The Broncos have gone for strength in numbers at the wide receiver position this offseason, and they added another player to the fold today.

Darrell Jackson has reached agreement on a one-year contract, contingent on passing his physical today.

The eight-year pro, who spent the bulk of his career with the Seattle Seahawks before a one-year stop with the San Francisco 49ers last year, is the third free-agent pass-catcher signed by Denver, following Keary Colbert and Samie Parker.

The move likely means Denver won’t expend a high draft pick at the position with such holdovers Brandon Marshall, Brandon Stokley, Glenn Martinez and others.

Jackson, 29, had three 1,000-yard seasons with Seattle but also had his share of injuries there. He was acquired by the Niners last spring for a fourth-round draft pick but, like the rest of San Francisco’s offense, never got in a consistent groove with quarterbacks Alex Smith and Trent Dilfer, who both eventually were injured. Jackson had 46 receptions for 497 yards and three touchdowns in ’07.

In his career, Jackson’s caught 487 passes for 6,942 yards and 50 touchdowns.

The article says 3, but we actually signed 4 WR, if you count Edell Shepherd. However it will be hard for Edell to make the team this year.

I agree, this could be a good signing as D-Jax is an experienced vet who will be playing for a new contract. Although he might not have the opportunities in Denver given that Marshall and Stokley are deservingly entrenched, and the team paid Keary Colbert a good deal of money so they obviously think he contribute a good deal. Add in Samie Parker as a quick little guy who Cutler can find in open space in a mulit-receiver set, and the Broncos have addressed the wide receiver position in the short-term.

If Rod Smith hasn't officially retired yet, he likely will soon. He had a great career, and it's not often a player gets to play his whole career with one franchise, especially one like the Denver Broncos and helping win the franchise's first Super Bowl championship (as well as the second).

And as you said in the Parker thread, CT, this essentially eliminates WR as a draft pick in all likelihood (at least for the first couple of rounds).

I was really starting to like Earl Bennett in the 2nd, doesn't look like it will happen now though.

he signed a 1 year deal for 1.5 according to schefter.

I like the move. Marshall, D-Jax, Stokley, Colbert, and Parker is a pretty good rotation and a hell of a lot better than what we had at the start of the off season. I still think we pick a WR though.

I agree. These are all "let's see what you got left" kinds of deals. Not a big loss / commitment if they don't pan out.

It should make for some interesting training camp competition...

DJax is done. He just drops too many passes.

link?

I can't remember where I read it, but from what I can recall your statement was not accurate. Sure he drops passes, all WR's do, but not at the rate that many think.

He does drop some passes, but he also has some playmaking ability.

The bigger knock against him has been injuries... it seems he's always nicked up (knee/ankle/foot). However, he was pretty healthy last year which is a good sign.

If he can stay healthy, I like this signing a lot more than Colbert or Parker.
