up with original storylines. I mean how many Office-setting episodes can you come up with that are not being done on the original?
Ugh

I agree it changes the whole chemistry of the show by losing characters.
Look at Grey's Anatomy, they did the 'Addison' spinoff (don't know the name of it) but now more people watch that than then Grey's.
Dr. Gonzo

Doesn't change the fact that the Addison show is garbage. I just want to see more of Creed stealing ****. I would watch the show every day of the week.

I don't see a real need to do this spinoff, but with the huge success of The Office and the entire ensemble cast, they could afford to lose a few people if they replace them with equivalent characters. I think Andy might play out well with that group.

Why change a good thing? I am ok with a spinoff that doesn't steal from the original. Taking characters from Scranton will be a bad thing.

I think they could lose a few peripheral characters for the sake of continuity. Like maybe Roy gets a job up there and Samir the IT guy. They already have Karen. Andy doesn't fit in that well in Scranton, so they move him. Take those people, then you keep:
Michael, Dwight, Jim, Pam, Kevin, Crede, Stanley, the Vances, Kelli, Ryan, Jan, Angela, Oscar, Toby, and Meredith

Wait, have they actually said its gonna center on Karen's branch?
I really don't think its as simple as that . . . I bet its a new boss entirely.

The initial read was that the whole Branch Wars episode was testing for a spinoff involving Karen's branch. That was the rumor back a few months ago.

I would prefer it to do with Ryan, not Karen. Her character doesn't interest me at all. I would like to see secondary character's roles expanded a little, namely Creed.

I think the Ryan-Michael dynamic is awesome. The fact that Michael thought of him as his protogee, then he went and got the job as his boss is incredible. Their interactions are just hilarious.

If Ryan is the lead on this other Office spinoff, that might not be too bad. You can still have the occasional crossover with all the characters. It can work nicely if you think about it.

I just think this show is headed down a path to being bad. Next thing we know, they will just merge the two shows into one big Office show and it will take time away from the characters we love (Kevin, Stanley, Creed).
Ugh

I would prefer that they not do this if it involves taking away significant characters from The Office, but if it's a spinoff, it has to be that way.

Not necessarily the boss, but he could be one of the major characters.
When I first heard word of a spinoff a long while back, I heard they were trying to find a star (they offered to Jim Carrey) to be the boss. Ryan and/or Karen just don't seem to cut it.
bsaza2358

They need a huge central presence to make this show work. That would be Michael, Dwight, or Jim. Just doesn't make sense to take any of those 3 out of the mix.

The moment they got Jim and Pam together that began, the partial season before the strike wasn't that great.
Oh well, 30 Rock is coming back on the 10th and I am far more excited about that.
bsaza2358
04-03-2008, 02:44 PM
They have plenty of drama left in the Jim/Pam thing. They can add new temptation, have a "will he/won't he" kind of thing. They can move in together, they can get engaged, they can get married. There's plenty that they can get out of that thing.
There are couple big names I could see being the Boss of the spinoff. Stephen Colbert? Doubt it with his show and all, but imagine the possibilities! Paul Rudd? Seems to have a good relationship with Universal/NBC family and he's fricking hilarious. Xio mentioned Jim Carrey, which would be great but I think he's a bit to big.
bsaza2358

Jim Carrey needs to get his $20mm paychecks on movies. He's too big to do TV right now. Why ruin a good thing?

That might not be a bad one. He was awesome on Arrested Development. If they could get some of those guys back (like the guy who played Gob), that would be pretty sweet.

I would actually like to see the central, boss character to not be comparable to Michael. We don't need another crazy boss running the other branch.
It would be better to have the boss be a little more competant and have the surrounding characters be the crazy ones.
Dr. Gonzo

Bateman would be perfect as the boss. **** that would be awesome. Him playing the straight guy who really is just as ****** up as everyone else would be perfect. Wow, I can't think of anyone I would rather have in that role now.

I concur. Put me in the Jason Bateman corner. What is he up to?

I think Bateman has proven in his role as the straight man on Arrested Development that he can do that and be funny at the same time. Even if there is a little crossover, he and Michael can compete.
SugarSean
04-04-2008, 05:49 PM
**** that. The spinoff should be about the warehouse guys. Maybe put in a couple more comedians to work down there and I'd watch every week. Darryl and Lonnie wit the black dude from 40 Year Old Virgin and maybe Mike Epps or Charlie Murphy. Michael could make a couple appearances throughout the season and it'd be a hit.

And Jason Bateman should only be doin Arrested Development. Somebody needs to do something to get that show back on the air.

Arrested Development will never return as a TV show. I am the biggest AD fan on the planet but there is just no way it comes back. There will be a movie made and I can see a sequel or two if it is succesfull. Hurowitz has said he will never agree to do the show again and that kills its chances of coming back.
Jason Bateman is the best possible choice if there is an Office spinoff.

I am a waayy bigger AD fan than you. It's not even close. But I don't like the idea of Bateman playin a similar role to Michael Bluth b/c it'll just seem like a lame attempt to recreate AD. I'd rather see somebody much different be the boss of a new branch.

Tied for 1 is The Sopranos.
I have also made fans of the show. I have gotten 5 or so people to watch and they each own every season now. I did my damndest to get people watching it before it was cancelled.

It can't be a Ryan spinoff, you would lose the whole Michael/Ryan dynamic! plus Karen sucks. The only spinoff I would truly support would focus entirely on Creed.
and maybe...no. No, just Creed. why can't they just leave the office alone? Make twice as many of the regular show. Push the staff to the limit, I say!

Plus Creed, of course.

How often is Ryan on these days anyway?
They could always bring him back for an episode or two.
The biggest problem might be losing him as a writer on the original.

I'm sure BJ Novak would be fine to write for (and get money for) both shows. He isn't a critical part of The Office, but I think he is important. I think they need mostly a new cast of characters. You don't want to keep expectations there. You want it to have its own identity.

The only way I would support a spinoff is if they were somehow tied together...What I mean is characters from both shows still appeared on each one.
That or an Office based on the warehouse workers?
Last thing, is Ryan left the show, it would lose some humor.. He is one of the best writer's for the Office episodes

haha goes without saying. It's okay to be a little hypocritical in the off topic forum, IMO. practically expected.
I don't think the Warehouse workers would be funny at all. Didn't they just put Darryl into the regular cast this season? He's the only one who's really funny anyway, now that Roy is...
...
Can we get a Roy catch-up episode? I'd love to see him working a drive-thru or something.

Question: What do you know about the Office spin-off? — J.R.
Ausiello: I know that, contrary to speculation, it will not revolve around Dwight. According to an insider, the Michael-Dwight dynamic is "too integral to the show." The likelier scenario, according to a Peacock insider, has Ed Helms' Andy headlining Office 2.0. "That idea was batted around prior to the strike," whispers my source, "and NBC seemed interested." Personally, I hope NBC sticks with its original plan (http://community.tvguide.com/blog-entry/TVGuide-Editors-Blog/Ausiello-Report/Exclusive-Nbc-Plans/800025959) and looks outside the Dunderverse for the offshoot's boss.
