You don't really need to comment (though you can), I just want this on record in case I stumble upon a decent mock.
FINAL 2008 MOCK DRAFT
1. Miami Dolphins – Jake Long OT Michigan
Not much to say here. I would have gone with Chris Long, but you can’t really slam Parcells for wanting a franchise tackle, which Jake Long should be.
2. St. Louis Rams – Chris Long DE Virginia
I want to have Atlanta deal up here, but the recent talk that they like Matt Ryan has turned me off of the idea. Still definitely something to watch for if the Ryan rumors prove false. Between Long and Dorsey here, I’m just going to guess that logic wins out – Dorsey plays Carriker’s natural position – under tackle. Long is exactly what they need.
3. Atlanta Falcons – Glenn Dorsey DT Louisiana State
This could be Matt Ryan, but every indication up until Schefter’s report was that Dorsey topped Atlanta’s draft board. While I think they would stay put and take Ryan if Dorsey were gone, I just can’t buy a team run by Dimitrov and Smith passing on the big, disruptive DT.
4. Oakland Raiders – Darren McFadden RB Arkansas
I’m lead to believe that Al wants McFadden, against the wishes of everyone else in Oakland. I think Vernon Gholston is more of an Al guy as well, and probably a backup plan in the event that Long/McFadden goes 2-3. I think the staff would prefer a trade down or Sedrick Ellis.
5. New England Patriots (f/KC) – Vernon Gholston DE/OLB Ohio State
TRADE: Kansas City trades #5 to New England for #7 and #69.
I had New Orleans trading up to #5 at first, but after seeing Scott’s mock, I’m going to trust that Kansas City wants Harvey, and thus, won’t stray too far from #5. I had Gholston falling to New England anyway, but it’s no guarentee he makes it past NYJ.
6. Carolina Panthers (f/NYJ) – Matt Ryan QB Boston College
TRADE: New York trades #6 to Carolina for #13, #67, and #74.
The make or break pick for my mock, but I’ve just got a feeling here. Hurney’s praise for Ryan struck me as sincere, and with the David Carr disaster fresh in everyone’s memory, he can play this into not only an attempt to land the QB of the future, but also a more reliable backup plan in case Delhomme goes down. Carolina has the picks to make a trade work, and I think New York can be swayed, even with Gholston still on the board (though after the edit...he’s not).
7. Kansas City Chiefs (f/NE) – Derrick Harvey DE Florida
I wanted to move KC down to #10 where they made the surprise pick of Chris Williams, but Scott confirmed my original belief that Kansas City wants Harvey. Still a bit surprising, I suppose.
8. New Orleans (f/Bal) – Sedrick Ellis DT Southern California
TRADE: Baltimore trades #8 and #106 to New Orleans for #10 and #78.
I had Detroit making a move up for Derrick Harvey, but with Harvey now gone to KC, it’s New Orleans making the move to #8, after desperate attempts to trade for #5-7. Ellis is a fine consolation DT.
9. Cincinnati Bengals – Rashard Mendenhall RB Illinois
With Sedrick Ellis and Derrick Harvey off the board, Mendenhall would appear to be the obvious pick. Keith Rivers is a thought as well.
10. Philadelphia Eagles (f/Bal) – Brandon Albert OT/OG Virginia
TRADE: Baltimore trades #10 overall to Philadelphia for #19 overall and #49 overall.
There are conflicting reports on which lineman Philly is said to like, and while Jeff Otah is very believable, I’m going with Albert – they have a year to develop him as William Thomas’ replacement, and in the mean time, he can push Todd Herremans at left guard. They’ll get some picks back by trading Lito Sheppard to Tampa Bay.
11. Buffalo Bills – Devin Thomas WR Michigan State
It’s way too risky for Buffalo to move down now that Chicago appears to have legitimate interest in Thomas. They stay at #11 and get their man.
12. Denver Broncos – Jerod Mayo MLB Tennessee
I’m a little lost here...Clady and Williams make sense, but I’ll believe a first round tackle to Denver when I see it. Jonathan Stewart was a thought as well. I’m going with Mayo, whose value seems to match, though it’s a complete guess.
13. New York Jets (f/Car) – Jonathan Stewart RB Oregon
As bad as New York was, they don’t have many pressing needs after free agency. With some added third rounders, they can afford somewhat of a luxury here. There are rumors that New York likes Stewart a lot, and he may be the target in a trade down.
14. Chicago Bears – Ryan Clady OT Boise State
This would be tough if Clady weren’t here...maybe a trade with a DRC hungry Dallas. However, that’s not a worry, as Clady seems to fit perfectly in Chicago.
