Let's get started with ROY picks. Way to early but why not. Harvey takes DROY with double digit sacks on a playoff team and James Hardy takes OROY with double digit TDs in buffalo, he is their only redzone receiving threat.

BrownsTown
04-28-2008, 06:02 PM
OROY will be McFadden. Only Ryan will get more opportunities to prove himself, and he has so little talent around him it's ridiculous. Glenn Dorsey will be the DROY, he's a high motor player, maybe the best player in the draft, put into a situation with ample playing time and a good defense around him.

I love DMC but I think that his team will be down a lot and so I think his stats will be hurt by that, whereas I think Hardy will post up monsterous TD totals as Buffalo's best redzone threat.

I'll go with Gholston for DROY, he should be able to get some sacks.

For OROY I'll go with a surprise pick and say Kevin Smith, he landed in the best situation for an RB, all the other top backs will be in commitees.

To avoid being a homer I'll go with...

OROY - McFadden (I know, going out on a limb)
DROY - Gholston

Let me say this much. Keith Rivers will start from day 1, likely at MLB and we all know the love LB's get in these deals. I think Gholston will be a stud.

BaLLiN
04-28-2008, 06:20 PM
DROY- Curtis Lofton/Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie

Reasoning: Lofton really is a heat seeking missel, he could be replacing DeMorio Williams or taking MLB from Brooking, either way he is going to see alot of tackles. DRC is a bold pick because he is still raw and may not get a chance early, but in a weak conference of WRs he will come up big.

I'll go with my main man Quentin Groves for DROY and go for a surprise homer pick and say Kevin Smith at OROY.. Detroit is gonna use a Zone Blocking scheme and he'll be splitting time with Tatum Bell.. He'll probably be the starter for us. With his good vision and strength, I think he'll put up some pretty good stats.

DEs usually don't make as big of an impact as rookies with a few exceptions (M.Anderson, K.Wimbley, S.Merriman) and WRs almost never make the Randy Moss rookie impact, so I think the safe thing is to go LB and RB. Darren McFadden in Oakland and Jerod Mayo in New England.

Call me a homer, but Lofton is going to have a very nice stat sheet this year. Should get 120 plus tackles at least, and a few interceptions or sacks as well. He definitely will have more tackles than any other rookie, I am pretty confident in that.

Offense: James Stewart - since he's apparently going to be ready for the start of training camp, i think he will establish himself as the workhorse runner, and personally he is my favorite RB in the draft. May not turn out to be the best one, but a personal favorite

Defense: Vernon Gholston - The league loves sacks. He will be rushing the QB pretty often and i think he will get his. I'm not buying the 'overrated' crap because where ever he was rated is irrelevant once he gets on the field and starts going after the QB. The man has talent.

Any ideas of your own?

I think that DROY will be Rivers or Lofton. It's always a stat-based award, and both those guys will grab tackles by the bucketload. Dorsey might be the most impactful DR, but he won't have the stats to win the award.

As to OROY, I think that McFadden is the most likely. He already has the buzz, he's running behind a decent run-blocking line, and the Raiders will be running it all day to protect Russell.

OROY - Kevin Smith has a real shot to make a difference in Detroit. I also like McFadden in Oakland but neither team really has an offensive line that I would trust. Oaklands is decent and they should run the ball a lot so I look for him to have a decent year. I think by week 4 or 5 he should get the bulk of the carries from Fargas though they will probably split to some extent throughout the year. Stew has a nice situation in Carolina especially in the redzone. I dont think any of the rookie wrs will have a role significant enough to warrant roty. Hardy could get some redzone targets. Same with Devin Thomas, Malcolm Kelly, and even Jerome Simpson in Cinci. Earl Bennet should get a decent amount of looks but no WR with Grossman/Orton as qb will ever put up the numbers for roty.

Ultimately, I'm gonna go with JStew.

DROY - Need a guy thats going to just put up big stats. Lots of tackles or lots of sacks. For sacks I like Gholston. For tackles I expect a lot from Rivers in Cinci. He should get the most playing time amoung rookie lbers. Someone in the mid rounds will surprise due to an injury ahead of him on the dc but thats too hard to predict. Long should get a solid 7-9 sacks in St. Louis as well.

My pick is gonna be Gholston purely off the fact that they will send him at the QB a lot until he learns the game more and can be relied on in coverage.

Defensive Rookie of the Year: Dan Connor LB Carolina Panthers- LB's always seem to have the edge when it comes to DROY. IMO it's between Connor, Rivers, and Lofton.

Offensive Rookie of the Year:Darren McFadden RB Oakland Raiders- Like LBs have the edge in DROY RBs seem to have the edge with OROY. I think Kevin Smith will have the best oppurtunity to get the most carries but I didn't go with him becuase he is in a divison with some good defenses that will hurt his numbers.

kiranadwaney
04-29-2008, 06:53 PM
DROY: Curtis Lofton (Atlanta Falcons) he will start straight away and will get 100+ tackles this year.

