Cormega
Tragedy Khadafi
Masta Ace
Ill Bill

IMO Cormega is the best, though im not sure if he counts as underground, his first 2 cds, The Realness and The True Meaning are both in my rotation a lot, you can listen to both all the way through, i consider them both classics. The way he paints pictures with his words is just great. I think hes top 10 all time.

Check this video of his: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEC7FCyMIMo

Couple mega songs to listen to if you havent heard him:
Verbal Graffiti
Live Ya Life
They Forced My Hand
Fallen Soldiers
The Saga

Blackalicious - Soulfull and deep, Gift of Gab is one of the best lyricists ever and Chief Xcel is money as a producer. Must hear song: World of Vibrations

Heiroglyphics/Souls of Mischief - Solid production matched with the awesomeness that is Del and Pep Love. Must hear song: No Nuts

People Under the Stairs - Fantastic production and good rhyming with a suprisingly high number of very good tracks. Must hear song: The Breakdown

Jedi Mind Tricks - Absolutely spectacular production, good enough to overwrite the fact that Vinnie Paz is a blatant homophobe and not a great rapper. Must hear song: I against I

Zion I - Great lyrics and rythym over very interesting and unique production. Mind over Matter is a money album. Must hear song: One

Living Legends - Before "going dumb" blew up in the Bay Area, these guys were as hot as it got. Very good production and very distinct rapping style. Must hear song: Flawless

That about covers the groups I've really taken to in underground hip-hop.

I like Bun B, but we are appreciating artists who never got that kind of recognition, who rightfully deserved more than they got. Mainstream rap gets talked about enough, surprisingly few rap fans know anything about underground rap.

etk

Underground rap doesn't catch me because most of the time the beats are lame and boring. With mainstream rap you get dynamic producers and beats that serve different purposes. I agree that usually underground rappers are more talented and better lyricists, but the music just doesn't sound the same and I can't vibe to it. I'd take good production with bad rap over good rap with bad production any day of the week. That's why they don't get the recognition they deserve.

On average, that is correct, mainstream songs for the most part have better beats than underground songs. However my favorite beats are all from songs that aren't mainstream. Plenty of underground songs have great beats, you just have to know where to find them. Most of the songs of Army of the Pharoahs I have listened to have great beats, and plus it depends on what kind of beat you like. If it's jazzy beats then underground has mainstream beat easily. People under the Stairs, Dilated Peoples, Cunninlynguists, all have good beats.

Then there are songs in the gray area between mainstream and underground, like Jurassic 5 and the Roots. Most people know these groups but don't know many songs by them except for their most famous ones, What's Golden, and the Seed 2.0. My favorite beats are J5 and the Roots beats. Mainstreams got the quantity, but not the quality.

The good production is the underground with detailed beats and samples. The mainstream is repetitive bullshiat made of fruity loops with bass added to it.

Don't agree in the least.

The best producers are almost all underground, or at least not producing the mainstream stuff these days. Who does the mainstream have? Dr. Dre and Kayne (seriously, inform me, I have no idea)?

Finding good underground can be difficult, but the good stuff is infinitely better than the crap that's going platinum these days.
