I want Caleb Campbell as a UDFA or 6th round pick. Kid can absolutely hit. I think the first pick will suprise us all. I am interested in to see what we will actually do.

I really want Balmer or cherilus in the first. Either can start very early and both will be huge additions. Cherilus would be great to have at rt and colon can play inside where he's better suited. Balmer would give us a better starter and a great run stopping end. With him and smith our run defense would be alot better off. Keisel just isnt getting it done.

Good, we're not getting Stewart

BIG7BEN
04-26-2008, 04:25 PM
why would you not have wanted Stewart??? lol

What do you guys think...do you think we may draft mendenhall if he is still there???...he is called a "strong and powerful" runner, and they say he runs better between the tackles. there aren't any more OTs worth drafting in the 1st imo, and other than Mendenhall...I see only Balmer, Sweed, or possibly trade down then pick either another WR.

thoughts???

Nothing against Stewart but we have 6 picks and RB is not a need. I really hope we take Jenkins here, or trade down.

Biggest steal of the draft baby!!! I am like crying.

steelernation77
04-26-2008, 05:10 PM
He was too good of a value to pass up. If one thing has frustrated me about Willie more than anything it's that if there isn't a big hole, he has a hard time getting positive yardage, and also that his vision isn't great. Mendenhall is a tough runner with good vision. He has good hands. By all accounts he is a very good character guy who will work hard. I like him.

Stiller would have hated the pick if it was Vernon Gholston! :D

Hines
04-26-2008, 05:29 PM
I love this pick. I dont think anyone will be able to hold us now. Add in a WR, and oh man our offense will be unstopable.

ryanrayne
04-26-2008, 05:42 PM
Will Mendy be "that GUY" to get those tough yards and wear down the opposing defenses to grind out a win? We don't have "that GUY" on the roster before.

Think there is a possibility of Dan Connor sliding back to us in R3? That would be a hell of a steal IMO

mikehop05
04-26-2008, 08:13 PM
Wow.

I don't know what to make of this... I am excited with the possibilites we now have on offense... but at the same time I am concerned with our defensive line situation.

Damn Jacksonville, they just had to get Groves, they now have 4 decent ends, and they got Harvey earlier, wtf... I think we would have definietly gotten groves if he was there.

So what does this all mean?

Dookie is getting cut.
Gary Russell will be the 4th RB.
Washington will be our 4th WR.
Hines won't be resigned after his contract is up... nor will Willie.

Round 3:
Kendall Langford?
Dre Moore?
Justin King?
Charles Godfrey?
Anthony Collins?

****'s crazy.

Jakey
04-26-2008, 08:23 PM
Man im stoked! We had the No1 defence last year, which should only get better with Woodley and Timmons...and now the offence is gonna be off the scales!!! Ben, Willie, Mendenhall, Holmes, Ward and Sweed! OMG, that is like a dream!!! :)

Hines
04-26-2008, 08:34 PM
I think Hines will move to the slot and Mendy will always share carries with Willie. Dookie gets cut. Moore is strictly return player who can provide good hands. Russell gets decent carries. Reid gets cut.

as long as we get a DL and CB early tomorrow, it will feel like a great draft!
who would've thought, RB and WR the 1st two picks?

seems like we'll have a good crop of DL and CB's to chose from.
King, Ikegwuounu, Scandrick?
Moore, Bryant, Langford?

a lot of people have slipped; with four more picks this could be good for us?
i do feel bad for Russell.

Sweed is big but he is not physical. He is going to have to beat the jam. Hope fully he doesn't have Dwayne Jarrett syndrome

Jakey
04-26-2008, 09:12 PM
He doesnt need to be physical! Holmes aint physical but he does well! Sweed is a great possetion reciever IMO...he runs good routes, and has great hands. Plus he is 6'4"...dont get much better IMO.

Jakey
04-26-2008, 09:23 PM
We basically just screwed the whole league! Mendenhall will be a beast...and Sweed is the perfect compliment to Holmes for the near future! I can see us going BPA through the whole draft, barring QB and RB now.

