Pete Carroll has named Mark Sanchez the Trojans starting quarterback for the 2008 season, as he has beaten out Mitch Mustain and Aaron Corp for the job.

Any thoughts on this?

He has to shine and shine early because if he's not playing well and the team is struggling to win games or is losing then there are plenty of capable people behind him.

figured this would happen, he was a huge recruit and has experience not to mention time sitting and learning the offense. He didn't really get much of a chance to throw alot last year so it will be interesting to see what he can do.

I still think Mitch Mustaine was an idiot for transferring from Arkansas.

Carroll stated if there was a game this weekend, Sanchez would start...so theres still a competition for the QB position. So it's not entirely over for Mustain...

he's got litterally a canon for an arm. let's see if he can make it happen.

Is Chris Gallipo going to take Keith Rivers old spot? I couldn't find a USC thread, so I thought I would ask in here.

Mustain is a year behind Sanchez as far as class is concerned, yes?

I believe that Clay Mathews has that spot locked up.

Sanchez is a rJr and Mustain is a rSo (I think), so yes.

Not sure why he wouldn't transfer to a school that actually needs a QB, like hmm....idk Miami?

Has USC had there spring game yet? If it has anyone know how each player did?

Meh...I watched plenty of him in high school and this past year. His arm strength is adequate - not a cannon by any means.

There spring game is this Saturday. I'm excited because I am really wondering if Devon Kennard goes to USC's spring game or ASU's.

If he (Mitch Mustain) was at Arkansas right now, he would be a star with Bobby Petrino coaching him.

2002- Carson Palmer
2003- Matt Leinart
2004- Matt Leinart
2005- Matt Leinart
2006- John David Booty
2007- John David Booty
2008- Matt Sanchez (rJr)
2009- Matt Sanchez (rSr)
2010- Mitch Mustain (rSr)
2011- Matt Barkley (rSo)
2012- Matt Barkley (rJr)
2013- Matt Barkley (rSr)

Palmer was there from 1998 to 2002, but was only excellent in 2002. What an amazing streak of quarterbacks. It must be nice.

Because everyone learned to hate the words metaphor and similes back when they learned figurative language in middle school or there schools just ****ed up on them.

i love how everyone always uses literally instead of metaphorically

because... if you use the word metaphorically, it kind of makes it seem less special.

when you say "he's metaphorically got a cannon for an arm"

everyone would be like... uh... ok.

If USC's WR learn how to catch Sanchez will do awesome. Mustain transfering to USC was a mistake should have gone somewhere where he would start every year

great news. mark was great for us last year. he will be a stud. i felt some of the receivers worked better for him last year than they did for booty.

Right now is spring practice things could change come August. But Sanchez has been waiting and learning, he is going to end up the starter.

If Sanchez is smart he'll have a good year(easy for an SC QB) and then go to the NFL because Matt Barkely will start there from day one.

I think Galipo will play in the middle behind Rey and Cushing and Matthews on the outside, never a shortage of backers there is there?

will corp be a sophmore next year? I hope he transfers before he becomes the next Matt Cassel (which actually wouldnt be a bad deal) because I cant see him beating Mustain or Sanchez

Didn't Gallipo have major back surgery.

doubt barkley starts immediately but i do think he has the potential to be the best QB USC has ever had.

I could see Corp beating out Mustain and Sanchez if Sanchez has a bad season. Mustain should be the 3rd QB in the depth, IMO. Corp should be given an equal opportunity that Sanchez, Booty, and Leinart had. He was a top ranked QB in last years senior class and has all the tools your look for in an ideal QB. He's definitely the most athletic QB USC has had in some time. Has the size and frame. His arm strength and accuracy is more than adequate for a true sophomore. Barkley should have to wait just like Booty, Sanchez, and Corp.

I agree, he seems to have amazing mental and physical attributes with an amazing winning attitude(yet humble)...he is the complete package.

Clausen's HS competition was WEEAAAAAAK!!! If Oaks Christian would have played Servite HS or Canyon HS, they would have got that ass TAXED! Mater Dei's competition is the best in California.

This just sucks for Mustain, unless he kills it his senior year, he'll regret leaving Arkansas every day.

it does suck but it was a situation where it was either going to suck big time for sanchez or for mustain.

Can't really fault Mustain for transfering. Maybe you can fault him for going to USC, but he had no idea that Bobby Petrino would come to Arkansas.

I'll go out on a limb and say Mustain will be a first or second round pick in 2010 after one year of starting.

thats assuming usc will build their program around him for 1 year. when do you predict sanchez gets drafted (round)?

It's going to be interesting how Mustain and his ego take the fact that Sanchez is going to start. When he enrolled at Arkansas he assumed that he would be the man and with his former High School coach running the offense he would get to throw the ball around a ton and put up stats like he did in hs. Mustain didn't get his way, Nutt benched him, Mustain cried and transferred to USC. When it is all said and done I think by this time next year Mustain will be starting for some D2 school.

i dont know, it seems like he is quite settled at usc and already has a girlfriend. of course his career should be priority 1.

That is why it is called 'going out on a limb'.

Round two at the latest. He could have some stiff competition from some other impressive young guys (Stafford, Locker, Tebow, etc.), and he did not completely impress me last year. But he has the tools and he will most likely succeed as USC quarterbacks do, so the sky is the limit.

Not to mention he arguably will have one of the biggest arms if not the biggest in the draft next year if he declares in a relatively weak class.

I think you're right on Stafford having a better arm and i am a fan of his.

As for the going out on a limb comment....good point.