15. Detroit Lions – Keith Rivers LB Southern California
I originally penciled Detroit into the #10 spot for fear of this exact scenario – no Harvey, no Mayo, no RB. My best guess here is a Millen-esque value pick, and a great cover 2 fit.
16. Arizona Cardinals – Leodis McKelvin CB Troy
Seems like an easy pick – McKelvin has everything Arizona is looking for in a corner, and neither RB is available.
17. Kansas City Chiefs (f/Min) – Chris Williams OT Vanderbilt
I don’t have any real reason to believe that Williams will be a Chief other than Gosselin’s recent mock, where he had Williams going #5. It’s so absurd there has to be SOME truth to it.
18. Dallas Cowboys (f/Hou) – Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie CB Tennessee State
TRADE: Houston trades #18 to Dallas for #22 and #91.
Houston loses out on its man, so it decides to trade back. Dallas loves DRC, and at the price of a third, jumps Baltimore.
19. Baltimore Ravens (f/Phi) – Mike Jenkins CB South Florida
I was AWFULLY tempted to stick Chad Henne in this spot, but armed with all sorts of picks, Baltimore can afford to wait a while before moving back up. Jenkins is a superb talent and a steal for a CB needy team. Passing on McKelvin will be questioned, but the extra picks should help Baltimore nail its needs.
20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – DeSean Jackson WR California
His stock has been falling, and rightfully so, but with Lito Sheppard on his way to Tampa (at least in my mock), Tampa Bay can pass on CB and go with its other pressing need. At the very least, he’s the best returner this draft has to offer.
21. Washington Redskins – Phillip Merling DE Clemson
Strong reports linking Merling to Washington, and there couldn’t be a better system fit.
22. Houston Texans (f/Dal) – Duane Brown OT Virginia Tech
After losing out on Williams, Houston tries to satisfy its LT lust with a major reach. Brown is raw, but he’s got the athleticism that Kubiak loves, and with no second rounder, he can’t afford to lose him.
23. Pittsburgh Steelers – Gosder Cherilus OT Boston Collge
Max Starks was tagged, but he could end up at left tackle. Cherilus has the attitude that Mike Tomlin will love (which is why I balk on Kentwan Balmer and Quentin Groves), and can play right tackle immediately.
24. Kansas City (f/Ten) – Jeff Otah OT Pittsburgh
TRADE: Tennessee trades #24 to Kansas City for #35 and #82.
With Otah falling, Kansas City takes advantage of its wealth in picks and grabs a bookend for its first pick, Chris Williams. I can’t get a read on Otah’s value – he could easily go #10 in this mock.
25. Baltimore Ravens (f/Sea) – Chad Henne QB Michigan
TRADE: Seattle trades #25 to Baltimore for #38, #78, and a 2009 second.
Henne appears to be the second QB of choice, and Seattle figures to be a popular spot for teams looking to get back into the first round. I see a desperate Baltimore winning the bidding war, with Chicago, Miami, and Atlanta also getting into the mix.
26. Jacksonville Jaguars – Kentwan Balmer DT North Carolina
Quentin Groves makes sense, but Jason Taylor is a possibility on day 2. I’ll go Balmer as a replacement for Stroud.
27. Atlanta Falcons (f/SD) – Brian Brohm QB Lousiville
TRADE: San Diego trades #27 to Atlanta for #34 and #68
Yet another team jumping back into the first, though this has been a good possibility for a couple months. Atlanta needs a QB, and word is they prefer Brohm.
28. Miami Dolphins (f/Dal) – Quentin Groves OLB Auburn
TRADE: Dallas trades #28 to Miami for #32 and a 2009 third.
Dallas and Miami deal for a third time this offseason, this time so Parcells can grab the pass rushing OLB he covets.
29. San Francisco 49ers – Curtis Lofton ILB Oklahoma
Mike Nolan hasn’t been very good at covering up his guy...and he’s said to love Curtis Lofton. I’m inclined to believe it.
30. Green Bay Packers – Brandon Flowers CB Virginia Tech
Some mild character concerns, but he brings the physicality and aggressiveness that the Packers love in their corners.
31. New York Giants – Kenny Phillips S Miami
It’s a toss up between Johnson and Kenny Phillips – Johnson has the momentum, but Phillips’ skillset fits better.
Second Round
32. Dallas Cowboys (f/Mia) – Felix Jones RB Arkansas
I originally had Tyrell Johnson, but I’m changing it to Felix. Dallas already addressed DB, and can possibly move DRC or Henry to safety.