04-26-2008, 09:27 PM
we got the OVERALL #15 &#23 according to Scott....WOW.....also according to Scott we got the 3rd best running back(but IMO i think Mendenhall is alot better then Stewart and i like him better then McFadden also because he is a more powerful back) and then we got the 2nd best WR in Sweed..... another WOW...good draft so far, but we always have a good to great draft.

2008 NFL DRAFT LIVE BLOG -- April 26, 2008
Serendipitous Steelers

9 p.m. -- The Steelers had a very good first day. Perhaps fortuitous first day is more like it. I'm sure they wanted to add depth to the offensive and defensive lines on day one, but I just don't see how they could pass up talent like RB Rashard Mendenhall and WR Limas Sweed. Both positions are ones of need, but maybe not as much as defensive line and outside linebacker. But they handled this one right. You take guys who can be weapons for you if they drop in your lap. If Kevin Colbert and Mike Tomlin had a playbook that said you draft this position regardless of who's available, they certainly threw it away when it came time to pick. Taking arguably the No. 2 overall RB and one of the top 3 or 4 WRs trumps taking an offensive or defensive lineman who might be seventh or eighth at their position. There's time on Sunday to pick up those guys.

It makes rounds 3 and 4 critical, as they always are, for the Steelers. If they are going to replace some age on the defensive line, they will have to address it early on Sunday. If there is some depth at OG or OT, then it's going to have to be addressed early on, too. Though the thought here is they are more set on the O-line than the D-line. We'll see.

A couple guys who fell in the draft have local connections. PSU CB and Gateway High's Justin King is still on the board as we enter Sunday's action. And Dan Connor, the Lions all-everything LB is still left. Doesn't mean they can't have very successful NFL careers, but they are obviously going to have to prove themselves a bit more when they get into training camps. King's stock may be dropping fast. Three of the last four players picked Saturday were CBs.

I want Antwaun Molden or Dre Moore in the third. I also think Scandrick will be there in the third which IMO will be a great pick. Wheeler in the fourth will be good. Dunlap in the fifth and whatever else in the 6th. I hope a trade happens though so we can get a 7th.

I still want to pick up Carl Stewart in the 6th. I'm thinking something like this:

3.88 Dre Moore or Kendall Langford DE
4.123 Oniel Cousins OG/OT
5.156 Best CB available. Preferably Ike, assuming Scandrick, Molden and co are gone
6.188 Carl Stewart FB

Wow this is a good draft so far. Even though RB wasn't our biggest need its hard to pass on a guy like Mendenhall when hes there at 23. Limas Sweed falling to us in the second is the best thing i could have asked for. There was a lot of talk about him being a 1st rounder and he falls to us in the second. Thats awesome!

Hopefully in round three we can pick up maybe Justin King, Orlando Scandrick or another DB or maybe even if Connor falls to us we could take him. He would be the biggest steal in the draft if he did. Hopefully we will pick up a quality O and D lineman in rounds 3-7.

brat316
04-27-2008, 12:45 AM
I think Sweed was a fringe 1st rounder, like Dwayne Jarrett last year. Hopefully he doesn't get Dwayne Jarrett disease. Though it helped fill our need for tall WR.

Mandenhall that was great, I thought he was a top 15 pick and that he wouldn't slide down as far as he did. I thought Stewart would, but since he went ahead of Mendy. Mendy fell, same thing I think would have happen if Mendy went Stewart would have fell.

I really hope we get either Godfrey or King today. King has fallen pretty far and would be an excellent pick for us. I know you guys dont like him too much but I think King has more talent than any other corner in the draft and just needs to be coached. Tomlin can work his magic and make King a really good player.

Godfrey has a lot of talent and good size, but whenever i watched Iowa play, he wasn't really a guy that stood out to me. I dont know if he was injured or not, but he never really jumped out at me as that great of a player. I wouldn't mind getting him because he does have potential with those good of measurables and with Tomlin being as good of a DB coach as he is, he could be a good player for us.

I dont know if either will be there for us at 88 though. But there are guys like Scandrick, Molden, Branch that will be there in the third and the fourth so we can get some really talented corners in this draft.