OROY: Kevin Smith (Detroit Lions) I think he will have evey opportunity to start this season and will go over 1000 yards.

Also LB's and RB's seem to generally win these awards because the transition from college to the NFL is a bit easier for them.

I'll be a homer and take the guy Mike Singletary called the best LB in this class to win DROY for a 2nd year in a row (Willis did it last year), Philip Wheeler.

For OROY, it has to be a RB, and it has to be someone who's going to see a lot of carries. That leaves Darren McFadden, Jonathan Stewart, Rashard Mendenhall, Matt Forte, and Kevin Smith as options. I'll go with Matt Forte in an upset.

DROTY - I could, and want to, go with Curtis Lofton; however, for the sake of diversity I will take Derrick Harvey. I like the fact that he has talent around him to draw attention away from him.

OROTY - I think Kevin Smith is in the best situation to get a large percentage of the touches in Detroit. I don't think much of his "competition," and I like the fact that Detroit added Gosder Cherilus to shore up the O-Line in front of him.

I am not doubting his talent at all, but I am am just wary of our DT situation. And plus, Keith Rivers is alot more talented and athletic and is on a weak defensive team so he should rack up the tackles.

OROY- McFadden's the obvious choice, but although I think he'll do well and show flashes of big things to come, I think Oakland's performance on the whole will drag down the votes for Run DMc. So I'm going with a sleeper choice-- Limas Sweed. Big Ben likes big receivers, and there's a path for Sweed to see significant play from the get go. Plenty of experience playing for one of the top college teams in the country should help alleviate the learning curve that usually keeps rookie WRs out of these discussions.

DROY- Ok, so I picked a less than obvious OROY candidate, which means I can pick the obvious player for DROY honors, right? Jerod Mayo on New England's defense is a perfect fit. New England will get plenty of exposure, because, no doubt, they'll be in the hunt for a championship all season yet again. So, with no reservations, I'll take the speedy, tough, physical new LB who should be able to go sideline to sideline for the Pats D.

Iamcanadian

OROY should be McFadden. He should have little problem putting up huge #'s running in Oakland's offense. They run the ball very well.
DROY hasd been won the last 2 years by LB's playing on bad teams where they got the opportunity to shine early. That makes Loften and Gholston the obvious selections to win the award. Take your pick.

Well... the point of the thread is to pick who we think is going to win the award, not to pick an obscure person and pat yourself on the back next year if you are somehow right.

I am sure everyone was board last year with everyone picking Patrick Willis and Adrian Peterson, but those people were right. Darren McFadden is an obvious choice. Guys like Curtis Loften and Jerod Mayo are obvious choices. Both play a position that has produced the DROY the last two years and walk into a really good situation where they should be able to play a huge number of snap.

Who cares if it is boring. If I am picking the players... I want to be right, not unique. If the two happen to work out together, great, if not, I'll take being boring...

Dam8610
05-02-2008, 10:30 AM

So there's no one beyond the first round that you think could possibly win the award? It's about being right, but there are good players past the first 40 or so picks.

What if my answer is no? What if I said that Darren McFadden is the most obvious choice for OROY and that is who I think is going to win it? That's my educated guess. Furthermore, let's look at recent history, the last 10 years:

1998 Charles Woodson Oakland Raiders Cornerback
1999 Jevon Kearse Tennessee Titans Defensive end
2000 Brian Urlacher Chicago Bears Linebacker
2001 Kendrell Bell Pittsburgh Steelers Linebacker
2002 Julius Peppers Carolina Panthers Defensive end
2003 Terrell Suggs Baltimore Ravens Linebacker
2004 Jonathan Vilma New York Jets Linebacker
2005 Shawne Merriman San Diego Chargers Linebacker
2006 DeMeco Ryans Houston Texans Linebacker
2007 Patrick Willis San Francisco 49ers Linebacker

8 firsts
2 seconds

1998 Randy Moss Minnesota Vikings Wide receiver
1999 Edgerrin James Indianapolis Colts Running back
2000 Mike Anderson Denver Broncos Running back
2001 Anthony Thomas Chicago Bears Running back
2002 Clinton Portis Denver Broncos Running back
2003 Anquan Boldin Arizona Cardinals Wide receiver
2004 Ben Roethlisberger Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterback
2005 Carnell "Cadillac" Williams Tampa Bay Buccaneers Running back
2006 Vince Young Tennessee Titans Quarterback
2007 Adrian Peterson Minnesota Vikings Running back

7 firsts
2 seconds
1 sixth

So yeah, there is exactly a 5% chance someone drafted outside of the first two rounds will win the award based on the last 10 years... so basically you're probably making a really bad guess if you take a guy outside of the first two rounds, because the one guy that won as a sixth round pick was a Denver Broncos RB that was simply a product of the system.

The odds are horrible.

And tons of people are picking Kevin Smith and he was a 3rd rounder...
