well like i said earlier, it happens by itself from time to time anyway, even if your not doing anything to directly cause it....

so it must serve some kind of necessary fuction

Yeah I crack my knuckles every now and then, but I'm pretty sure it is not related to arthritis. It can however weaken your grip.

answers the question pretty well i guess.

THE BOTTOM LINE Knuckle cracking will not cause arthritis, though it may lead to other problems.

the other problems being swelling and reduced grip

When you pop your knuckles you are actually stretching the connective tissue capsule that surrounds the joint which is filled with synovial fluid. Stretching causes the capsule to increase in volume. More volume means less pressure. Gas is less soluble because of the loss in pressure so it forms bubbles. When those bubbles pop it causes the noise.

The only damage it could cause is if you push to hard, which could harm you ligaments.

I do it. Not excessively though.

All the time. Sometimes I have to or that joint will lock up. That's probably not good.

I pop my hand knuckles occasionally.

Got a few habits with my feet. I get a lot of tension in them. I'm a walking cracker. Various parts of my body crack all the time. Many in my legs. My feet especially. When I was younger I had injuries. It's not good to break your right foot at 5 years old and severely sprain each ankle twice before the age of 14, also sprained/hyperextended my left knee when I was about 13 and I feel the difference between my two knees. My right leg is stronger, but less flexible. I think about it quite often, I always try to make my left leg take more of an exercise to make it stronger but it doesn't really work. I wish I would have rehabbed it way back then.

I think these are only part of why the cracking happens, but mostly in my feet.

Since then I've had very minor injuries.

my ankles crack alot, it makes it hard to sneak around the house late at night when the 'rents are asleep
even if I try, I can't crack my knuckles
my back cracks alot though, and it feels good when it does

I heard its not good because it makes your bones much weaker which isn't good for you when you get older.

I've heard that cracking your knuckles is the equivalent of dislocating your finger and relocating it. Not too sure about that though...

Yes. I'll deal with the possible consequences when they come.

Once I pop one finger I have to do the rest you can't just do one.

So true, which eventually results in me cracking everything on my body that I can. I crack my knuckles, wrists, elbows, shoulders (doesn't always work though), hips (also doesn't always work), back, neck, jaw, ankles and toes. I think I will look like a pile of jello by the time I'm in my 60s:), if I make it that far.

you know its not really cracking or poping your bones or joints. It just a gas that has built up in your joints and your are releasing it so it make a sound. Thats why its not bad for you.

I pop my fingers constantly. My neck all the time. I pop my back several times a day. And I pop as many bones in my feet that I can whenever I get into bed at night. Also do my wrist and my knees, my elbows and ankles, my shoulders, really anything with a joint. It all gets popped at one point during the day. It feels fantastic.