Hines

Yeah i agree. It's a pretty good pick.

I'm starting to think that that's what's going to happen, but i dont know if Bruce Davis is gonna be an every down player. We all know that he is going to be a good passrusher, that's pretty much a given, but i dont know how good he is against the run. I think that's one of his question marks. Congrats on the Dixon pick! You got a great value, had he stayed healthy and went to the national championship game, he could have been a first round pick. You've got a QB with great leadership, as shown when he played in the Arizona game after being injured in the ASU game. You've got a QB who can be a pocket passer as evidenced by the Arizona game, aside from the one 40-yard TD run, the whole game he was in the pocket.

A little omething I found...Dixon

The rented sedan was rolling toward the Eugene Airport at a quarter to noon
Sunday when the driver got the news he’d been waiting for, fielding a phone call
from the house he’d just left after a long, anxious morning. So Dennis Dixon
Sr. did what he figured any proud, elated father whose son had just been drafted
would do: He whipped a U-turn on the Beltline Highway, put the pedal to the
metal and rushed back to give his boy a prolonged, heartfelt hug.
“Oh, damn, I’m a Pittsburgh Steeler!” Dixon’s jubilant son, Dennis, exclaimed
shortly after his father’s return. “It’s a rush, and now I’ve got to go out
there and do what I do.”
“The door is opened!” Dixon Sr. yelled. “I’ve got goosebumps right now.”

Leave it to the Dixon family to provide a little added drama to the NFL draft
process, one which had been filled with uncertainty since an untimely injury
rocked their world six months ago.
When the Steelers used a fifth-round draft pick to select Dixon, the former
Oregon quarterback whose Heisman Trophy and national championship dreams had
been derailed by a torn knee ligament in November, it ended a tense session in
front of the living-room television that was well into its fifth hour. But in
terms of facilitating a family celebration, the moment occurred at the nick of
time.
Hoping to go as high as the third round, which began at 7 a.m. Pacific time,
Dixon had grown increasingly frustrated as the day dragged on, becoming visibly
angry when three teams he felt might pick him (the Carolina Panthers, Kansas
City Chiefs and Chicago Bears) chose other players early in the fifth round.
Shortly thereafter, at 11:30 a.m., Dixon Sr. and daughter Danitra gave up and
headed for the airport to catch their respective flights to California.
Quiet and aggravated, Dixon said goodbye to his father and sister and started
shooting pool with former Ducks receiver Brian Paysinger, one of the many
ex-teammates who spent much of the weekend at the house near the Oregon campus
devouring the meaty offerings cooked up by Dixon Sr.
He was leaning over the table and lining up a shot when his iPhone finally
buzzed. Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin, whom Dixon had gotten to know on a
pre-draft visit to the Steelers’ facility, was on the other line.
“Are you ready to be a Steeler?” Tomlin asked.
“Yessir!” Dixon said, pumping his right fist while excitedly bounding up and
down the stairs.
Dixon’s house was full of sleepy friends, some of whom were awakened by the
commotion. But the two most important people of all weren’t there to share his
joy. Dixon, who lost his mother, Jueretta, to breast cancer four years ago, is
exceptionally close to his father and sister. They had to share this moment, and
now Tomlin and the Steelers had made it all possible.
Ten long minutes later, Dennis Sr. and Danitra returned. Even as they
celebrated together, the idea of Dixon wearing the black-and-gold was all so
surreal.
Dixon Sr. lives in San Leandro, a working-class town in the shadow of
Oakland’s McAfee Coliseum, and is a longtime fan of the Oakland Raiders. “Jack
Tatum’s kids used to go to school with Dennis and Danitra,” he recalled
Saturday. “We used to go over to his house all the time. There’s talk of Dennis
going to San Francisco, and everyone says, ‘If he does, you’ll have to root for
the 49ers.’ And I tell ‘em, ‘No, I don’t.’ ”
He was kidding. We think.
On Sunday, when reminded of the longtime Raiders-Steelers rivalry that
includes the Immaculate Reception, the elder Dixon said, “You know how hard
that’s gonna be, to root for the Steelers? Matter of fact, that’s harder than
the 49ers. But I’ll manage.”
In the wake of his injury, Dixon had maintained that he didn’t care where he
went, that all he wanted was an opportunity to make an NFL roster. So he wasn’t
about to complain about being drafted by a team that just gave a reported
eight-year, $102 million contract to Ben Roethlisberger, its young, franchise
quarterback.
“As a quarterback in my situation, coming off an injury, it’s going to take a
while for me to adapt anyway,” Dixon said. “Being able to learn from two smart,
experienced quarterbacks like Ben Roethlisberger and Charlie Batch goes a long
way. I’m just going to be a sponge and absorb everything.
“At the same time, I’m a competitor, and I’m going to go out there and compete
with everything I’ve got.”
Dixon added that he was excited by the opportunity to play with veteran
Steelers wideout Hines Ward, whom he said he was “honored to have a chance to
meet” during his visit.
“As a little kid, this is what you dream of, right here,” he said. “Now,
you’ve got to respond. I can’t wait to get out there and get to work.”
If he’s in a hurry, it’s nothing compared to the hurry his father and sister
were in as they left the house for a second time Sunday.
“Tell ‘em to hold the plane!” Dixon joked to his father. “Tell ‘em your son
just got drafted, and that’s why you were late.”
“We’ve got to go!” Danitra said, and seconds later they were in the car, ready
to hoof it up the Beltline Highway once more. But as he pulled away, Dixon Sr.
had one final thought.
“Remember Slash?” he asked, referring to former Steelers quarterback and
multipurpose threat Kordell Stewart. “Maybe we’ve got Slash II.”