33. St. Louis Rams – Aqib Talib CB Kansas
I looked trade down, but the Rams would love the value.
34. San Diego Chargers (f/Atl) – Tyrell Johnson S Arkansas
Can play alongside Eric Weddle.
35. Tennessee Titans – James Hardy WR Indiana
I want to give Tennessee a speed receiver, but Hardy has the value.
36. New York Jets – Antoine Cason CB Arizona
Value pick, similar player to Darrelle Revis.
37. Atlanta Falcons – Dann Connor LB Penn State
Best value, can compete to play the middle.
38. Seattle Seahawks (f/Bal) – Dustin Keller TE Purdue
They land their first round target and gain picks.
39. Miami Dolphins (f/SF) – Joe Flacco QB Delaware
With Chicago interested in Flacco, Miami jumps up.
40. New York Giants (f/NO) – Tracy Porter CB Indiana
The Shockey trade eventually gets done, and New York grabs a perfect corner for its system, very similar to Aaron Ross.
41. Buffalo Bills – Martellus Bennett TE Texas A&M
I’m a little lost here – the value is at WR. I don’t like Lo-Jack’s fit. Maybe a receiving TE.
42. Denver Broncos –Limas Sweed WR Texas
They’ve signed a few WR this offseason, but I don’t think they can pass on sweed’s value.
43. Tennessee Titans (f/Car) – Chris Johnson RB East Carolina
They’re said to love the guy. If he makes it this far, they could jump up.
44. Chicago Bears – Jamaal Charles RB Texas
I get the feeling this could be Matt Forte, but hopefully my Bears go for the value.
45. Detroit Lions – Trevor Laws DT Notre Dame
Doesn’t fill a big need, but can rotate at UT. Marinelli will love him.
46. Cincinnati Bengals – Malcolm Kelly WR Oklahoma
I hate going offense twice in a row, but Cincinnati could use the leverage with Chad.
47. Minnesota Vikings – Fred Davis TE Southern California
Minnesota can’t be happy with Visanthe Shiancoe at TE, can they?
48. Atlanta Falcons – Tyvon Branch CB Connecticut
OT is a need, but I don’t see any that Atlanta would deem worthy. Branch is a reach, but with his physical tools, someone’s going to take him early.
49. Baltimore Ravens (f/Phi) – Calais Campbell DE Miami
Not entirely sure here, so I’ll go with the value. Maybe a future replacement for Trevor Pryce.
50. Arizona Cardinals – John Carlson TE Notre Dame
Just a hunch – Whisesnhunt has voiced his displeasure with his TE play, specifically blocking, so maybe he’ll surprise and take the multi-dimensional Carlson.
51. Washington Redskins – Jordy Nelson WR Kansas Sate
Another guy they’ve been linked to.
52. Philadelphia Eagles (f/TB) – DaJuan Morgan S NC State
Acquired for Lito Sheppard. Can eventually replace Dawkins.
53. Pittsburgh Steelers – Cliff Avril OLB Purdue
More 3-4 talent with all the big receivers off the board.
54. Carolina Panthers (f/Ten) – Sam Baker OT/OG Southern California
Terrific value and a very good ZBS fit. Could play RT or guard immediately.
55. Seattle Seahawks – Donnie Avery WR Houston
Value is too great to pass on.
56. Green Bay Packers – Oniel Cousins OT/OG Texas El Paso
Would have liked to see Baker fall, but Cousins has higher upside.
57. San Francisco 49ers (f/Mia) – Anthony Collins OT Kansas
Another athletic tackle to play opposite Joe Staley
58. Jacksonville Jaguars – Lawrence Jackson DE Southern California
Even if they do add Jason Taylor, they can’t pass on this value.
59. Indianapolis Colts – Andre Caldwell WR Florida
WR talent to groom behind Harrison.
60. Green Bay Packers – Jeremy Thompson DE Wake Forest
An edge rushing talent to eventually fill KGB’s role.
61. Dallas Cowboys – Mario Manningham WR Michigan
He’s off a ton of draft boards, but I can see Dallas being intrigued, with no more picks unitl #100.
62. New England Patriots – Justin King CB Penn State
Intriguing upside, can be brought along slowly.
63. New York Giants – Jason Jones DE Eastern Michigan
Can fill Justin Tuck’s role once Tuck takes Strahan’s.
FINAL 2008 MOCK DRAFT
1. Miami Dolphins – Jake Long OT Michigan
Not much to say here. I would have gone with Chris Long, but you can’t really slam Parcells for wanting a franchise tackle, which Jake Long should be.
2. St. Louis Rams – Chris Long DE Virginia