you had him on your list before the draft!
sounds like a keeper too!

now what DL and CBs are we gonna get?

To answer your question, Mwelde Moore will start out as our returner unless we find somebody else. As for the recievers being cut, I think we keep 5 and place two on PS. I see our recievers as this:

Hines
Holmes
Sweed
Nate
Bryant/Reid

I have Reid or Bryant as the last one because either one will stay as returning possiblities.

If Rucker is raw and needs work, I can see him as one of our PS guys. I think Baker needs more time to develop strength so we put him on the PS again.

i don't think Reid will be a Steeler for much longer?
especially if Moore is gonna get some time at KR!
i'm tired of Reid not even dressing for games...time to let him go.

So what does everyone realistically grade our draft? I'm thinking A-/B+. I would have liked to have seen an OG picked up at some point, maybe 5 or 6, but otherwise we got really good value for our picks.

I know on yahoo they gave us an A, and most on ESPN seem to like it.

How soon can you play or practice?

Well as far as my doctors have told me, they are going to try to release me within a month. That is good for me because that means that I am truly ahead of schedule. I am happy for that.

I would rather have him on IR. That way he can learn the playbook, watch film workout and stuff. And not have to worry about being cut.

So Frenchy gets cut, and Zib, Batch, and Ben are teh qbs

Nope..

If they were at all impressed with Zabransky in pre-draft training sessions.. they wouldn't have drafted Dennis Dixon.

Hines Ward doesnt have an ACL.

yeah i think missing an ACL just slows you down. Hines isn't all that fast and neither is Henderson. So it's not impossible to play without one.

Hines Ward doesnt have an ACL.

That explains why he's the worst post-TD celebratory dancer to ever play the game.

I remember staring at the tv thinking 'What the hell is this guy doing?'

Hahaha yeah that one was pretty bad. He's had some good ones though. Like the classic Ickey Shuffle and the one where he made fun of TO, when he was with the eagles, when he flapped his arms up and down. haha Gotta love Hines! :)

That is a freakin sweet video of this kid!!!
i was so worried that we didn't address the DL in the draft and was hoping we'd sign some bad ass D-linemen?
it says he was an end, but it looks in the video as if he's a tackle?
and at 266lbs do you think we'll keep him on the line or have him switch to OLB?

i'm finding listings of Kyle Clement weighing 316lbs, and others sayin he's 266?
some sayin he's a DT and some sayin he's a DE?
WTF?

i'm hoping he's a 316lb DT?

are you questioning whether you are hoping he is a 316 lb DT??

i am for sure hoping he is a 316 lb DT. how tall are we talking about?? might slim down a bit and make a nice DE.

The steelers.com roster has Clement listed at 6'4" 290, sounds like a perfect fit at DE to me. And the video of him floating around shows that he was absolutely DOMINATE, albeit at DII level. He's up there with Legursky, Bryant, Rucker, and Bailey as the UDFA's that have me the most intrigued.

I had to do a free writing thing for class so I graded the steeler draft.

Keep in mind I am usually negative about these type of things.

Well have at it.

Pittsburgh Steelers 2008 Draft Review

1.Rashard Mendenhall 5’10 225 4.45 RB Illinois-A tremendous value pick at the number 23 spot in the first round, Rashard is an instant upgrade at the position over incumbent back up Najeh Davenport. Mendenhall has a rare combination of size, speed and lateral quickness. He makes one cut plants his foot and hits the hole hard. Its hard to evaluate him because he played in a spread offense with slowly developing lateral runs that is not used in the NFL. Only had one year of production at the college level, “a one year wonder.”

Pro Comparison-Larry Johnson

Player Grade B+

2.Limas Sweed 6’4 215 4.52 WR Texas-Just what Big Ben ordered, a tall playmaker to add to the Steelers already impressive arsenal. Sweed has excellent hands and adequate speed, but is not as physical as you would expect for a wide receiver of his stature. Also Sweed may struggle to get off press man coverage due to this lack of physicality and due to his only adequate speed and large frame he may struggle to separate from pro corners. Despite his flaws Sweed is exactly what the Pittsburgh offense needed in a WR and is a tremendous value where he was picked.

Pro Comparison-Reggie Williams with better hands

Player Grade B+

3.Bruce Davis 6’2 252 4.78 OLB UCLA-A very productive college player that will help to upgrade the Steelers inconsistent pass rush. May have been a reach at where he was drafted but should be a solid player that should allow the Steelers to move Lawrence Timmons to inside linebacker in the not too distant future.

Player Grade C+

4.Tony Hills 6’5 309 5.25 OT Texas-Hills fell down in the draft due to an injury and the Steelers may have picked up a steal. Hills will help bolster offensive line depth the team’s most glaring need.

Player Grade C+

5.Dennis Dixon 6’3 195 4.5 QB Oregon-Was a very unwise luxury pick for the Steelers. Dixon was a Heisman trophy candidate until he tore the ACL in his knee. If the Steelers are going to use Dixon at multiple positions this pick doesn’t look quite as bad but if he is only going to play QB this was a self indulgent waste of a pick. The teams has much more pressing needs than a third string QB.

Pro Comparison-A very poor man’s Vince Young

Player Grade-D+

6.Mike Humpal 6’2 244 4.82 ILB Iowa-A slow plodding thumper of a linebacker that I figured would go undrafted is a waste of a pick for the Steelers. The team should have gone defensive lineman with its last two picks, instead the team is stuck with a player that can only make contributions on special teams and will in all likely hood be cut in training camp.

Pro Comparison-A destitute man’s James Farrior

Player Grade F

7.Ryan Mundy 6’0 205 4.53 S West Virginia-Different position but I have much the same opinion of Mundy as I do Humpal. He could contribute on special teams but will likely be cut in training camp.
Player Grade F

Pittsburgh Steelers Overall Grade 2008 Draft-C+
Due to the fact that the Steelers failed to make any attempt to sure up the defensive line and barely did anything to improve their offensive line I can’t give this class any higher of a grade than a C+. Football games are won and lost in the trenches and the Steelers need to get back to this old adage and brand of physical football.

So this has nothing to do with the draft and I didn't really know where to put it, it's really just bragging. So SG5 (read Steelersgirl5) is my roommate and best friend. Well at the place she works, one of her old coworkers used to be Major Greene (read Joe Greene's son), and yesterday Major came into where she works just to visit and what not and in with him walks the one, the only, Mean Joe. Well her being my best friend, she fruckin' got him to sign an autograph to me. Yes, its true. I have an autograph to me from Mean Joe Greene.
